DT's formula since Scenes hasn't changed with the release of their new album and lineup?

But the formula has changed.  MP is no longer apart of the equation.  It doesn't bother me.  I'm looking forward to it.

Right but even with his departure, would you be annoyed if they were still constructing songs in the same way they have since Scenes as if nothing has changed?

It would bother me.  Their stuff since 6DOIT, IMO, has been completely formulaic and lacks the imagination that went into previous albums.  They always do the same thing : cool riff, repeat, cool riff, repeat, long wanking solos that don't match the rest of the song, lather, rinse repeat.  And don't get me started on lyrics.  I'm hoping this time they're more creative and mix it up a bit.

Statements like this, which contradict factual evidence, really bother me.

Have you listened all their songs since SFAM? How do these fit in the description you've made?
The Glass Prison
Blind Faith
Misunderstood
Disappear
6DOIT
As I Am
Vacant
Stream of Conciousness
In The Name of God
The Root of All Evil
The Answer Lies Within
These Walls
I Walk Beside YOu
Panic Attack
Never Enough
Octavarium
Forsaken
Constant Motion
Repentance
Prophets of War
ANTR
Wither
The Best of Times
TCOT

And, the instrumental sections and solos of these songs fit really well IMO (Never Enough, Forsaken, ITNOG, Constant Motion, TCOT, Octavrium are all awesome and very fitting IMO).

First of all, I said SINCE 6DOIT, so you need to pair down that list.  I mistakenly didn't exclude ballad-types of songs.  Obviously, they're a 'little' different, but I'm not that interested in their slower stuff.  Other than that, I stand by my claim.  They plug in a formula and whip out a tune.  Very little creativity. Octavarium isn't too bad, I guess, if you can make it past the first, what, 8 minutes without falling asleep.    I'm hopeful they get a little more creative for the next album.

According to your criteria to define formulaic, they probably won't, then.

That.

The whole subject of this thread is pretty generalised. As ren said, there have been plenty of songs that don't fit the standard song construction that supposedly is all they do now, so I don't see a problem.

Yes.  Even though it's produced good songs, the old formula is no longer valid because MP left the band.  To try having everyone else fill MP's role in the same way would almost certainly not work.  I'd much prefer if the new incarnation of the band started from scratch and re-delegated the roles.  Inevitably some things would stay the same, but that's not a bad thing either.
