I think the moral of the story is that Dream Theater could fart into a mic and put that on the next album and some people would go "WOW man! I was with them ALL THE WAY on that! It just blew me away! Terrific song!"

Exactly my point!  SC, BCSL and TOT sounded like farts and fanboys act like those were actually good!

The fuck is this??  :rollin

Zydar

Well If my farts sounded like In The Name Of God, I would be OK with that.

BlobVanDam

If my farts lasted over 14 minutes, I'd be seeing a doctor immediately, but hey that's just me...........

Six Minutes of Inner Flatulence?

?

I like BMS - the lyrics are whiny at times and the robotic vocals aren't great but I'd take it over You Not Me, Never Enough and Prophets of War any day.

Errrr.... attempting to get this back on topic, I wouldn't put the CD in just to listen to Burning My Soul, but I don't skip it when it comes around.  It's just kind of 'there' for me, much like 2 or 3 of the other songs on FII.  But those weaker ones are offset by some absolutely fantastic songs so it's a strong album overall IMO.

Mike Portnoy is a whiny dude.

Six Minutes of Inner Flatulence?

This is what happens during the last few minutes of class when you really need to take a shit.

SystematicThought

I just really like the aggressive drumming on the track. It's a real stand-out for me.

It's not a horrible song, just not one of their best

Ryzee

I like this song.  It's nothing amazing but it's a rocking tune and has two highlights:

1. The groove under the first verse ("Thorn in my side, chip on my shoulder...).

2. The keyboard solo.  It. Kicks. Fucking. Ass.   Derek is awesome.

One of my least favorite DT songs, only better than a handful of songs (just let me breath, honor thy father, etc.)

First of all, I lent my Falling into Infinity to one of my dad's friends, and I don't feel like Googling it, so what in the world are the lyrics to the chorus? "LIVING AND LEARNING, THE PRESSURE PIZZA BERRRRNIN MAH SOUL." I mean, I guess it could be "the pressure keeps it burning my soul," but I'm not sure I understand the point of the song, then. At least, not at the moment. At the moment, it just sounds like "the pressure pizza."

Second, I like this song. The opening riff is pretty fun to headbang to. I'd say this song's just a song to put on the background, much like a good number of songs that Dream Theater has made. It's not meant to win over anyone's intellectual side. It's probably meant to make people dance.

Burning My Soul is awful and has no redeeming qualities.

This cubed

I voted neutral, though it probably leans more towards a yes. I don't think the song is cringe-worthy as some make it out to be.

But, I will say that I'd prefer Honor Thy Father before Burning My Soul. I'll take crossing the crooked step over my soul burning any day of the week    ;)

kevinpwrs

Just heard it on Sirius for the first time. The Boneyard channel played it.

Tis BOOLsheet

I too would take Honor Thy Father way before BMS.

At least Honor Thy Father has some redeeming qualities to it.  I love how they use the samples in it (not the best part of the song, but still dig it).

Honor Thy Father is a fine song. Burning My Soul is not.

That makes the song for me.

Bolsters

It took me a while to warm up to it, but I quite like the song now. That was my initial reaction to almost the entire album as a whole though, disliking but eventually coming to hold it in high regard. I think the only song I had a favorable opinion of at first was Hell's Kitchen.

Those samples actually ruin the song for me. I edited it to cut that portion of the song out seamlessly and that's the version I listen to. Same with Space-Dye Vest.

But I'll take Burning My Soul over Honor Thy Father either way.

I definitely prefer that version, although I listen to the live version from the Hollow Years single.

It sounds completely disjointed.  The parts that eventually became a part of Hell's Kitchen sound completely out of place in that demo version of Burning My Soul.

YtseJam

I like it better...

I don't know if I've ever heard the hollow years version. Do you have a link to it?
