Obviously, if you don't want to know what they are playing on this leg, you have no business even clicking on this thread, so no complaining.

Set list last night:

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Endless Sacrifice
5. Drum Solo
6. Ytse Jam
7. The Silent Man (Acoustic - JLB, JP and JR)
8. Beneath the Surface (Acoustic with everyone except JM)
9. The Great Debate
10. On the Backs of Angels
11. Forsaken
12. Through My Words
13. Fatal Tragedy
14. Outcry
Encore
15. Under a Glass Moon

I'll give it a B.  The two acoustic numbers back to back was a brilliant idea, and opening with Bridges in the Sky is awesome.  I can't give a set list with Forsaken and These Walls in it an A, however.

I suspect many are disappointed that Breaking All Illusions wasn't played, but you gotta figure that they will be touring almost non-stop for the next year, so it will find its way in there eventually.

I was really hoping they would do BAI. Thats the one song I really want to hear live.

njdtfan

I think BAI would be a better set closer than Outrcry. But still have to say the setlist from this show is pretty solid. Get Forsaken out and add Peruvian Skies.

Cranky

I am going to see them on tuesday, so I wont vote until after I see them. I would give it a C+/ B- from just looking at the set list, but I also can't tell how all of the songs will sound together live, and I usually, I end up enjoying songs that I don't like off of the albums better when they are played live, so we will see.

Wait....

No Lost Not Forgotten or Breaking All Illusions?

Under a Glass Moon as the encore?

Ummmm......
This.... THIS! Sigh.

skydivingninja

Despite the MASSIVE blunder that is Endless Sack of Rice, the rest of the setlist is killer.  A.

OMG, UAGM is perfect as a closer! I love that song so much.

Amazing to see Endless Sacrifice. Solid choices from the new album. I quite like Forsaken and Fatal Tragedy, but better songs could have been used. I wish they didn't play BMU,BMD either.

Millais

I voted B, although based on what they played at SF and last night here's what would be my A/A* grade:

1. Bridges In The Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Endless Sacrifice
5. Mike Mangini Drum Solo 6. Ytse Jam 5. Lost Not Forgotten
7. Far From Heaven
8. Beneath The Surface
9. The Great Debate
10. On The Backs Of Angels
11. Caught In A Web
12. Fatal Tragedy
13. Outcry / Breaking All Illusions (Either would be awesome!)
Encore: 14. Under A Glass Moon

if they play that @ Wembley in February I'd be so happy!

anyway, seeing DT live is just such an experience I'd be pretty happy with whatever they played

As someone who was there, I would consider it an A set list, hands down.  Even songs that I am not as crazy about were carried off so well that they added something positive.  For example, Endless Sacrifice is my least favorite song on TOT.  And yet, it was one of the standout performances of the night.

If I had seen the set list before the show, I subjectively would probably think, "good set list, but if it were totally up to me, I would swap out The Silent Man and Through My Words."  But they both completely worked in the context of the set.  TMW is a great transition into Fatal Tragedy, and you can just feel the anticipation build as you get to the transition between songs, so it makes complete sense to play it if Fatal Tragedy is in the set.  And The Silent Man, while being one of my least favorites on Awake, was just great.  It was very cool that they brought back a completely acoustic format for that song, and it really highlighted JP's backup vocals (which were outstanding).  From this fan's perspective, if my three last favorite songs in the set worked that well, there is nothing remotely worth complaining about.

And on another note, I seriously don't get the dislike for Forsaken on this forum.  I'm glad it is the minority opinion as far as the larger fan base is considered, because it's a terrific song and went over incredibly well live.

I agree with this.  I've liked "Forsaken" since the very first time I heard SC.

Mladen

It's a really good song, it's just that most of us have like 50 songs that we would enjoy more. For example, Caught in a web instead of Forsaken is terrific.    :metal

to be honest, I think the people who have commented on the setlist on this forum, and others, AND including me really don't have a clue what they're talking about until they experience it live...

Endless Sacrifice was one of my most disliked DT songs up until last month where I saw a live video of it in Porto (i think?) and the energy the band were putting it just resulted in the crowd loving every second and it has gone a long way into some of my favourite DT songs.

Yeah, I would take CIAW over a LOT of their other songs.

Ben_Jamin

I don't mind Forsaken. I would've been happy with that setlist just for Beneath The Surface alone, if I had read the SF setlist then went to the LA show, I would've been disappointed that they didn't play BTS.

Also, what happened here when the setlist was posted is one reason why looking at the setlist beforehand is not a good idea if you want to enjoy the show.  It makes the show more amazing not knowing what's gonna be played, and makes you appreciate the band. Plus they can play whatever they want and I'll be happy, just glad they're playing in my town. Which might be a reason why South America rocks so hard.

I'm in the same camp with those who think the set list could be better.  The lack of Breaking All Illusions is disappointing and there are a few tracks on there that I'm not exactly crazy about, but still they're playing quite a bit of material from the new album, so I guess it's a "B"

I also have to add that the vibe at this show was so incredible that that takes the set up another notch just by itself.  Full review of the show here:  https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=28273.0

C:

BAI has to be in the setlist! Forsaken needs to be laid to rest, and I reckon 1 or 2 more of the "classics" is required to create a balanced setlist.. plus they need to play for longer  ;D

I say this last night, and I will say it again: I like the set list, but the absence of any major heavy hitters is glaring.  I've always said that of stuff like Pull Me Under, Metropolis, Learning to Live, The Spirit Carries On, etc., one of those should always be played.  Those are crowd favorites that even the most casual fans are gonna know and go crazy over.  Gotta give the fans at least one of those, I say.

Agreed.

Also, while I can see why they'd want to do a drum solo, drum solos are also boring as hell. And Endless Sacrifice? No thanks.

Beyond that it's a pretty good set though.

As it stands it's a C for me, looks quite disappointing actually...

Maybe if the setlist was more like this:

1. On The Backs Of Angels
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
3. Endless Sacrifice
4. Take The Time
5. Drum solo
6. Ytse Jam
7. The Silent Man (Acoustic)
8. Bridges In The Sky
9. The Great Debate
10. Outcry
11. Beneath The Surface
~Encore~
12. Breaking All Illusions
13. Octavarium

^I'd like that! :D

I gave it an A. My first DT show and anything they played for me would have made it that way. Have to agree with bosk that the crowd and vibe were amazing. Can't get any better than the first show to start off the tour.

I do admit I was expecting LTL/Metropolis/TCOT and BAI for the encore but no way I am disappointed in getting UAGM. That solo is amazing.

Hearing Outcry live the song finally clicked for me. Build Me Up, Break Me Down will still be on the low within the new album but both have moved up individually and now makes ADTOE that much better.

I'm a little confused that there were no FII tunes, given that some of them have gotten short shrift in the past. I figured MP was the main ctiric of FII and we might see YNM, NM, LitS, Anna Lee, etc.

Well, it seems pretty obvious to me that they are basically bringing along the same songs they had for the summer shows + the new album's stuff, presumably to make things easier for MM...in fact the only "new" tunes are acoustic stuff: "Wait for sleep", "The silent man"...I'm not checking the tour dates for any long break where they might rehearse some "new" stuff to mix the setlist a bit but I'd definately love they would get rid of "These walls" and "FOrsaken" and put something better in it, like "Home" or some FII stuff like "You or me" or else...still wondering anyway if the "orginal FII material" was just a MP's obsession or if the guys actually care to play live the "real, raw & uncut" version of those songs rather than the album version...dunno...

Also....could you imagine a DT concert ending with -last encore- one guitar,a  keyboard, a singer's stool..."Beneath the surface"!!!!!!!!!! :omg:

think I'd die as the first chord is struck. Would be sooooooo damn awesome!!!!!! :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Without LTL, Metropolis, PMU or ACOS (not expecting that one), the encore has much to be desired. However, the videos of the show are amazing. Just goes to show that a setlist doesn't mean much until it is heard.

Dr. DTVT

Damnit I can view the grades without voting.  I want to see the grades and not the playlist.  Can someone PM me the grades?  First person to do so reply in the thread so I don't get multiple PM's.  I'm not coming back in this thread because I DON'T WANT TO SEE THE SETLIST.

You might be in the wrong thread :p

coffees for closers

I would change 5 out of the 14/15 (depends who's counting) songs so I gave it a C. I am not a big fan of BMUBMD, These Walls, Endless Sac, Forsaken, and Through My Word is too short to count as its own song.

Cool Chris

On paper, I'd give it a B-. After seeing it live, B, maybe B+.

TW and TGD are at the bottom of their respective albums for me, but seeing them live was better than on disc for me. A little surprised at those choices.

The ADToE songs were excellent, I was hoping for LNF, but that's a downfall of having an album that has so many good songs.

Would have preferred CiaW over Forsaken. FT was glorious. I've seen ES 3 times now, and I still love it, and it always gets a good response. The lack of FII songs is always a good thing. UaGM isn't an 'epic' closer, but it is a damn good song, and I'm ready for a change from the PMU/Metropolis encores.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Tumdace

I'd really like to see Metropolis Pt 1, just because I really really want to hear that song live (or Learning to Live) considering its one of my favourite songs.
