Dream Team

I believe ADTOE is going to be GREAT, and my admittedly flawed reasoning is as follows: I really really like the first single OTBOA. Compare this to my feelings on their other singles:

WDADU: was SS a single? My least favorite on the album
I&W: PMU, AD, TTT - good stuff obviously, but I like the other 5 songs better
Awake: SM & Lie - 2 of my least favorite - Lie's only good for MP's drumming during the bridge and 2 great JP solos
FII: HY - one of my least favorites from this album (Budokan version is much better but doesn't count)
SFAM: THE - my least favorite except for Regression. The Home edit is an abortion and never should have seen the light of day
SDOIT: Misunderstood and SS I think were the singles - my least favorite track from Side 1 and SS doesn't really count as a song, it's a "movement"
TOT: AIA - my least favorite except for HTF
OV: I think IWBY was one of the singles, forgot the other one - anyway that whole album is meh except for OV & TROAE
SC: Forsaken & CM - I like 3 of the other songs better than these
BC&SL: AROP & Wither - my 2 least favorite from this album

So there you have it. IMO most of the singles stink compared with the rest of the album. Since I feel OTBOA is a very strong song, it bodes well that I will enjoy ADTOE immensely.

On The Back Of Angels        - Pull Me Under         - Basic Dream Theater-ish single
Build Me Up, Break Me Down - Another Day          - Pop-ish song
Lost Not Forgotten             - Take the Time        - LaBrie strains his voice more, 70-ish keyboard sounds?
This is the Life                   - Surrounded           - Slow, almost ballad-feeling
Bridges in the Sky               - Metropolis pt.1      - Best song in terms of dynamics
Outcry                             - Under A Glass Moon - Grandiloquent intro, Yes-sounding?
Far From Heaven                - Wait For Sleep       - Piano/Vocal duet
Breaking All Illusions            - Learning To Live     - Myung Lyrics, longest song in the album

Congratulations on sparking what could be the most annoying debate on DTF since last week or so.

Wahhhhh

Reading the translation really raised my excitement about this album. The tracks in which I'm interested the most at this point are Lost Not Forgotten and Beneath The Surface.

Definitely.

I'm really interested in how Petrucci seems to have stepped back musically to let the vox/keys/bass have more room to shine.  I'm not saying he would have, but he could have easily made this album the ultimate monument to his abilities as a guitarist, and it seems he went completely the opposite way.

I think it'd be amazingly cryptic if the song structures for every track matched up like they do with OTBOA and PMU.

But why those animals?

TOT: Ravens
8V: Octopus
SC: Ants
BL&SL: Elephants
ADTOE: Frogs

SO what next? Leopards or skunks? Bear could be good choice.

Ravens - Harbingers of bad news.
Octopus - Eight limbs.
Ants - Look tiny and chaotic, but work together to build systematic larger communities.
Elephants - Have long memories.
Frogs - errrr - Plagues of Egypt, perhaps?

"When the frog jumps into your life it may indicate now is a time to find opportunities in transition. We see animal symbolism of transition with the frog in its unique growth cycle. The frog undergoes incredible transformations to reach the destination of full adulthood, and so do we as humans."

Frogs, Locusts, and now Sheep/Lamb it seems...  Now all we need are Lions and we have Syllabiblical  ;D

I think... if you look on the sleeve, where the frog's included, you can see that it's on a lilypad, with a shark under the water.

I imagine Hugh Syme was giggling his little heart out when he came up with that one, as it's a Dramatic Turn of Events inasmuch as a shark is in a garden pond, and the shark can be described as being Beneath the Surface. Most of his images do involve interpreting the titles in as many ways as possible.

There, on the far right.

Looks like a normal fish to me.  :|

Its really hard to tell with that small resolution though.

Maybe it's a frog eating fish.

Or even a shark-eating frog... now THAT would be a dramatic turn of events.

BlobVanDam

I think it's a catshark. I know nothing about sharks, so this is from 2 minutes of random googling.

The artwork fits what the bands going through. You have a clown in this circus, which symbolizes the band, he's on a unicycle hoping to get across ADToE. The plane is the fans watching from afar, since it has the Majesty symbol.

chrisbDTM

i see it as, the break in the rope was the dramatic event(s) and the unicyclist made it overand has smooth riding ahead to the future

Ben_Jamin

Agreed. But they haven't made it across yet, The band are on the tightrope now.

Guys, I see an FPS game tie-in with the single. Something like COD:OTBOA

ariich

See, I think aesthetically it looks quite nice. But the concept is quite amusing and a bit silly.

It's well composed, but while crucial to the concept, the red-wash makes it look kind of ugly. He could've at least put a black circle around it, like the James Bond intro, for instance. Or, text at the bottom saying something like "Target locked." It's not a very interesting execution of the concept, and it's not a particularly clever spin.

Not to mention, I don't think the concept has much to do with the song, bar the fact that it vaguely resembles a line in it. It's like he heard the line "lamb to the slaughter" and went "oh, that'll do." It doesn't have anything to do with the lyrical themes. It's not very elegant, and doesn't encapsulate the song at all. "Hey! It's like a... um... lamb!"

I don't hate it, but I'm not impressed.

EDIT: Even putting angel-wings on a lamb would've been better. The lamb to the slaughter is then implicit, and it's got something to do with the song's title, at the very least.

@Darklord: If you read my earlier post, the clown is the band.

Mbarak

In my own twisted mind, the sheep opens its mouth, large pointy teeth start to grow, and a tentacle-like tongue flies towards the sniper gripping his neck and ripping it from his body.

But that's just me.

Perhaps someone here could come up with a more suitable cover?
