Today's choices are brought to you by the letter H. :neverusethis:

Hollow Years and Hell's Kitchen are beautiful in their own ways, so good call!

Home so low, OTOH, is something I respectfully disagree with, but hey, it's your list, not mine.

Jirpo

Good choices! Home and Hollow Years would be slightly higher for me :)

22. Fatal Tragedy
Another great DT song. The main part is great, but after the heavy organ part - with the heavy JP riff - the song turns from great to excellent. Especially when JP's soaring riff begins (about 2:50), the song just gets better. The part beginning at 4:00-ish is also very good, especially how JR's keys plays on top of that epic riff, and continues to do so wonderfully until JP's solo hits. It's not one of his best solos - but works. JR's solo is not one of his best either, none of them serve as a climax to the song - but rather keeps it at the impressive quality it already reached. The ending is also brilliant, just brilliant.

21. The Glass Prison
That first riff man. It's excellent. The second riff (wah-wah), with the famous MP beat to it is also heavy and awesome. The first few minutes of this song are just what heavy DT was supposed to be all about. Seriously, those ARPEGGIOS! JP is a beast. When the song takes a turn around 6 minutes in, to more of a groove-heavy type of section with chants and everything the song shows its diversity, still heavy. There is one more high point on this song for me, and that is "HHEEEELLPP MEEE, CANT BREAK OFF THIS PRISON ALL ALONE" or whatever it is - it's great. I don't care too much for the solos on this one though, and it's quite long - but nevertheless a great song.

20. In The Presence of Enemies
Talk about long and progressive. Part 1 > Part 2 obviously. Part 1 would be a top 10 DT song if I had seperated it, it's epic to the max. It drags on and on with part 2 though, even though there are moments when part 2 is great - like at 4:20, and even that heavy riff with the JP/MP chanting. But generally it drags on and on, which is sad - as part 1 is masterful. But yeah, it's a great listen even if it's a bit too long and could've been condensed into a top 10 maybe top 5 DT song.

I'll definitely be done before August with mine, I'll be gone the first week of August and will wanna finish.

Ħ

Excellent choices.  But I disagree that Part 1 > Part 2.

MasterShakezula

Well, 3 great choices, yet again!   :tup

Fatal Tragedy's another of the few songs from that album that I like

TGP is easily among DT's  heaviest and most brutal tunes and is my favorite part of the 12-step-thing.

And I agree with you on all of your parts about ITPOE.

Excellent choices.  But I disagree that Part 1 > Part 2.

First one here that's have the same opinion i got about Part 2 is better than Part 1. Was kind of suprised first time i visited here and everyone thought part 1 was better. Not to say that part 1 is bad, i like both of them.

19. In The Name of God
Love the heavy riff about a minute in, and also returning at the 2 minute mark. Every twist and turn this song takes is great, and at 3:20 the song goes heavier and more awesome too. And that instrumental section.. lol the wankery. It's really great to hear JM's bassline contrasting against that unison by JR and JP played brilliantly. And of course, GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH. I was floored when I heard that in there the first time.

18. The Ytse Jam
This song doesn't get enough love, it's awesome. The main riff is one of the best DT riffs and this is basically DT's answer to YYZ. It's one of the most fun tracks in the DT catalog and everyone has an epic solo, even though they're kind of immature considering what they would accomplish later on. An amzing instrumental.

17. Wait for Sleep
Dat piano riff. It's beautiful in every single way. There's not much more to say about it. I could've included it together with LT, but the song is so strong on its own that I had to keep it that way - so people would understand how much I appreciate it. Kevin Moore is a boss.

Ħ

Nice to see love for WFS.  People kinda forget about it since it's so short.

Jirpo

Good choices, besides ITNOG which should be higher IMO! :)

Mladen

Wait for sleep is kinda high.

Or maybe it isn't, I dunno. It's a great song.

RG93

Ytse Jam at 18?  :o

Glad to see WFS even higher than my placement, 'cause everyone seems to ignore it.

Ugh my writeups suck... but here goes another batch:

16. Under A Glass Moon
Ok. Where to begin with this song. The actual main part is what I care least about, although it's cool. The real sweetness begins with what is arguably DT's best section ever. EVER. That is the instrumental break, with that 11/4 groove going. It's epic to the max. Topping that with JP's best guitar solo, and one of the best guitar solos of all time - then ending it all with one of Kevin's best solos. There are no words for how good that part is - which is like half the song... lol. The verse/chorus main ideas aren't too good though, otherwise this would definitely be the #1 DT song.

15. Space-Dye Vest
Yup. It's the best song on Awake. It's just a really emotional piece, even though I can't relate to the lyrics particularly well. It carries an amazing atmosphere and the samples make it truly wonderful. It's a wonderful piece. Not more I can say about that.

14. Take the Time
Never has DT had so much fun on a single track as on Take the Time. The entire song is epic, the main riff is awesome - Myung's grooves... just amazing. The verse is amazing too, with both JP and JM being insanely groovy... plus JLB puts on one of his best performances on this song. "I THINK IT'S TIME FOR A CHAAANNNNGGEEE". DAT C#. There is NO weak part about this song. The other major highlight is the instrumental break though, particularly JP's magic at about 4.33 but even more so the part at 4:49 (top 5 DT section). Kevin's solos are stunning on this track, and so is JP's ending solo as well. This is the chemistry that the I&W DT had that was so magical.

MasterShakezula

3 more good picks.  I really love UAGM and the Kevvie song, though I don't see it as my fave off of A.  TTT is a fun and very energetic tune, as well, though I guess I'm more a fan of the darker and softer DT stuff.

IdoSC

UAGM and TTT are great picks, I personally disagree with SDV being a top 50 DT song (moreover the best song on Awake). That's just me I guess.

wammabe

Space Dye Vest is one of my favorite songs of all time. I wouldn't know were to put it on a Dream Theater top 10 list though.

SDV and TTT are worthy of that position.  Not sure about UAGM.

Dat instrumental section? Those solos?

Great picks but best song on Awake on #14(SDV is not my favorite from Awake)?

13. Lines in the Sand
This song is just extremely fun and groovy. The main guitar-driven riff is amazing, the keyboard licks... and MP's drumming - that stuff at 4:10 is just  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy. Let us not forget that solo either... that solo is probably JP's second best. Emotional, great licks - I especially like that one at 6:19. John Myung has epic grooves on the track, and so does Petrucci... it's just an amazing song front to back.

12. Eve
When you listen to this song, you just feel at peace with the world. So much emotion, it's wonderful. It's the same feeling that I get from Devin Townsend's Ghost album basically... just pure magic.

11. The Count of Tuscany
The intro. Wow. That is one of the most beautiful DT sections, and that JP intro solo is perfect too - with the harmonics action. The entire intrumental part following the intro is also a testament of DT's techincal wizardry and magic. This song is notorious for being able to swift between different sections with ease, and you think to yourself "how did we end up here". The following heavy verse/chorus action is actually probably the weakest part of the song, though it's also great. When the song finally moves on it goes into that wonderful mellow interlude - with JP laying down some amazing guitar work with harmonics and all that jazz. The following clean strumming is also wonderful, that progression is great and the song ends on a high note for sure. Though it's very long, and the heavy verse/chorus part is just what brings it down. The lyrics don't bother me too much, it doesn't decrease or increase its place on the rankings.

IdoSC

Nice choices. Lines in the sand is such an amazing track, I hope they'll bring it back soon as it didn't appear on BCSL tour.
