This is way heavier than anything they've done. Love JR's Keyboard atmosphere, and JLB's vocals fit real well. This sounds to me the lead in to and the first verse.

Nic35

The more I listen to it, the more I hate JP's guitar tone.

abydos

Yeah I felt the same way too. DIdn't notice it in the single but in this teaser I really don't like his tone.

Ben_Jamin

It fits though, its a perfect tone for what it gives out so far.

Mhmmmm then I can't imagine what would you think about Mike Orlando's pig screaming tone hahaha :rollin

ACID_FOX

It's MILES better than the BC&SL tone.

Ben_Jamin

His tone now reminds me of his Raw Dog tone.

The tone from the clip is MUCH better than Raw Dog. I don't think the two can be compared!  :lol

BlobVanDam

Yeah, no comparison. Raw Dog had a really thin guitar tone with no lows or mids at all. This is much better.

Agreed, I love JP's guitar tone on every album, period.

Cable

I enjoyed it. The mix sounds better, and maybe it's wishful thinking, but I believe based on what has been released Myung's influence has made a step back in the right direction.

And Jordan's playing in this sample and OTBOA has been quite restrained. I really do think MP was exerting too much control, based on SC & BC&SL, and also the studio videos from BC&SL when JP was trying to say they do too much of the trade-off solos. I think he was not a fan of the more atmospheric playing, which was wonderful to here in this sample and in the beginning of OTBOA.

farsight

JR is doing the best so far, he clearly wasnt kidding when he said he took his time choosing his sounds, the synths so far in both OTBOA and BitS have been outstanding. JP's tone is his usual 7 string tone, pretty likeable verse riff(if they are verses), and I usually don't like the verse riffs in the heavier songs.

What's bothering me is JM is lost in the mix again, maybe it's just youtube again, but I can barely hear him. That and the artwork, so the clown looks like a leprechaun now? he is quite small in scale in comparison to the bird

Wow, these riffs sounded in the same vein of BC&SL -not good. I gotta admit, I was more excited when I heard the riffs from Forsaken in the trailer teaser back in 2007. This teaser sounds really... generic Dream Theater. I hope the rest of the song brings something... new?

Same here - my first impression of the song was, that it sounded like a mixture of Raw Dog, ITPOE and TMOLS instrumental section...

Ben_Jamin

Is he using Axe-Effects? Because that tone sounds real Djenty, in a way. Which is good.

JM is probably using a distortion pedal on the heavy parts.

Psy

I really dig the tone and the rhythm. Then again, I am quite a fan of AaL and Chimp Spanner so maybe that's why. :X

+1...this clip has me worried now.

Agreed, they put me in mind of the kind of variety he was offering during the Octavarium album. Kind of missed that during the 'SC/BCSL' period.

I like JP tooooone... am I the only one? :-[

I don't see why anyone's excitement for anything on the album should be based on a teaser in any meaningful way.  I remember hearing the snippets for The Dark Eternal Night and thinking it would be sweet.  And then I heard the song...

Nope! I also think it's awesome. So heavy, but still tight.

tgstk2

I like it however its still the same kind of  mesuggah kind of chopping riffs which they started to play from 6doit and on, its not like this couldnt be on that record or up. Riffage wise... Not that impressed

Why? It's a very short bit of a very long song in the middle of the album. Not the highlight of the entire entity.

So we're basically on the same page? The song has 10 more minutes to "excite" me again. In short, "from what I heard of BITS (GREATEST ACRONYM EVER!!1) is that it sounds generic, I hope the rest of the song is better."

Guitalguy

You can't know how the song's going to be just from half the first verse, but this sounds very good to me. The heavy riffing section is very cool imo, and the verse as well. The riffage is simple, and so is the vocal melody, but it still sounds cool. Hopefully the audio quality will be better on the album. (of course it will..)

I like the way Jordan helps set the atmosphere with all these sounds and effects. It's quite different than before, in a good way. Doesn't always follow the guitar melody, like he says in the interviews, that he wanted to make it more interesting.

I'm psyched for the album!

JediKnight1969

This album is a challenge: it's not going to be an automatic hit, but it's going to grow up inside us until become a masterpiece. I'm 100% sure

Groundhog

I really dig this teaser. Sure it doesn't bring anything new to the table, but everything just seems to be done better. It's like new DT combined with some of their classic elements. I don't know what's not to like in this clip? Keyboard's are great. They're adding more to the athmosphere rather than just noodling around or doubling the guitar. Definately some cool stuff from JR and JP and I love the drumming. James sounds great also.

IdoSC

Usually when JLB sings melodies like that, the melody he sings right after that is something freakin' high :lol I wonder if that's the case here too.

Does anyone think the thread title is a bit misleading.  No song was actually released.

The thread title says there was a "teaser" released. Teaser =/= song.

Wow, I must seriously have a case of dyslexia.

It's just a teaser. We don't even know what the chorus, and other primary parts of the song sound like that go with this part. Maybe this is just something that Roadrunner picked out and thought they should release, I bet the entire song will work a lot better for everyone in context. It sounds cool, but I can't judge it just by listening to this small section out of context. It's better than the "mash tons of sound clips together" teasers that are usually released though, like the ones for adrenaline mob.
