:lol Just doesn't do anything for me. Everybody on here put it on a pedestal, and when I finally heard it I was extremely disappointed. I would much rather listen to *almost* every other song in DT's catalogue.

46. This Dying Soul

Its a bit too forward for me, its like its going in reverse climatic order to end with a big explosion of "holy hell Petrucci is going to melt our faces with solo". I've really only found the part I like is the "Hello mirror" part because its a nostalgia bomb on its own. I'm also pretty back and forth with rapping in DT songs, I like it for some songs, this isn't one of them.

45. Burning My Soul

Hey look, 2 souls together! What a coincidence. I've been very on the fence with this song, I like its lyrics, and I like the riff. But how they did it all is what I don't like. the guitar sound Petrucci uses for this song is meh. The effect on the BG vocal for "Burnang mah Sauul" is distracting and kind of ugly. I do like how Portnoy steps it up a bit in this song, good drums. and Where the hell is sherinian for the entire song minus the solo? For sherinian being my favorite keyboardist, he's not very pronounced in this song.

44. Take the Time

Another example of Dream Theater rapping that I don't like, although the keyboard intro is very cool and spectacular. Also with BMS, the guitar sound he's using in this song is a bit less than (which is weird because I've always preferred Petrucci's Ibanez) I kinda like the backup vocals, but the rapping kills it for me.

43. A Nightmare to Remember

I get it, spooky night, creepy chords oooOOoooh!... not my cup of tea. the intro sounds like something off A7X's album nightmare. I do like the part after the chords where it gets into that growly guitar (around 1:42ish) its got a good static feeling, but soon to be interrupted by less-than lyrics (sorry Petrucci). I've found the only thing i can really enjoy from this song is the guitar and drums up until the flowey part (3:18ish). listening to it over, now that I think of it, it sounds very "Avenged Sevenfold" aside from the length, it is also too long for what is.

Kosmo

I love how your little reviews of the songs are so negative.

Interesting list so far.

Just for some perspective - does anyone know how many songs there actually are? I'm assuming somewhere in the area of 150 once you include the demos and b-sides and more if you include live versions?

:lol  Why are these songs making your top 50 when you dislike them so much?  :lol

I can't believe nobody called me out for not having A Change of Seasons in my top 50.  :lol

I didn't really notice...

WTF MAN??
Me neither!  :omg:

Yeah, the previous listmakers have written positively about almost every song!  :lol But I'm not saying it's a bad thing.

What?  Just a funny observation.
Actually, I'm just looking at it from a pessimistic view. I can guarantee that I'd listen to Dream Theater songs over almost any other artist, I'm just drilling at them.

42. Overture 1928

Ugh, this is a toughie... because there isn't really anything wrong with the song, I'm just not a huge fan of it...  maybe TDOE is just better so there's no reason to listen to this song in comparison? I dunno...

41. Only a Matter of Time

The intro is weird, it sets up this mood for the specific song, but then changes the mood about a minute in. Its almost like the intro wasn't necessary. The entire song is very ADHD (not meant to be offensive to those with ADHD, just stabbing for a metaphor), switching topics back and forth. which is alright, but unfortunately there's some key sections that I don't like in it which spoil it.

40. Caught in a Web

I really despise the sound they use for the keys in this song, other than that its pretty good otherwise. Not much else I can say else from that(what a lazy bastard).

39. The Shattered Fortress

Now, I'm a big fan of the 12 step suite (including the unofficial member "the Mirror"), but this is my second least favorite from the set (regression didn't make it). But I think although it works, it feels like its missing something. The solo is great, like it, but its like its trying to be another Glass Prison, which it just isn't. Portnoy said himself, "it became like an obligation hanging over my head, like a homework assignment" well, it shows.

I approve of including CIAW in the top 50 list. I don't have any problems with the keyboard patches, though.

Yes, urrite, always get those mixed up.

38. IV. The Test That Stumped Them All

That's right, I'm grading 6doit individually, live with it.

Schizophrenia, what an awesome topic, and I really do like the song. The Riffs are dark and evil, the licks are quick and confusing, works perfectly with the topic. Not a big fan of the high pitched responses, but other than that, its pretty good.

37. Rite of Passage

This was one of my first favorites of DT. Love the dark themes, the riff is so metal (wraaagh!), and you can tell Portnoy is having fun with the caveman beats during the main Chugga Chugga bit. Only complaint is that I dont really hear Rudess much in the song. except when he's copying the main riff, which is depressing to say the least.

36. Just Let Me Breath

I love the pace of this song, it feels as if it never stops, just keep movin' sorta stuff. I feel that this would be a good driving song, its got that sort of flavor to it. Definitely one of my favorites off FII. Why cant DT make more stuff like this?

35. III. The War Inside My Head

Listening to this song, I can actually imagine a Vietnam\Bay of Pigs war montage with lots of suffering and stuff. Which is cool when I'm feeling dramatic, but it makes normal listening to it hard for me (unless I'm playing Call of duty, then it just motivates me).

Uninteresting so far... Sorry, man... :-\
I disagree.

guysullavin, do you have all the albums?
I think so, I don't have the bootlegs nor do i have any bonus disks except the BC/SL triple disk (did they do a 2-disc only BC/SL? I feel the 3rd disk was a waste of money)

Ħ

Ok I just wanted to see since you've put some very interesting songs up so far.  I wanted to see if it was cause you didn't have all the songs and that's why you picked certain ones above others you hadn't heard.

On the contrary, I find this list very interesting, mainly because most of these songs would not be on my list at all.  :lol

34. Wither

I had a Wither faze at one point, I like it, but like the entire BC/SL album, I overplayed it too much. Its a good song for a slower one, but it doesn't suit Dream Theater in my opinion. So, its a cool song, don't do it again Dream Theater, Don't do it again...

33. In the Presence of Enemies Pt1.

Ugh... this song has way too many different parts to it. There are some parts of it I like, and some I dont... its sorta of one of those songs that people listen to and say "its just Them jacking off" and its true, it is. The thing that makes this song enjoyable is every time I listen to it I think of the trio playing ITPOE on Classical guitar (look it up on youtube, its amazing).

32. The Dark Eternal Night

I really liked this song when I started listening to Dream Theater, and I like it, its one of the things that convinced me to get a 7-string guitar (still haven't learned it, damn procrastination). I'm just not a huge fan of the Rapping and feel as if they drag it on way too long (especially at the breakdown @ the end).

31. Forsaken

I can't really dis this song because its one of my favorite songs to play on real guitar, its kinda lame lyrics wise and its not really extravagant in any way (especially if I can play it). Its got its own flavor to it, just like wither, this song doesn't feel Dream Theaterey. Cool Story though... bro...

You've had something negative to say about every song so far, except for Forsaken.  Um, what?

No.

Sam

Interesting list so far, very controversial....Take the Time, Overture 1928 and Fatal Tragedy are songs I would never expect to see below Forsaken and TDEN. But each to their own, intrigued as to what your top 10 might be.

Is it too late for me to get in line to make a list?

Depends upon how old you are.  If you're under thirty, you should make it in time.
