^Seconded, but I hope the guy's okay.
He is.

I just went back through his posts a bit - see if I could find any links to an online profile or anything like that, just to be sure he was alright. Bingo. He added something to his Soundcloud yesterday.

I agree. Skip to the next guy.

Ah ok.  I've been away for a while so I'm a behind but I'll get too it! My first 5.  I'll keep them short.

50. Repentance

One of two songs off Systematic Chaos to make my list, love the intro.  The solo is amazing, JP did ace. The reason it's low is that it drags for ages after the solo, all the spoken word sections and the Ahhhs (as lovely as they are).  I think it just goes on too long.

49. The Killing Hand

Another great song.  Absolutely love the marquee version but the original doesn't do much for me, mainly due to the production and Charlie.  It would be a lot higher if not for that.

48. These Walls

My god, this song live was amazing.  James getting 30,000 fist pumping to the riff at the end was awesome.  I do think it's a great song, the bass sounds great being picked for a change. I love the pre-chorus (watch me), it really builds well into the chorus.

47. Wither

What a lovely little tune, I love James' voice on this.  I think the keys really shine as well with Jordan's gorgeous orchestral patches.  Listening to them on their own from the stems really made me appreciate this song more.

46. Overture 1928

My first proper introduction into Dream Theater after Regression, it really showed me what they were capable of. I'd never heard anything like this before and I was instantly hooked.  The keys solo about 3 minutes in is one of my favourite JR moments.

Nekov

Overture is fantastic. The other 4 wouldn't make my top 50. Good start

BlobVanDam

Nice batch to start with. I'd place These Walls much higher, and it's nice to see Overture 1928 listed properly as in individual song.

Scorpion

All good songs, though half would be higher and the other not on my list at all.

Also, nice to see some action return to this thread. Please, however, don't pull a cup, okay? :)

Have never really understood the love for The Killing Hand, but I enjoy the other 4 tunes.

Gotcha  ;)

Another update just to keep things moving a bit!

45. The Root of all Evil

What a fekin' riff, love it. The 'I am Ready' sections are amazing, there's some great soloing from the guys and what an opener for a show! Probably my favourite lyrics from any one of 12 step songs with Repentance in a close second.

44. Blind Faith

Blind Faith is one of those happy DT songs to my ears. It makes me smile.  The lyrics aren't that happy but still they are still good.  I love the instrumental sections, Jordan's piano break is godly.  The chorus is pretty cool too. The CIM version is dreadful, they need to put this out on another DVD/CD again.

43. Raise the Knife

I forgot how much I liked this song until I came to do this top 50.  One of the cooler tunes written for FII but never made it unfortunately.  I love the keys on this song. The chorus is brilliant, especially the end chorus.  The instrumental part/solo is excellent, a good solid bass and drum groove with some brilliant playing from JP.

42. Stream of Consciousness

One of the less crazy instrumentals, which is why I like it.  The cool overdriven bass riff is excellent and the Vacant themes are brill. Jordan uses some great sounds which really brings out the song for me.  The section from about 8:30 is very cool too.

41. Pull Me Under

Ah...the hit! It's a great tune, there's some wonderfully written riffs and I love James' voice.  They did a mighty fine job, the chorus is up there as one of their best and the riff under the 'Watch the sparrow falling' section is amazing.  All in all, a good rock tune.

BlobVanDam

Aside from RTK, I love them all. I'd definitely place BF a lot higher (top 20 at least), not sure where the others would ultimately fall on my list though.

Scorpion

Good songs, though I wouldn't rate RTK quite that high.

And Blind Faith is faaaaaaaaaaaaar too low.

Rattlehead

Good choices, The Root of All Evil is one of the few excellent songs on an otherwise weak album from DT (in my opinion of course  :hat). All of those songs would definitely be in my top 50 aside from RTK.  :metal

This and the same for PMU.

Raise the knife is such a great song. I wish there was a version that sounded better than the B-side

Was just about to.

Great updates so far. I would definitely place The Killing Hand, These Walls, Blind Faith and The Root of All Evil higher. I like Pull me Under, but it wouldn't make my top 50.

Nekov

Let me correct myself, a studio version that sounds better than the B-side. I'm really not a fan of live songs although there are some exceptions.

Fix'd for me.

And 45-41 is cool too, though I'd place some songs higher.

A little update.

40. New Millennium

I actually really like this song.  The chapman stick sounds beautiful, I wish JM would use it more.  I also thought Derek did a great job on this; he uses some great sounds. From the bass and drum breakdown back into the chorus is one of my favourite instrumental sections from the guys.

39. On the Backs of Angels

The intro is awesome, the riffs are awesome, the chorus is awesome and Mike Mangini is awesome.  I remember waiting eagerly for this song, refreshing Roadrunner's youtube account constantly...then it appeared.  Listening to this song for the first time I was stunned at how good it was and I knew that they had entered another era which will be just as good, if not better as the last.  A great Dream Theater tune.

38. Trial of Tears

John Myung is a god, his bass playing is something else on this.  The man! His lyrics are also brilliant.  The chorus is wonderful, the solos' are good, drags just a little bit for my liking but I still enjoy it.  My favourite part is easily "The Wasteland".  From the beautiful acoustic guitar, ace sound effects, James singing his lungs out and JM's bass, it's just amazing.

BlobVanDam

:tup for New Millennium and Trial of Tears. The Budokan versions of both are also really good, and helped get me into FII.
I'd place ToT much higher though. :)

Scorpion

New Millenium is too high, OTBOA is pretty much where I would I rate it and TOT is far to too low, so I guess that it's a good update, on average. :lol

I'll pistol whip him if he even considers it.

Jon, I hope you have some ridiculously controversial choices coming up.

Am I the only one to find SoC repetitive?

Totally.

And what's bad with repetitiviness? For example Ministry's So What has two riffs and the song is 8 minutes long, but I don't have a single bored moment when listening to it.

Nekov

ToT and New Millenium are great songs. ToT should be higher in the list  :)
