1970s Cringy but Catchy Tunes
« on: April 04, 2024, 11:55:07 AM »
The more obscure the better.  I've been falling down a rabbit hole of sorts for the past few weeks and have been enjoying tunes I haven't heard in years.  Some of them are just awful but yet etched in my brain because at our house, we always had music playing - often just AM radio.

I'd prefer if we didn't just post lists.  Add a gem, here or there.  Any genre is fine.  Let's have some fun!  Maybe there will be a few tunes the whipper snappers haven't heard before.  And if any selection brings up a particular memory, please share!

1977 one hit wonder

Jeans On by David Dundass

It began as a commercial jingle and became so popular that it was expanded into a full length single that went to 17 on the Top 40.

The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature (1970)

One of my favorite tunes of all time, ever.  LOVE that song (and wish Burton Cummings did more; really like that guy's voice).

Mine:
Leo Sayer - More Than I Can Say

When I was a kid, I had a fair amount of problems sleeping. I was on the top bunk and I had a window over my head, so I would lie there in the dark, looking out the window, and listening to a local AM station - WICC out of Bridgeport - through one of those old one-ear headphones.   They played the top 40 hits of the day and some of those songs are my favorites to this day.  I have to recreate it, but for the longest time I had a playlist on my iPod of a lot of those songs.

This was my radio ($45 on eBay now! Can you believe it?!?):

LoL - that radio is the epitome of Bicentennial marketing.  Way cool.  Like that Leo Sayer cut too.

Jammin, I vaguely remember that song.

Love love love Drift Away - had forgotten about that gem.

How about Gordon Lightfoot (a question on Jeopardy last night - NOBODY got it, sheesh)?  Sundown (1974). Some pretty guitar work here.

YES!!!!!  One of two Gord songs on my playlist (the other is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald).  "Sundown" has a great, sort of under-the-radar dark lyric that I love.

I think the comment section is more of a cringe-fest than the song, to be honest! Boomers gonna boomer.

An underrated classic of yacht rock. Literally talking about getting on a boat and sailing to Rio! The musicianship is undeniable.

TAC - Wildfire made me cry like a little girl.  I had totally forgotten about that song.

All of these songs are ah-may-zing and I'm starting a playlist.  Epic - is Sugar Sugar a 70s song?  I kinda remembering my mom saying that was my favorite song when I was 4.  What 4 year old doesn't love sugar?   :P

Ok - Here is a great representation of 'the white man's overbite' (reference Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally).  And whew, nice perms there boys!  :lol

This thread is gold. Keep them coming gang! I am a huge fan of Disco music, which maybe would require its own thread, and have a Disco playlist, curated over the years, that I listen to regularly.

I think that is technically 60s. If memory serves, Don Kirschner pitched this song to the Monkees at the point where they were trying to forge their own identity and play their own instruments, and they wanted zero part of that song.

But sorry j-dude.  That bluejean one is cringy, corny and just not good.  :P

The criteria was “cringy and catchy”. You’re admitting to one openly, and I’m claiming the other qualifier regardless of whether that be “good” or “bad” to the hearer.

So there.  :rollin

THIS is definitely “cringy and catchy”

Some of these song suggestions are really great songs, but not necessarily “cringy”

Bread had a few qualifying entries. Aubrey came to mind, as did Baby I’m a Want You.

But I figured the top entry should be the slab of cheese that was Lost Without Your Love
