I think its a great song! Unfortunately, these polls are always invalid as they never really give accurate percentages since the active board members here represent like 0.05% of the DT fan population.

manticore999

I wouldn't say it's their best, but it's better than any song on SC, BCSL and TOT (3 albums so bad I can't listen to them), so I voted 'yes'!

champbassist

Poor by DT standards, but easily better than at least 80% of the songs I've heard.

? While those that post are more outspoken to respond, I think the numbers are rather surprising considering the posts. I believe the results would be quite indicitive of the general DT concert public, with it not being that far off. I honestly do not think if I did a survey in line at the next show I see, it would come out much differently.

I also think those that vote on polls are more lurkers than posters, and therefore may be a bit more of a casual fan based.

A fair share of statistics from research are lucky to have .05% of any population studied! Or at least anything is in my field, and those results are not invalid.

Orbert

Yeah, as long as the sample can be considered representative of the general population, there's no reason to think that the results aren't indicative of overall opinions.  Things like Nielson ratings are based on a tiny percentage of homes, but those numbers are very highly regarded and a lot of huge business decisions are made based on what they represent.

Now, if you went to a metal board and asked whether people preferred the metal side of DT more than the prog side, or went to a prog board and asked the same question, you'd get different results and neither would be indicative of the "average" DT fan.  But on a DT board, that's about as balanced as we're gonna get.

BURNING MY (Burning my soul) SOUL  :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal .

I friggin' love it.

The greatness is in that fact, that DT can make songs that are in different genres and still sound like DT and be great. BMS is fucking simple song for guitar and bass. The simplicity is one reason why I love it. When they have very complicated stuff like Octavarium, it's awesome that they have one heavy song without any wanking. This is the most badass DT song ever.

And the keyboard solo is my favourite DT keyboard solo ever.

It's on the edge to get to my top 30, but it isn't good enough.

Lowdz

It might have been a decent song for someone else, but not a good DT song. I usually skip it and JLMB. Infinitely better than CM and TDEN though

mocool13

I like it. it's a simple song, different, catchy, and has attitude. With that said, I still prefer many of their songs over this one; it's  not as bad as people make it out to be.

Dublagent66

I voted yes because there are parts of it I do like.  It's not that great but not terrible either.  I've grown to appreciate it for some of the moments it does have.

If it wasn't for "Burning My Soul", probably wouldn't have become a fan (or at least, not as soon as I did). I don't like the original version, though.

YtseJam

I think James ruined the tune seriously. pesser keeps on wabourneen wa soe lol

Actually this version is pretty cool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF9bK_5zMxc&feature=related

I think the moral of the story is that Dream Theater could fart into a mic and put that on the next album and some people would go "WOW man! I was with them ALL THE WAY on that! It just blew me away! Terrific song!"

theseoafs

Some of us think Burning My Soul is bad, sure, but I don't think anyone could rightfully compare it to a fart.

Exactly my point!  SC, BCSL and TOT sounded like farts and fanboys act like those were actually good!

I like it because the lyrics fit the music and that to me is one consideration when I rate songs. The one thing I wished they kept would be the intro to the original arrangement.

Burning My Soul is the 2nd worst thing to ever happen to DT. (The worst thing to ever happen to DT is the worst track on this album. You know the one.)

On the flipside, Hell's Kitchen being lifted out of Burning My Soul is probably the single best thing to ever happen to DT.

Pretty close to how I feel.

Hmmm... Burning My Soul = BMS = Bowel Movement Syndrome... coincidence?  I think not.

theseoafs

Probably is a coincidence, given that there's no such thing as "bowel movement syndrome".

Maybe there is, but it simply hasn't been given an "official" name yet.

I've liked this song ever since I first heard it back in 97.  Is it the best thing on the album?  No.  But it's a good, heavy song.

Yeah because ToT, SC, and BCSL have no redeeming qualities to them at all. ::)
