I really dig this teaser. Sure it doesn't bring anything new to the table, but everything just seems to be done better. It's like new DT combined with some of their classic elements. I don't know what's not to like in this clip? Keyboard's are great. They're adding more to the athmosphere rather than just noodling around or doubling the guitar. Definately some cool stuff from JR and JP and I love the drumming. James sounds great also.

Best comment I've seen on Facebook for the teaser:

QuoteSure sounds like DT but the lyrics (Loch Ness??) are bad. Portnoy wasn't just the drummer he was the poet and it shows.

:rollin

"Blackness awakens".... not Loch Ness awakens.

The teaser is stuck in my head now. :o I really like the riffs now.

It stucks very slowly in my head, I'm not so well satisfied like after OTBOA, I wait for whole song to have some comments, but I think now, that this could be very weird DT album... which not means bad ;)

I think the key word here is "teaser." The entire passage felt like it was building to something big, adding layer upon layer, and then --

-- full stop.

We haven't heard anything substantial at all, but it's by design, I think. So far, we've just heard some really heavy riffing, some keys layered on top of it, and eventually a vocal line - none of which are blowing anyone out of the water, but all three of which have been very well directed. A song with that passage in isn't a bad thing. A song with that passage as a highlight very possibly would be, but I don't think we're looking at that.

Does anyone else think that the riffs are just missing something?  On paper, they should be really chunky...almost Mirror-like.  Is it the fact that the drums aren't really syncopated with it?  I just am not moved at all by the instrumental section of the teaser.

DoctorAction

Great. Everything sounds great to me. But it's not heavy to me. Sure, it's that kind of riff and arrangement, but it sounds relaxed, proggy and, most importantly, not trying hard to be extreme modern metal. Thank god.  :tup

Edit: And James delivery is fantastic. Hooray!

For me, this teaser is better than The Mirror.

Too short to tell but I like it so far...
Keyboard sound, atmosphere, along with the rhythm section and vocals are all good.
I hope that this short thing is going to build up in to a very strong progressive piece of music, with great melodies, and I expecting the same for "Lost not forgotten", "Outcry" and especially for "Breaking all Illusions".

SnakeEyes

Much more open, less compressed sound than the past few albums.  The guitar tone is really crunchy, yet open at the same time.  Love it.

I never really liked the older Dream Theater stuff as much as the newer stuff (not to say I don't like it, it's still great music) since the first album I heard was Systematic Chaos.

I thought it was Loch Ness aswell, lol. Well after SC they could write anything.

DarkLord_Lalinc

Yeah, I can already see Petrucci explaining the lyrics.

Well...this song is actually about a monster (laughs inside). An evil monster who rises from an ancient lake and haunts a town. (keeps laughing inside)

Well I kinda like it but I see why some doesn't and some of the most weird moments even I can't look past.

Call me old fashioned, but its probably just missing the other 10 or so minutes of the finished song, in order to make any reasonable opinion on it at all..

The more I listen to the teaser, the more I think the album will be better and better!

The Silent Cody

I've seen it, very nice, I think it appears one hour after the teaser :P

Raoul Sanchez

One thing I really like about this sample is the drumming. It's mixed quite low compared to what we've had in the best few releases, and it's not as flashy as we're used to from Dream Theater, but some of those fills are tasty as hell.

Overall I like it. It's not amazing by itself, but it has some solid riffs and the vocals sound pretty interesting by itself. Sound wise I'd say it sounds like their more recent heavier stuff at first, but to me it sounds much more atmospheric, and the drumming makes it sound tighter.

italianoman

I dunno, I loved the snipped; thought it was just interesting enough to keep me eagerly awaiting the rest of the song. Like everyone else, JR's spacey synth is freaking cool too but (and I'm sure this is YouTube's fault) the rhythm guitar sounded muddy. JP always talks about how tight he likes the low-end of his tone so I'm sure it'll sound clean and rippin' in reality.

Harpejji

Is there also a link to the art of BITS?

jmbeat

After listening to OTBOA and BITS bit again for the millionth time, I really love the fact that they both Breathe. There is actually space to think while listening.  THe BITS snippet very much AWAKE sounding to me, that album BREATHES.

JPX

Imagine if they released something that sounded like the first 30 seconds of Paradigm Shift. Now that would be a teaser.

If anything like that is on the album, that song would jump to a 10/10 in my book, regardless of the quality of rest of the song.
