I find that all the finest albums improve with age. BC&SL is hardly my favourite DT album, but I'm not going to just throw it away!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
Of course Dream Theater isn't that good. Good music is obviously about 3 minute pop songs and catchy hooks.
Dream Theater aren't that good. Neither was Beethoven, or Mozart, or Bach. Pfft, 20 minute epics. Who needs that?

I only ever listen to TCOT from BC&SL now. Initially quite liked it with some misgivings. Those misgivings grew stronger over time, unfortunately. Had some great potential but too many wince moments and mediocrity, imo. I don't get why everyone rates Wither, for example. A "moving" ballad about struggling to write good lyrics expressed through, er, stiff wooden lyrics. Touches me deeply.  :tdwn

Very excited about On The Backs Of Angels, though.  :)

I still like BC&SL, although when I ranked the albums yesterday for another thread I found that it had gone down a few pegs since my last ranking. It has a few great tracks (ANTR, Wither, TBOT, TCOT) and a few that I don't really care for (TSF and AROP). Plus that artwork never was a favourite of mine, ADTOE is a step up from that IMHO.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

This.  I'm not a huge fan of the album myself, but I'll always own everything these guys release.  And yes I may find myself enjoying this record more than I do now sometime down the road.  That's the beauty of DT!

What about the saint behind the altar?

Okay, seriously, on topic, that does suck though. Count of Tuscany is my favorite song on that album.

I'm proud to have derailed this topic for a bit there.

I was definitley happy that the lyrics to OtBoA were a return to more esoteric subject matter. bCSL was awful in the lyrics department IMO, which is homestly one of the reasons I don't. regard it highly.  Any single line of tue new tune is better than the whole lyrical content of TCOT, ANTR, TBOT, and Wither. I know - WAIT A MINUTE MAN that was OUT OF NOWHERE LIKE A BULLET IN THE NIGHT!! /cheesy

This.
IDK why, I just don't care for it.
Which is funny, because that's what's on the only DT T-shirt I have. Lol. But my mom bought it for me, so she didn't know :D

All the tracks are too long and then there are two awkward commercial singles tucked in the middle. That's not to say I dislike the album, but that in conjunction with the lyrics makes it a bit difficult to listen to.

I like each individual song from BC&SL but, weirdly, I really don't like listening to them as a part of an album. There's something that doesn't gel them together very well for me.

The new song is better than everything on BC&SL except for TCOT, but that alone is reason enough not to throw it out.

I don't like BC&SL.

did anyone ask??
Was this necessary?
Me or him?

HOA: I don't think there's any need to get defensive. I shared my opinion in a subjective, nonthreatening, (and granted, terse) way. This is a thread about BC&SL, so you can expect opinions to run both ways.

No. BC&SL is a good album. Even if it wasn't, why throw it away? It's a part of my collection. Plus, you've only heard one song. Don't you think you should listen to the whole album first before making such a decision?

I still like BC&SL. It's holding power is a lot higher than SC's was two years after it came out. However, I did go back to listen to SC the other day and it wasn't TOO too bad, but I've listened to BC&SL a LOT more than SC in the 2 years since it was released.

I am still highly looking forward to ADTOE, though, and I expect it to be an album that's got variety (like 8VM and SC) but has stellar playing (like IAW and SFAM) and great production (like FII and most of BC&SL).

ADTOE will most likely kick the asses of ToT, 8vm, BC&SL, and that other album, but I still love all DT albums and there's no reason to dump any of them.  :heart

I don't care for the lyrics, which seem to be there just for the sake of being there--ANTR and TCoT's lyrics are just embarrassing. The melodies, aside from a select few in TBoT (such as JP's guitar solo) don't stick in my head. The conclusion to the AA suite (which I was never fond of anyway) lacked any imagination and came off as very anticlimactic. Jordan's keyboard solos are as tasteless as ever.
