So I've seen the videos that that one guy did where he tracked down most of the samples and clips in various DT songs, amazing work.

What I'm wondering is the "Hold it now, wait-a-minute, c'mon Whewwwwwwwww" part. Is that a sample/clip from something or did they record that in the studio? If so, which of them did it?

Scorpion

I always thought it was MP - he's the one who did it live, at least.

Connoc

He certainly did do it live, but it doesn't sound anything like him on the studio album...

"Hold it now" is Chuck D, I don't know the rest, but MP said they are samples. He was into Rap at the time. It could all be Chuck D for all I know.

SeRoX

AFAIK, all sentences were said by different names.

The only sentence I know is "wait a minute". It's from Dancing Fool by Frank Zappa.

There is also the one Spanish (I think) part before the instrumental section. I have always wondered what it is, anybody knows?

That's a sample from the movie Cinema Paradiso.

The Lifting Shadows book says that the intro contains spoken sections from Frank Zappa, The Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy "to give the song an additional dimension".

Nope, it's an Italian film called Cinema Paradiso and it says: "adesso che ho perso la vista, ci vedo meglio e di piu" that means, "I can see much better now, I'mm blind..." but the exact meaning supposes to be: "I lost my sight, I can see much better now"

Connoc

Okay, so then our homework is to listen to the entire Public Enemy/Beastie Boy catalog to track down where the heck those other clips came from?

(I checked out Dancing Fool and you were absolutely right SeRoX!)

Why the "ENTIRE" catalog for both?? Surely Dream Theater could not have used a sample from a song AFTER 1992...

Yeah, he used it to get a sample from the future after travelling back in time to give it to a band who's member he would be in the future.

One should probably begin snooping around Pauls Boutique by Beastie Boys and Fear of a Black Planet by public enemy as both are listed among MPs favorite albums.

TheSoylentMan

I remember hearing that Beastie Boys song once and I recognized the sample. It was pretty exciting for DT dork like me (but not as cool as coming across the lyrics to LTL in Atlas Shrugged). That was about 15 years ago, so I have no idea which song it was in anymore.

That is my helpful contribution to this thread.

I've always thought that the "c'mon!" was Chuck D.

It's possible, considering that the Beastie Boys song contains "Hold It Now", so I think the above assumption:

...MIGHT be wrong...unless Chuck D. was sampled FOR the Beastie Boys song.

Yes, the "come on!" is Chuck D.  He says in the same way in a couple of songs, so I can't definitively say which one, but I think it is Bring Tha Noise.  For some reason, I'm having trouble finding the original Public Enemy version, but here's the PE and Anthrax version:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBA-xi8WuCU  Slightly different, but you get a good "come on!" at 1:13.

"Hold it now" is definitely Beastie Boys, as already posted:

It ain't just "possible" - I've listened to enough PE to know Chuck D's raps/voice. ;)

Yeah, but that's Flava Flav doing the "come on" and the sample on TTT is most definitely NOT Flav - it's definitely Chuck.

Listen carefully.  It's both of them at the same time.  But if memory serves, on the PE-only version, Chuck is up way louder in the mix.  Still, it could just as easily be from somewhere else.  As I mentioned, that isn't the only place in their music where they have that.  I'm just not recalling where else because it's been awhile (early '90s!) since I listened to them with any regularity.

There was never a "PE-only" version of Bring Tha Noize, even on Apocalypse '91 (which was where the combo was originally from, and rereleased on Attack of the Killer B's).  So, on THAT studio version I'm also not hearing Chuck - I'm only hearing Flav at the same timestamps.

It's entirely possible that the sample is from Fear of a Black Planet, as posted earlier in this here thread.

I think I found it, and I was wrong - it may not be Chuck D, the sample may be Flava Flav.

It's from "Fight The Power", around 3:04 of this video.

Edit:  It's also in about 5:03 of this video.

Edit 2:  It's not the same.  DAMMIT! ???

???  Wait, what?  No, it was originally a PE song long before the Anthrax/PE version came along.  It first appeared on the Less Than Zero soundtrack, and then later on It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which came out in 1988.  The Anthrax guys loved it and loved that PE gave them props, which is what prompted them to reach out to Chuck and ask if they could do a joint version of it, which is the one you are referring to.

So here's what we got so far:

Hold it now - Beastie Boys ("Hold It Now, Hit It")
Wait-a-minute - Frank Zappa ("Dancing Fool")
C'mon - Public Enemy ("Power To The People")
Whew - ???

I don't think the "whew!" is a sample.

I'm going to take the liberty to edit the thread title to call attention to it if MP happens to stop by.

EDIT:  Deb, the strange thing is, there doesn't seem to be an original version of it floating around in any of the usual easy-to-find spots on the Internet.  Weird.

DebraKadabra

Probably because the Anthrax collab version trumped it and is the more recognizable of the two?

Looks like our own BlobVanDam was involved on a similar topic at Jordan's forum back in 2007 and the "Come on!" was found to be from Public Enemy's "Power to the People", which I am now verifying.

Yes, I did my research on this once before!

"Hold it Now"
Beastie Boys -  Hold it Now, Hit it (0:00)

"Wait a Minute"
Frank Zappa - Dancin' Fool (3:25)

"Come On"
Public Enemy - Power to The People (0:05)

"Phew"
Couldn't track it down, although someone thought it might be from a Beatles song? I have no idea here. It's very non-descript.

"Ora che ho perso la vista ci vedo di più"
Cinema Paradiso (1:00:56) (I believe this timestamp is from the International cut, although the timestamp should be pretty close in the Director's Cut and original theatrical cut too)

I have all of the samples saved here too, and cut together just like the intro samples.
