Your favorite 10 seconds in music.
« on: April 07, 2011, 07:05:23 PM »
Tried and failed to narrow it down to one. Here's a few off the top of my head,

Rush - The Spirit of Radio (0:11-0:21)
Rush - Cygnus X-1 (9:22 - 9:32)
Dream Theater - 6:00 (0:45 - 0:55)
Tool - Lateralus (6:11 - 6:21)
Coheed and Cambria - 21:13 (6:24 - 6:34)
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man (5:11 - 5:21)
Frost* - Hyperventilate (3:14 - 3:24)
Porcupine Tree - The Incident (3:30 - 3:40)

Lol let's see if anyone can actually do it.

It's hard to find verses that are 10 seconds or less.  Here are the ones I came up with before I got bored and disheartened at the daunting task before me:

Pain of Salvation - King of Loss (7:02 - 7:12) <-- favorite
Alcest - Percées de Lumière (4:16 - 4:26)
Agalloch - Fire Above, Ice Below (6:03 - 6:13) <-- favorite section of music, but it's not great out of context
Negura Bunget - Esarul de Lumini (1:36 - 1:46)
A Perfect Circle - Gravity (3:02 - 3:12)

Bands that have way too many for me to acknowledge:

Agalloch
Ayreon
Tool
Opeth
Porcupine Tree
Riverside

A lot of these are just starts to some of my favorite riffs, solos or moments, but the way they are introduced, and how they affect the rest of the music make them an amazing 10 seconds listening experience.

Alter Bridge - Blackbird (5:15-5:25)
Alter Bridge - Find The Real (4:10 - 4:23)
Ours - Fallen Souls (2:57-3:07)
Down - Lifer (4:14-4:24)
Dream Theater - The Shattered Fortress (10:42-10:55...Sue me)
Dream Theater - Misunderstood (3:32 - 3:42)
Dream Theater - Learning TO Live (7:03 - 7:13)
Dream Theater - Home (1:42 - 1:52) WOMP WOMP
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (11:06 - 11:23)
Porcupine Tree - Sleep Together (5:25 - 5:35)
Porcupine Tree - Normal (4:50 - 5:00)
Devin Townsend - Funeral (0:00 - 0:10...Makes me smile every time)
Devin Townsend - Deadhead (1:19 - 1:29)
Devin Townsend - Pixilate (6:41 - 6:51)
Devin Townsend - Supercrush! (1:19 - 1:29)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (5:10 - 5:20)
Opeth - The Baying Of The Hounds (9:50 - 10:00)
Opeth - Ghost Of Perdition (1:59-2:09)
Opeth - Hessian Peel (6:33 - 6:43)
Muse - Stockholm Syndrome (4:31-4:41)
Rage Against The Machine - Wake Up (4:02 - 4:12)
Rage Against The Machine - Snakecharmer (1:13 - 1:23)
Yes - Starship Trooper (5:39 - 5:49)
Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused (5:01 - 5:11)
Led Zeppelin - Bring It On Home - (1:41 - 1:51)
Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song (5:01 - 5:11)
Radiohead - Optomistic (4:21 - 4:31)
Spiritual Beggars - Blessed (0:10 - 0:20)

I could do more, but I think I'll stop here.  I suggest anyone who enjoys Hard rock to any extent to check out every song here that they don't know.

6:45 to 6:55 in Not Unlike The Waves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuPz7cMD3qs

3:41 to 3:51 (varies) in Brahms 1st Piano Concerto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4g3v_h3_sU

5:51 to 6:01 in Dressed In Black https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW-F6uMEu2A

that'll do for now  :metal

on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Shit, indeed.

I can't think of too many right now, but I know there are a lot... the one that comes to mind first is the "Beware the fisherman who's casting out his line into a dried up river bed, but don't try to tell him cause he wouldn't believe you..." bit in Heathaze by Genesis. Too lazy to check the timestamp, but yeah.

Even though DT doesn't do much for me anymore, the end of Octavarium on Score when JP hit that note.  :metal

Any 10 seconds from any song on Tales from Topographic Oceans or Close the the Edge

And finally the last 10 seconds of This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed and Take the Veil.

Genesis - Firth of Fifth - 4.32 to 4.42
ELP - Karn Evil 9 - 13.10 to 13.20
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King - 0.57 to 1.07
Dream Theater - Octavarium - 19.38 to 19.48
Captain Beefheart - Further Than We've Gone - 2.00 to 2.10

God that is hard, there's so so so so so many more. Very, very difficult question.

hmmm

Joe Satriani - Crushing Day....guitar finish to that song...WOW.
Theocracy - Laying the Demon to Rest...the beginning...holy fuck what a vocal note.
Lines in the Sand (once in a live time) the intro...great.
Megadeth - Five Majics....the guitar solo at the end...probably a tad longer than 10 seconds but so what....Marty..at his best.

that's all I got.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

The Whirlwind Overture reprise at the end of DwEG.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. mmm Im pretty sure it's the other way, you know an Overture is supposed to have parts of the others songs on the Album.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Very difficult, but off the top of my head-

DT- Learning to Live: F# into solo
DT- The Glass Prison: That one keyboard riff over the intro.
LTE- Paradigm Shift: Intro.
LTE- Acid Rain: The intro to the keyboard solo, after the guitar solo.
LTE- Universal Mind: End of the piano segment.
Tool- Vicarious: The outro.
Tool- Lateralus: That part you said.
Metallica- Orion: Bass solo.
