I don't know if this has been posted yet, but I couldn't find the topic.

I for one am surprised the Rolling Stone had published a topic like this, but im even more surprised that DT even made the list. No Porcupine Tree or Electric Light Orchestra, but Mars Volta and Tool made the list.

Mars Volta.

Prog.

heh.

Coulda been worse.  They could've picked Metallica.

Very nice that they actually gave credit to ELP.

Other than Dream Theater, Rush, and Tool I don't listen to any of those bands. I've obviously heard of most of them, but never gave them a try.

Perpetual Change

Yeah, the Mars Volta write-up is just so off it's hilarious  :lol As is the Tool one, really.

wammabe

They probably aren't able to mention a single prog band that is not in the list
Anyways, I actually like the list a bit, it surprised me.

Wow...those write-ups are really bad. :|
I agree, but the actual list was solid.

TheGreatPretender

DT should've been #1. But I guess they're too metal to be the best Prog Rock. Which makes them better in the long run. So...  :metal

KevShmev

Pretty good list, really.  They got the major ones from prog's "glory days" and they got the three most popular and mainstream prog bands of the last two decades.

And the readers got number 1 right. :coolio

TL

Wait...
Rolling Stone mentioned progressive music in a non-negative light, said somewhat positive things about DT and Rush, and ended up writing a half decent article overall...
I'm confused...

Jirpo

I would have been happier to see PT swap with Mars Volta.

Metabog

Great list, though I'd have replaced Mars Volta with something else (maybe Ayreon?), and I'd have swapped Rush with Pink Floyd, as I believe Pink Floyd is the epitome of classic rock, not just prog. But you'd be damned to see Ayreon even mentioned on Rolling Stone, they only care about massively successful bands. Because of that there was no chance of having Opeth, PT, etc on the list, even though they have a good following. But Ayreon is probably one of the most prolific and consistent prog metal bands since the 90s.

dbrooks22

This was a reader's poll.  If RS did the list themselves, Genesis would have been #1 and Mars Volta #3.  DT should obviously be top 5, but then again they were polling RS READERS.

\o\ lol /o/

I pretty much agree with all of the choices, but I don't think Rush has enough prog output to rank number one on such a list.  Also, I think DT should rank higher than TMV.  Just my two cents.

I don't know.  On a list like that, I can live with Tool being ranked higher than DT.  It's a tossup, really.

This.

Also... What does Rolling Stone know about prog?

But they did acknowledge Petrucci's guitar god status... so that's good.

CrimsonSunrise

Pink Floyd should have been #1, and I think DT ranks above both Tool and TMV.  If you look at Prog body of work, DT should be in the top 3.

I don't any issue with this poll, seems a pretty fair assessment, but if I had my way PF and Rush would be flipped.  Also, as others have said, DT would be higher than MV and PT would be in there somewhere, probably at the expense of MV.

Well now RS is FORCED to know who DT is.....maybe now, they'll give em a listen!

No Gentle Giant?

Essentially all progressive bands post 1980 can thank Gentle Giant in some way or another, IMHO.

I agree with you.  (Yes, I am praising PT)

As for the rest of it, I agree on the other 9 artists just not necessarily the order, but not by much.

I don't know if I would classify Porcupine Tree as prog. I don't know what to define them as...ambient metal/rock?

They happened to sneak in Metallica though, the video for DT is Pull Me Under/Master of Puppets

This is obviously a troll response to get me to say more good things about PT, but they're prog, and hardly metal.

Captainchaos204

What??? That list is f'in terrible... mars volta and Jethro Tull are hardly prog... I do agree with tool being ahead of DT in the drumming aspect, but idk.. that is a terrible order or prog bands. Rush is always amazing, but with ELP and King Crimson, idk how you could place who is first. lol

But.. you can't always rely on "The Internets" lol..

MasterShakezula

I am rather disappointed by the lack of Styx or Kansas.

champbassist

From the Tull write up:

QuoteIn the early 19th century, Jethro Tull invented the seed-drill, effectively giving birth to modern agriculture. About 270 years later, a British band named Jethro Tull released Aqualung

Apparently Aqualung was released in the 2070's! :rollin

BTW, I know they meant 'the early 18th century'.
