I feel the songs on that album are linked and are powerful. I also LOVE the story it tells. Godhead's Lament is probably my favorite on the album, with Serenity Painted Death in a close second.

Still Life is probably my favourite, maybe a tie with BWP.

I don't understand Mikael now. Is he becoming more and more arrogant as time goes by or is it just a tongue-in-cheek gimmick?

What?  He's never been arrogant.  That stuff he says about being a genius is clearly tongue-in-cheek. :P  Even if it is mostly true.

He pretty frequently uses words like "shit" to describe his own work, and he doesn't consider himself a good singer. I wouldn't call him arrogant at all.

But he also jokes about he's a genius and a sexy beast which is what I think SDN is referring to.

He's delighfully self-depricating, but at the same time has created this sort of stage persona that is so OTT and hilarious that it probably comes across as arrogant and egotistical.

Quote from: Mikael Åkerfeldt
I knew I'm the best fuckin' singer out there. Let's face it, I'm a full blown genius and sexy as fuck.
From the latest issue of Rock presents Prog, apparently he got voted the best singer by the readers or something. Still, an epic response like that is why I love Mikael.  :lol
There's also an interview with Storm Corrosion, but nothing really new compared to what we've already learned through internet.

why does My Arms, Your Hearse never get much love? i think it's a fantastic record, top to bottom. i could see a case being made for "Credence" being a bit meh, and the segues between songs are definitely poorly done, but the actual songs themselves are brilliant, right up there with Still Life and BWP songwriting (imo). Åkerfeldt's cold didn't inhibit his vocals much; hell, they made his growl even more menacing. the production is great too! totally overlooked record in a vast and awesome catalog.

MAYH has been the victim of unlucky timing for me. I downloaded a crop of random Opeth tracks back in '04 and loved 'em. Problem was the majority were from BWP and I was in the middle of a shift when I was a driver at Domino's one day and just HAD to have an Opeth album but the only CD place in my delivery area (we could be heavily disciplined if caught driving in another store's delivery area) was Barnes and Noble. They only had MAYH so I said fuck it and got it. Very good album with a vibe all its own that I like a lot to this day as I do all of their stuff except for half of Watershed and Heritage.

Problem was, while I was listening to awesomeness like April Ethereal, When, Demon of the Fall, and Karma, I was just thinking "Fuck, I really wanna hear The Leper Affinity, Bleak, etc." Just think of being on a date with a pretty cute chick the day after finding out a girl you carried a torch for during a very long period of time is getting married but with less crying and consolation masturbation at the end of the night (but not that much less.)

I subcribe the best album of 2011 part. Can't subscribe the ADTOE comment though since sadly ADTOE has zero replay value for me.

Speaking of Heritage, what bands of the 70s prog does it resemble the most? I'd like to listen to some more music in this vein, I absolutely love this record.

Well, I was trying to be kind :lol Yeah, same here. I never find myself with the urge of listening to ADTOE these days. Despite it being a good album and MM having injected some new life into the band, these days they're bit on the outside of my taste.

We are, at least in theory. We haven't met yet but plan to do so in late March to see what we're gonna do.

Still bummed they didn't play Famine when I saw them, but I guess it could be a bit tricky to play live. The flute-solo could be interesting to see how they would handle.

Hearing the songs live really helped improve my opinion of Heritage, but yeah, I can't really listen to the album versions much anymore.  Too sterile.

I prefer the live versions of the Heritage songs. I don't know what it is about them but I just prefer them live.

For me, there was more energy in those songs when I saw them, and the heavier parts sounded really heavy, while on Heritage they sound "classic rock heavy" like Led Zeppelin or something.  Distorted and heavy, but not the modern heaviness that Opeth can do so well, if that makes sense.
