No Surprises Really. Adrenaline Mob make the list.

* Apologies if this belongs in GD instead...

BlobVanDam

This should be in GMD. What does this have to do with DT at all?

Kotowboy

Nothing.  ;D  I just posted it here without really thinking..

However _ I thought it was unsurprising he chose an EP by Portnoy as one of his albums of the year. It's not even an album is it ?

BlobVanDam

He also chose a live album and a collaboration that only gave two songs. Even the recent RR list of top albums included EPs.

Blackfield

DT would've been on that list if MP still was in the band. He's such a kiss ass.

And what's to say that the only reason DT would have been on the list is no different to the reason that AM is on the list? Perhaps Trunk is not omitting DT for MP's sake so much as just not having MP as a reason to include them, if that makes sense. Or maybe he just didn't like the DT album. Check out people's best of 2011 lists in GMD, and many people here didn't even include it. It's not that far fetched. I've always taken Trunk as an MP fan more than a DT fan, unlike pretty much everyone here.
It's pretty definite the inclusion of AM is only because of MP, but it is possible that DT's exclusion was honest and not completely motivated by MP.

Cyclopssss

I just don't see, as a progressive rock/metal fan, how you can ommit ADTOA by DT in a yearlist, or Steven Wilson's for that matter.

AngelBack

When Trunk grows up he should consider a career in politics.

Looking at the rest of the list, what makes you think he's a fan of any progressive music at all? Looks like a more straight up rock/metal fan to me. And as a similar rock/metal fan myself, I don't rank Steven Wilson either. And similarly, even ignoring the MP factor, it's no surprise that DT isn't in there.

I wonder why this thread hasn't been moved yet.

manticore999

Hard to believe AM made that list.  A truly awful bunch of songs.  Horrible vocals from someone who can actually sing when he wants too.  Just acwaste of talent.

utopiarun

Not surprising, he is a metal fan, I don't hear any progressive music on his show.

AtmosphericV

This just shows that this Eddie Trunk is a complete kiss ass with little integrity. I get a bad taste in my mouth. All the years he has been including DT and now all of a sudden DT is just gone from the list and ADRENALINE MOB gets a spot. What a loser.

Yes he could have done well in politics but never to the top, simply because he's too much of a kiss ass. He'd probably be someones secretary.

ZKX-2099

That guitar tone...

It's the guitar equivalent of the drum sound in St. Anger.

rumborak

While I don't necessarily conclude anything from DT's absence in that list, AM's inclusion is definitely somewhat eyebrow-raising, especially when considering that MP and ET (hehe, ET) are buddies going to shows together.
But who knows, maybe he really did like it.

You want ass kissing, I see both of the new mods at his forum have since said in the official DT thread over there that neither likes A Dramatic Turn of Events very much.  And one of them even, in the same post, referred to Adrenaline Mob as one of his favorite bands. :lol

Then again, that was probably part of the questionnaire Portnoy prepared that they had to answer before being accepted as a new mod:

Do you love Adrenaline Mob?
Are you prepared to not love anything and everything Dream Theater does without me?
Are you prepare to delete any post you see that doesn't reflect overly positively on me?
Are you okay with me spilling blood on your brand new floor?

If your answer to any of those questions was "no," you were disqualified from consideration.

hahah, really it's all so funny. It's such a big joke! I feel bad for those kiss-arses, they really need to get a life.

And Weymolith is the worst of them all in my opinion.

That list makes me wonder if Trunk ever really liked Dream Theater at all.

As I said, I think Trunk is more of an MP fan than a DT fan. Nothing on that list says to me that he's a prog rock/metal fan, so I don't think he excluded DT at all. He just no longer had his one reason for including them in the first place, which was MP.

antigoon

Judging by the rest of the albums in that list it's not completely surprising that he would enjoy something as bland as Adrenaline Mob, MP or no MP.

And, of course, I say this without having heard any of it :P

02T

Trunk has been on the record as not particularly liking prog.  He's never been a fan of MP's Transatlantic stuff.  AM is much more his taste, from what I've seen and heard.

His complete inability to answer a couple of simple DT trivia questions on That Metal Show, suggests to me that he has, at best, only a passing familiarity with DT's music.

Eddie mentioned recently in a tweet that "As I am" is his favorite DT song.

rumborak

Given that As I Am was a single release, it could well be that those are essentially the only ones he really knows.

What annoys me more than any of this is that they call it "That Metal Show" instead of more accurately/honestly calling it "That HEAVY Metal/Cock Rock Show." A decent chunk of what gets exposure on there was never even remotely considered metal/heavy metal in its own time. It's like they were too pussy to potentially scare off viewers by openly admitting they had a show primarily about 70s/80s hard rock and also wanted to try to see how many fans of metal (i.e. thrash and later styles that were never fully under the "heavy" metal umbrella) they could deceive into giving the show a chance whom otherwise would've never watched it. Beyond that, his cohosts are mouth breathers without any original thoughts of their own and have absolutely no taste whatsoever.

KevShmev

Serious question: given everything that has transpired, does anyone still think that Trunk's source when he revealed that Mangini was gonna be DT's new drummer, weeks before DT announced it, wasn't Mike Portnoy?  Of course, we will never know, but I think it is fairly obvious, and I wouldn't be surprised if Portnoy did it, knowing Trunk would spill the beans early, just to be vindictive.  Given his other behavior of the past year plus, I think it is obvious. /speculation, not fact :P

They say at the top of the show, "That Metal Show.  Your place for all things Hard Rock and Heavy Metal."  And I have to say, I've been a fan of heavy music since 1984, and I've never before seen anyone make a distinction between "metal" and "heavy metal".

It's one of my favourite Dream Theater songs, I might often put it in my top 10.

chrisbDTM

i can totally see Mangini emailing Portnoy to tell him that he was gonna take the job and that he meant no hard feelings about it, just like in the documentary "he's a good friend of mine" and then portnoy telling Trunk as a "source". obviously i have nothing to go off, but it is certainly not impossible

How would MP even know?

I suspect he still has enough business dealings with the band (working out royalties, etc., stuff like that) to where he would have to be made aware of any new members (and Mangini would have been a member for close to six months by the time the reveal actually happened) and whatnot.

Plus, like chrisbDTM said, Mangini strikes me as a very classy guy who totally would have emailed/texted/contacted Portnoy in some fashion to let him know so there would be no hard feelings.
