Avantasia v. Ayreon: A Metal Opera throwdown
« on: March 30, 2020, 12:08:59 PM »
Both have had about the same number of album releases (give or take) and both are 'supergroups' that employ a revolving door of players and vocalists.

Who do you take?

I'm pretty sure who wins, but as is the case with most polls here, it's more about the discussion than the winner.

Ayreon. What I've heard of Avantasia was fine, but didn't really grab me the way Ayreon did.

Avantasia, easily.  Better songs and ultimately a heavier band.

I like some Ayreon, but prefer Star One, since those two albums are more metal and song oriented, than Ayreon has turned out to be.  Ayreon really sounds too "spacey" to me, and the albums are just way too cumbersome to get through.

I'd say Avantasia, although it's close. Avantasia's first two albums are pretty bad, and The Mystery of Time is kind of flat and uninspired for the most part, but the Scarecrow saga is incredible, along with Ghostlights and (to a lesser extent) Moonglow.

Avantasia has great Power Metal, Speed songs. Includes many great vocalists and some special surprises, Klaus Meine. I don't have Mystery of Time, so can't judge that. The first 2 albums are great as well.

Ayreon is my choice. I like the Grand concept of the albums, The Source is a nice prequel for 01, and makes me feel some of the characters from The Source are in 01 as well. Just by the tone in their voices.

What. They're landmark albums in the entire genre of power metal for a reason!
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

David DeFeis is a delight, but the rest of the music just doesn't do much for me. Vocals don't really work for me either, outside of the aforementioned DeFeis and some good moments from Tobi. Lyrics are pretty poor and silly/cheesy, which I wouldn't mind if they were paired with better music, but when this is their backdrop, it just doesn't work.

Thought the same thing. Having some deja vu here.

Ayreon. Have not heard a note of Avantasia. Maybe I will check some stuff out since I don't have much to do.

I wouldn't say I am a huge fan of Avantasia but agree with the above

I'm not really a fan of either but if Ayreon has a song anywhere near as good as The Scarecrow I've yet to hear it.

Apples and oranges, but try into the Black Hole with His Royal Badass Majesty, the Air Raid Siren Bruce Dickinson.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Yup, got that in my last roulette and it's probably the best Ayreon song I've heard. But still not on the same level as The Scarecrow

Consider that when we had a big survivor tournament for Ayreon, that's the song that actually won. So if you don't consider the song that has been collectively declared as the best Ayreon song a good match up for The Scarecrow (but then again: what is?), I'd suggest to not make exploring Ayreon a top priority  :D
