I do not approve of TTT and Caught in a Web that low, but others are fine.

Mladen

Interesting list so far, although some of the songs are WAY too low in my opinion...

LieLowTheWantedMan

40. This Dying Soul
This one seems to have a lot of Megadeth influence. Anyways, this song is really fun to listen to with it's lightspeed solos and constant heavyness. One of the bands heaviest songs, it's quite a ride.
39. Hollow Years
Maybe it was the Live at Budokan version that got me to like this song. It was my favourite live performance ever. Unfortunately this is studio only. Still, the vocals are beautiful, the melodies are memorable, and overall is just a nice song to listen to.
38. Overture 1928
A little short, but oh so sweet. This is a really nice way to open the SFaM album with the first true song. As I said in one of my replies to comments, I prefer listening to SFaM as a whole, and this is individual tracks. If I were talking about the album as a whole, the SFaM tracks would be quite a bit higher.
37. Pull Me Under
Here's the band's radio hit. And it is indeed a great song. The clean guitar passages are great, the riffs are also amazing, and really this is just a stellar song.
36. The Great Debate
Tool + Megadeth = This fine song. This one is just all around fun to listen to. Keeping at a constant speed and never letting go is all this song is. And it's quite a thrill.

TDS=Megadeth? lolno.
Sorry, I worded that wrong. Not TDS getting Megadeth influence, but JLB sounds a lot like Mustaine at parts.

Out of nowhere? If you wanted to go, you could have said something when I gave warning.

Don't take it the wrong way; I thought that since this thread is big and will keep expanding, it's good to have an order as to who's doing it so it doesn't get all ridiculous.

Hence why I asked permission ahead of time. If I hadn't I might have been pushed aside because no one knew who was going next

35. The Best Of Times
If the louder part in the middle wasn't here, this song would be higher. I found it didn't fit the rest and LaBrie was weak in the chorus. However, the intro is absolutely stunning, and the quieter vocal part and ending guitar solo are just beautiful. Those parts spare it a spot on this list.
34. A Nightmare To Remember
The intro scared me at first as I thought DT had turned doom metal. Luckily, that wasn't the case. This song has great drumming, nice heavy sections, and the "hopelessly drifting" part is just beautiful and one of my favourite parts of that whole album.
33. Beyond This Life
This one's an absolute shredfest. It features a great yet oh so simple riff and a crazy instrumental section. The quiet "all that we learned this time" sections are beautiful. The instrumental section runs a little long, but overall this ones a definite winner.
32. The Root Of All Evil
The shortest song in the AA suite. This song sure opens Octavarium with a bang. The main riff is also great. I also love the outro, as it plays my favourite melody of all time (the main theme of Octavarium).
31. Strange Deja Vu
Here's where SFaM really picks up. This is overall a pretty simple song, but it is just so great. It features some great riffs, and great vocal melodies from LaBrie. He even sings in falsetto in one part to make a voice for Victoria. Great song.

I'm going to go ahead and pick Octavarium for spot number 1 :P
Good choices so far though :tup

I added your name to the list in the OP.  That, combined with the changing of the thread title whenever the next person starts, should be enough.  Think so?

I wouldn't mind going after PLM, mind putting my name down?

I do think so.

And my apologies to the confusion I've caused.  :blush
I can expect the next 5 to cause controversy for some unusually high ratings:

30. Endless Sacrifice
I am in love with the chorus of this song. I don't know why, but it amazes me. The instrumental section is amazing. The Dark Eternal Night's instrumental section is similar to this one, but it's much better done in this song. Second best song in Train Of Thought.
29. Surrounded
I wonder how people are gonna react to this. Truth is, I absolutely adore this song. Yes, it is very Rush-influenced, but I absolutely love it. Every second of the song after the small guitar solo after the quiet part is absolutely stunning.
28. The Silent Man
Here's another controversial one. Personally, I think this song is absolutely beautiful, although very short. LaBrie is at his best. I really like the acoustic riff. The lyrics are just brilliant. I find the acoustic mini-solo fits very well. Everything about this song is just great.
27. Repentance
The ballad of the AA suite. It took me a long time to like this song, but once it clicked, it was an amazing song. Petrucci gets a great solo, and unlike most I love the voices section. I also love the repetition of the This Dying Soul riff, only lower. Great ballad.
26. Disappear
Does anyone else love this song? I think it's the most emotional song the band has ever written (besides A Change Of Seasons). I never knew the band could make such a sad song before I heard this. The section starting with "So I'm moving on" is absolutely heart-wrenching. What a song...

Mladen

Kudos for Repentance and Disappear being this high.  :)

I actually ended up not having Disappear in my top 50 by mistake. I approve of your placement of it!

skydivingninja

Toro, I wasn't following your list much, but I approve of your number 1 spot.

LieLowTheWantedMan: Maybe you should lie low.  Having TTT that low on any list is a capital offense.

LieLowTheWantedMan

25. Home
It's not all the time you here a song with such a foreign feel to it. I always thought it was a nice touch. The solo in this song is a goody, too. The sitar effects are very well used, especially when building up the intro. The heaviest song on SFaM, and it's a great one.
24. 6:00
The drum beat in this song is absolutely addictive. The chorus is quite memorable, and James sounds fantastic. Really, everything here is just great. An amazing opener to (imo) the bands 2nd best album!
23. Erotomania
The opener of the "A Mind Beside Itself Suite," it begans pretty quickly with the main riff in an odd time signature. Petrucci is just amazing in this song, and his solo is incredibly difficult. I also love the piano and guitar playing the chorus of The Silent Man part way into the song. One of the bands best instrumentals.
22. Misunderstood
Here's a very underrated song. I love the lyrics here, and overall this song is just beautiful. The acoustic in the opening is heavenly, and the chorus is one of my all-time favourites. The only flaw with this song is the very out of place guitar solo and outro.
21. The Spirit Carries On
I'll admit, I sorta chuckled the first time I heard the beginning of this song because of LaBrie delivering some very Waters-style vocals.  :lol But really, it sounds great. The solo in this song is amazing and I love how it changes from a Gilmour-like solo into an absolute shredding spree near the end. And to top it all off, they have female vocals as well. Very Floydian song, and it's magnificent.

I love your mix of old and new DT. I disagree about Misunderstood being underrated because a lot of people love it, just not the outro. I personally was overjoyed when I heard them play it live during PN08 cause it was one of the first songs that hooked me into DT aside from The Glass Prison.

20. The Count Of Tuscany
Yes, the song has bad lyrics, I'll admit that. But overall, it's quite the fun track. It features some of the bands best riffs, and the intro is amazing. The quiet section in the middle is beautiful (although some consider it filler) and the ending solo works as a great outro. A great closer to BCaSL.
19. Constant Motion
I'm sure I'm gonna get yelled at for placing this song so high. While it does sound thrashy, I think that, just like Count, it features some of the bands best riffs. The chorus is also one of the bands best, and the guitar solo is quite good. It's funny that I consider the guitar solo in this song to be one of Portnoy's best drum moments.  ;)
18. Learning To Live
Now those who saw my comments in some survivor threads probably expected my placing of this to be low. Yes, I did place it low among the bands closers. But trust me, you will see a lot of closing songs in the top 20. The band really knows how to close an album. Anyways, about the song: the best part is definitely LaBrie's famous F# which brings the song to an amazing climax. The entire instrumental section is amazing really. The verses are also great but of course don't measure up to the instrumental section. Great song.
17. Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper
Of course this has to be on the list. Maybe not as high as some would put it, but I think this is a good spot. For a song thats under 10 minutes, this sure carries an epic feel to it. The verses and lyrics are amazing, and the instrumental section is just brilliant on every instrument. A true classic.
16. Space Dye Vest
Superb...marvellous... this song is just beautiful. LaBrie sounds amazing, and the piano is also great. It almost makes me miss Kevin Moore. The lyrics are pretty different for the band, but are great nonetheless. The voices in the song are also effective.

Silver Tears

AwakeFromOctavarium

Interesting to see Contant Motion THIS high. Nothing against it, though. Used to be my favorite during my early DT days.

LieLowTheWantedMan

15. The Dance Of Eternity
This is one crazy song. Myung has an absolutely insane bass solo, and there are 104 time signature changes. I couldn't imagine a full band playing this and keeping it all together. Anyways, I love insanity, and this song is no different. Chaotic, but great.
14. Trial Of Tears
I always thought this song was pretty different for DT. It's one amazing song though. Some sections are the bands most beautiful, and overall it's an absolutely brilliant song.
13. Sacrificed Sons
Most of the reason I love this song is the instrumental section. Such a great contrast to the rest of the song. This song has always reminded me of Porcupine Tree's "Russia On Ice." Beautiful quiet sections, with a louder chorus, and a heavy instrumental section. Great song.
12. In The Name Of God
Absolute riffage in this song. The instrumental section is absolutely mind-boggling on guitar. But I find it's still nice to listen to with the catchy bass and the gradually intensifying drums. It's DT doing what they do best.
11. The Glass Prison
Here was our introduction to the new DT. And boy was it amazing. The drumming is intense. LaBrie sounds amazing. We had the nice touch of Portnoy's dark vocals. And the way it ends so instantly with glass shattering really leaves a lasting effect. Just amazing...

I'd almost wanna do this but I could probably only do a Top 20-25 and would prefer to have a dedicated thread.
