Well, you taped my favourite live moment ever. I won't ever be thankful enough for that.  :)
Which one was that? The improv in the 9/5/04 Madison show?
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Well, we are completely on the same page, it seems ;)

I cried too many times to that improvisation. A miracle, a gem. Better than anything they have ever written since them, maybe with the sole exception of BAI.

It is by far my favorite improv as well. The band was really on for that one - it almost sounds like a song as opposed to just being improvised. I wish that they would have done more of those types of improvs on that tour (complete stand-alone improvs, as opposed to being attached to BTL or TLF, which automatically influenced where the band went with it).

To bring the thread close to being on topic, I don't believe there's any improvs on the upcoming LaLP, aside from JR's soloing before Surrounded or JP's soloing before TSCO, so I hope full-band improvs are something that they'll bring back on the next tour!

I hear you on both accounts! A DreamTheater-spot instead of the usual member-spots would save time and generate a net gain (IMO at least, a band jam, especially if consolidated performance after performance, is much more interesting than a single band member solo).

Where would I be able to hear this improv? I tried searching on youtube, but I came up empty.

wasteland

I'm sorry guys. The improv is part of a Grateful Dreams release, Stg. Portnoy's Progressive Hard Rock Band, that can't be shared electronically. So, this one bit of DT history won't ever appear on this board.

This one, though, is one of the circumstances where I really wish there could be made an exception to make the biggest share of the fans aware of that unique moment in DT history.

My apologies to the mods for my slip-up regarding the forum rules. :eek

Did the cartoon video with the 'Inception' theme during the intro make it to the finished product?

Over the Edge Productions: Yes, it did. But due to licensing, it had to be restored to a DT song. Though still pretty awesome.

Which song do you guys think they're referring to?
:corn

Restored to a DT song? What do they mean by that?

CodyWanKenobi

My vote is for Eve...

jk.

It's probably Hell's Kitchen.

They couldn't use the Dream is Collapsing theme they used to start all the shows on this tour on the DVD. So, the audio was edited out and an alternative track (i.e. a DT tune) was used instead.

This sounds very likely to me.

Possibly In the Name of God, but I don't think they'd do that for two consecutive concert DVDs.

It's a loop of the MM video when he was called to be the new DT drummer.

THIS IS AWFUL AWFUL AW-FUL

TL

Not a big deal, but still a bit of a bummer.
It's completely understandable, but Dream Is Collapsing was such an epic intro.

chrisbDTM

trying to get a license for a Hans Zimmer song for a concert DVD would be a headache for the band

wasteland

I wasn't expecting this at all It's clear that I don't know anything about licences. Too bad. Now, let the bets start again!

I'm going to say the ending of TCOT. We did express a lot our feelings on whether it should be on the DVD or not. xD

wasteland

The video is some 3:30 minutes long, they can't just paste the whole last verse section of TCOT there, it would't make much...

Yeah, agreed.
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

At least it's still there on every bootleg... It can't be removed from there...  :yeahright

That is true. The DT songs closest to that length off the top of my head are Cover my Eyes of Overture 1928. The latter MIGHT make sense.

Meatrose

That's a shame really. Don't get me wrong, I really didn't expect Dream Is Collapsing to be there for the finished product due to how a lot of license holders behave in general but it would have been awesome since it was such a perfect match.

Maybe the last bit of The Dance of Eternity, or another instrumental.

That still won't excuse them for not playing it in a decade or so.

wasteland

What if the DVD starts from the Intro of BITS and the cartoon is saved as a bonus content with something like the instrumental part of Outcry playing in the background?
