You know what else has become a cliché in Metal? ... Distorted guitars! Everyone uses them!  :rollin

saying orchestras have become cliche is like saying electric guitars have become cliche...

If you mean using an orchestra or electric guitar (or any other musical instrument or approach) for no reason other than filling up and beefing the sound, well that never became cliche, it's simply stupid and unoriginal every single time.

a PAGE AGO people!! damn I was proud when I wrote this because this is exactly my philosophy when it comes to this subject.. but whatever to my genius posts..  :\  :yeahright

MM will teach the orchestra how to do MATH orchestrations to go along with the new music!  :metal

Just the use of guitars in general is a bit too cliched.

If DT wants to be really bold they will record a stringless album.

Speaking of stringless,  I was thinking the other day that JP is rather non-adventurous when it comes to sounds and guitars. There's the fretless guitars out there,  the voice boxes etc.  JP strangely enough never experimented with those.

Everyone one of his solos is an adventure that takes a mortal being 65786x as long to complete, or is impossible for them to complete.

Sorry, I should have been more precise.  :lol

So, this tell us something: we have an orchestra on the album! I am happy, are you?  :D
It was on my wishlist, following The 2nd Law. I'm delighted!

Nightwish went downhill when they started to use a full orchestra.

But we'll see. Let's hope this won't be anything over-the-top.

Orchestral arrangements have become a cliché in metal, but I bet (or at least hope) DT will be able to use them effectively. Eren is really lucky! :)

Why have they become a cliche?
Because almost everyone uses them (orchestral arrangements are slowly breaking into extreme metal, even) but everyone seems to use them because they love orchestral music, and not because they actually have an idea how to use them in their music. At least that's my stance as a metalhead who dislikes 90% of how orchestras are used in metal :lol

Well said. A lot of lesser metal bands write a simple song and add orchestral instruments that just play the same simple chord progression, assuming that it will make their music sound grand and epic.

I want more bands to do what, for example, Haken did with the string quartet at the end of Visions :hefdaddy
Arguably 90% of metal bands don't know how to write metal that isn't cliched either. That's not a issue specific to the use of an orchestra, it's a general issue within the world of music and applies everywhere.

But the use of an actual orchestra isn't all that common, and is often done in an intelligent and interesting way (I like the Haken example, great choice!). And I trust DT to incorporate it nicely like they did on Octavarium.

Well, it's DT. I'm sure they're not going to use it just for the hell of using it, and they've already proven that they can incorporate great orchestra into their music, and again, it's freakin Dream Theater.  :hefdaddy

So.. so... does that mean they will be touring with an orchestra? You know, if theres a lot used (other than that I guess JR could play it live)

Kotowboy

^ Or they'll just backing track it like they have ben recently for backing vox etc.

Likely case here. Although I foresee one or a few special shows with the orchestra playing along with them ala Score.

The moment you know it's gonna be a great album.

What would Rush do? They just toured with an orchestra so it might be something DT would consider.

JP used a voice box for live version of LITS, it made the solo much more epic.

Good point.  Fretless would be awesome.  The Madmen & Sinners stuff James was on was freakin' badass and I believe that was all done with a fretless.  Fretless guitar is a tricky beast from what I hear.  Much more complicated than fretless bass.

I hope that the new album would have softer feeling.. Like Falling into Infinity!
