Hi, everybody, my first post here.

There's a recent interview with Rich Chycki (who engineered and mixed Rush S&A) in this site:
https://www.sonnoxplugins.com/pub/plugins/User-Richard_Chycki.htm?i=Web_eNEWS_FEB2011
Look that part:

"Tell us what's next on your plate?

I will be completing the recording and mixing of the rest of Rush's Clockwork Angels CD in 2011, recording and mixing a new live DVD of Rush's current tour as well as doing some recording for Dream Theater. "

Since he seems very busy at the moment remixing Vapor Trails for Rush... https://ww2.richardchycki.com/
Maybe he's not exactly recording with DT now, but will he be involved with the mix of the new album?
Personally, I would love it.
Take care,
André

Interesting. Maybe they'll be using more than one engineer? I recall JP saying Paul Northfield was to engineer the new album as well.

The Letter M

Wait...did MP say Paul was present at the sessions for MMPLM?

Either way, looks like we'll get Paul Northfield with Mike Portnoy AND Dream Theater this year! Go figure...

As for Rich on DT, that'll be great! New DT & Rush mixed by the same guy? It'll be like I've died and gone to heaven!

Welcome devieira!

I would be totally cool getting this guy on board with DT.  S&A not only has great music, but it sounds great too.  Nothing but good things could happen.

Since I'm not a Rush fan... how good did that guy mix S&A?

I'm more excited that someone, ANYONE, is doing a remix of Vapor Trails.

Ah...okay. wrong P-name associated with 80's Rush. Oops.

Thanks for the welcome!
To me, S&A is the best cd I know in terms of recording and mixing (I'm not a professional, just a music listener). Not so heavy, but it really has a beautiful and huge sound, with the instruments well balanced. Hum, the songs are pretty good too!  ;)

Well we've known this for a week or two now, the problem is that the album needs far more than a simple remix.

I love Rush's Vapor Trails. Awesome Album!

It's good, but it sounds awful. A remix might just push it in a better direction.

Listening to it right now, sounds great. A remix might make it better though.

You really think it sounds great?  This album is universally hailed as being one of the worst-sounding albums of recent years, especially by a big-name artist.  I've never even been able to make it through the entire thing.

Hopefully it will be better than Dream Theater's Greatest Hit remix, that was horrible. Lost all the dynamics from the remix, overly compressed.

Well, I guess Rush was not completely happy with the production, but sound is subjective. I kind of like the loudness and rawness of it.

I loved the S&A mix. If it sounds anything close to it, I'll be happy :)

Yes. S&A mix is good. I like it a lot also.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I love the drum sound in S&A. The snare drum sounds very organic.  :D

Let's not forget that Rich Chycki played guitar with James Labrie in Winter Rose.

For anyone who needs further reason to hate the sound on Vapor Trails I present you with this-

www.wpapu.com/sounds/rushgasm.mp3

Listen to how out of place the One Little Victory bit sounds.

dongringo

I too am glad Vapor Trails is getting remixed. It quite frankly sounds like crap. It'd also be nice if he remixed SDOIT.

There is no reason to remix SDOIT.

Well, it's no where near as bad as Vapor Trails, but I listen to music on high end headphones/amps/dacs which are very revealing of recording quality and my ears tell me every time that 6DOIT is definitely a bad recording. Vapor Trails is much worse though.

Plasmastrike

I've never heard of (or noticed) SDOIT having bad sound.

Hmm..

Holy shit. I mean, I knew Vapor Trails was poorly mastered but... holy shit.

Jamesman42

SDOIT could use a bit of reworking on the mix or mastering or something. Something about it does beg for a bit reworking. It does sound good, but not as good as it could be.

This news is awesome. Snake and Arrows' sound is great, great stuff.
\o\ lol /o/

blackngold29

Cool stuff, thanks for posting. Never heard of him, not that I know any mixers/producers, but if he's good enough for Rush he's good enough for me.
