SDOIT could use a bit of reworking on the mix or mastering or something. Something about it does beg for a bit reworking. It does sound good, but not as good as it could be.

The mix is mostly fine, but it's too loud - you can hear clipping on several spots on the album (particularly the breakdown before the scratch-scratch part in The Glass Prison). I don't think that we'll get a good remaster of SDOIT, though.

S&A sounded really good, especially by modern standards (in other words, not as good as stuff like PT or newer Opeth, but much better than your averaged compressed-to-death CD), so this is probably a good thing.

Overall, 6DOIT sounds good (easily the best "sounding" CD of the Rudess era), with the only drawback being that the heavy songs/parts sound a bit too much muddy, but considering what compressed messes the next few CDs sounded like, I'll take it.

SDOIT sounds bad but due to many factors... It also is easily the worst album for JLB, it's just poor vocal delivery.

I think I disagree with every word of this post.  Except maybe "the".

This is so wrong in many levels.

It's good, but it sounds awful. A remix might just push it in a better direction.

Listening to it right now, sounds great. A remix might make it better though.

The mix is perfectly fine, if a little harsh, but that's apparantly the sound the band wanted. The MASTERING is f*cking awful, thanks to the dumb-ass record companiy and their stupid "loudness wars". The thing's damn near unlistenable - Good news if we're getting a better version, because it's some of the best music Rush have made (One Little Victory, Secret Touch), and deserves to be heard as it was intended to be.

If I remember correctly, Rush said that the problems with the sound already occurred during the recording, not during the mastering (I don't have an exact source on that, but I remember reading this). As far as I know, the album already sounded substandard to them before the mastering, and the mastering itself made it even worse.

tri.ad is correct.  I'd still like to listen to another mix.

I do like that S & A had a modern sound but still have an organic sound to it.  There was separation to the instruments and they were able to breath.  A big sticking point to me of late.

I hear you. I love the mix of Static Impulse. The drums sound powerful and boomy, the guitars have a hell-lot presence and the vocals sound in your face. It sounds powerful but not over-compressed like most modern metal releases.
