The Old People Appreciation Thread
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:41:57 AM »
In this thread discuss instances of awesome elderly folks.

The other day I saw an older guy (probably in his 70s) driving his riding lawnmower down the sidewalk with his big dog an a leash walking next to him. To top it off, he had the biggest cigar I've ever seen in his mouth.

I also get a huge kick out of the old couples that go to McDonalds and get two smal coffees, two hamburgers, and share a small fry.

An old lady in my line at the grocery store the other day had two things of Eggnog. One regular, one mixed with really hard alcohol. She hands me the regular. "Take this one back." she says. "It's the weekend, and I'm getting smashed." You go, old lady. You go.  :metal

There's another old woman who always tells me I look like her great grandson. She's 98, no visible health problems, and she's always cracking jokes. She always comes in with her 75 year old daughter, and always tells me advice like "Don't party as hard as I did, son. That's how you end up with kids like this one." And points to her daughter, who's raising an eyebrow. It's awesome.  :lol Can you imagine being 75, still taking your mother to the grocery and having her be that healthy too? Jebus.
Hire me. I'm talentless but malleable.

I couldn't imagine being 75 and having my 98 year old mother ribbing me like that  :rollin

As a truck driver I work with a bunch of guys who've been driving longer than I've been alive.  Full of great advice and some great humor  :tup

Fuck yeah old people.

I have an 80 year old uncle that's as healthy as he's ever been and I love having a few beers with him while listening to his fart and dick jokes.

Appreciation given! I love my g-pa, he's 86 and still works everyday, goes scuba-diving off the coast of Mexico and can probably still whoop my ass.

Most of the old people in my family are pretty crazy...
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I would like to appreciate my two grandmothers. One is 89, the other 90. Both still live on their own. One still works out of the house selling a clothing self dry cleaning product, the other volunteers at the local hospital as a translator for the Mexican new mothers in the maternity wing. They are truly amazing women.

Man, at first I thought this was gonna be a thread about old people here on DTF, with "old" being relative of course.  Then I could get all mock-offended at being called old.  Or if no one mentioned me, I could get all mock-offended at not being called old.

Now I don't know what to do.  My grandparents have all been gone for a long time, and my dad's still around, and he's awesome, but he drives me nuts because he... aw fuck, you don't want to hear it.

This. I will never understand how it is legitimate that you're still allowed to drive even if you can't see, move or whatever anymore.  :lol  At least that's the way it is in Germany.

I rarely get to meet old people to talk to and I really like to, especially here in the U.S. I wish I would once talk to someone who was in their twenties or thirties DURING the twenties or thirties, but with every passing year my chances are getting slimmer :/
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

So much win in this thread so far. I will add some stories later. Being a hospice worker, I spend almost every day with old folks and I love it. My patients range from 50-100!

Easy solution: volunteer in a nursing home or for a hospice... or any organization that serves older folks. Lots of options.. and you're right, time is running out but there are still plenty of sharp-minded people that age around.

:).. Lots of options!

I just said goodbye to one of my favorite old men, a former patient who was a WWII vet. He had a great story about hijacking a shipment of PBR in the desert.

One of the older guys in the church choir was a pilot during WWII, and he told me a story one time about a special "unauthorized" mission to pick up a load of cigarettes.  Like, hundreds of cartons of Marlboros.  But during wartime, cigarettes were a valuable commodity just like anything else, and they got shot at on the way out of there.  One of his buddies was hit and killed.  I was gonna make a joke about how cigarettes can kill you, but I looked at his face, and he was near tears.  So I (wisely) kept my mouth shut.

Old people are awesome.  If your grandparents are still living, go hang out with them.  You will be enriched.
