Bundles Battle - Volume 3: 1984
« on: March 21, 2021, 07:05:02 PM »
Let's jump ahead a few years for Volume 3.

If you could only listen to one of those bundles for the rest of your life, which one are you taking?

Option 1 for me here, since Option 2 has the only album here that I don't care much about (Powerslave).  I included it of course cause I know it is pretty well liked among fans.

Have yet to own more than one album in any of these polls. But give me Rush/QR any day.

This is the first one where I know enough to really get involved. I really like Ride the Lightning, and the Priest album is solid, but Grace Under Pressure is a Rush album I like a lot and while I have problems with the middle part of Powerslave, the four bookending tracks are undeniable. So the second one takes it for me.

My favorite album in the bundles is Warning. It is so strong that any bundle with it will win.

As big of an Iron Maiden fan as I am, I'm not a huge Powerslave guy, although it's aged pretty well.

Ride the Lightning is my #4 out of the first 4 Metallica albums.

Grace Under Pressure and 1984 are both glorified 5 or 6 song EPs as far as I'm concerned.

would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

This feels like a hot take to me. However, Ride the Lightning is my favorite of the first 4 Metallica albums, so I'm probably biased. :corn

It's not meant to be a hot take. Their first four albums are great, but I have a soft spot for Kill 'Em All. That's a TOP 10 album of all time for me.

I really like ride the lightning and 1984, but both grace under pressure and powerslave are excellent. I don't care for the other 2 albums. Group 2 gets my vote

Huge IM fan, though Powerslave is somewhere in the middle of my rankings. Warning holds up well for me. Only a moderate fan of Priest, and a hits fan of VH. Don't care for Metallica or much of 80s Rush. That easily puts #2 over the top for me.

RTL is my favorite of the first four, as well, and competing with The Black Album for my favorite overall. Ranking that first four:

1. Ride the Lightning
2. ...And Justice for All
3. Master of Puppets
4. Kill 'Em All

This one hurts more than all the others so far. I *REALLY* love every album on both lists. I’ll have to think about it.

Second group easily.
I like but don't love DOF, RTL is probably my favorite Metallica album but I'm not a big Metallica guy and I'm not a fan of 1984.
Powerslave is undoubtedly my favorite Maiden album and maybe my favorite metal album in general, I love The Warning (my second fav QR album after O:M) and GUP is my favorite synth-era Rush album.

As much as generally Iron Maiden would win a poll alone no matter the pairing, the lethal combo of Ride the Lightning (favorite Metallica album) and Defenders of the Faith (top 3 Priest album, possibly number 2) wins. I don't know the Rush and Van Halen albums and The Warning is good but it's no Mindcrime to help its group win.

Pretty easy choice.  #2.  I was never in to Priest, or early Metallica until later in life.  Still not terribly important albums for me.

This is the first grouping that I'm like "who gives a shit?"   Most of these albums do nothing for me.

Powerslave (Iron Maiden)
Defenders of the Faith (Judas Priest)
1984 (Van Halen)
Grace Under Pressure (Rush)
The Warning (Queensryche)

Ride the Lightning (Metallica)

The first two are basically a tie; I gave it to Maiden because I like the band better, and Side Two is almost perfect.  But "The Sentinel"!

There's a big drop off after 1984; you all know by now what I think of p/g, so for that to be FOURTH out of sixth says something.  I guess I'm going with Option 2, though, by default.

EDIT:  Now that I saw Option 2 crushing Option 1, I want to change my vote!   :) :)

This is pretty easy:  Group 2.

My opinions about GUP have been well articulated, but it's still miles better than 1984, and I'd probably rank both Powerslave and The Warning ahead of Defenders and Ride (even though Defenders might be my favorite Priest album and Ride features two of my top five Metallica songs).

Anyway, 2 for me. The only album I would miss in group 1 is Metallica. Grace Under Pressure alone wins 2 for me. Powerslave and Warning are just bonuses.

This is tough.  Ride the Lightning is my favorite out of the whole batch.  But while I consider Powerslave to be the second weakest of the "classic" Maiden albums, I'll take the three good songs (Two Minutes, the title song, and Rime).  The Warning isn't bad either, although probably the weakest "classic" Queensryche album.  So I guess I'll take group #2.  And assuming I am stuck with these on a desert island, I can always use the Rush album for kindling, so group 2 is a win.

This poll is no surprise to me, since the second option contains Rush and Iron Maiden, two most beloved bands on this board after DT.

I think "really good" might be pushing it for GUP, but it's better than 1984 for sure.
