10. Metropolis Pt.1 The Miracle and the Sleeper
Pretty much Dream Theater wrapped up into one song. Melodic, heavy, proggy, sexy, and above all, kick-ass. I love the intro, just creates so much vibe and feel that continues throughout the song. Another Dream Theater song that doesn't have a lot of parts that stick out to me, but the ones that do really make an impact when you hear them. Perfect lyrics, a fantastic introduction to Scenes From A Memory, but better than any part from Pt.2 by a long shot. And that bass solo!  :heart I'm so pumped that I got to see Myung take center stage and pull that off without even blinking, definitely one of the highlights of that concert. Everything about this song is great, and a perfect place to kick off the top 10.

9. In The Presence of Enemies
What a great song. In-your-face, great groove, excellent riffage by the whole band, and pretty decent lyrics, probably the best from Systematic Chaos. This song is a ton of fun to play, and just as much fun to listen to. I love the whole first part, everything about it is flawless, and the solo after "redemption for humanity" fits perfectly. The second part is a bit of a sleeper for the first little bit, but it still contains some awesome stuff that shouldn't be glossed over. The last half of part two is one of many reasons Dream Theater is so good; it has sections that are easy on the ears and beautiful, and other parts that are really "metal" and are fun to rock to. The ending of the song is fantastic, one of the many phenomenal outro's that Dream Theater have written.

8. Blind Faith
Initially upon joining DTF, and stupidly, I just assumed this song wasn't one that was liked by mostly all Dream Theater fans, was I wrong. It took a while for this song to grow on me, but now that it has it is absolutely fantastic. Everything about this tune is amazing, especially John's bass work and the solo's by John and Jordan. DT fans are "spoiled beyond our wildest dreams" to have songs like this that don't often get consideration for somebody's top song, and maybe even their top 10. Some of Jordan's keyboard work slightly reminds me of Kevin from Images and Words, yet he brings the "Jordan" element to it with his awesome soloing. One thing I don't like is Mike or John, maybe both, saying "invisible" etc. during the chorus. But the riff at 4:32 is nothing short of wonderful, especially with James singing overtop. Great song.

 blind faith. was listening in the car earlier. love it!

I think those three all vary by about 5 spots or less from your list to my list  :tup In fact I'm sure one is in the exact same spot it is on mine. Awesome picks.

The different opinions are what make these lists interesting. It would be pretty boring if everybody had the exact same top 50.

CrimsonE

Well, I've got my list ready to go when the time comes, and it was a LOT harder than I thought it would be, because every time I'd go back to the DT songs that I thought I'd leave off the list, I struggled with the decisions.   In fact, I might still change # 50 because I'm not entirely happy with that song, but I haven't been able to bring myself to put another song ahead of it.  And when I re-listened to many of the tunes to do the write-up, I had second thoughts about positioning.  In fact, I'd say the only two songs that stayed the same throughout the list were 1 and 2.

Anyway, I'm pretty much ready, and if the three people between me and Jarlaxle are not yet ready to post theirs, I can do it if they don't mind a list jump.  If not, then that's fine too, as I'm looking forward to seeing some of the upcoming lists.

Finally, suffice it to say that if people have problems with song placement for Jarlaxle's list, they're really gonna go nuts on a few of my top 10 choices (as well as a few of my exclusions).

I wouldn't mind, CrimsonE.  I'm a patient guy, that would be okay with me.

Sorry, bad timing to be doing my own top 50. I'll just finish it off right now, no write-ups since I don't have the time.

These Walls is awesome, but I'm not sure it's top 4 material. :lol

These Walls is the second best song off Octavarium, and the third best since Octavarium.  Well done.

jcmistat

Oi!, I be here, I've just been procrastinating.

50. The Spirit Carries On

Eh, its alright I guess, but the intro is a bit slow and I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics at all. I'm pretty sure this is my least favorite song on SFAM. I do like it though when the guitar kicks in, it gives alot more character to the song. The guitar solo is actually one of my favorite guitar solos by Petrucci, but sadly I feel that the rest of the song is much worse than the solo. Its also something I can't listen to without the rest of SFAM

49. Prophets of War

I feel that this song had alot of potential, but they never got past that stage with it. Its got a great Riff, good intro, but it somehow falls flat on its face. I feel that it never leaves the intro feel throughout the entire song. I will give it credit that somehow it always gets stuck in my head :-\

48. Fatal Tragedy

Like tSCO, I feel that I can't like this song without the rest of SFAM. Its almost like they're trying to spill out the story too quick for the pace of the song, and the only break you get is during the random instrumental intervals (instrumentevals?) which are Ok at best and sometimes dont really pertain to the rest of the songs feeling.

47. The Best Of Times

I dont get everyone's love for this song (or is it just the solo?) Frankly, I'm unimpressed with this song in its entirety. The Intro is really much too long, and when the intro finishes it goes into this Petrucci wank-off of speed. Why? its so out of place and doesn't really fit with the song at all. I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics, I know what the story about it is, I just don't feel any sympathy from the way he wrote this song, not like i did when I had heard ACOS.

Apart from Fatal Tragedy all those songs would probably be about there for me - either just inside or just outside the top 50. Don't really have much preference between them. Fatal Tragedy would be considerably higher though.

TSCO below POW? Uhhhhhh......
Yeah, all of those are too low, with the exception of POW, which is way too high.

I feel that this new list will be really controversial.  ;D

I can't believe nobody called me out for not having A Change of Seasons in my top 50.  :lol
