jsem, the fact that you have Speak To Me so low and Your Majesty and Afterlife so high indicates that we are not a match.

But this should be an interesting read.  :tup

Time for another update

46. Anna Lee
DT's Elton John song, and it's absolutely lovely. For a while I was obsessed with this song, and I learned to play it on the piano and everything - it's quite the tune harmonically too  :) and it's really fun to play. Derek really has a magic touch.

45. Sacrificed Sons
I don't care too much for the first four minutes or so of the song, but when the heavy part hits at around 4:15. That section is just one of those epic DT sections, and the riff is an excellent solo riff. The latter minutes of the song, the heavier parts of the song are also really great - but as the rest of the 8vm album a lot of sections come off as uninspired to me, it's just my qualm about the entire 8vm album pretty much. And this song also drags a bit too long, clocking in at a bit past 10 minutes.

44. As I Am
Probably the most balls-to-the-walls riff in the DT catalog. It's heavy and it's awesome. And.. DAT SOLO. Seriously, it's one of JP's best solos. My only regret about this song is that there's not that much layering going on and it seems quite empty, and doesn't make the best use of JR.

43. Misunderstood
This tune is a great one. It begins softly and gets heavier and heavier, keeping the same chord progression throughout - which is a great chord progression. I love how JP's guitar in the intro outlines the melody too, it's some great stuff. The song does drag a bit too, and the last minute is just a total  :| for me, I'm not completely sold on the experimental stuff in the end.. but that's just me.

Anna Lee didn't quite make my Top 50, but it's a great song.  Great to see some love for it.

I like it when I disagree with certain song places, it means that the list won't be very predictable.

wasteland

Good lot. Almost everything is about at the same place I'd put them, except for Misunderstood, which is still too high to my tastes...

Great choices, although I'm not a fan of As I Am. It's nice to see Misunderstood and SS though.  :tup

Am I the only one who gets strong Linkin Park vibes from As I Am, I don't even know why.

42. Beyond This Life
I used to hate the main riff in this song. I still do to some extent. I don't like the vibe of it, even though it does fit perfectly in SFAM. But when we get further into the song, the vocal harmonies in the chorus and stuff. Starting at about 3:20 it starts getting epic, with that little bridge - going into the guitar solo riff. That riff is one of the best DT riffs. The solos are brilliant, and the background riffs are excellent too. These moments make up for the so-and-so main riff - and the Zappa section in this song is just insane. It does drag a bit, but hey - the solos in this song make it all worth it.

Btw: Am I the only one who hears a lick inspired by the keyboard vamp in Tom Sawyer played by JP during the solo? It's @ 7:44 to be exact. Or is this common knowledge? Epic JP solo nonetheless.

41. Surrounded
This song is beautiful. And it'd be ranked even higher if it weren't for the cheesy middle part of the song with JP's cheesy guitar crap. The beginning and the ending of the song, is mellow and absolutely beautiful though. Just one of those songs that give I&W its brilliant character.

40. Where Are You Now
This is a truly underrated piece of work by DT. The first riff when the vocal hits is absolutely brilliant, and it's sad that this song didn't make it onto any album. The main feel is amazing, and the small deviations in the song - with the mellow stripped down part in the middle - really make the song. The solo also carries a lot of emotion, and elevates the song to higher ground.

39. Scarred
Well. I don't like Awake too much, and a lot of people are going to rage seeing this song so low. Whatever. The intro is masterful, JMX laying down that funk-jazzy groove. As a matter of fact, the first two minutes or so are actually some of the best DT stuff. The song then takes a heavy turn, which is great to begin with but I do think it drags for a bit too long unfortunately. Even though all sections are awesome, and I love this song - I don't love it more than 38 other songs, that's the way I feel about Awake in general too - I don't know why, it just is that way.

All great picks, especially Surrounded and BTL.  :tup

RG93

Surrounded is indeed top 50 worthy!

I'm OK with Scarred that low, 'cause that means there's room for more awesome songs. ;D

bloop

Surrounded should be higher imo. Great choices though.  :metal

Elite

Surrounded would be waaay higher, as would Scarred. What do you mean you don't like Awake?  :censored

You've got Where Are You Now a lot higher than I would, but it's great to see because it is almost never mentioned.  Cool song.

Yeah, I think it's actually a crime that this song gets no attention. It's very catchy.  :metal

38. The Best of Times
Here's a real emotional song. Once you get the back story and everything about the song, it becomes so much more powerful. And JP's guitar work on this song is absolutely brilliant. It is a bit long though... which drags it down quite a bit. I don't really know what else to say, I love JP on this song.

37. The Great Debate
Talk about a great song. I love the atmosphere on this album, the samples setting the whole thing up. The riffage during the chorus is absolutely masterful. And then we get the orgasmic part... LIFE TO SAVE LIFE... LIFE TO SAVE LIFE. It drags a bit though, goes on for a few more minutes than it should. But the riffage on this album is epic.

36. Voices
I love the entire intro and that 9/4 groove. Sadly, I don't care that much about the rest of the song and it's rather forgettable, except for JP's guitar solo - which is a top 5 solo. The fact that it makes it up to 36 are simply because of the intro and the solo... and that's quite a feat. I'm not saying the rest of the stuff is bad, just rather forgettable - the stuff that happens after the solo is good though.

35. Blind Faith
Well, it's a beautiful tune. I love this side of Dream Theater, you know, the sort of stuff that goes on at about 2 minutes into the song - the layering is just excellent. The song is just a great effort and showcases a lot of DT's strengths and their progressiveness too. I LOVE that riff that pops up at 5:41 too, it's a fantastic riff. The piano break that comes not long after is also just great. Also. DAT UNISON.

Id like to be added to the list? By the time it gets to me ADToE might be released, and I can add those, maybe.

Haha I think LP12 may be released by then!  :-)  More choices for you!

Jirpo

Voices and Blind Faith would be much higher for me! :)

Mladen

Good ones. Blind faith wouldn't find its place in my top 50, though...
