Please recommend me some music!
« on: February 16, 2015, 12:19:06 AM »
I realized I've been listening to the same bands for the last ten years ever since I got into progressive rock/metal since I was a twelve year old girl, haha. I think I need to expand my listening circle really badly.

I don't have many friends that share my musical taste - they're all too busy listening to Korean pop, so I've no real way to discover new cool and possibly obscure bands besides sifting through things on YouTube recommended, but its not been a very efficient way.

I was hoping people here can help hook me up with some new bands. So, I like Dream Theater a lot - but only their older works like Scenes from a Memory and Images and Words. I'm not big on Train of Thought because I just don't like the heavier metal sound. I prefer music that is a little melancholy but has this uplifting and warm quality to it - IaW was really my top album.

A few other bands I really enjoy are TransAtlantic, a few stuff from Spock's Beard, I absolutely adore ever track from Liquid Tension Experiment, and I also love everything about Wobbler. I also like Canterbury scene progressive rock like National Health.

I basically like the 'softer' sounds from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I'm just not big on heavy stuff. I guess I am so particular, its been a big hard for me to find things. I hope the community here can help me out.

You'll get a ton of excellent suggestions here. I'll start by recommending Porcupine Tree. Deadwing & In Absentia are the albums I'd start with, but they have a catalogue full of different stuff.

And after that if you want more, you should check Steven Wilson's solo albums. His newest is coming in two weeks exactly.

Try Last.fm. Even if you don't actually make a profile and scrobble, between the similar artists lists on artist pages and the tag pages, you can find plenty.

My favorite progressive rock band would probably be Mars Volta, so I'd recommend them. They're not overly heavy, but they are very intense and chaotic, and their songs often take a lot of surprising twists and turns, which should be nice if you enjoy that side of Prog. Either go for De-Loused in the Comatorium or Frances the Mute as your first album IMO.

Weather Systems, Second Life Syndrome, and Lightbulb Sun respectively ;) . Although I'd second the Deadwing & In Absentia recs for Porcupine Tree (I love those albums), they are kind of dark, sad, and even a bit heavy here and there. The album I recommend you is melancholic, yet warm and uplifting - and fucking catchy.

And some personal recs:

Flying Colors - Flying Colors
Ayreon - The Human Equation
Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud
Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn

Anathema - Weather Systems and Distant Satellites.

Maybe We're Here Because We're Here, but I haven't listened to that album much.

Also, KrotchRaut is pretty mellow. Give 'em a shot. :neverusethis:

Porcupine Tree's albums Sky Moves Sideways and Stupid Dream are beautiful and not too heavy.

I'll jump on the Anathema suggestion. Sounds pretty much like what you want. Go for Weather Systems first, probably.

Definitely try your hand at Last.fm. Super useful for recommendations.

As for what you might dig:

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (the first track may not exactly be your speed, but at least give the rest a try)
Soft Machine - Third
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Emerson Lake & Palmer
Yes - Close to the Edge (probably already been recommended ITT but it's so amazing that it needs to be reiterated)
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (assuming you haven't already heard it, seeing as you like Canterbury scene)
The Dear Hunter - Act II: The Meaning of, & All Things Regarding Ms. Leading
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
Anathema - Weather Systems
Haken - The Mountain

And of course, Porcupine Tree in general.

Gotta try Moon Safari. Blomljud is their best album but it's a bit dense, Himlabacken Vol 1 is great and much more accessible.

Thanks for all the replies, fellas. I'm checking each album out right now. I've actually heard of some of these recommendations like Mike Oldfield, Ayreon, already. I wasn't too big on Ayreon because I felt some of their album were a little too cheesy, but I actually never listened to Human Equation. I remember not being too fond of Porcupine Tree either because of their vocals. Though it's been over five years since I've given them a listen to. I should definitely try again.

given you love LTE and Canterbury music, I suggested both Return to Forever and Al Di Meola; but I'm surprised barely any of the other suggestions in this topic are in that style.

seltaire,
Curiuous, how much jazz-rock/jazz-fusion have you heard? even just this Al Di Meola track alone should appeal to many who love LTE basically because LTE more or less borrowed a riff from it on Acid Rain

Igor Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring

Classical music for prog fans. Made in 1913, this thing's got more time signature changes than Dance of Eternity played 5 times straight. If you can read musical notation, here's a reduced score of the final movement. Count the time signature changes!

If you're looking for something that's still "proggy" but a bit more... Melodic? You can find that in one of his other popular works, The Firebird. (made in 1911) The ending is considered one of the greatest endings in all of musical history, in the time signature 7/4 no less!

With this in mind, here's some suggestions were to start:

Cirkus Maximus - Last Goodbye Very DT:ish and uplifting music especially their recent album.
Beyond The Bridge - World Of Wonders Also very DT:ish and very melodic and melancholy. Their debut album is really good.
Pagan's Mind - Eyes Of Fire Nothing that you actually seeking for but a great band so I command you anyway!

Start here atleast.  :)

This is actually a brilliant idea. The recommendations could be grouped as "power metal with prog", " 70s classic prog", "Canterbury/Zehul/Italian scene", etc. - and list bands with their official thread.
