Funny you should say that, I was gonna say Hetfield, but really hes the large majority of talent in that band so I decided Hammet goes into the pit (really should be Lars, but guitarist vs guitarist I guess).

In terms of songwriting, they've both written their fair share of incredible songs (and clunkers). In terms of playing, it's almost apples to oranges, as Hetfield has never attempted to be a solo shredder, but in terms of riffs, I think even JP would admit that Hetfield is *the* metal riff king, especially considering the clear influence he's had on JP's riff writing. And if we're counting vocals, Hetfield is a much stronger vocalist than JP.
Talent is not all about playing a billion notes per second. They both deserve their due respect.
