ofc it's random, it's DT! but random lyrics doesn't count though

BUT! LTL is so heard to memorize for me

zxlkho

8VM may or may not make my top 30. Depends on my mood.

Randomness is randomness man.

And I don't see why "memorizing" a song is important unless you're trying to play it yourself.

BRGM

You're right...but LTL still haven't clicked for me all the way through! It's not a bad song by any means...but pretty mediocre for me

Middle section jam, F#, DAT SOLO, Keyboard Solo, Bass Solo, Fade Out, none of that clicks?

zxlkho

The f# is the most brilliant moment in music I've ever heard. Completely srs.

Petrucci's solo is superior

Disagree. Though it's still absolutely amazing.
The man damn near makes his guitar cry, its  just breathtaking. The F# is still amazing though, but I always pay attention to the solo more. Every single second from that point is pure perfection.

LieLowTheWantedMan

I memorized LtL after a few listens. But thats the case with me. I get songs down fast...

Of course, I'll never memorize any post-rock or krautrock songs...

Here's the beginning of my top 50, and I know I will get some criticism from this list but here goes nothing:

50. The Glass Prison
Now, this is probably the earliest case of controversy in this thread so take it easy on me. The beginning of this song is awesome with the static and bass intro, but after the first riff this song goes downhill fast. There's just too much going on in this song as it is just non-stop in your face. To me this is the beginning of Dream Theater's "wankery" that is criticised so often in their recent releases. Don't get me wrong, I love all Dream Theater songs (for the most part), but I love some less than others, and this is one of them.

49. The Best of Times
Upon my first listen and before I knew that this song was about Mike's dad I felt like this was a song that would be played at a funeral. The intro is so beautiful, and then the guitar kicks in and switches the tempo in a complete 180. "But then came the call" and turns this song from okay to pretty good. The instrumental section is beautiful and really fits with the intro. The lyrics aren't the best, but I will give Mike credit for what he had to work with. Good song.

48. A Rite of Passage
This song is really catchy. There is something, I'm not sure what is, but it is holding me back from ranking this song higher. Maybe it's Mike's backing vocals, or maybe it is the solo trade-offs between John and Jordan. But the vibe is awesome, the lyrics are cool and the chorus is fantastic.

47. Erotomania
I always get the feeling that Derek wrote the intro to this song as it sounds quite similar to some of the keyboard parts on Falling Into Infinity. But the guitar on this song is really cool, it just gets a little repetetive after awhile. If this song had been incorporated into another song as a solo section it would have made that song much better in the long run.

46. A Nightmare To Remember
If this song had been wrapped up after the second "in peaceful sedation" part this song would be ranked probably 40 spots higher, but alas Dream Theater decided to get creative with their excessive soloing and wrecked this song for me. When I first bought Black Clouds and Silver Linings I basically ran to my car to pop the CD in my car and pounf my new peice of joy. Needless to say i was blown away by the sheer awesomeness of the creepy and haunting intro with the thunder and piano. Then the song kicked into high gear and absolutely kicked my ass. I was almost in tears it was so awesome. Then the soft part kicks in, and I have to say that that whole section is some of Dream Theater's greatest peices of music. I love the first half of this song, Jame's voice is awesome and the tone of the guitar is awesome.  :heart. too bad it had to be spoiled by too much solo.

That's what makes this song awesome!  Your placement is a bit too low for me, but generally accurate.

49. The Best of Times

I agree with your description, and this is pretty much where I'd put it.

48. A Rite of Passage

No no no no no.  No.

47. Erotomania

Way too low.

46. A Nightmare To Remember

The best part of the album is the one you described.  I pretty much agree with your assessment, but the good parts of this song greatly overwhelm the meh parts.  I'd put it around 25.

Jarlaxle

Ranking these songs is so much harder than say the top 10 or even 20. I was able to quickly list those songs, but when you get to 30 and up I found I was really running into some great songs and didn't want to leave them out. Lots of these songs could very well be in the top 25 if they had just been tinkered with. Everything from about 25-50 is so evenly matched it is too difficult to accurately order them and feel like you are giving them all justice.

AwakeFromOctavarium

Finally someone ranked TGP low enough. But Erotomania is WAY too low imo.

Mladen

Some of those are way lower than I'd place them. AROP wouldn't make my list...

hefdaddy42

I would have ranked The Glass Prison and Erotomania higher, and wouldn't have ranked A Nightmare To Remember or A Rite Of Passage in my Top 50.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

RoeDent

I love it when people rate songs that most think are great, (within their top 10, for example), lower than usual.

Smash the system!

Fail list is fail.

Oh well, continue on.

Dream Team

Pretty much agree with your assessment of TGP, why that song never gets criticized for "wank" I'll never know.

As far as LTL goes (from the previous list's omission), it's one of my favorite DT songs but I definitely agree it gets much better halfway through.

This. It's only the third best song on its album.

EDIT: This is the 2nd time I've hit the 4000 post mark

Jarlaxle

Personally I think it is the worst on that album, there is too much good stuff there.

DAT RIFF means nothing to you?

I said that after that riff the song goes downhill. One riff doesn't make a song.

You're talking to someone who loves Thrash and Doom metal, which often use only a small handful of riffs so that doesn't mean it can't

The song is still really cool though, and its rare for DT to do a Thrash-inspired song like that. I dunno, I can't really think of another song in their catalog that is like The Glass Prison.

Jarlaxle

Yeah it's quite unique, but like I said I think it has led to their recent trend of soloing to no extent.

Oh I agree and the later half of DT's catalog is far weaker than the first half but I still really enjoy The Glass Prison a lot.

Jarlaxle

Yeah, Images and Words and Awake are a completely different beast than Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds. Both are good in their own right though.
