I love all of ITPoE, it is just up-tempo for the most part, and the ending of both parts are absolutely wonderful.

Heretic is the only section in the song I can listen to. Every other part is garbage and kills what could have been a pretty good song.
Heretic is beautiful. I'd've liked them to have stripped ItPoE across the album, a little more, and have Heretic stand on its own as "ItPoE pt. 2" somewhere either side of Repentance. The Slaughter of the Damned is wonderful, too.

The only bit I genuinely don't like in ItPoE is The Reckoning. Prelude and Resurrection are two of the best things they've done. Heretic is unique, and while occasionally corny it builds up a really fantastic atmosphere. The Slaughter of the Damned is one of the most tantalisingly short rockers this side of War Inside My Head. I dig the finale a lot, too. Lovely way to end the album.

The Reckoning's the most forgettable instrumental section they've done, though. There's nothing I really cling to, in it. And it goes on for a fair while. It's a shame, after Full Circle was so magnificent in Octavarium, which was very similarly structured.

Exorcise "Daaaark maaaaaster within" and revamp the Reckoning so it's more stylistically similar to the first half of the song (which is really quite wildly different, tonally - would be nice to have the halves match a little more closely), and ItPoE would be on about the same level as The Count of Tuscany. Not quite up there with Octavarium or ACoS, but there's no shame in being strong and long. Or that's what she said, anyway. Colon-hat.

Seventh Son

Eh, opinions. There's nothing worthwhile in Part 2 after Heretic as far as I'm concerned.

BRGM

I love pt.2 I love entire ITPOE, for me it's their second best song after octavarium, the count might beat it as well

14. Pull Me Under
DT's biggest hit, and personally I think its well deserved. This was the first DT song I ever heard. The first time I heard it I loved it. The catchy heavy riff's, groovy keys, and an awesome solo. Straight away after I heard this song, I checked them out on Wikipedia, the funny thing is after I saw a picture of them for some reason I assumed Jordan to be the singer :rollin. I love the build up and then the explosion of the heavy riff at the start. The love the pre chorus stuff too, the heavy riffin and the lil solo. I never get bored of this song. But I never understand why my version of it cuts off suddenly.

13. Scarred

I think we all know that this is a love it or hate it song, obviously for me, fortunately I love it, and I feel sorry for the people that don't :p But I do understand as it did take me a while to get into it properly. But man was it worth it. My second favourite from awake, I'd definitely call it the epic of awake though. I love the jazzy intro and JP's solo during it. The riff with the keys on top is epic, so cool and heavy at the same time. I love the way the song starts building up and up after it as well. The chorus again is one of my favourite DT chorus's; the lyrics are so cool and James's voice is amazing. The backing vocals fit perfectly to. The outro is just amazing. Lovely guitar work from JP.

Excellent picks. Good to see some love for PMU since most people give it the cold shoulder for some reason.

Every Version does, I think the story as that they couldn't think of an ending for it or something.

Howdy:

Can I get in on the list?  I've got a semi-controversial batch of 50 or so, although I'll have to complete my write-ups for each one.   Just put me at the bottom of the list and let me know when I'm up.

Jarlaxle

The list is in the OP, then when hefdaddy sees your request he'll update the list.

moffatt

Sorry for late update but won't be able to do it today either, been halfway across the country so won't be done till tommorrow night.

Yay for PMU!  But imo, both those are a little too high (although both great songs).

Occasional_Madman

Good stuff! Scarred just clicked for me about 2 weeks ago. Aside from the bass in the intro, I couldn't get into it. But now I love it. Especially the "What if the rest of the world..." part.

12. The Ministry of Lost Souls
Ok firstly this is one of the coolest names for a song ever. A lot of people don't like this song and think it drags on, but I disagree. The best way to describe this song is an emotional rollercoaster. The lyrics are brilliant, the whole story although short, is really well put. The chorus is great too. This is my favourite song off SC btw, and is one of the reasons I will never understand the hate for it. The highlight of this song and the album is the whole instrumental section. I love the transition from James's last chorus to that chugging riff that starts it all off. Over 4 minutes of musical bliss. Its just so fantastic, the way the riffs build up, MP's absolutely amazing drumming, JP's amazing solo, JR's cool keyboard leads, the epic unison, everything about this section is amazing. And after it, a cool breakdown then another great chorus followed by an outro containing more brilliant guitar work from JP.

11. Trial of Tears
I only have 2 songs from FII on my list. This one being my favourite from it all I can say is, why aren't the other songs as bloody amazing as this is? This song really stands out for me as there is no other DT song that is anything like it. We've had 2 people in this thread put this song at #1, which I think is very deserving. The bass is so godamn awesome on this song. The whole intro is brilliant, and the way the riff builds up and then just comes all at you. And of course "Its raining" part is just so epic. JP solo's is great too, but what really makes this song so amazing for me is the second keyboard solo. This is one of my favourite keyboard solo's of all time, easily Derek's best work in DT. The way the band just gets heavier and heavier in the background makes it even more amazing. Such fantastic work all in one song.

Props to putting such a unique and controversial song so high.  Even though I don't really "get" TMoLS, I totally respect it, especially the emotional aspect.  Love the "I was the one who would not abandon you" section.

And yay to see ToT so high!  It definitely commends a lot of our respect.  The only thing that bothers me is how the ambient "Deep in Heaven" section is ripped from a different band (I forget which).

Occasional_Madman

Two more brilliant choices. Both of which are jam packed with emotion and would be just as high up on my list.

inb4 PLM rages that ToT isn't #1.

At least it's top 20. Anything below that is rageworthy

Always amazing to see TMOLS and knowing I'm not the only one who would rank it high.

Again sorry for the late update.

10. The Mirror

So we enter the top 10 with a song probably a lot of you don't have in your top 10. This is just so simple but so amazing at the same time. Shortest song that makes the top 10. The main riff is just so :metal :metal :metal Lyrics are just great and the verses are so epic. James's dark voice is brilliant and man does he shine on the chorus. Portnoys drumming is quality, its quite simple compared to most other DT songs, but it just fits the song perfectly. The outro is great to, the transition is so well done. You got JM's groovy bass, JP's cool guitar work and the standard KM keys. Such a great song.

9. The Glass Prison
This song is why DT's metal side is so good. The whole intro is so fucking insane. The whole build up and then the explosion, then that riff starts to build up then we have one of DT's best riff's. What more could you want, oh look an epic solo by JP that will do just fine. Then we burst straight into another great riff. As I have said earlier, I love MP's backing vocals, and they are great in this so as well. Especially in Restoration which I think is the highlight of the song. The transition is pulled off brilliantly and oh big surprise we get a ton of epic riffs. MP's aggressive vocals are great here, the best riff is the one inbetween the vocal sections with the crowd chant, fucking epic. Of course the instrumental section is brilliant to, with JP's godmode guitar work. Would kill to see this song live, and hope they introduce it back into the setlist, although what they would do with MP's vocal parts would be interesting.

LieLowTheWantedMan

One of my favourite things about TGP is the end. Unlike most DT songs with an instrumental section leading to the outro, it has LaBrie sing some memorable verses and then *SMAAAASH* song over.
