This thing is a monster.

It builds so slowly, like something trying to creep up on you, and then it unleashes its wrath.

And if you can't feel the "from a god to God save me" bit, then the wordless chorus, something is wrong with you.

I used to bash it for having a weird-ass ending but my new appreciation for ambient, noisy, weird music has helped me love it. The way I see it, 99% of music I listen to has a conventional structure.

Why can't just one song end in genuine WTF fashion?

bosk1

Really good song.  *appreciates*  I probably rank it my third or fourth on the album total, but that's only because the songs that rank ahead of it are JUST THAT GOOD!  Ranking it feels a bit silly, like saying "Yeah, somebody gave me a million dollars for my birthday.  I'd say that was the third or fourth best gift I got."  If your other gifts were really that good, why even bother ranking them, right?  But...uh, yeah, really good song.

due to mislabeling a song years ago, I thought I had this song and only found out a few years ago I didn't.

anyways, when I first heard the song in jamesman's car, I was shocked that he was playing a DT song I had never heard.

Since then I have come to deeply appreciate this song

TL

Incredible song. It has an absolutely incredible buildup, and just such a cool vibe throughout.

MetalManiac666

Absolutely fantastic song.  DT has not written another song like it.

Cool Chris

Some songs grow on me, they get better and better the more I hear them. Fewer songs knock me on my ass from the first listen and never diminish in appreciation. Misunderstood is one of those songs. I knew about 30 seconds in that this was going to be a special song, and then that part Kev mentioned kicks in and it goes to a whole new level. You can really feel the each member of the band firing on all cylinders here. The only thing I don't care for, and it is a minor beef, is the drums during CJS' last "...misunderstood." They seem a little too dominant and overpowering.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

This is one of the songs that makes SDOIT special. Sadly, it was a direction that appeared on this album, and then disappeared again, never to be seen again.

When I first listened to Six Degrees it was the first song after "The Glass Prison" to connect for me. Kinda holds a special place.

I love this song so much. The guitar work at the beginning of the song is gorgeous. I'm so glad I saw it live during the Progressive Nation tour. Top 10 song for me.

YngVai

It was on a mix cd a friend of mine burned me when we were both starting to discover DT.  I remember hearing it the first time walking through downtown Dallas, and just being floored by that melody.

Jarlaxle

I love this song, but I do think the ending drags on for a little bit too long.

This song is awesome one of my favorites!  :metal

antigoon

It's really such a cool, unique song in DT's catalog. I'm so happy I got to see it live on PN 08.

The Letter M

I like this song, ending and all. I see it as their tribute to The Beatles, both with the backwards guitar solo and the fade-outs at the end. Good song and I think it's the album's underdog song. A lot of people immediately love TGP, most love SDOIT, and many praise BF and TGD, while "Disappear" is many fans' favorite ballad-esque DT song... but "Misunderstood" often gets left apart from them, IMO, but I'm glad they made it and released it.

Great song, from start to finish, ending and all.  It didn't used to be, but it is now my favorite 6DOIT song. :coolio

MykeHavoc

I like it. Don't love it, don't hate it. But its got a sweet mid-range spot for me.

Gorille85

I love that song!! The ending, the lyrics, the build-up, everything! Top 5 song for me I think. Dissapear holding the top spot.

fadetoblackdude7

Awesome song. I get the chills every time JLB sings the "Playing a lion..." stanza. Hearing it live directly after Beyond This Life was amazing as well!  :metal

moffatt

Brilliant song, I hope that in the future they will try something like this again.

Zydar

Great great song. I especially like the 'Playing a lion being led to a cage' bit.

The Curious Orange

I love the atmosphere of the piece, the soundscape of it. I love the little noodlings just before the line "It challenges the essence of my soul..." Sends shivers down my spine everytime. I also consider myself lucky to have heard this live.
One of my favourite DT songs. I don't want the band to lose their metal edge, but I do wish they'd rediscover their softer, melodic side.

Ben_Jamin

Love how it starts acoustically then goes into an all electric dynamic ending. The way JLB says "world" is pretty great, the way the melodies he sings are presented are amazing and fit his vocals real well.

That.

hefdaddy42

I almost love it, but I've gotta admit, the outro kills me.

pmigueljr

This song reminds me how I love the 1st CD on 6DOIT... I can't skip any track on that...

Great song, and I loved seeing it in concert.

What song were you listening to in place of this one?

skydivingninja

The song is fucking amazing until the stupid screechy guitar.  The outro in general is just very drawn out.  Not bad or anything (except for the screechy part) but it lasts FOREVER.

My thoughts exactly.
Misunderstood (Edit) > Misunderstood (Album Version)

I love Misunderstood, probably Dream Theater's best written song and easily a top ten song from them.

The outro fits the feelings with the song wonderfully, and is part of what makes it great.  When you're feeling that way you really do just trail off and get lost in your own thoughts.  Listening to the song I can really get absorbed in the thoughts and feel connected to it, and when the outro comes in it just fits the mindset and mood, letting you trail off haphazardly with it.

once, a girl that i didn't knew that much found me in trouble and she was so kind to help me with it (i never thought she would) so, another day i ask her if she wanted to go have dinner with me, just to show her how much i appreciated her help.. but she thought i was trying to hit on her.. so she disappeared for a while. i didn't knew why. after a few weeks we saw each other and after we manage any misunderstanding, now we are really close friends..

   I guess this thread is not about this..
