Interesting list so far, very controversial....Take the Time, Overture 1928 and Fatal Tragedy are songs I would never expect to see below Forsaken and TDEN. But each to their own, intrigued as to what your top 10 might be.

i can guess SDV is guysullavin's TOP 3

The list so far hasn't had many positive comments about the songs, just negatives. Ah well... it's interesting so far.

44. Take the Time

Another example of Dream Theater rapping that I don't like, although the keyboard intro is very cool and spectacular. Also with BMS, the guitar sound he's using in this song is a bit less than (which is weird because I've always preferred Petrucci's Ibanez) I kinda like the backup vocals, but the rapping kills it for me.

uhhhh rapping?  Where is there rapping on TTT.  I think you are confused.

I'm guessing he is referring to the part after the intro (Hold it now, wait a minute...)

30. VII About to Crash (reprise)

I -love- the intro to this song, its just one of the nicest things to listen to in my life. The problem is that I'm not a huge fan of James' Singing in this one, despite the excellent lyrics. Kind of upsetting.

29. Afterlife

I think this was the first song I heard on WDADU, love that riff, nice and simple song for the most part. But god that singing kinda ruins it. I like it most on WDADR with LaBrie, he does a much better job at it. The fade out into the key/guitar solo is pretty awesome and frankly I think this is one of Petrucci's better solos. Definitely a song I would never get tired of listening to.

28. Count of Tuscany

You guys take this song weirdly, some of you love it, some hate it, but I guess that goes for everything. I personally think its the best track off BC/SL (not including covers) and I wouldn't be ashamed to call this song another one of DT's epics. The buildup is good, the theme of the song stays fairly consistent, and the lyrics aren't as bad as some of you make them out to be.

27. The Root of All Evil

*bong (echo) wahwahwahwahwah Badadadadum badum badum* Every time I listen to this I forget that intro part, and it kinda freaks me out especially when it jumps to the drum beats. Great opening to a song. oh yeah, and the RIFF definitely helps set the mood, This song just makes me feel EVIL listening to it. "Driven blindly by our sins Misled so easily!" Muahahahah!

Mladen

As some people have said already, I find it interesting how negative your reviews are. It's not a bad thing, it's just a cool change of pace.  :azn:

"I've heard the promises
I've seen the mistakes..."

Personally I don't think anything in Dream Theater is really "rapping" although people always go on about it. But Take The Time has the part that sounds closest to "rapping", much closer than the other parts people call rapping.

LieLowTheWantedMan

About to Crash is beautiful. Not a fan of the reprise though.

If we count Six Degrees as separate songs, AtC would still be in my top 10.

26. Constant Motion

Sweet riffs, quick pace. Suits the songs title very well. Glad to see this song on the RB network aswell, although now that there's keys I should HOPE to see a Dream Theater pack soon. /off topic

25. The Dance of Eternity

I love this song, but like with another song I feel it has the problem that its sort of one of Dream Theaters showoff songs. I've also found I'm getting disinterested with it the more I listen to it.

24. Pull me Under

I was a fan of this song, listened to it way too much. I can see why it was a hit though, its visibly a song thats got some of that more popular sorta feel to it. Also the riff only sounds good when listening to it loudly, just saying.

23. The Mirror

Aaah, who could think the simplest Riff could be so bad-ass? Definitely one of Dream Theaters "What the fuck?" songs. This is the song I show people who I don't like and I know don't like Metal music (I make sure its blasting). This song Reaks of really early Metal, and I couldn't get enough of it if I tried.

I never understood why ppl liked CM.

people don't seem to on this forum. It's better alot of the songs on SC but that's not saying a great deal.

LieLowTheWantedMan

I love CM and tDoE and both were even higher on my list.

Sorry for the random delay, computer Reformat, had to re-install all my DT music. Back to work.
22. Finally Free

I like it as the final chapter of SFAM, but I think it lacks a bit as a lone song. Love that Riff during the 'action scene' though... and the first strings/classical guitar/piano section is something appealing to listen to. Funny, I always liked Petrucci more as a writer, but not for this album, Portnoy does a much better job.

21. Space Dye Vest

Whoever said SDV would be top 3... no... absolutely not... I think its cool and all, but its so not Dream Theater its... meh... Kevin Moore fans can go and do something explicit. Don't get me wrong, I like it, heck its 21, but I want to give this song some stink.

20. These Walls

I only really listened to this song when I first joined this forum and read someones post in this thread. Honestly, the intro to this song is so bad-ass theres no way to put it below 25. Great keys, amazing Vocals, drumming is ok, I approve this song thoroughly.

Sam

Great choices, These Walls is a solid song, I've always loved SDV and Finally Free has some great riffs and melodic ideas. I love the chorus, and the outro has some amazing drumming by MP and great guitar harmonies. I also really like the way it explains a lot more about what actually happened to Victoria, and how she died. And that ending, open your eyes Nicholas...genius.

Anyways, great choices!

bloop

Space Dye Vest. It won't ever be as high than it should be.

robwebster

I really like how lukewarm the write-ups are. "This is my fifth favourite Dream Theater song. The keys need some fucking work, mind."

:lol  :lol I'm waiting for: (announces #1 song) "This song kinda sucks"

I'm guessing the holidays are delaying things, but I wanted to bump this to see if anyone is still paying attention.   ::)

These Walls is an incredible song.  Definitely would make my top 20.  And...drumming is ok???  WHAT?  I use this song and LitS to show people how technically and dynamically power Mike is.

it doesn't stand out like in other songs so I dont generally think of it. Maybe its a mixing problem with the song, but theres other songs that have much more drum superiority.

19. Endless Sacrifice
Nice Dark tune that incorporates most of DT's ability, the intro has a nice dark swing to it. Then just as you're getting relaxed into it it kicks yo in the gut and gets moving. Despite ToT being alot darker than other albums, this song has some of the best keys I've heard from Rudess.

18. Blind Faith
I really do like this song, its very interesting, but the part that kills me about it is the Vocals when LaBrie sings it live in CiM. That had to be one of the worst performances by LaBrie ever. Other than that, the intro is pretty cool, and the lyrics have a nice poetic feeling to them.

17. Panic Attack
The Bass/Guitar Synchronization at the beginning is epic. This is a DT song thats show-offy that i dont mind that it is. The Rhythum and speed the song has is more energizing than CM. Drums are Epic, Guitar is Epic, Bass is epic, the only complaint i could have of it is not knowing a Basist with a 6-string or the ability to keep up.
