So I guess you're putting a down payment on TWO bands.  :rollin

snapple

Nah, I'm going to see if she can throw whatever money she was planning on spending on me for our next gift exchange on this. I'll also try to talk my parents into doing the same.

I've never done the "super-duper" edition of Dream Theater stuff. It all seems well worth it, even without the tickets. If I got the tickets? Well, I'd probably shit myself 7-8 times (roughly).

She's going to get mad unless you find a Ticket For Life!  :lol

So er, what's the draw for someone who doesn't have a vinyl player? A lithograph, a 0.01% chance of some free gigs, and a lovely-but-cumbersome box?

Y'know what? I'm glad this exists, and I'd love the ticket, but with that pricetag I think I'm going to pass.

If you have one, you pretty much are getting free swag with the purchase.

Digital Download (Let's just say the value is $15)
Album (~$20)
Instrumentals (~$15)
Vinyl (~$20)
DVD (~$20

It isn't too bad if you break it down.

I'm going to pass on this, the only thing worth it IMO is the ticket for life. Even if you do get it I doubt it'll be honored past this tour and if it is, it'll have a bunch of limitations to it.

Oh! It's absolutely great for someone with a vinyl player, I'm sure. I'm just being a bit mopey.

Although, if you're playing ~$40 for a CD/DVD... well, it was £8.99 on Play.com, which is equivalent to about $15. Plus, you can get the equivalent of a digital download for free by simply ripping the CD with iTunes, so I wouldn't really consider that added value on top of the CD. But the money's not necessarily the point: you're getting a lot of stuff that you won't get anywhere else. I'm just, in my own silly little self-important way, getting at the idea that producing a run of 50,000 units, for instance, would be a bit optimistic, given that the biggest draw is a copy of the album in a format that much of the fanbase would consider obsolete.

I wish I could justify it for a second, I'd love to have the most super-duper-deluxe edition 'cause I'm a big ol' DT fan and I love collecting stuff, but I can't really find a reason beyond "for the sake of having it." It's a bit... well, pointless.

I would say the Digital Download itself isn't the draw, but the fact that you get to hear it a day BEFORE the actual album comes out.

As for the Vinyl, they are becoming more popular lately. I don't have a player, but I've been wanting to get one for a while. Now, when I do, I'll have something to listen to.

Those prices seem a little high. More like.

DD $10
Album $10
Instrumentals $10
Vinyl $20
DVD $15

The digital download is useless when you can create a digital version of the album a day later on iTunes. An the instrumental versions, what on earth is the point of those?

How do you know it's gonna be through iTunes, it could just as easily be through some other service.

And the Instrumental versions are awesome. You can sing along with them, you can hear the intricacies of the music. To say, "What's the point of the instrumentals" is the same as saying, "What's the point of the stems?"

Dr. DTVT

I think the big reason for the digital download is that last album the box sets weren't shipped until release day, so people like me who pre-ordered it didn't get a copy until several days after it was released.

I'm torn...the fanboy/collector in me wants the biggest edition possible, but the broke part of me is saying just get the regular edition since I don't have a record player (nor will I ever get one).  That damn "ticket for life" though is just dangling like a carrot on a stick though.  Then if I actually did win it, it would still cost me a lot of money because even if I move close to a city they would likely tour to, I'd have to get my use out of it.

WHo am I kidding, I'm getting the special edition even if it means not paying my mortgage, and I wish I was joking about that.

Huh?

And the iTunes reference was regarding the release date when you can create digital versions of the songs when you get the actual CD...a mere 24 hours after the digital downloads become available. So why pay for them...just wait a day.

The stem instrumental versions that came with the Black Clouds Deluxe Edition. A lot of people are complaining that they aren't included in this one as well.

Sorry, I misunderstood the iTunes comment. But still, getting to hear the album one day early is awesome. Some people have been waiting for this album since January. If there's a way to own it (digital or otherwise) a day early, I'd say its totally worth it. If there was no special edition, but they said, "You can get the digital copy of the album a day early" I'd pay for it anyway, and then buy the hard copy.

I apologize if this has been answered, but what is a ticket for life?  Does it mean you can go to any DT show in any country and follow them date after date without having to pay a dime?  Does it mean you get the best seat in the house?  For Seinfeld fans, I assume it would be like when Kramer got a pass for free coffee for life after burning himself with hot coffee.

Also, is the ticket ransferrable to another person if the winner couldn't make a certain show or decided he needed money and wanted to sell it on eBay?  So many questions...

We're just different then I guess. If I've waited that long,  I can surely wait one more day for the exact same thing.

And I still don't know what the stem versions are but I'll take your word for it.

I'd be happy to pay a couple of quid, but I'd agree with you inasmuch as it doesn't add $15 of value, for instance.

The stems are isolated tracks of each individual instrument. So, just the drums, just the guitar, just the bass, etc. They were included in the BCSL special edition.

I had no idea they even did that. I can see how that would be useful for musicians wanting to learn the parts. Might be more lucrative though if they sold those tracks all separately...kinda like how Vai has his 'naked' tracks on iTunes.

I think I promised myself to wait for the day it comes out, and run to the store and buy the regular one. Mainly because if I order something like this, it'll take 3 weeks in the mail to Norway, and I'll have to buy the regular while waiting. BUT, they solved it by making it available for digital download the day before release! Then of course I'm getting this. Awesome boxes with bunches of geeky stuff is the best thing there is.

Don't you subscribe to Wimp (Discount through canal digital) or Spotify? Cause they usually release albums on the day, or even the day before.. Which kinda makes the offer for a digital download kinda redundant. At least in my case.

Shout out to all you american people, try out Spotify! I've heard its being released in the US soon .. or it might have been released allready. Kinda neat to be able to stream almost any song you can think of for a relatively low price. YOu can even download the spotify app to your iPhone which lets you create "offline" playlists.. meaning it works as if you bought the songs from iTunes or some equivalent. (Before you flame me, I dont know of any other such services, you may already have access to better alternatives, just thought I'd give you the heads up)

The digital download has a value of $0.

I'm buying the album in CD and vinyl format, and they'd just be covering their asses in case the box sets don't get to their destination on the release date.

Goodness, kind of a pitiful presentation and array of goods. Never Enough, I know. It's sad this is all they can come up with when trying to create a unique box.
