I don't hate it, but it's not that special either. Just like the rest of Awake...

ScioPath

Up there with some of my favorites. Top 20 at least. Especially the Score version.

i prefer the studio version studio version than the score version.

I actually listened to Awake for the first time this past week (I've only been a fan for about a year, was able to find physical CDs of all DT albums but Awake [and WDADU])...

My honest reaction was that Innocence Faded sounded "gay"(lame vocals) and not particularly interesting musically in any way, until the "Rush" parts, which sounded cool (because I like some rush).  I have no idea what the lyrics are as of my 1st & second listen through... sometimes people can unduly elevate a song in their minds, musically, because the lyrics or song topic are legitimately good.

As of my 2nd listen, this might be my least favorite song on awake... certainly bottom 3.

Infinite Cactus

Top 15 song for me. The outro is incredible. But then again, so is the whole song.

I don't hate it, just not a great DT song. This and CIAW were the reason I struggled to get into Awake when it first came out. didn't like either of them, so 2 out of the first three tracks were a bit meh.
I don't tend to skip them these days but there was a ttime I would.

Funny, because Caught in a Web is one of the first songs on Awake I liked.

To be honest, my favorite tracks on that album are the first three and Lie, with Innocence Faded at the very top.

...Yeah, I like the least proggy songs on the album.  No clue why, since my favorite song on I&W is Learning to Live.

exact opposite.
Then why WAS it made?  As you can see from the results, there is no hate for IF.

I think that's just his posting style. Very "C'mon, gimme a good reason why this is NOT so" and provoking, but I wouldn't say trolling. Like, the SFAM thread he created, the way he worded the OP was very provocative, but I think it's just a strong opinion with some ignorant forum knowledge.

I don't hate Innocence Faded, but it is easily my least favorite track on Awake.  The outro is good though.  I'm not a fan of the vocals on this song.  I can't comprehend entire sections of them without consulting a lyric sheet.  Hell some Opeth growls are more discernible than these.  That said LaBrie's performance on Score was much better than the studio version.

reneranucci

Just like most of Awake, I don't find anything in the song that motivates me to listen to it. I will probably never listen to it again, and I'll be alright.

The outtro is one of my favorite parts of a DT song.  The rest of the song is kind of meh.

jdprsaga

does "don't like" <=> "hate"?? Why are there people who think that if you don't like something, then you hate it??

In my case, innocence faded is my least favorite song from Awake, maybe because when i listened to awake when i was 13 i found IF like the most outdated song from the album (not that i was right or wrong, i was 13 how much could i knew about it?, but that was the feeling i got stuck in my head)

i do liked the solo and outro.. it sounded a lot like extreme and i do remember skipping all the beginning just to listen to the solo and outro.

jsem

I don't hate it. I think it's painful to listen to though. I only feel that way about IF & POW.

Because you believe that after you're gone, Labrie will carry on?

I don't hate Innocence Faded. Love the song, and especially JLB's performance of it on Score.

Pantherize

I'm going to have to be in the minority here.  I do hate this song and it is my least favorite DT track...by far.  Now given that Awake is my favorite DT album of all time and the fact that I've been listening to it since it was released, I'd say I come by my hatred of it honestly.

I love every other song on Awake but I can't hack IF. Not to say the entire song has no redeeming value, but I just cannot stand the vocals.  The background aaaahhhhhh's, the glass shattering highs that James hits, it all makes me cringe. The song also sounds too happy for the album. I LOVE JLB, and he's in my top 3 of all time for singers so it's not that I don't appreciate his range or his ability to hit highs. Just in this song it's like nails on a chalkboard. I've tried so hard to like this song (and I've listened to it a lot because my first copy of Awake was on cassette). With Awake being my favorite album it would just be so much easier to listen to the whole thing, but I go out of my way to skip this track because for me it just kills the vibe of the whole album. :(  Never thought about it this way but maybe that's why it's my least favorite DT song of all time...because it's the only stain on an otherwise perfect 10 album.

I'll probably get creamed for this, but I've never actually heard the Score version because I always skip it out of habit. Just the opening riff triggers my skip track finger. Haha.

Then just listen to the Score version, and you'll be cured.  Better than then the original.  It doesn't even have "the faithful liver wing", although it does still have "what is if time disappears" IIRC

OK...just listened to the Score version and if THAT version had been on Awake, I wouldn't have hated it so much. A lot of my animosity for the song really is the Ahhhhhhs in the background vocals during the chorus. Maybe the contrast of JLB's high vocals with the sort of cheesy ahhhhhhhs is what bugged me. Problem is, I've heard the song so many times, I can't unhear them even when they're not there in the Score version. Haha.

Told ya!   ;D

Score is so amazing that way.  Sacrificed Sons, Octavarium and War Inside My Head are more preferable on Score to me as well.

I just listened to the score version on the way to work, it is a great track.....by the way the spirit carries on is awesome on that disc too!  :) Who am I kidding the whole triple cd is great.

Dublagent66

I never disliked the song.  Some of my buddies would say that the chorus is pretty cheesy and I could see why but it didn't bother me that much.  Definitely not one of the better songs on Awake, but when I heard the Score version, it blew me away.  I have a much better appreciation for the song now.

contest_sanity

Didn't MP once make a comment along the lines of "DT could never do another song like IF because the fans wouldn't have it?"  Maybe I'm making that up, but if in fact he did, why would he think that?  At least in this poll, the majority is heavily in favor of the song.

Jamesman42

Because it sounds dated, as awesome as it is.

But couldn't they write a song in the same vein that sounded "current?"

SDFprowler

I love Innocence Faded.  Labrie sounds awesome and the outro instrumental section is incredible.  I don't understand the hate.  Just my opinion.

Good music is timeless.  Anyone who rejects music that sounds "dated" really doesn't have an opinion worth considering when it comes to music.

The Fish-era Marillion albums all sound like they're straight out of the 80's, but I'd love them just as much if they were released last year.  Actually, I didn't hear a single note of a Marillion song until last year and "Misplaced Childhood" still blew me away.  I can't fathom disliking something because it sounds aged.
