I had a slight cold as well. I just pop some Mucinex-D (the 24 hour one) and after a couple of days I was fine.

I suspect this may be my problem.  My summer cold is here.  Monday night, I barely slept.  I was up every hour blowing my nose and trying to breathe.  Now it's moved to my chest and it hangs on hard when it gets to this point.  I'll be coughing for another month.

In other news, my pond guys came by on Tuesday and installed the new liner and felt.  Gave me some pots for replanting the water plants (as opposed to just replanting them amid the rocks.  I've gotten started reassembling the rock, but it's going to be a very long and tedious process.  I have all the fish in a holding pool nearby.  It isn't particularly sturdy, but it works in a pinch.  So Mrs. C.'s brothers are coming up on Saturday (both are geologists and environmental enthusiasts) to help rebuild the pond - laying all the rock and replanting all the plants.  I don't think it will all be completed that day, but it will get close, I think.

Once this is done, re-rocked, plants properly planted, water in, beneficial bacterial levels re-established, and fish in and happy, I will be more elated than one can imagine.  This leaking has been a thorn in my side for well over a year now.  If it leaks now, I will only be able to attribute it to magic.  With every new layer of rock I've removed, and every look at the way the pond is setup, my pond guys, who are CRAZY knowledgeable about this stuff, are just aghast.  Clearly whoever built this pond had no clue what they were doing.  Now I'm having to bust my ass (literally, as I slipped on algae and mud the other night and cut my elbow open) to correct what was a shoddy job in the first place.

Oh my God, yes.  I started noticing leakage well over a year ago, and it wasn't overly dramatic, but it has gotten way worse, as time has gone on.  Early this summer, it would lose several inches of water in 2-3 days' time.  We emptied the rocks and plants and put the fish back in while waiting a month or two for the pond guys' schedule to free up.  They're literally the only people in this area that do this kind of work, so they're crazy busy.  So in the meantime, I've had to battle bad algae blooms that have left the water green to the point that you literally couldn't see a foot into the water.  I have probably a ton+ (no shit) of boulder, river rock, and gravel laying here, there, and everywhere, that we extracted all by hand.  Now we have to put it all back together by hand.  Which I think will actually be the easier part.

The previous build just planted all the plants amid the rocks.  With that, the roots grow all over the place, through all the rocks, and just take over and get completely out of control.  That made dismantling everything more difficult than I would ever have imagined.  By redoing them in pots where they can be contained better and managed better, if I should (God forbid) ever have to do this again, it should be a little easier.

I can't even begin to describe what a weight off my shoulders this will be when it's done.

Unfortunately, the pond was there when we moved in.  Our options were to either fix the problem or give away all of the fish and fill it in.  Either option would have been expensive, though I probably could've gotten some decent money for all of this rock I have laying around.

We were orginally going to pave our back patio ourselves, but since we simply have not had time and are honestly concerned we don't know enough about what we are doing, we're thinking now of having a contractor do it. Already got an estimate, just need to determine when and what. It's a small patio so it isn't a huge project, but it's one we want to do because it will increase the value of the house.

If I'd had my pond guys dismantle the entire pond, install the new liner, and rebuild the entire pond the right way, they were estimating like $5,000.  No way I can swing that, especially since they do not accept credit cards.  So we've taken it upon ourselves to do all the heavy lifting and rebuilding, only paying them to come in and install the liner and make all the proper connections to the skimmer and the biofalls.

With our patio, we could probably get all the supplies we *think* we need for around $450, and then just put hours and hours into trying to make it work, with who the hell knows how many possibilities for catastrophic error. To have this contractor break up the ground that is there, properly dig out and level it, ensure our drainage and sump pump are properly in place, and then neatly seal and lay the paving, would run about $2100. I'm thinking the higher price tag will outweigh the potential for a pair of novices fucking up the joint.

Fortunately, in my instance, all of the water moving features are outside the pond's perimeter, as opposed to within the pond, making maintenance much easier to contend with.  If a pump goes out, I damn sure don't want it on the bottom of the pond like some are set up.  So at this rate, it's really a matter of laying rock down how we want it to look (with some pointers form my pond guys), positioning plants where we want them, rinsing and vacuuming thoroughly, refilling with water, and re-introducing the fish.  There's water balance issues to deal with that take time, like re-establishing beneficial bacteria into the system so that the plants can properly absorb anything that might encourage algae growth, etc.  Amazingly, after as much time as I've spent having to fuck with all of this, I'm fairly confident in what all I have to do going forward.

Our backyard is in chaos right now because we had to cut down two giant trees whose roots were causing the garage wall to crack. Trees have been removed and the wall has been repaired. Now we just need to put the backyard and garage back together. Kind of sucks for my parents though because they paid someone a bunch of money last year to pick out and plant stuff that does well in shade in the backyard, and now the backyard gets no shade Meanwhile I'm just annoyed because the work in the garage has compromised my brewing space
