And maybe they should have left Lifting Shadows off in favor of Eve/To Live Forever/Don't Look Past Me.
None of these were real options for inclusion on Awake, AFAIK.

Just a wish. I think Lie/Eve/Scarred would have been an awesome 3 hit combo.

hefdaddy42

I'm sure it would have.  But Lifting Shadows is godly.

I wouldn't remove a single song from Awake. They're all just so lovely.  :)

i wish they never would have let kevmo go?

Not saying I don't like Rudess, because I do. But knowing how good Kevmo is at creating an atmospheric element, could you imagine him on Scenes? Chills.

This is being a bit nit picky but I wish they had ended Misunderstood around 8:46 rather than extend it to more chaotic keyboard weirdness.  Actually even better shorten the chaotic keyboard weirdness alot.  It starts at 6:38 and goes on for 3 minutes.  This is a really GREAT song until about the 8 minute mark and then it's like, "is this ever going to end!!!".

Just so no one "misunderstands"  :) , this song ranks at 26 in my personal DT rankings.  I'm just saying that it could be in my top 15.

Samsara

Interesting replies. Thanks all.

One thing I find really cool is that a few of you have spotlighted the desire for the band to stop doing the "write/record as you go" approach for more traditional writing, refining, and then recording.

I couldn't agree more. The LTE-approach to writing/recording, as it hits my ears, really has taken away some of what I enjoyed about Dream Theater and its songs.

My books available for purchase on Amazon:

Jason Slater: For the Sake of Supposing
Roads to Madness: The Touring History of Queensrÿche (1981-1997)

Algo Fonix

I wish they would've done something more with that riff at the end of The Dark Eternal Night.  I like it better than the rest of the song, actually.

Exactly.  He quit, and then they let him go.

Oh...so...you guys are wishing they would have like, tied him up and locked him in the studio, and physically *not let him* leave the band? :lol

Although I guess an unlawful imprisonment situation could make for some emotionally-charged music, for better or worse.

What does that even mean?

I'm assuming he's saying "let him go" as in "let him leave." Not in more contextually common "let him go" as in "fired him."

Implode

I just thought of the image of Kevin Moore on stage shackled to his keyboard singing, "And I'll never be open again... :'("

I wish the sitar solo in "Home" was played on a real sitar live (even an electric one will do)

So true.  I downloaded the edited version of Home from the "Greatest Hit" compilation just because it leaves that part out.  However, there's too much of the good stuff cut out of it.  It's like a little porn scene in the the middle of one of the most awesome songs they've made.  It almost ruins it for me.

My son, 11, shares my love for DT, but he knows nothing about this song because I don't let him listen to it.  Same with As I Am and the F word.

The Reckoning is awesome

I might be the only DT fan who thinks this but I wish Systematic Chaos was a complete concept album about monsters and evil things and they replaced the non-monster tracks such as Constant Motion, Repentance, and Prophets of War with more monster and evil things themed songs.  And of course they would name the album something different to go along with the monster and evil things theme.  As it stands right now SC seems like a disjointed album to me, but I kind of like the monster theme even if the lyrics are kind of corny at times.

The Greatest hit version of As I Am censors the F word.

As for the porn thing in home, it only comes out of the right channel.  I imagine there's a way to delete the right channel, then mirror it with the left, but I don't know how.

It's not like your son can't go to YouTube and listen to these songs or download the respective mp3's. Also, you might not use the F word in your home, but a lot of people out on the streets and in the school and everywhere else (ie, real life) use it.

Systematic Chaos would still need to include part of the 12 step suite, so they couldn't really make a concept album until its over. Unless they make it a musically conceptual album and not lyrically

Interesting. I'd probably broaden it more, and say it could be about demons, or inner-demons. ITPOE about dealing with a dark master and his influence in you, "Forsaken" about dealing with a vampire and her power in you, CM about a psychological demon, TDOE about a physical, monstrous demon, "Repentance" about dealing with vices as an inner demon, POW...uhm war I guess?, and TMOLS about dealing with guilt as an inner demon.

Really, the whole album is about battling something bad, be it a physical presence or something within you.

What does that have to do with him setting an example for his son, and raising him the way he wants to raise him?

Exactly.  Plus he doesn't just go into the computer without supervision.  Eventually, he'll get that freedom when he gets older.

Also, he knows all about the F word and hears kids saying it at school (and he goes to a Christian school).  However, if he saw me jammin' out to music with all kinds of profanity and the like, he would most definitely think that I'm giving the OK for him to say that.

Raziel666

Of course Durg can raise his son anyway he wants. I'm just sayin' I find it too much to ban an almost 8 minute song for the F word (which is heard once!).

Same goes for the almost 13 minute Home and Victoria having fun.

Just my 2c...

Dream Team

I find the comments by Durg and hefdaddy very refreshing. The same situation exists in my home, and I would like to add that the moaning part is also just stupid . . . why not have the guy moaning too if it's supposed to be integral to the story? Just stupidity that I bet MP was 99% responsible for.

Mladen

I dunno, I was never bothered by that part. Playing it among people would obviously make a difference, though.

That's too metaphorical, I just want some more good, blatant monster songs.  I'm not that into the whole AA suite thing so I couldn't care if they dropped Repentance for a better monster song for that album.

Hmmm, then I would suggest other bands, who write about monsters more often than not? Dream Theater have never struck me as being a band that would write "blatant monster songs" without some sort of metaphorical meaning to them, however, TDEN is probably about as close as they'll ever get to anything like that. Otherwise, I don't see them doing anything like that again, so if it's that kind of music you're looking for, I'm sure there are tons of other artists (metal or otherwise) who write songs like that! :tup
