I'm betting the announcement will come anywhere from December 1st - 23rd

Samsara

Here's a name I haven't heard talked about:

JERRY GASKILL

He's King's X's drummer. KX has been on the decline and outside of doing some short runs here and there, have been quiet.

He can sing, he can play, and he's available...and he's also fairly local (he lives in Jersey). Just speculation.

Aren't they planning on doing a new album sometime relatively soon? Obviously it'd be great for Jerry to find a more successful gig, but it'd make me sad if it hurt King's X in any way. Seeing them live is a real treat.

On a side note, I recently pre-ordered their new live CD/DVD, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

^This.  Plus, while he is a great drummer and I love his work in King's X, I have never heard any playing of his that would lead me to believe he has the chops to pull of DT's music.  Interesting name to drop nonetheless.

Samsara

Complete speculation. Although Jerry does have the chops, make no mistake about it. It would be a challenge (as it would for any drummer), but he could do it.

I am also eagerly awaiting the 2 CD/DVD set to get to me. It's out at the end of the month, so it's a little early Christmas gift to myself.

He plays some really interesting stuff, but I've never heard him play any complex polyrythms, play odd time signatures that change every few measures, or utilize a lot of the types of effects DT's music users.  Not saying he can't, but I've never heard him play anything that leads me to believe he can.  Again, not to take anything away from his abilities, but I've just never heard him play the style of drum DT's music demands.

Sweetness. The chick could have left out the part about the Rev's overdose. Saying he died would have been just fine.

there isn't anything in that clip that is news.  we all know they've had auditions, we all know an announcement is coming "soon" and we all know they are going into the studio in January.

Jarlaxle

But we haven't had official confirmation that they were going to announce it.

You needed official confirmation that they were eventually going to tell us who their new drummer is?

Or was your post sarcastic?

I believe he's sarcastic

Oh, well in that case so was my post. As is this one, and possibly my next three.

What I meant was we didn't know if they were going to wait until their CD release to reveal their drummer or whatever other ways you can think of. Unless I've missed some other articles/interviews.

umm.....all he said was an announcement "soon."  That could be next week, next month or next year.

No we didn't know but we were 99% certain that wouldn't happen because there's no way they'd keep the info hidden while recording and producing an album.

I was just speculating, its probably happened before. And the connotations of "soon" mean within a week or two like 98% of the time.

I'll be surprised if they tell us sooner than early January, when they go into the studio. Hell, it might even take longer.

JP saying "soon" in that interview means nothing, as has already been pointed out.

lithium112

Wow what non-news. Keep in mind that JP didn't say "soon" - the lady at the beginning of the video said that the announcement is "coming soon".

JP - "Well, we haven't made that announcement yet".

That's all he said on the subject.

Jarlaxle

What I don't like is that it's always "Mike Portnoy's replacement". Why can't it just be DT's new drummer?

tri.ad

JP could have said "You wanna know who the drummer is? I ain't gonna tell you, no no no" and it wouldn't have changed any of the content in the interview.

I second this subtle, yet important difference in wording.

maybe since us all constantly asking who the drummer is they wont tell us
perhaps if we get everyone on earth to seem like they dont care maybe dream theater will tell us

Progmetty

This kinda reminds me of the craze that took place on the Metallica forums before they announced Jason Newsted's replacement in 2003.

There are probably DT fans out there who haven't been following things as closely as we have. This kind of thing is more for them.
I also like how, any time these guys have a DT related story, they play I Walk Beside You from Score in the background. Someone there must really like that song.  :lol

Not really getting the hate for this post..

In The latest interview with JP, he said that he didnt know when they were going to announce it.  So yeah after watching the ArtisanNews video, we can pretty much tell that they will announce it before heading to the studio.

SnakeEyes

I think they should get James LaBrie to be his replacement.  James started on drums before becoming a singer.  So, I think they should give him the job, now.  And, replace LaBrie with Mike Portnoy on vocals.  Growl vocals.  All day, all night.

Yeah, but whatever, who cares?  He overdosed.
