What so called Djent bands do Dream Theater Fans listen to?
« on: January 06, 2012, 11:24:43 AM »
Lately a friend has turned me on to some talented bands and I was wondering if other DT fans liked this style of music as well and if so name a few.
Periphery is an obvious choice and they are solid.
Stuctures, Textures, ERRA and Tesseract are some more that I am getting into and show promise.

Maybe it would help  if I knew what Djent meant... Could anyone give me a short description of the genre?

And, should't this thread be in General Music Discussion rather than Dream Theater Discussion?

It is not reallya Genre, it was a name given to the guitar sound, kind of a drop tuned compressed sound. The bands usally have black, or death metal tendencies with screaming and natural vocals included. The music is very active and groove driven with the better bands showing excellent musicianship.
If the Mod thinks the thread should be moved then so be it, but I think we might hear a little taste of this style on the next DT album. Johns guitar sound has shifted slighlty toward this sound already IMO.

I would love to hear DT do a djent influenced song. It's not exactly their style but I have no doubt that they could pull it off very well if they tried. And DT has always been about incorporating different styles into their sound so... one can dream. :)

In terms of bands that I listen to, the main ones are Tesseract, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, a bit of Textures and then just some random smaller bands like Entrosolet. As Jamesman mentioned, Cloudkicker is awesome! And always a good choice for people who don't dig the harsh vocals as much.

Periphery. Meshuggah started it years ago but Misha really is the guy alot of people follow in terms of the 'bedroom studio' approach to the djent style.

the beginning of Raw Dog is the closest they went towards that sound.

Periphery, only so far. Can't get into Meshuggah.

Mind you, I hated Periphery when I first heard them. Then I listened to 'Racecar'. Then I subsequently loved the rest of the album.

Periphery's new album is gonna blow the first one out of the water. Spencer has improved his vocals incredibly. Mark from Haunted Shores (Mark/Misha sideproject) is now a guitarist in Periphery. Everybody check out the song 'Scarlet' by Haunted Shores and 'Have A Blast' by Bulb, as they will both be new Periphery songs

EDIT:

Have A Blast: https://soundcloud.com/dmure/bulb-have-a-blast

Animals As Leaders is a must-listen for anyone into djent. They're an instrumental band with a fantastic lead guitarist named Tosin Abasi. Check them out.

I try not to think about that song lol. It's literally the only DT song that I never feel like listening to.

I feel like the djent sound works a lot better when it's used sparingly. I tend to not like bands that follow the djent-soft chorus-djent-soft chorus pattern. SikTh has some djent littered about their songs, but it works really well because it's not oversaturated. Diablo Swing Orchestra has one song that has one of the best djent riffs I've ever heard, and it sticks out so much more when it's not surrounded by others.

That said, I do listen to Meshuggah, Textures, and TesseracT from time to time if I'm in the mood for some full-on djent.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I do too. Most metalcore sucks, and djent seems like a better, more progressive version of metalcore. It's good stuff.

That shit was nuts.  But they seem like a progressive metal instrumental band, a la LTE or something like that.  I don't see anything different enough that a new genre needed to be invented for them.

Djent's not really a genre, it's just a term for a distinct style of production that a fair number of prog-metal bands use.

The fact that I have a playlist called Djent might be a clue as to how much of that stuff I listen to, but my favorites are Periphery, Animals as Leaders, and Cloudkicker. Djent's a little broader than just "the band chugs on a riff like Meshuggah", though that's where it started. Some interesting stuff in the djent end of the music spectrum.

the biggest djent bands are trying to get away from the djent label due to its recent saturation. they call themselves progressive metal

Periphery even has John Petrucci's nephew in the band.

I think they're OK but I just can't stand the whiney little singer.

Been listening to Periphery and Textures for some time now, and recently got into Meshuggah (which is a band I really love now).

But other than that I wouldn't say there's much djent i listen to.

I've had friggin' CAFO on repeat the last three days. It's just too bawls. I totally forgot about Veil of Maya though, I listened to them quite a bit a couple years ago. Not so much these days but still some goodies from that band. Heard a few songs from Born of Osiris a while ago as well; all of these thanks to an apparent djent-fan friend of mine. Pretty good stuff but at times a bit too hardcore for me. Animals as Leaders definitely takes the cake though, it's just so god damn super saiyan.
