To clarify exactly what this thread is about: As I have occasionally done in the past, I am compiling a "top 10" list of what all of you want to see played next tour, and will send it to my contacts on the inside of the Dream Theater machine. I cannot guarantee that anything from the ultimate list will ever get played. But in the past, those with a say in such matters have appreciated knowing what we would look forward to hearing the most. So, that being said, post your top-10 list ranked from 1 to 10. After a little while, I will tally the results, compile the top 10 based on scoring, and send that along to Dream Theater. With any luck, we might see some of those songs pop up in sets in the not-too-distant future.
-
Oh, and feel free to write WHY you want to hear certain songs, or post anything else related as well.
My personal list:
1. Octavarium: Top 3 DT song for me, and I've never seen it.
2. S2N: Top song from d/t that has never been played, and I think it would slay live.
3. In the Name of God: Haven't seen this done since the TOT tour and have long hoped for a comeback.
4. The Glass Prison: I think this is a long shot, but I'm hoping I get to see it at some point.
5. Take Away My Pain: Has always been a favorite of mine and one that I connect deeply with.
6. Misunderstood: Have been hoping for this one for awhile. It seemed to go over very well live back when it was a mainstay.
7. Lie: I can't remember whether I've never heard this live or if it's been a really long time, but either way...
8. Stream of Consciousness: The only instrumental I have a strong preference for seeing.
9. Learning To Live: I'm okay with most of Images getting a long break, but this one would be nice to have return.
10. Fall Into The Light: Just a banger live. Wouldn't mind seeing it come back.
-
1. Surrender to Reason - One of their best songs from the last 5 albums, not played live yet.
2. Blind Faith - A favorite from SDOIT
3. Glass Prison - A top "yet to see it live" track.
4. Panic Attack - Favorite from 8V
5. S2N - Not played live yet, I think the energy of this song would translate very nicely to a live setting.
6. Stream of Consciousness - Top 5 DT track, and favorite instrumental.
7. Peruvian Skies - A top "yet to see it live" track.
8. Afterlife - Would be nice to represent this album.
9. Moment of Betrayal - Would be nice to represent this album. Great track.
10. In the Presence of Enemies (Pt.1 & Pt.2) - I felt teased when they only played Pt. 1 in the 2019 tour.
-
I really love most of your list. Not crazy about Blind Faith, but wouldn't overly mind if they played it. Otherwise, the only two I wouldn't want are Afterlife (just don't like it) and ITPOE (which I DO like, but just wouldn't want to see it played at the expense of possibly getting Octavarium, and they wouldn't include two songs that long in a set).
-
1. Space-Dye Vest
2. A Change of Seasons
3. Surrounded (with or without the Marillion bridge like they did in 07/08)
4. Take Away My Pain
5. Raise The Knife
6. Blind Faith
7. Beyond This Life
8. Ytse Jam
9. The Root Of All Evil
10. Misunderstood
almost all of those i haven't seen them do before, or they hardly/rarely, if ever play. but i love all of them a lot
-
1: Octavarium - Self explanatory I think, long overdue for a comeback and the return of MP upcoming twentieth anniversary makes this an opportune time
2: The Glass Prison - Similar to the above, long overdue for a comeback and the timing feels right.
3: Surrender to Reason - Please keep the Mangini era songs coming and don't let them go unplayed! This is my top pick for anything off the Mangini albums that hasn't been played live before.
4: Stream of Consciousness - Was always a big fan of this instrumental.
5: Blind Faith - One of my favorite Six Degrees tracks, also feel like it wouldn't be too hard on LaBrie.
6: Voices - Awake has gotten a lot of love in recent years but this one hasn't been heard in quite some time so it would be nice to see it dusted off.
7: The Best of Times - Would be great to finally hear DT perform this one
8: Bridges in the Sky - Total riff fest. I know they played it fairly recently but it's just such a great track and I would love to hear MP's take on the drum parts. IMO it's a Mangini era song that he could really bring a lot to the table on.
9: Illumination Theory - Just a big fan of this epic, hope 2014 wasn't its only moment.
10: Behind the Veil - Similarly since this was only played on a limited summer run, only a few fans have gotten to experience this great track live. Another one where I would love to hear MP's take on the heavier riffing sections.
-
This is a combination of songs I haven't yet seen live and a few other things:
1. Wither
2. Something from WDADU (Light Fuse and Get Away or Afterlife)
3. Stream of Consciousness
4. Anna Lee
5. Octavarium
6. S2N
7. Viper King
8. Transcending Time
9. Behind the Veil
10. Surrender to Reason
Also, FWIW, I have ZERO interest in any of the 12SS (other than TGP and I especially don't want to see Repentance), any of the FII reject tracks, and TBOT.
-
Some great ones listed so far.
1. The Great Debate - my favorite MP drum song
2. Surrender to Reason - for reasons already stated
3. In the Name of God - epic live and ripe for a comeback
4. Misunderstood - Six Degrees disc 1 is severely underrepresented on DVDs
5. Blind Faith - see #4
6. S2N - one of my faves from DoT
7. Octavarium - 20th (ish) anniversary
8. Breaking all Illusions - I don’t get sick of this one
9. The Alien - didn’t attend the tour that they played this on
10. Any other epic they want to
1, 3, 7, and 8 are four of my wife’s favorites so she would be thrilled with any of these. Thanks Bosk.
-
1. The Best of Times - I'm sure everybody would want to see this if Mike felt like it was something he was ready to do
2. The Dark Eternal Night - a super fun live song that just has not been the same since Mike left
3. Octavarium - imo, the crowning achievement of the reformed lineup
4. A surprise cover - even if integrated into a song like Surrounded-Sugar Mice, or on its own like Camera Eye. This is a twist in their format that seemed to die with Mike and I'd like it back.
5 - 10. This goes without saying, but whatever new that they are working on.
-
1. Surrender to Reason. It's due.
2. The Answer Lies Within. Great live vibe.
3. Hell's Kitchen to Lines in the Sand. Never got the whole deal live.
4. Viper King. My favourite DT song in the last 5 years, potentially a monster jam, Deep Purple style
5. The Best of Times. It's time.
6. Stream of Consciousness. The only time I got it, the keyboards broke down mid-song.
7. The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun. For Charlie.
8. Solitary Shell. Should be mandatory.
9. ITPOE. The whole thing.
-
1. Stream of Consciousness - My favorite instrumental which I have yet to see. Was hoping for it with Mangini, but now is a great time to bring it out on tour.
2. Surrender to Reason - This song deserves to be played live at least once. It would be fantastic to have it in the setlist for their first leg or the album tour. I also think it'd sound cool with MP's backing vocals during the "Restless Angels" part.
3. Blind Faith - One I was again hoping to hear with Mangini. One of my favorites from 6DOIT, and this song is a reason why 6DOIT is my favorite DT album.
4. Misunderstood - Same reason as Blind Faith. I would like to see this one live, and I feel it's a song JLB can definitely do well.
5. The Bigger Picture - This was an amazing song live, and it'd be great to hear this one again. I think MP would sound awesome on this song.
6. Scarred - My all-time favorite DT song that I have yet to see. I hope they bring this back sometime in the future, just so I can at least see it one time.
7. Octavarium - Of all the epics, this is one I really want to see live. Mainly getting to hear Medicate, and the build-up of Intervals.
8. At Wit's End - There are songs I hope the band continues to play from the Mangini era and this is one of them.
9. Transcending Time - I was expecting this to be played on the DreamSonic Tour. Since it wasn't, I think it'd be a good song for them to play. To me, this one is a good fit for Portnoy's style.
10. These Walls - I put this here because it's a song I want to see live. Here's hoping it appears at a show I am attending if they go the rotating setlist route.
-
Not a set list, but some general requests to the powers-that-be when planning a tour. I have no idea how else to get this kind of feedback to anyone who might be able to do something about it. ;D
- Not everybody wants to sit down in a seat at a metal gig. Please pick venues that have standing areas so die-hard fans can properly rock out without being pounced on by security. (This is particularly important in Europe/UK!)
- Atmosphere and energy are more important than huge video screens. We want to watch a live prog metal performance, not a bunch of amateurish cartoons on a screen. Five guys + instruments + some basic lighting is all we need! Please pick venues accordingly.
- A sold-out gig in a smaller venue will always be better than a half-empty arena.
- Mix up the set list at least a little bit from night to night.
- Don't charge almost £100 for tickets. Just fucking don't.
-
Good points, but sorry--those are all well above my pay grade. :lol
-
1. Octavarium
2. Only A Matter of Time
3. A Change of Seasons
4. In the Name of God
5. Erotomania
6. Voices
7. Take Away My Pain
8. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu
9. The Glass Prison
10. Raw Dog

Pretty good list! These Walls killed live in 2011! I didn't care for that song much until then. Now it's probably my second favorite behind TROAE from 8V
-
Yeah, it was great live. If they did it, it might make sense to have it paired in the set with another song with the baritone guitar, but I'm not sure how many of those they have for that tuning. Is it just BMU/BMD, or was Panic Attack also on baritone?
-
BMU, BMD is on 7 string
Baritone songs are:
Blind Faith
These Walls
Panic Attack
Wither
Raw Dog (Maybe)
Paralyzed
Out of Reach
To answer the OP
1. Afterlife
2. Lines in the Sand
3. Beyond this Life (w/ the big jam section in the middle)
4. The Way it Used to Be
5. In the Name of God
6. Octavarium
7. Behind the Veil
8. Breaking All Illusions
9. S2N
10. Awaken the Master
-
1: Octavarium
2: The Glass Prison
3: Blind Faith
4: Honor Thy Father
5: In The Presence Of Enemies Part 2 (or both parts)
6: Lines In The Sand
7: Panic Attack
8: This Dying Soul
9: Trial Of Tears
10: Hollow Years
The only songs on that list I've seen them play live before are Panic Attack, Trial Of Tears, and Hollow Years, but it's been a long time and I'd love for them to be brought back. The rest is all some of my favorite songs that I've never seen them play. I know Petrucci struggles with some guitar lines in The Glass Prison and Blind Faith, but if that's the only reason they don't play them I'd rather they just simplify those parts and play them anyways.
-
1. Octavarium - bit of a travesty that such a fan favourite hasn't been played since 2006! Tough to fit it in to setlists of course, but I was stunned they managed to fit in two 'epics' on the 2022 tour and Octavarium wasn't one of them. It's also my #3 DT song and I've seen the 2 above it.
2. In the Name of God - It hasn't been played since 2010 and it's another of my favourites that I haven't seen - it's my #5.
3. The Glass Prison - Like Octavarium, it hasn't made an appearance since 2006. I'd love to see this one, but I'm not holding out much hope. I seem to recall people suggesting it's possibly too difficult to play well, perhaps the chance to play it was with MM and a click track, at the regular album tempo?
4. Sacrificed Sons - Always loved this song and felt it was a bit underrated, but I haven't seen it live. They haven't played it since 2010, so definitely due a comeback.
5. Lines in the Sand - another I haven't seen that hasn't seen the light of day for over 15 years, it looks like 2008 was its last outing.
6. Endless Sacrifice - one of my favourites since I first started listening to the band, but I've never caught it live. A bit further down my list though as they played it much more recently than the others.
7. The Ministry of Lost Souls - similar story to Endless Sacrifice
8. At Wit's End - one of my favourites from their most recent albums. The last time they played it was actually in Glasgow, so I would have seen it, but I didn't go to that tour.
9. In the Presence of Enemies - Another one of my favourites, I don't think they've played this in full since 2008. Understandable with it's length, so I don't foresee it coming back and I'd much rather see Octavarium for a song of this length.
10. Surrender to Reason - not one of my absolute favourites, but it deserves to be played live at some point.
-
01: Octavarium
02: The Glass Prison
03: Stream of Consciousness
04: The Best of Times
05: Only a Matter of Time
06: Lines in the Sand
07: Panic Attack
08: Constant Motion
09: Blind Faith
10: Afterlife

1. S2N – love this song, gives JM the chance to shine, would be great with MP and JP trading vocals with JL
2. Surrender to Reason – great song that has yet to see the light of day
3. Light Fuse and Get Away – personal favorite from WDaDU that hasn’t been played enough
4. Raw Dog – an instrumental I really like and would love to see live
5. You or Me – about time the proper version of this song gets an airing
6. The Way It Used to Be – forgotten “outtake” from FII that deserves to be played again
7. Behind the Veil – great song that only got played a handful of times
8. Don’t Look Past Me – forgotten “outtake” from IaW that didn’t get enough chances to be heard
9. The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun – second favorite from WDaDU that needs to be played again
10. Wither – great song that only got played a handful of times
bonus: 12SS – would love to see this finally happen with the band
-
Well, its an easy start.
1. Octavarium. My #1 song of any band.
Now there's more flexibility.
2. Surrender to Reason or Behind the Veil - I like BtV more but I would be happy with the never-played-live StR
3. The Glass Prision - what a high energy rocker that would be!
4. Something from FII. Peruvian Skies, although played many times, is a top song for me I'd love see . Trial of Tears or Just Let Me Breathe I'd also dig.
5. Disappear. My heart moves every time
6. While we're there, The Best of Times. My heart will be tender for this, perfect time to see it.
7. Breaking All Illusions. Because this just has to be played more and I havent seen it.
7. The Mirror/Lie. I know they played it fairly recently but its a great pair. (Or 1 song ;))
8. Surrounded
9. Sacrificed Sons. It's such a cool and epic song.
10. A Rite of Passage. I want to see that middle part.
And...room in the songs for JP to do some extra Fire Guitar! They seemed to do that more in the early days.
-
1. Octavarium
2. Outcry
3. Forsaken
4. Wither
5. Moment of Betrayal
6. Out of Reach
7. Breaking All Illusions
8. Space Dye Vest
9. These Walls
10. At Wit's End
BAI is the only one I've heard live on this list, and I hope they keep it around. The others are all bucket list. 💙
-
Disappear
-
Edit number two....fine, I ranked them.
1. You Not Me (seriously)
2. Light Fuse and Get Away
3. Take Away My Pain (album version, not Kenny G version)
4. Raw Dog (seriously)
5.Misunderstood
6.Disappear
7.This Is The Life
8.S2N
9.Out of Reach
And hell, I don't even like the song (and I don't hate it) but just play
10. Surrender to Reason
Edit: autocorrect doesn't like me saying hell but to hell with it
-
In no particular order:
Light Fuse and Get Away
You Not Me (seriously)
Take Away My Pain (album version, not Kenny G version)
Raw Dog (seriously)
Misunderstood
Disappear
This Is The Life
S2N
Out of Reach
And he'll, I don't even like the song (and I don't hate it) but just play Surrender to Reason
Ooh, I forgot about This is the Life. Can I have a #11? 😁
-
1. Glass Prison - Killer song, would be killer to see live again.
2. At Wit's End - my favorite song of the Mangini era and I didn't get to see it live.
3. Fatal Tragedy - Because its amazing!
4. Learning to live - Because its amazing!
5. Dance with Eternity - just incredible musicianship and would be awesome to see it played with the classic lineup again.
6. Metropolis - Because its amazing!
7. Home - Labrie always slays this song
8. The Great Debate - Unique, would be fun to hear live again.
9. Scarred - Would love to hear an Awake song that isn't Caught in the Web or 6:00.
10. A view from the top of the world - never saw it live and would love to hear Portnoy's take on it.
-
1-9: Disappear
10: Octavarium
-
I've been lucky enough to see Octavarium on several occasions but it's obvious the fan base as a whole is clamouring for it and I'd love to see it again, too. Anyway, in no particular order:
Octavarium
Trial of Tears
These Walls
The Glass Prison
Blind Faith (with non-improvised piano break this time, Jordan!)
The Answer Lies Within
Vacant
Stream of Consciousness
The Best of Times (zero chance. MP said again recently that he struggles to even listen to it)
Take Away My Pain
I've actually seen them play all those bar the last two, I think.
-
Pale Blue Dot
The Alien
Surrender To Reason
Home
Scarred
Lie
Lines in The Sand
The Glass Prison
Honor Thy Father
Panic Attack
I'd love to see the first third of "A View..." again, but I figure that's a longer shot than the other Mangini tracks on my list.
-
1. Octavarium. Long overdue and a great way to remember the days of a glorious past.
2. A Change of Seasons. This is an alternative for Octavarium, at least a bigass epic should be there for a reunion tour especially special.
3. The Glass Prison. Another fan favorite long overdue.
4. These Walls. Octavarium was criminally underrated in the Mangini era. Change that with a short, concise and beautiful song.
5. The Mirror. Being self serving here, I love the song. Now that MP is back he can do backing vocals again. "HYPOCRITE!!!!". "RrrrrrreeeesisTANCE!".
6. Trail of Tears. Masterpiece. I actually had written Peruvian Skies with FII in mind but then I realized this song is even better and probably James could sing it very good.
7. Wither. Never heard it live and it can be a nice cooling down moment.
8. Forsaken. Same as above, never heard it live and I reckon it was played only in Mangini's welcome tour.
9. Trascending Time. It's not unheard of that a band pays homage to an album by playing a song that was actually skipped in the tour for that album.
10. The Bigger Picture. Best song off the self titled.
-
You Not Me (seriously)
I've been blessed with seeing DT many times since 1999, and I heard everything I wanted to hear. 5 minutes dedicated to a song I never heard live (like most of us) and that I never really disliked would be fine for me.
-
I was thinking of which of my favorite songs I haven't seen live, but I'm pretty sure I've seem almost all of them. Also, I haven't seen DT since the self titled album tour, so I'd probably be happy with anything, but let's play along
1. Blind Faith - My favorite DT song. No need to explain this one
2. Lifting shadows off a dream - One of the most underrated songs from their catalogue IMO. Just a beautiful peace of music that I don't think I've seen live yet.
3. Goodnight Kiss - Another beautiful song that I haven't seen live.
4. The best of times - MP is back in the band and this should be on the menu. Another song I believe is very underated and beautiful.
5. Bridges in the sky - This song is one of the few that I really love from the MM era and I'd love to hear MP's take on the drums
6. Barstool Warrior - Another of the songs from the MM era that I really like and haven't had a chance to see live
7. The way it used to be - Maybe a bit hard for James, but a hidden gem in their catalogue.
8. Only a matter of time - I know this is not going to happen and that I'm in the minority, but this song is just amazing. If WDADU is represented I think this is the song that should do it.
9. Ocatvarium - I'll jump on this train. I got to see this one the first time I attended a DT concert and it was amazing. I wouldn't mind witnessing it yet again
10. Take away my pain - Same as #3
-
I'd love to see the first third of "A View..." again
Oh, me too! 💖 And the title song (ok, this whole thing is my #11 and 12). In fact anything from this album, regardless of it being so soon.
-
Octavarium.
That's it.
-
1. Hells Kitchen
2. Honor Thy Father
3. Learning to Live
4. Transcending Time
5. The Best of Times
6. Another Day
7. The Silent Man (Electric)
8. The Glass Prison
9. Burning My Soul
10. Viper King (Serious. I think this would make a great live banger)
-
Thank you to the band and Bosk for caring enough to ask us!
The first reunion show will be very special. Enthusiasm, emotion and raw energy will be off the charts. For this reason, I hope that the band decides to record it and make it available.
A Change Of Seasons
These Walls
Trial Of Tears
At Wits End
Honor Thy Father
Home
Pale Blue Dot
The Mirror
Learning To Live
Hells Kitchen
-
Thank you to the band and Bosk for caring enough to ask us!
Did Bosk say the band was asking or that he was sending the to his contacts?
-
I honestly don't care what they play.
But I do have two requests.
Keep the Mangini Era material in the set, and
THE KILLING HAND!!!!!
-
the glass prison
dissappear
octavarium
these walls
the way it used to be
space-dye vest
blind faith
pretty much doing a 6doit appreciation tour with the songs they usually leave out when it comes to playing songs from that album
-
Thank you to the band and Bosk for caring enough to ask us!
Did Bosk say the band was asking or that he was sending the to his contacts?
He was just sending to his contacts but I think the band cares.

OK, but it's not written as THE BAND WANTS TO KNOW...
That's all I'm saying.
That said, the "sending to my contacts" is quite hidden in the OP. This thread needs way more activity for it to make an impact I would think.

You're correct. I probably should have left out that sentence.

Nah it me probably being a dick. :lol
It would be awesome if the band would do a “fan’s choice” component to the set.
I wish they were actually asking.
-
1. Octavarium: yeah, hearing that big Moog solo live would be a treat. They could also jam up the intro.
2. ACOS: hearing it with MP back at the helm would be special.
3. Blind Faith: A personal favorite. James could struggle with the chorus, so if they sliced out the instrumental section from the middle and put it in a medley, that'd also be A-OK.
4. The Glass Prison: another favorite. Nothing else from the 12SS for me. (edit: it's a fear of mine that they'll play the suit in its entirety)
5. Breaking All Illusions: hearing this live brought me to tears one time. It could be even more emotional given the MP-factor.
6. Trial of Tears: on of their most interesting songs with a unique vibe.
7. You or Me: just do it!
8. Lines in the Sand: could also jam it up.
9. These Walls: short and sweet, DT needs to write more songs like this.
10. Enigma Machine: I gotta see what MP does with the drum solo.
-
1. Octavarium
2. This Dying Soul
3. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
4. Surrounded - WITH the Marillion/Floyd interlude
5. In The Name Of God - what a great vehicle for some band interplay, without trotting out something that's been played 1000 times
6. Voices
7. This Is The Life - a chance to cover multiple bases; it's a "Mangini era" song, and it would let James shine
8. Cover My Eyes - Because, why not? It's short, it's a nod to the faithful, and indicative that anything is on the table.
9. Someone else wrote it, but surprises; I love when they drop a cover in the middle of their song.
10. I'm not a skilled enough musician to pick one song, but one of those songs that lends itself to variation, either in 'time' or scope; I like when they play with their songs and give us something different than the "rote album note-by-note version".
-
1. Only a Matter of Time
2. The Killing Hand
3. Burning My Soul
4. Take Away My Pain
5. Disappear
6. The Great Debate
7. Far From Heaven
8. Behind The Veil
9. Status Seeker
10. The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun
Requesting all four tracks I haven't seen from WDaDU, an album I love. The rest are all album songs that have been played before, but I have yet to see them. I purposefully am not putting epics or songs they haven't played yet live, because I would imagine those tunes are already on the radar for potential play anyway.
SIDE NOTE: Does anyone know the last time they played two songs off of WDaDU at the same concert, other than March 6, 2004?
-
Can I use a slot or two for songs I hope they DON'T play? Asking for a friend.

You're joking, but on FB I saw a band asking seriously the question in preparation for their upcoming tour: "which song you DON'T want us to play and why?".
Maybe DT should do that as well, just to see the answers :D
-
That's interesting, but I was completely joking. I don't think DT should do anything like that to a group.
Just to me lol
-
Just wanted to say that while I appreciate ALL the feedback, to those posting in a form other than a ranked list, I cannot tally and score your choices, so they can't be included in the final list that gets sent to the band.
Well, "my contacts" = actual members of the band who will be deciding what to play, so take that as you will.
Can I use a slot or two for songs I hope they DON'T play? Asking for a friend.
Don't worry, I'm exercising my right to not include Hollow Years or Afterlife on the final list no matter how many votes they get. ;)
-
Well good thing I decided to switch out Hollow Years. :lol
-

Noted. ;D
I was just drawing a distinction between "passing it along" and "the band is asking".
-
And you are not wrong for picking that up and making that distinction.

Also noted. :lol
Seriously though, thank you for providing a voice.

Seconding that! 🙏✨

In full? Off the top of my head, I would guess the last show of the Evening of New Music tour DT did in Europe in 1997 - 1997/04/19 Bonn, Germany. In part, it would be the last time they played the When Images and Words Unite medley (featuring parts of AFiL and OaMoT) which was on 2000/08/27 in Mexico City.
Don't worry, I'm exercising my right to not include Hollow Years or Afterlife on the final list no matter how many votes they get. ;)
Afterlife, no problem. But HYears - even the extended live version? :omg:

Does my vote mentioning one song count, or should I throw in some more songs even though I'm really just here for that one?

Afterlife, no problem. But HYears - even the extended live version? :omg:
I really hate to say this in connection with anything DT-releted, but Hollow Years just is not a good song. An improved live guitar solo cannot save it.
Does my vote mentioning one song count, or should I throw in some more songs even though I'm really just here for that one?
I mean, I guess I can just count a #1 vote and that's it.

I knew I could count on you Scotty :-*
And yeah, that's kind of what I figured, that it would be around the Falling Into Infinity tour that they stopped playing multiple tunes from it. Damn shame, I say!
-
Well, its an easy start.
I decided to amend it, since some of my numbers have more than one choice. Per Bosk.
2. Surrender to Reason
4. Peruvian Skies.
-
Octavarium
Behind the Veil
S2N
ITPOE 2
The Bigger Picture
Moment of Betrayal
Viper King
The Path that Divides
This is The Life
Hell's Kitchen
-
Basically, bosk, ask 'em, nay!, tell 'em to play Octavarium. The rest is gravy :metal :lol
-
Octavarium.
That's it.
Okay, I read through this thread more carefully and realized that singling out one single song isn't going to do anything. ;D So here's my top ten:
1. Octavarium
2. Stream of consciousness
3. Breaking all illusions
4. Surrender to reason
5. Only a matter of time
6. Peruvian skies
7. Innocence faded
8. The Silent man
9. Beyond this life
10. The Ministry of lost souls
-
Basically, bosk, ask 'em, nay!, tell 'em to play Octavarium. The rest is gravy :metal :lol
Haha, truer words....... ✨
-
1. Octavarium (!!) - Probably my favorite DT song
2. The Glass Prison - They've almost entirely ignored SDOIT disc 1 since Portnoy left with the exception of playing TGD for half the ADTOE tour. And it's some of my favorite material by the band.
3. The Great Debate - -"-
4. Misunderstood - -"-
5. Blind Faith - -"-
6. Honor Thy Father - One of my favorites from TOT with a killer intro by Portnoy
7. Lines In the Sand - Great song that hasn't been played since 2008
8. Voices - Great song that hasn't been played since 2010
9. S2N - Fun song of Mangini era to yet have been played
10. Surrender To Reason - Fun song of Mangini era to yet have been played
And of course, their upcoming album in its entirety!
-
1. The Glass Prison
2. Lines in the Sand
3. Blind Faith
4. Octavarium
5. Speak to Me
6. Raise the Knife
7. Disappear
8. In the Presence of Enemies
9. The Way It Used To Be
10. At Wit's End
-
1. Learning To Live - It's my favourite DT song, and a top candidate for an epic setlist closer. Plenty of instrumental breaks to allow James some rest at the end of the set.
2. Stream Of Consciousness - Possibly the band's finest instrumental, and one that has not been played in two decades. That's just not right. Could be a great metaphor to emphasise the musical chemistry, the togetherness of the four instrumentalists.
3. Lines In The Sand - Another song that did not see any stage action in the Mangini years, and one I would definitely love to see sooner rather than later. Just be sure to bring back the "Baptised" pre-chorus!
4. Metropolis - As much as this song has been played to death in the past, it IS the quintessential DT piece. It belongs to any setlist that aspires to represent what the band has been, is and wishes to be in the future.
5. Goodnight Kiss - My favourite from SDOIT, has not seen the light since the Octavarium tour. It can play the role of the emotional centrepiece of the main set.
6. Breaking All Illusions - According to many the best song from its era, can be used to acknowledge MM's contribution to the history of the band.
7. These Walls/Panic Attack - Direct, catchy, great to pump the audience near the beginning of the show. Two songs for for all seasons.
8. Space-Dye Vest - As I said elsewhere, for me the greatest live revelation of the last decade. It's a song that had no business working so well as it did live, but somehow, it exceeded everyone's expectations, probably within the band as well.
9. To Live Forever - A great song in its own right, the perfect choice to pay tribute to the memory of Charlie Dominici.
10. Octavarium - An ideal candidate to close the set for a tour that promotes the band itself, rather than an album which may have its own embedded epic or closer. We haven't seen this live in its entirety in almost 20 years, it's time.
BONUS: The Root Of All Evil - An extremely strong set opener, could also serve as a nod to the 12 Steps Suite without having to play the whole thing.
-
Without getting into specific songs yet (i might do that in another post) just thinking realistically about it, a few things I would consider:
1. Probably one WDADU song since Dominici passed as a tribute, and also with MP returning it would feel logical having something from the first album
2. I think the focus will be on the new album but also the classic albums MP played a part in, would definitely expect most of the setlist to be that
3. But I do think there will be at least 1 (maybe 2) songs from the Mangini era, because he was there for 5 albums and it's too much material to completely overlook and it would also cause unnecessary drama within the fanbase if they ignored it completely
4. I would expect at least 2 classic songs as in among their most popular (whether thats Pull Me Under, Metropolis, Octavarium or whatever else) to show off them being back in full force with a bang
-
1. Probably one WDADU song since Dominici passed as a tribute, and also with MP returning it would feel logical having something from the first album
This triggered a though. Yes, a song from WDADU would be nice, but maybe a song from SFAM given that it was the first album recorded with this line up, OR a song from BC&SL since it was the last with this line up before MP's return.
If they play a song from BC&SL, I would take any of them except ANTR.
-
I was thinking it would be kind of cool/different if they played the opener of every album. I don't think any band has ever done that before.
-
reading learning to live as a suggestion many times over (i dismissed IW completely for ideas for the upcoming tour) i was thinking that JLB could come out for the F# whoa, but instead of trying it himself, encourage the audience to sing it! That would be engaging, but also keep him from trying "the thing" from the past and failing.
also love the suggestion of To Live Forever as a tribute to Charlie. That song is the first one i heard from DT actually, would be nice to finally hear it live!
-
I can't help noticing that almost EVERY post has mentioned Octavarium! 😁✨✨✨✨

I feel like getting something from Scenes almost feels like a given. It's the most classic album they released with this lineup so surely something from it will be played. Getting something from BCSL feels a little bit less likely but I could see it happen for the reasons you say. However I dont think they would play one of the epics from it and maybe they would do one of the shorter songs?
Considering Awake is celebrating 30 years this year I feel like surely something from it will be played? I know they did a lot of it for the 25 (?) anniversary but just playing one song from it would tick off both "play something from the classic DT era" and also "play something from Awake for the 30 years anniversary".
-

Interesting idea, but I wonder how well that would work. Some of those songs only feel right if they open or close a show. Having some of them in the middle would just be weird.
-

Yep. They only ever played it on that tour.
I saw it then, so it's not a bucket list song for me or anything. It's just awesome, and it's been way too long.
-

DT did it on a lot of shows on the I&W tour. :)

I think emtee means a setlist consisting of AFiL, PMU, 6:00, NM, etc. all in one setlist - not different opening bands.

I'm sorry, but I think the Octavarium album, and the song itself, are some of Dream Theater's most derivative works. I know I'm in the minority, but it's how I feel. I mean, that title track, they completely ripped off Kansas in one section, not to mention other bands. I don't find it creative and enjoyable.

I love 8V when it came out. It's largely responsible for becoming a hardcore fan even though I'd been listening to them somewhat casually for 5 years at that point. I think the accessibility of that album helped finally break the prog barrier I put up in my brain to fully enjoy all sides, not just the metal and the mellow.
That said, I mostly agree with you. The two songs I love off that album were the only two I didn't care for at first. The rest that I loved right off the bat I'm kinda "meh" about now

Which bit ripped off Kansas?
Not denying your claim. Just curious because I never made that connection while listening.

I'd have to go back and listen to both tracks, but a part of Kansas' "Magnum Opus" is fully repeated by "Octavarium." Could be the very end. I forget, it has been at least a decade since I played the latter.

Not only do I agree with this, but I also loved the Top 10 you just put out. Seems like we have similar taste.
Octavarium has grown on me over the years (I absolutely hated it when it came out) but its definitely derivative and not in a good way as the bands they chose to emulate like U2 and Muse are not why I fell in love with Dream Theater. I feel like this is the album when they started to lose steam as a band.
The title track is good but overrated by many and I certainly didn't include it on my top 10 to play here.

I noticed that on the first leg of the D/T tour, the setlist contained five album openers.

I'd never heard Magnum Opus so I just listened. There's nothing there, as far as I can tell, that is "fully repeated" in Octavarium. Maybe a hint of a bit around the six or seven minute mark if I squint really hard? Like super hard and also pop some cotton wool in my ears?
-
I could have the song wrong. It has been many years. But there is a section that is totally ripped off from a Kansas song.
Whatever, I could care less what people think. I realize my opinion about Octavarium, both the album and song, are in the minority.

Yeah...I'm very familiar with both tunes. There's some stylistic similarity, but I've never noticed anything that I thought was actually lifted from MO into 8VM. I'll give MO a listen later today.
-
The end of Octavarium is similar to the end of Kansas's The Wall, if memory serves.
-
There's a run of climbing notes around 4m35 in that one that's similar to a run at the end of Octavarium. Only a few seconds, though, and I imagine it's something that's appeared at the end of a thousand progrock epics.
-
1. Lifting Shadows off a Dream
2. Speak to me
3. Take away my pain
4. Misunderstood
5. The Great Debate
6. Never Enough
7. At Wits End
8. A New Beginning
9. Ministry of lost souls
10. Octavarium

In that case, I want to go back and rank my list:
1. Scarred
2. The Glass Prison
3. Lie
4. Surrender To Reason
5. Lines in The Sand
6. Pale Blue Dot
7. The Alien
8. Home
9. Honor Thy Father
10. Panic Attack
[11. A View From The Top of The World 😁]
-
01. Illumination Theory - This song is a colossus - The rhythms are so fun and every time I listen to this song I love it even more. If the boys practice it hard, it could be such a majestic performance. MP would be all over those very heavy and dramatic riffs and piano. I think he would have a lot of fun with this one. And that massive fill before the first verse! We love you MM.. As for the middle section: I would be fine leaving it as is, or if the band decided to take some creative liberties to perform it in a new way.
02. The Glass Prison - Hasn't been played in soo long, and what better way to show MP is back?!
03. The Shattered Fortress - First time this was played live was 2014, which means MP has never played it with DT. We need to see that! Also, TGP/TSF back-to-back would be a nice nod to the Suite without having to play the entire thing.
04. A Life Left Behind/My Last Farewell - Apologies for grouping two songs. These songs are massive. It's beautiful to imagine MP playing that proggy intro and smiling during the verses/chorus. MLF is short but hits so hard. The syncopation, RIPPING JR solo, crawling JP riffs all over the place, and a theatrical JLB performance.
05. Surrender To Reason - A very special song and a vibe not captured on any other DT track. Never been played live. I think MP would add some amazing touches to the Rush-sounding intro, heavy riffs, cymbal work during the chorus, and more. We need to see JP perform this solo! Vocals are beautiful and not too straining on JLB.
06. S2N - Extremely fun yet intricate song. Never been played live. Would be great to see JP/MP (maybe JR?!) help with vocals. Dat outro..
07. Stream Of Consciousness - I would love to see the boys play this eery tune, especially without a click track. Feeding off each others energy, trudging their way through that middle section together, coming out triumphant at the end.
08. The Alien - This song is cemented into DT history for winning the Grammy. It's full of energy and I would love to see MP's take on it.
09. Lie - Really, really fun song. Classic DT showcasing all band members and ends with John, John, and Mike going crazy.
10. These Walls - One of the most beautiful DT songs. So easy to put on and listen to. A calmer song which allows MP to shine on those gentle verses, and that dramatic outro is too good.
Honorable mention:
One Last Time
Here is a setlist using the tracks above & some new album tracks. I believe it would work beautifully in terms of balancing the pacing/speed of the songs, taking the audience on an emotional ride, giving the band members breaks, and hitting different eras past and present.
Songs grouped together would be played with very little, if any, break between them. The songs sound awesome flowing into one another, check it out :) . Spaces between the song groups would give time for applause, or as much time as the band wanted to rest, switch guitars, talk to the crowd, etc.
Setlist:
New album: Single or Album Opener track
Lie
S2N
The Glass Prison
The Shattered Fortress
A Life Left Behind
My Last Farewell
New album: Shorter track
Stream of Consciousness
One Last Time
These Walls
The Alien
Surrender To Reason
Illumination Theory
New album: Longer track
New album: Encore track

1. A Change of Seasons (Still easily the best DT epic IMO.)
2. These Walls
3. The Glass Prison
4. Surrounded
5. Lifting Shadows
6. Honor Thy Father
7. At Wit's End
8. Under a Glass Moon
9. Afterlife (A tribute for Charlie)
10. Raise The Knife (Longshot, but still would be so cool.)
-
I think it'd be funny to put 10 Mangini songs but I'll be more sincere here.
1. Octavarium. It's their best epic, one of the songs that got me into the band, and their attempts at 20+ epics since have really fallen flat in comparison.
2. At Wit's End. The best Mangini-era song, and the one song from this era that stands toe-to-toe with their all-time classics.
3. Afterlife. There should be a Dominici tribute but I hope they tune down for James.
4. Home. WOMP WOMP
5. On the Backs of Angels. I've always really liked this one and I still come back to it. So 🤷🏼♂️
6. These Walls. Another 8vm song that got me into the band. It'd be really cool to see this one.
7. Barstool Warrior. It was really refreshing to hear an old-Marillion-style prog song on a modern DT album. Doesn't hurt that it's really strong.
8. Hollow Years extended. I've seen it before but it's good enough for seconds. Way to take an okay song and elevate it live!
9. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu.
10. The Glass Prison. I'm hesitant to wish for anything JLB has to belt but I needed some 6DoiT rep on this list and it's one of my favorites.
-
3. Afterlife. There should be a Dominici tribute but I hope they tune down for James.
Good call, I hope they'll do a Charlie tribute on the next tour. I wonder if they'll consider doing a WDADU medley, or if JP will put his foot down on medleys :lol
-

You're right. That's what I was thinking of.
-
Yeah, there needs to be a WDADU medley in Charlie's honor. I feel stupid I forgot that. It has to be done.
And tuned down, as someone suggested, so James can get those notes. I hope they do honor Charlie, IMO. Let us applaud the work he was a part of.
-
- Octavarium as an encore would be absolutely badass
- Afterlife (RIP Charlie)
- In the name of God.
- Metropolis
- The Path that Divides or New Beginning from TA
- The Glass Prison
- Lie
- The Dark Eternal Night
- Home (my wife's fav)
-
Ranked by how much I already want to see it on the next tour:
1. Space-Dye Vest. The 2014 tour never came closer to 8 hours away from me and I would have liked to have seen that.
2. Octavarium. Blink twice and it will be 2025 (god help us all). They have to play this.
3. Blind Faith. One of my favorite less played DT songs. It's time.
4. Afterlife. Tribute to Charlie.
5. Breaking All Illusions. The essential song of the MM era.
6. The Best Of Times. Everyone wants to be blinded by tears during that guitar solo.
7. Learning To Live. I personally want to be blinded by tears during this outro.
8. Status Seeker. My actual favorite song with Charlie, they'd probably go with Afterlife because he wrote the lyrics too, but have to put in a vote for the fave.
Everything else can either wait or I don't think it would be necessary to remind them of it.

Good tune, isn't it?
-
Good tune, isn't it?
I just have to read the title and I'll be walking around singing it for the next couple of hours, as I am doing right now.
-
Yeah, there needs to be a WDADU medley in Charlie's honor. I feel stupid I forgot that. It has to be done.
And tuned down, as someone suggested, so James can get those notes. I hope they do honor Charlie, IMO. Let us applaud the work he was a part of.
I just had a thought about that. They could do "To Live Forever" in tribute to Charlie (first song written after WDaDU) and I would think it would still be relatively comfortable for James. Especially the '94 version.
-
I think I want to see them pay tribute to the past and relive some of the old vibes but I also don't want them to totally diverge from the DT of the last 10 years. I picked songs I like that I have not seen live, but that I like...and with respect to the MM-era I picked songs that I think Mike Portnoy would do well with.
1. Glass Prison
2. Octavarium
3. S2N
4. Out of Reach
5. Surrender to Reason
6. Blind Faith
7. Lines in the Sand

9. Change of Seasons
10. Surrender to Reason

2. A Vision
3. Afterlife
4. S2N
5. Honor Thy Father
6. The Best of Times
7. Lost Not Forgotten
8. The Bigger Picture
9. Wait for Sleep
10. Where Are You Now?
-
I think Charlie's tribute should be Status Seeker or Afterlife, because he helped to wrote them.
If a summer tour happens before the new album release, I don't see they playing any MM era songs (although I would love to see that). I think it will be all about MP returning to the band and the previous history for their first tour back together.

I tried to consider what they might actually play/what James would actually sing(meaning I don't think they will play Illumination Theory because it's a Mangini era epic that would take up a large part of the setlist or something like Innocence Faded because James would struggle with that)
1. Octavarium
2. Transcending Time
3. The Glass Prison
4. Hell's Kitchen/
5. Lines in the Sand
6. The Great Debate
7. These Walls
8. Constant Motion
9. Honor Thy Father
10. Blind Faith
Also, I imagine Bosk going up to the band with the list and being "alright so here's the top 10 songs, but the forum really wants to see Octavarium. Like, really wants to see it - as in I think every list had Octavarium."
-
THIS would be a setlist I PERSONALLY would love to see on a pre-new album REUNION tour:
1. Metropolis, Pt.1
2. Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu
3. Voices
*welcome crowd & MP back into the fold
4. The Glass Prison
5. Raw Dog
6. Only A Matter of Time
*talk about Charlie Dominici & dedicate the next song to him
7. Take Away My Pain *acoustic
8. Wither *acoustic
9. Constant Motion
10. In the Name of God
encore:
11. Octavarium
-
My wish list will always consist of songs I have not seen live before. Hope other fans will have a craving for some of these as well. In order of my preference:
1. Wither
2. Raw Dog (let's pick up where MP left off)
3. You Or Me (Demo Version is better anyway and much more singable for James)
4. Disappear
5. Anna Lee
6. Cover My Eyes (bring this short nugget back!!)
7. Viper King
8. Vacant
9. Behind the Veil
10. Transcending Time

It's basic a fantastic set but you had to completely ruin it with Raw Dog :lol I'd take You Not Me over that song. Any other instrumental will do.

For me, it's a song that's NEVER BEEN PLAYED, so that makes it very desirable!
-
My very epic list:
1. Octavarium - I'm like, 90% confident this will be the encore on the next tour. It matches what they've been doing a lot on recent tours (ACOS as the encore in 2017, The Count of Tuscany as the encore in 2022), so I think it's just a natural progression. Plus, it's LONG overdue, it's pretty much the most requested live song, and it would be absolutely perfect with the 20th anniversary soon and the reunion of the classic lineup, as this song perfectly encapsulates that whole era of the band.
2. I expect WDADU to get some sort of representation. I'd go with the classic Ytse Jam.
3. In the Name of God - Long overdue.
4. S2N - I doubt it'll get played on the next tour, but I hope it does at some point. It definitely deserves it.
5. Surrender to Reason - Same as above.
6. Home - A good classic Dream Theater staple, almost feels like a given with Portnoy being back.
7. The Glass Prison - Long overdue, would be an awesome opener.
8. Surrounded - We need at least one ballad, this one seems to go over well when it's played.
9. Raise the Knife - A longshot, I know, but if this tour is going to coincide with their 40th anniversary, I think an archival piece would be great and, to be quite honest, I just love this song a ton.
10. Metropolis - Dream Theater classic.
Some other notes: I think In the Presence of Enemies (the full piece) will get played as an encore in the near distant future, but not on this tour. It and Octavarium are two of the epics that are still in need of representation as of recently. I expect this tour to be a consisting of mostly songs off the new album mixed with pre-2011 songs and I think there'll be a mix of classic staples (Home, Ytse Jam, Metropolis, etc.) mixed with some more "deep cuts." I think that's the way to go for tours like this.
-
I expect WDADU to get some sort of representation. I'd go with the classic Ytse Jam.
I like your list except this. I think that the only reason they would do anything from WDADU would be to honor Charlie, which means they wouldn't do the instrumental.
Just a guess.
-
I fully expect them to never play Raise the Knife again. Written by MP as an "anti-band-member-who-left-the-band" song, it has struck me as very hypocritical since 2010, and would be very strange for them to play even though he's back in the band now.
-
1. The Glass Prison (5)
2. Blind Faith (1)
3. These Walls (2)
4. Surrender to Reason (8)
5. Constant Motion (10)
6. S2N (9)
7. The Answer Lies Within (7)
8. Only a Matter of Time (4)
9. In the Name of God (6)
10. The Best of Times (3)
The brackets indicate my personal ranking but I also wanted to arrange the song order just for fun. I’m assuming this is a hypothetical MP returning summer setlist prior to DT16 release in late 2024/early 2025. I think Octavarium title track would be great as the encore for a potential DT16 “evening with” tour, which is why it was not included.
-
Tbh I just wanna see them play Breaking All Illusions, Shaman's Trance and maybe one of the Mangini era singles with MP.
-
The brackets indicate my personal ranking but I also wanted to arrange the song order just for fun.
But Bosk wanted a ranked list so he's gonna consider The Glass Prison the highest one and The Best of Times the lowest one :D
-
1- 12 step suite
2- Octavarium
That's it.
-
1- 12 step suite
I'd be shocked if this was part of an album cycle tour, but if they go out this summer, I can see it possibly getting played. Even JP on the summer tours liked to feature a song from each album, and the 12 SS covers 5 albums right there.
-
1 - Octavarium
2 - illumination theory
3 - lifting shadows off a dream
4 - The glass prison
5 - Home
6 - In the name of god
7 - The killing hand
8 - Trail of tears
9 - Learning to live
10 - S2n
If those songs were on the set I’d be extremely happy lol
-
As long as it's good and heavy, I don't really care. Some songs I hope are not in the set list; PMU, TSCO and Metropolis.
-
(EDIT: Didn't understand the assignment. ;D)
-
Apologies for being late to the party here. Hope I haven't missed the boat.
1. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu - don't think you could top this as the first thing that gets played on the return of this particular lineup
2. A Fortune in Lies - another potential opener, signifying both a new beginning and potentially as a tribute to Charlie
3. Two Far - because I feel like this particular setlist needs some kind of callback to where it all started. Feel free to replace this slot with another tune from the Majesty Demos, but seeing as Another Won was played at Score and Your Majesty made an appearance during the ToT tour (I think? It was on the Lifting Shadows bonus disc...)
4. The Glass Prison
5. The Killing Hand - long overdue a return and could be another option for the Charlie tribute. Would also be cool to hear how they approach it in 2024 given that they would almost always put a new spin on it for every tour it got played
6. Sleeping Giant - this is the one MM era song I would pick above all others for a chance to hear MP's interpretation. Listening to the record it strikes me as something he'd be more than comfortable picking up
7. In the Name of God - again, long overdue
8. Oh, go on then... Octavarium
9. Home
10. Metropolis
-
Stream of Consciousness because it's one of my favorite rock instrumentals ever, and they never play it.
I don't even LOVE The Glass Prison (I get a little bored around halfway through it) but it would be a great opener for MP's return.
And that's it! Looking forward to hearing the new stuff though.
-
So the question I have is since they are putting out new material and they need to promote it, how many songs from the new era, how many songs from the MM era and how many from the MP era?
I say based on the list above:
New - 4
MM - 3
MP - 3
That would be a pretty long set requiring an "Evening With" and an intermission. They could even do an LTE song. John Myung could learn any LTE song.
-

All of this 💯 They would do well to keep things balanced.
-
I'll admit to being a bit out of the loop; my tastes started to drift away from DT shortly after BC&SL, then when MP left I just didn't listen all that much to the new stuff. Him rejoining them has me excited again though. As I'm out of the loop, and assuming they will continue to play some Mangini-era stuff live, what are the sort of 'fan favorites', if you will, of the Mangini albums?
-
1. Surrender to Reason - As many have said, incredible song that hasn't been played live yet. Needs to be heard
2. Outcry - They've don BITS....Outcry is a killer song as well
3. Illumination Theory - It was MP's playlist while they were still not even publicly speaking....gotta here him play it
4. In The Name of God -
5. The Glass Prison - Obvious Reasons
6. Any When Dream and Day Unite Song - Pick one and do it
7. Blind Faith - One of my favs...great song...
8. Lines in the Sand
9. Learning to Live
10. Voices -
-
They will not play 3 MM-era songs, at least initially. I can see one or maybe two at a stretch.

I can’t tell what list you’re referring to. That’s only 10 songs?
-
Could we ask the higher powers to get the LNFA back, Bosk? ;D But thank you for doing this! I'm very late to the party here, but I guess it's worth the shot anyway.
Here's my list in reverse chronological order:
1. Transcending Time
2. S2N
3. Surrender to Reason
4. Raw Dog
5. The Best of Times
6. Octavarium
7. Stream of Consciousness
8. The Glass Prison
9. Voices
10. The Killing Hand
I really don't care much about "classics" or "fan favorites", just give me a varied set with great songs that haven't been played in a while and I'll be happy.
*Bonus mention: I don't know if medleys will ever come back, but I guess it'd be really interesting to see a half-Illumination Theory half-AVFTTOTW thing, since I don't think they'll ever play those in full again, but a mix of both? That might do.
-

A Dramatic Turn of Events - I see Breaking All Illusions listed all the time as people's favorite. My personal faves are Bridges in the Sky, Beneath the Surface, and Outcry.
Dream Theater - Personally, I love The Enemy Inside. Surrender to Reason gets a lot of talk too.
The Astonishing - I see this album get mostly maligned, though I think it's great. I think most people would say Moment of Betrayal is a banger though. I really like Our New World (which has a video/was a single).
Distance Over Time - I like Fall Into the Light and Barstool Warrior. Other well liked tracks are At Wit's End and Pale Blue Dot, though I don't care for PBD.
A View From the Top of the World - The Alien won a Grammy, so I could see that coming back. Transcending Time is the only that hasn't been played, so maybe that'll change. This is my least favorite DT album, though.
-
They will not play 33 MM-era songs, at least initially. I can see one or maybe two at a stretch.
I agree with this. Still, no problem with them being listed in this thread, of course.

I agree that “one or maybe two at a stretch” is the most likely outcome. They will play one or two to acknowledge the era and make the point that they don’t consider those songs off-limits going forward but ultimately, the bulk of set lists are going to be to focussed on what this particular lineup feels comfortable playing together - so a combination of the stuff they recorded together and new material…
For a similar reason, whilst I put TGP on my wishlist on the previous page, I don’t realistically expect it. That song is otherworldly technical and demanding even by the DT benchmark. Will the guys really think it’s worth putting in the extra rehearsal time for the sake of that or any other particular song? I can’t see it… but honesty I will be happy enough just to see this lineup back together playing whatever suits them, and I will be there in the front row irrespective of whether I end up having the setlist either fully or partially spoilt for me in advance…!
-
If they play an MM era song I doubt it will be because they feel the need to represent those albums. It will probably be because the band really enjoys playing it. Outside of this forum, the majority of fans are more excited about seeing Portnoy back playing the classic tunes and whatever new material they come up with. I doubt there is a major percentage of fans that are dying to hear Portnoy play ….Breaking All Illusions or whatever from the last decade. Nostalgia is a big part of this reunion.

Respectfully disagreeing. Not everyone wants "nostalgia", so let's look forward while including all eras of the band. Who wouldn't love to hear MP play Answering the Call, Moment of Betrayal, or Outcry with the band? I would, for one! There are many songs that I could see him bringing a new energy to that may, despite my earlier reservations, be scintillating.

Agreed. And it's a big part of the bands catalog which i really enjoy, it would be a shame to not hear these songs live again.
For some reason, i feel strongly about Bridges In The Sky as candidate, seems to be a favorite of the band, and stylistically sounds like something that's close to MP's playing.
On the other hand, at least for the first tour, i think they'll keep MM-era songs to a minimum.

Have you heard Temple of Circadia on Terminal Velocity, it's quite similar to BITS.

Yeap, pretty similar riff

Yeap, pretty similar riff
When I first the song, it made me think that BITS would be a great song to hear MP play if he rejoins DT. Even though they played it live recently, I wouldn't mind hearing it again since it's an excellent live song.
The energy of BITS is why I also wouldn't mind, and kind of want to hear Raw Dog live. It has a drive and energy that I think would come across well in a live setting. They could also just go all out soloing at the end since it doesn't have a proper ending that is available. Would they still be able to use that ending they originally had planned with those 'God of War' samples because that would be pretty cool.
-
Nostalgia is a big part of this reunion.
I don't know about that. Those albums without MP have some huge detractors, who are all going to show up anyway to see MP regardless of what they play. Then there is a bigger number of huge fans who are definitely going to be disappointed if they skip over those albums. Then there's the biggest number, the majority of DT fans, who don't have strong negative or positive opinions on the albums but would enjoy hearing some of the modern classics, and the most negative of them probably wouldn't be opposed to hearing a couple of the best songs.
Outside of us fans, there's also JP, JR, JLB and JMX who are all happy and excited to have MP back but who probably don't feel like they've just been spinning their wheels waiting for his return. There's also the fact you'll always feel more of a connection to your classic albums and your formative years, but outside of their true formative years, who knows, maybe they have more of an emotional tie to the songs they made for the first Mangini album than the ninth or tenth MP album, seeing how it was a new beginning for them? And then we have MP who said he's not opposed either.
-
I am not particularly keen on much of the MM-era material, but I would be genuinely excited to hear MP's take on some of those songs in a live setting.

The last 3 MP albums also have some huge detractors. I don't think we know how anyone but JP feels about MP back in the band because we don't know how those discussions unfolded.
I have to agree with Trav. This whole thing is very much about nostalgia. There are other factors but I find it hard to believe that at the core of this whole change is not a sense of 'hes finally back!'. Fans called for over a decade for him to return, they blamed his absence for allegedly rigid and predictable shows, they complained about lack of fan engagement without him...and now is their retribution. He's back to right everything wrong about the darkness of the MM era, to them. Read the Facebook and YouTube comments. The sentiment is unavoidable there. For a lot of fans just having the old line up on stage ripping through the old stuff is like South Park's Randy at the computer gif.
I am personally a tale of two cities on things. It's the worst of DT times but potentially the best of DT times. We could get a total let-down of an album. We could get one of the best albums because there really is something at stake here. I can only speak for myself, but I don't want to hear them just replay old hits. I have high hopes for the music they're just written and are going to write.
-
Nostalgia is our issue right now, have to wait to hear the new music to see if it’s theirs too.
1. At Wit’s End
2. Octavarium
3. The Shattered Fortress
4. In the Name of God
5. Learning to Live
6. Untethered Angel
7. A Life Left Behind
8. The Glass Prison
9. Blind Faith
10. Constant Motion
-
1) Octavarium. This song is too good to not have been played in so long. At this point I get if they want to wait until next year for the 20th anniversary, but if the calendar flips to 2026 and DT hasn't made this a feature of one of their tour setlists then they done fucked up.
2) The Glass Prison. I don't know if DT will ever do a "full 12SS" tour given that Mike scratched that itch with The Shattered Fortress, but at the very least tey should bring back the best part of it.
3) Breaking All Illusions. The MM era should continue to be represented in the live setlists going forward, and this is the best them :metal
4) Peruvian Skies- This song rules live, and it's been a long time since it was a regular (in the US at least).
5) Blind Faith- Another Six Degrees gem that's been on the shelf for too long.
6) Erotomania- Fully understand that Voices may be out of James's range at this point, but if the full AMBI suite is off the table then this instrumental at least shouldn't.
7) Barstool Warrior- Another top notch MM era song that should remain in the repertoire.
8) Afterlife- A good song and would be a nice tribute to Charlie
9) S2N- An underappreciated song from D/T. Also, I want to here Mike doing the Owen Wilson soundclip live :lol
10) Constant Motion- Not a great song, but a fun song, and Mike is back to cover his copious backing vocals.

The bolded part intrigues me. I would love to hear actual reasons why the 5 albums without MP have huge detractors AS A WHOLE. Because they all sound pretty different from each other. ADTOE is nothing like TA which is nothing like DoT. I fail to see the criticism that would be consistent against each of those 5 albums unless someone had an entrenched anti-MM bias?
-
Some people just didn't want to even conceive the idea of MP-less DT.
-
@Bosk: when you will eventually pass on the list, would it be too much to ask for some generic comment or feedback from the band? I'm not meaning "Cool, you can be sure we'll play Octavarium and The Glass Prison", but some generic reaction, something like "the band appreciated the list and found it intriguing", "they are genuinely surprised it wasn't all Metropolis / Pull Me Under / Strange Deja Vu", etc etc something generic and vague to see if they were expecting the top 10 songs?

+1, if possible. the reaction of the band as they hear the picks would be awesome. maybe they can film them as if they're reaction videos on youtube (moon shot request, lol)

The DT response we deserve:
"Meh, it's DTF by the numbers with some uninspired noodling and posters past their prime. Couldn't they hire someone from devintownsendforums.com for better production?"
-

I mean, that's what it was :lol they found out the hard way the secret ingredient they wanted in DT was Mike Portnoy and that was it.

Nostalgia is a big part of this reunion.

"Modern classics"? Are there those?
I KID! I KID!
I like your post though; I'm in that "bigger group"; not opposed to anything they want to play.

9) S2N- An underappreciated song from D/T. Also, I want to here Mike doing the Owen Wilson soundclip live :lol
:lol MP would be perfect for that!
-
Heh, didn't properly read the first post. Let's try this again:
1. Blind Faith
2. Lines in the Sand
3. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
4. Honor Thy Father
5. Misunderstood
6. Sleeping Giant
7. Bridges in the Sky
8. Hollow Years
9. The Glass Prison
10. Erotomania

I didn't think of the "wow" in a live setting but that would be really cool :metal

I always did, but with the crowd saying it. (hopefully most would be in the know) The timing though....
I also thought the crowd would hum Waooaoo, from Sleeping Giant, but..no.

Thank you! I do remember listening to Breaking all Illusions and thinking it was very good. I'll probably give all those albums a spin but with a particilar focus on the tracks you mentioned. Preesh!

We recently did a DT songs countdown (1-100). Here are the top Mangini-era songs (let me know if the album name acronyms aren't clear):
- Breaking All Illusions (#8 overall) (ADTOE)
- Bridges in the Sky (23) (ADTOE)
- Illumination Theory (25) (DT12)
- At Wit's End (37) (DOT)
- A View from the Top of the Word (49) (View)
- Barstool Warrior (52) (DOT)
- On the Backs of Angels (56) (ADTOE)
- Outcry (58) (ADTOE)
- The Bigger Picture (60) (DT12)
- Pale Blue Dot (62) (DOT)
The highest-ranked song from The Astonishing was A New Beginning at #91.
-
I agree with those being the best of that era. If they decided to play an MM track, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were one of those.
-
I guess I can’t complain about the setlist if I don’t give this a go
Overture 1928 / Strange Déjà vu – good as the opener or first song after intermission
The Glass Prison – not a favorite, but I know of it’s strong appeal. Again, a good concert opener or right after the intermission.
Breaking All Illusions – a given
Misunderstood – one of my favorite visual performances of the band back in ’08.
As I Am
Metropolis
One song from D/T (S2N, Fall Into The Light, At Wit's End)
Constant Motion
One WDADU song (preferrably ‘Ytse jam’)
If they don’t perform 8vm due to time constraints and room for the new songs, at least end the concerts with ‘The Razor’s Edge’. Please!

They do all sound preeeetty different from each other, but for me, the self-titled and Astonishing killed so much interest in the band for me I didn't check out D/T until they had already played in my town that tour and I missed it. The songs just weren't there, and the Astonishing in particular could have been a bad but bearable one-disc album and instead it's two discs and unbearable. View is fine, but not great. Definition of a mid by-the-book album.
ADTOE has not aged as well for me as a whole (even though I loved it on release) but has some modern classics for sure. D/T actually stands toe-to-toe with their classic stuff because the songs were there, they kept themselves from filling out a whole 80 minutes, and they nailed the mix of prog and metal.
Mangini is not as engaging a drummer as MP, but to be fair MP was not as engaging a drummer after Octavarium either. But the difference in drum parts really is night and day even comparing BC&SL or SC to ADTOE or D/T.
So, make of that what you will, but it's not just "no MP."
-
I listened to the self-titled on my bike ride this morning. The processing on James's voice and the awful sound of the drums just kill the album for me. The faith stuff doesn't help on top of that, either. And, broadly speaking, I agree the songs "just weren't there".
-
I can't say I'm a detractor, per se, as there are plenty of songs on the five records that I really enjoy, and I've seen them more in that era than in the pre-Mangini era. But in terms of sitting down and enjoying an album, I almost always - well, always - go to the MP era.
FOR ME - and I am only expressing MY opinion here - the MP albums had wankery under the guise of songs and melody and concept. I found the wankery in the last five records to be more unabashed, and straightforward, and I missed that melding. There are too many songs in the last five records where I'm distracted by the pure technicality as opposed to admiring it. I don't listen to music to listen to an Olympic event. There is at least ONE song on every one of the last couple records where I'm like "are we getting paid by the note here?" and to be a little unfair, but it's the way I feel, that is most often directed at Mangini, and within that, most often directed at the bass drum. It just feels like every album has more moments of "a world record 7,824,921 bass drum hits in 30 seconds", and I'm looking for more moments of "however many bass drum hits it takes to get the emotion across".
I'm not looking to (re)start any arguments, here, it's just what I hear for better or worse.
-
One of the reasons I'm excited about MP's return is that I hope his playing of the MM-era songs in their live shows might allow me to start enjoying those songs. I'm sure there are some great songs from the MM era, if you can look past the atrocious drum sound... but I can't get past the atrocious drum sound, and I can't stand listening to these albums.
So, I would love to experience something like Breaking All Illusions with MP on drums, and for me to be blown away by it in a way that the studio recordings never managed.

I like this, at least philosophically (I don't think it was all "just" the drum sound, but I'll leave it at that.)

I would recommend the live versions. MM's drums sounded better on their live albums (IMO) than on the studio albums.

I don't have a problem with the drum sound. But if you do, I see your point. That said, I would hope that nobody ever has to experience Breaking All Illusions again. There are 68 better songs in the MM era that I would prefer to hear.

Well, it may not be the drum sound, but I can see how someone would like to see MP and his style interpret those songs.
Especially Breaking All Illusions. ;D

....except they never originally planned on doing a live release for that tour, having just done live releases for the previous 2 tours. When they finally decided to do a release, they ended up using pro-shot footage by other companies (in other words, permitted by the band but not officially sanctioned) and there were 6 shows that were filmed, so that's what MP had to choose from to make up that release. Why he chose that specific performance of Schmedley Wilcox, I don't know, but IIRC, he did the same thing at plenty of shows (but not every one).

I remember the Vancouver show specifically being announced as being filmed. I thought it was announced beforehand but this sounds like it was after the fact.

Interesting. If I saw that post, I had forgotten about it, so thanks for posting the link. No Regardless, IIRC, the other 5 shows were all shot independently of the band, but they were given the footage, which is what CiM was based upon.

??? No it isn't.

Anyway Bosk, since it might have gotten lost in the shuffle, I humbly suggest it again: would it be out of the realms of possibility, once you pass the list to the band, to get some comment about it? I'm not expecting "k we'll play Octavarium and The Glass Prison since you asked for it", but something more vague, a general comment if they expected those songs, if they were pleasantly surprised, if their reaction it's just "I was sure it would have been all Metropolis, Pull Me Under and As I Am"....?

"Out of the Ashes" makes me think of a Phoenix, which is a metaphor for the subject feeling a sense of being renewed. Their outlook has shifted to be more positive and optimistic.
I actually don't see this song as being religious at all.

He said he was inspired by the Boston Marathon bombing. It’s about picking yourself up and persevering. Bad things happen but you have to hope for the best, or else what’s the point.
-
My point was less "ha ha see that other guy was right" and more "when the lyrics specifically mention nothing being faith and we know JP is religious, it's not a stretch for someone to make." Art, open to interpretation, yadda yadda yadda.

What if the very first song in the setlist was--
Pull Me Under (the demo version)
DT returns to this seminal track, but with the original Erotomania section in tact. This version has never been played live before. It would be a mighty surprise and "I'm back" statement from MP to have the most obscure version of their most famous song open the show. How Prog is that?

Yes, I agree. There are all sorts of faith-related bits and pieces throughout the album. I'll need to go through it again.
In the meantime I'd better look up the meaning of "necro nihilist"!

Love ya Gabe but nope, you're wrong!
Don't forget that originally BMS had a mellow beginning to open the song that mirrored the mellow instrumental section that later was turned into HK - similar to how Home has a mellow intro that is later mirrored during the notorious soundbits section before the keyboard solo. So it wasn't as if that instrumental section appeared completely out of the blue.
Needless to say, I prefer the BMS '96 over the album version. It helps that this was the first version of the song I heard from listening to Ff96 boots repeatedly while waiting for them to record and release FII. That all said, I love the anthemic ending of HK, which would never have been created had it not been separated into a different song, so it's a good concession.

Sorry Scotty. Much respect. But you're wrong! 😝😁
I'm one who heard the album version first. So, obviously that has an influence on why I like BMS and HK as they came to be. But to me, listening to the demo, BMS '96 just sounds like a mish-mash of riffs. Especially in that first and second verse. Then, after the 2nd chorus, they kill any momentum by dropping down to return to that quiet intro and go into this random soft section. Cool but very out of place.
Then, they kill that momentum to awkwardly go back into the chorus riff for the keyboard solo. I don't know. I think that was one instance where Kevin Shirley made the right call. The flow is way better in both on the album.
I have similar issues with the demo of "Lines in The Sand". But I've noticed they've reverted back to the original arrangement for that song live. So, I wonder if that case was a band decision as opposed to a Kevin Shirley decision. :justjen

I listened to much of FII a short while back, and that may be favorite part of the entire album.
-
Erotomania does not belong in Pull Me Under just like Hell's Kitchen does not belong in Burning My Soul.
Yeah...agree. PERHAPS I'd have thought differently had I heard the original version of Oliver's Twist first, but it is the most out-of-place thing I think I've ever heard. Same with BMS/HK. The original literally sounds like someone took an existing song and used Pro Tools to stick something that doesn't belong in the middle.
-
Sometimes, trimming a song down ends up being the right move, even with a band like DT where the longest songs are usually the most loved by the fans.
-
The original literally sounds like someone took an existing song and used Pro Tools to stick something that doesn't belong in the middle.
Kinda like Metropolis, BTL and TDEN?
-
I first heard the 96 version of Burning My Soul, well, live in 1996. But I do find the album version to be a more definitive presentation of those musical ideas.
And I agree that Erotomania doesn't technically belong in Pull Me Under. But back on topic, why not try something unexpected and fresh for the live version? DT is not adverse to playing demos of previously released songs. They brought back the BMS demo. And I'll never forget when they whipped out the demo version of Hollow Years for me and that one other guy that knew the extra verses. Its the VIP treatment for the super fan. And I like it.
-

Thought you were talking about Ministry of Lost Souls for a second here
-
Kinda like Metropolis, BTL and TDEN?
Those don't sound that way to me.
-
I always thought that original version of Pull Me Under sounded really clunky, even by the standards of other songs of theirs that go into big instrumental sections (several songs mentioned already). They did themselves a big favor getting rid of that section, and it works way better than in Erotomania. I guess it would be a cool bone to throw to the hardcore fans and those who don't know any better might just think it's some weird medley with Erotomania.
All that being said, I would really love to just see Erotomania and Voices come back.
-
Those don't sound that way to me.
Maybe not to you because that's the way you heard the songs for the first time. I remember hearing BTL and loving it until it got to the "Zappa" section, and then I was like WHAT THE....??!?!?!? I've gotten used to it, but for me, it sounds WAY more out of place than the mellow section in the middle of BMS ever did (again, don't forget the '96 version also has the mellow intro to start the song which is mirrored later, so it's not completely out of the blue).
-
Honestly, the original BMS always sounded like a work in progress. The decision to split it resulted in two reasonably decent tunes as opposed to something that didn't make any sense.
The original BMS felt like the band was really out of ideas and tried to craft something that just wasn't there.

Agreed
-
Some people complain about "forced diversity" in entertainment, well, in prog there can be also such a thing as "forced complexity". Tempo and mood changes in a song have to happen organically, sticking random parts together just for the sake of calling it a complex song doesn't do anything for me. It has to flow first and foremost, if power metal bands can make coherent 13 minutes songs, so can DT, actually DT should be the benchmark for how to structure songs and not expose themselves to "copy and paste" criticisms.
-
The only downside to splitting HK out of BMS is that you have to hit the "skip" button twice instead of just once.

You have a point.

In the minority here. I like BMS. I liked it better the more I listened to it. (who'da thunk with Dream Theater). Then, I liked it even more after I heard with HK.
In fact, I didn't really care for HK, until I heard it presented this way. :blush Now I like all of them.

As I've mentioned before, both are near the bottom of my rankings of DT songs, BUT:
-Regarding BMS, I think it would slay live, and I wouldn't mind seeing it in a set.
-HK is a nice intro piece for LITS, and I don't mind it in that context.

"Slay" might be a bit strong, but I hear you. The '05 version of JLMB was awesome live, with a slightly extended JR continuum solo.
HK, to me, is the kind of song the band could come back out for an encore with before blasting into a high energy song.
-
I would really, really, REALLY enjoy Hell's Kitchen if they played it. Would buy and put a nice bra in my concert bag to toss at them :lol

On BMS and HK...
I have said it before, but HK is one of my favorite DT instrumentals, and BMS is one of my least favorite songs on FII soooo...to me the "extraction" of the instrumental portion was perhaps the best production decision in those sessions. And I did hear the original version first, live, on the Pre-FII tour.
And going over Scotty's examples...Metropolis, well, yes, the instrumental section is a bit out of nowhere, but the young me in 1992 hadn't heard anything like it, so I fell in love with it regardless ;) As for BTL and TDEN...they are pretty far down my DT songs' ranking, so I guess it all more or less fits...

That bra was never enough.

Honor Thy Father: Would be amazing to see live! So heavy, angry, and so much energy! It was on my very first DT album.
Metropolis Pt. 1: One of my absolute favorites!
Misunderstood: Such a unique track. I love it, and I've never seen it in person.
Scenes is my favorite album, so...
The Dance of Eternity: Fun to watch! Fun to listen to!
The Spirit Carries On: Always amazing live!
Finally Free: A great outro. The return of the Portnoy drum solo at the end.
Bridges in the Sky: A banger from one of their best albums, DToE!
Stream of Conciousness: Great instrumental, also from my very first DT album. Gives me chills every time.
In The Presence of Enemies: I still remember the excitement hearing this for the first time and loving it!
Octavarium: A masterpiece!

when will the results be posted?
-
Good question. I've been debating whether to cut this off soon and try to get the results to the band sooner rather than later, or to wait a bit. Not currently decided.

I suppose it may depend on if there will be some sort of summer tour, which would have to be planned soonish, I would think.

It would be nice also to get a comment from them; not "K we'll play Octavarium and The Glass Prison since you asked", but more having a general feedback if they appreciated the songs we came up with and how different it was from their expectations :D

Yeah they gotta play some MM era stuff. I wouldn’t expect more than like 3 songs if anything though.

One can dream but I hope they'll play some oldschool and B-sides tunes like Eve, Speak To Me and Another Hand/The Killing Hand.

Pretty clear everyone notices how under-played SDoIT Disc 1 is. 4 of the 5 tracks here and I had the other on my list.

yeah it was my first "new" DT album and tour, though i'm happy i saw most of 6doit live, i'd kill for a live version of disappear
-

Yeah, I didn't include Misunderstood or Disappear on my list, but they'd still be a lovely surprise if they did break them out. The Great Debate would be cool too, though it's probably my least favorite of the five at this point.
-
Oh shit fuck that. This would piss me off to no end.
Wouldn't be surprised if they don't touch MM the first tour back but it'll be a real shame if MP goes full Frusciante and refuse to play non-MP stuff ever.

MP himself said that he'd be willing to play MM stuff if the rest of the band wanted to, although you get the sense that he would prefer to play stuff from his era (which is reasonable enough). But given that 1/3 of the current catalog is with MM and there are some great songs from that era, I think it's safe to say there will be at least a few of them that appear in the setlists.

Yes, and not to mention a lot of tunes from the first MP era are overplayed at this point. No way they’re ignoring a third of the catalog.

💯
-
Sure. But as this thread has shown, there is an entire setlist and more of songs from the (first) MP era that haven’t been played in over a decade.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if just in the first run of shows there's no MM material just because there's so much MP Mach 1 era material that they can choose from, but I don't think that would necessarily be indicative of the MM era being ignored in general.
-
To me, that's unacceptable.
-
I would guess there will be one song from the MM era on the setlist for the first DT tour with MP. Between the new material and older MP era stuff I would imagine they aren't thinking about much of the MM stuff at the moment
-

It depends how limited the setlist is. If they do something like they did on the DoT tour and play the entire new album in the second set, that'll only leave room for 6-8 more songs.
I'm not directing this at you HoSo, but JP did a great job of including MP Era tracks in the setlists. It feels like people are thinking nothing's been played since MP left. They've hit every album multiple times.
-
I would appreciate it if they include at least 5 Mangini era songs in the setlist. I wouldn't mind either if they included just the singles.
There are Mangini era songs that would sound great with Portnoy on the drums, and I feel it wouldn't be much different than the songs recorded with MP.
Barstool Warrior
Transcending Time
The Enemy Inside
On The Backs of Angels
This Is The Life
Breaking All Illusions
The Bigger Picture
Surrender to Reason
Behind The Veil

Fall Into The Light
Sleeping Giant
Awaken The Master
Invisible Monster
The Gift of Music
Moment of Betrayal
The Path That Divides
A Life Left Behind
A New Beginning

If they do a pre-release tour that is essentially a "welcome back, Mike" tour, and they have a shortened set (i.e., not evening with), I could maybe see them temporarily not playing any MM era songs on that tour. But I would be shocked if that happens once they release the album and tour in support of it.
-
I guess they're going straight for the 40th anniversary

Moving to the other thread...
-
FFS, I can't make it to the Madrid date. >:(
-
From the amazing Rolling Stone interview, these factoids came out:
- Mike, as previously stated, is open and willing to play anything, he would like to take over the setlist duties again, but he's not gonna be "dictatorial" about it.
- Petrucci does not want to forget the Mangini albums, especially The Alien that won them a Grammy.
- No further context provided, maybe it was a joke that didn't translate, but LaBrie doesn't want to sing that song.
- This is for the debate about how much Mike knew about what DT were doing without him - he stated he has to catch up and see what he missed, so while he might have heard all the albums at a point in time, he really doesn't know them so well to the point that he alone could pick songs for the setlist, it will be the other guys I guess suggesting which songs they'd like to play.

I think what he said was honest. In my private discussions with him, obviously he had heard ADToE and made the song structure connections to IaW (and this was *before* Thiago made his Facebook post) as well as BtFW and TA. Plus he had IT listed among the various epics on his iPhone that he shared a screen cap of at one time on Facebook. So as he said in the interview, he was obviously aware of each of the albums (and probably each of the live releases) since he would be curious about what they did without him, but he probably made a conscious effort not to focus on them. So he has more than likely listened to each of the albums once or twice, but beyond that, probably not at all. And given the amount of music he listens to (and media in general for that matter), he probably doesn't remember much about anything on any of those albums aside from some generalities.

Not bad although there's a few things that would be different *if* this was the pattern they went with. I'd expect them to feature at least a couple tracks from the new album to open up the show. I'd also expect that the IaW slot would rotate with other favorites, especially Metropolis. Since it sounds like the closing track will be an epic or mini-epic, I would expect that to close out the main set or the encore and if it closed out the main show, then they would encore with a fan favorite; I don't see TBoT getting an airing expect maybe for the very last show they do as a band, as I think it would be difficult for MP to get through. And if they include OaMoT I personally hope they tag the instrumental half of March of the Tyrant (from the Majesty demos) on as they did in 1993. Plus, depending on the selected tracks as well as curfew times, I could see some albums getting skipped over from show to show. Otherwise, that looks pretty good. :tup
-
ITPOE Part II and Octavarium back-to-back would be something to dream of, god damn.
Though the problem with putting Octavarium in the middle of the set is that it's guaranteed to be downhill from there.

Yeah, you're definitely right that they'll probably play more than one song from DT16 and DT2. The March of the Tyrant tag would be kind of insane to see haha (really, anything off TMD would be!)

I don't believe there will be as many songs in the master setlist this time around, and it's almost a given that there won't be any cover tunes, but it's cool to see what they did almost 20 years ago, and it may give us at least a little idea of how MP might put the master setlist (from which each individual setlist is created) for the upcoming tour together. Or not. :lol
-
Not bad although there's a few things that would be different *if* this was the pattern they went with. :tup
Yeah, it's not bad. But it's also not in any way what this thread asked for. Since Chino did a great job of tallying the results from those who actually chose to follow instructions, and since few people actually seem willing to follow the instructions, I'll probably just close it soon. But as far as set list speculation, that can be done in the tour thread (I posted a possible set list there a few minutes ago).

Whoops! Sorry for getting distracted Bosk! Forgot what the purpose of this thread was for!
BTW, still waiting for your response to my e-mail from a week ago or so. :)

Oh, it wasn't you. No worries.
Yeah, I need to follow up and try to get that to work. When I first responded, it was trying to get me to sign up and dl the app. I haven't gone back to just try it like you said.

No need for an app. Just click the link and it will take you to the files for you to DL.

I mean, I already put in my top 10 when this thread started. I haven't read the OP in weeks (months?). And without reading the OP, setlist speculation is kinda what the subject looks like it's looking for. Sorry for blindly following other posters who were doing the same. Feel free to move my post to the correct thread.

Ah, OK. I hadn't picked up on that. That's certainly different than the many who just flat out ignored what the thread is supposed to be about. That makes sense.
-
Not sure if suggestions are still being taken, but this would my list.
1. The Glass Prison
2. Fatal Tragedy
3. Panic Attack
4. 6:00
5. Outcry
6. Under A Glass Moon
7. Barstool Warrior
8. Lines In The Sand
9. Constant Motion
10. The Dance Of Eternity
-
Well, yeah. I completely ignored the new album :D
Stupid me. Haha.
I think FII is a great album and want to hear songs from it
It actually would make the tour even more special to play those songs.
We all like what we like, but I'd be shocked if any album (other than the new one) gets three songs in the set list - especially if 5 of the 7 most recent albums are ignored.
My best shot at a tour master list for DT40
1. New Album Track #1

I know, right? "Cover My Eyes" is to "Burning My Soul" as a gold and diamond ring is to one of those sour candy rings.
-
I mean...I'd be totally fine for them to play BMS at the LA show and CME in NY/New England (although, frankly, I'd MUCH prefer Hollow Years, Anna Lee or YNM (not YOM)).
-
I'm with Stads, love me some CME... one of the best songs of the FII sessions!
-
Part of me is kind of hoping that the new album won't be released until Feb 2025-ish, and this European tour will feature the first single and a "greatest hits" setlist, with the 2025 leg being the tour for the new album, kind of like they did on the ADTOE tour where
they just played OTBOA on the first leg.
Songs I'd love to see:
The Killing Hand
Learning to Live
Erotomania/Voices/Silent Man
Peruvian Skies
Lines In The Sand
The Spirit Carries On
The Glass Prison
Blind Faith
Honor They Father
Sacrificed Sons
Pale Blue Dot
-

This is a great set, I would love this (w/ The Bigger Picture). Wouldn't mind expanding that acoustic set to maybe hit This is the Life, as well. I was thinking that if they kicked off the first show back w The Glass Prison the place would go nuts (I still feel this would be the most killer way to reintroduce the classic DT lineup). I can imagine waiting for showtime and seeing the lights go out and then hearing the into tape start playing bell tolls and static . . . goosebumps just thinking about it.
But the PMU suggestion - I think this works too. Crowds still go nuts for this song, and I'm sure opening night would only enhance that reaction.

Not a single person in this thread chose PMU as part of their top 10, at least up until the point I tallied.
I hope they pass on that one. I've seen it a number of times now.

MirrorMask, that's the best one so far. :tup

Yes, nice set, but I'm pretty sure they'll play more than 1 new song.
-
Thanks for the feedback guys! I must admit I created the setlist avoiding the new songs issue first of all 'cause I don't like to randomly give "new song" slots in a set not knowing what a song would sound, and also 'cause without new stuff it was easier to compile the two sets

Edit: Wow - I hadn't seen MirrorMask's post - looks like we had a lot of the same ideas!

I'd love to see that setlist. The second set might be pretty brutal on James though, even with a 10+ minute instrumental as the first track.

Yeah- I decided to lean more into "dream setlist" territory and wasn't accounting for JLB's stamina.
I haven't seen him since 2019, I'm not even certain he still has the chops to get through songs like Voices or Glass Moon these days.

You are correct. I didn't even consider it. But, the first song. Think of it. That..Is The Song. That is where they got started to get to here. Imagine A dark, quiet, stage...then that very first note. We will all know, with that one note, what it is. Honestly it's perfect for the vibe!

Normally I'm in the same boat as you w PMU. But thinking back to DreamSonic in Bridgeport - that was one of the few times during the show that the crowd had a visible pulse. I've heard it live too many times at this point, but I also cannot deny the reaction the song gets.

A good thing it has going for it is that it's got that hard stop at the end. It's the perfect song to not kill the flow of the setlist while teeing James up with a natural moment to welcome everybody back early on in the set.

I think if they're going that route, it'd be more likely to be Metropolis.
-
Pull Me Under is a song that I'm glad I got to see live once, but that's about it. Don't need to hear it again.
-
I’m the weird one here that loves PMU. Outside this forum, it’s still considered one of their most popular songs. It’s top 10 for me, and it is even better in a live setting. I think Pull Me Under or Metropolis are the two best options to open their shows for this tour.
-
The recorded intro to Metropolis kinda makes it perfect. While I'm sure Pull Me Under would get a great reception at The O2, I think the roof would pop off if the lights went down and those first three notes rang out.

My choices would be TGP, Metropolis or Overture 1928/SDJV. But yeah, any of those- particularly the first two- would blow the roof off.
Having said that I fully expect they will open with the first track from DT16, assuming it has been released by then. But maybe not...
-
I think 6:00 would be a fantastic opener, I'm just a huge fan of that song and it would be a blast to see it again with MP.

You're right; that's his most iconic intro, after all.

No one here dislikes it. It ranked at #14 on the recent countdown.
However, given that it's DT's most played song live, by a WIDE margin (847 times compared with 635 times for the #2 song - according to setlist.fm), and given how large the band's catalog is, most of us would prefer that scarce concert time be used on other songs.

This is how I feel. I, obviously, love Pull Me Under and I think most people do (it was the first song of there's I heard that made me go :ooooo), but I've seen it live once. Which was great. I don't really need to see it again, unlike something like, say Metropolis, which has been played many times but I'm down to see again.
-
They played PMU at 10 of the 17 DT concerts I've attended.
-
While it makes sense for them to play both PMU and Metropolis (2 of their most classic songs) on the anniversary tour, I feel like the best solution would be maybe to have an alternating setlist where you get either of them but not both. As great as both are, thats 20 minutes of runtime right there.
-
They played PMU at 10 of the 17 DT concerts I've attended.
That's interesting. I've seen them 23 times and Pull Me Under has only been played three times. I think you got into DT earlier than me (my first show was in 2004), and I only went to a handful of shows during the non-MP years, so that probably explains the difference.
-
Absolutely loving reading everyone's setlists and trying to envision them
-
So, knowing MP's probably mostly in control of setlists again, did you pass the setlists from us on to him already Bosk?
-
Guys, I don't know how it goes at your concerts, but as much as Pull Me Under is overplayed, in 20 years of seeing DT whenever that song started, it was a massive roar of excitement in the entire venue.
-

Yeah, there's a fanbase outside of the diehards who might be tired of it that freaking loves that song. Every time I've seen it played it's like Maiden playing The Trooper.

I love Pull Me Under, but there's an atmosphere to the song that I don't think they've ever successfully replicated in a live setting.

This is my problem with it (and a lot of the songs on that album). I just don’t think they translate live as well as most of their other songs. It used to be an atmosphere thing, I miss the lush wall of guitars and keys from the studio, but now JLB’s vocal struggles also hold the material back.
I was saying for awhile during the Mangini era that the I&W and Beyond tour was a nice send off to those songs and I didn’t need to hear them live again. Obviously with Portnoy back in the band they’re probably going to end up playing all 8 of them at some point or another, so it’s a moot point, but I struggle to imagine them sounding any better than they did in 2017.
-
I've changed my tune on songs like Pull Me Under. The last time I saw Kiss, "Rock and Roll All Nite" was just EXPLOSIVE, and during the finale, my daughter posted a picture on Instachat or Snapgram or whatever with the caption "Greatest night of my life!" During the Legacy of the Beast show in Hartford the show stopper was "The Number Of The Beast"; I could feel the heat from the stage and I could feel the venue - an amphitheater - literally shaking. Highlight of the show.
If we get those reactions to Pull Me Under, they can play it every tour as far as I'm concerned.
-
Right. I don't care if a band plays the same 3-5 songs on every tour, especially these long term bands that still tour. My issue with these bands' setlists is that they continually draw from the same batch of secondary tracks.
UFO and Alice Cooper are guilty of this, and for the longest time, so was Iron Maiden.
-
1. Octavarium - it's the right time for this one
2. The Glass Prison - so energy, so powah!
3. Hell's Kitchen/Lines In The Sand combo - classic DT that needs to be brought back
5. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream - a nice moody song, I wonder if they could come up with a nice added intro for it again
6. Stream Of Consiousness - to give James a break and to experience the main riff live again (in combination with the waves video like the tour in 2004)
7. S2N - cool song, never played live before
8. Blind Faith - reminds me of the era when DT was in their prime and my fandom was at it's peak
9. Surrender To Reason - a nice shorter song that I recently reconnected with
10. The Mirror (or As I Am) - one of the more 'straight forward' rockers which always work in a live environment (for me)
-
That's interesting. I've seen them 23 times and Pull Me Under has only been played three times. I think you got into DT earlier than me (my first show was in 2004), and I only went to a handful of shows during the non-MP years, so that probably explains the difference.
Yup. I went 15 1/2 years without seeing it live. Once they got past Awake, they had enough material such that PMU wasn't a "mandatory" inclusion. They they played it when they opened for Maiden in 2010 and at 4 of the 6 MM-era shows I attended.

I get that, but all things being equal....
-
All this talk about Pull Me Under makes want to double down on the idea of them performing the demo version live with the Erotomania section. Heck, they could even call it Oliver's Twist in the setlist. At least it would be an interesting version of a well-tread song.
-

Emphasis on the bold. I agree with what you guys are saying and feel the same way about your examples, but the only time I have experienced that sort of reaction with PMU at a DT show was, funnily enough, when they opened for Maiden in 2010. I just don’t think casuals are generally coming to DT shows so it really doesn’t matter that much.
Edit: I actually think that sort of crowd reaction applies to Metropolis generally, not PMU.
-
I don't blame DT for playing Pull Me Under. I know why they play Pull Me Under.
But the thread topic isn't "What makes sense for DT to play live?" It's very individualistic. "If YOU were writing the set list..." and if I were writing the set list, it would never be played again, in favor of some other song that hasn't been played live nearly as often.
-
and if I were writing the set list, it would never be played again, in favor of some other song that hasn't been played live nearly as often.
Yes.
-
Although I would prefer other songs in the set. When they play Pull Me Under I still jam out the same as any other song in the set. It's a fun live song. I think what makes ít fun live is singing along to "Pull Me Under"...
-
Now that we know it’s an evening with your. Here’s my set list!
1 - new DT song
2 - take the time
3 - 6:00
4 - Home
5 - lost not forgotten
6 - lifting shadows off a dream
7 - new DT song
8 - Illumination theory
Intermission
1 - The glass prison
2 - blind faith
3 - I walk beside you
4 - learning to live
5 - solo improve
6 - stream of consciousness
7 - trial of tears
8 - new DT epic
9 - encore octavarium

Yeah, I agree with all of this. I very much prefer the original arrangement of BMS. The studio version loses two of my favorite bits there - the moody HK intro and the way they jump back to it after "Buuuurning My ...". And I very much prefer the way they go into the verse after the intro. The studio version has that boring-ass bass riff looping for what feels like an eternity. It truly is one of their dullest songs that way.
The one thing they should've reworked is the transition from the middle section (which became Hell's Kitchen) into Derek's solo. That one just feels random and severely underdeveloped. I really wish they'd give this one another go, work the very nice ending of Hell's Kitchen into BMS '96 and develop a better-flowing way back to the chorus afterwards (with that keyboard solo ot without it, doesn't really matter). That would be the definitive version of the song.
-
Wild guess: they'll open with the 12 step suite.
-
I would be more excited about hearing all of their new material from DT16, and perhaps a few deep cuts of their older material.
Their new album might be a masterpiece, ya never know. :coolio
-
Wild guess: they'll open with the 12 step suite.
That would be a terrible idea.

I agree, I'd take a sub-ten-minute medley though of it later in the show, though.

Obviously whatever they do is up to them, but if I had my wish, there would be no medleys.

lol I see what you did there

From another thread:
I just came across the band's latest video update on Facebook. And, I could NOT be any happier with the news of Mike being back in charge of the setlists. This was one of the biggest questions I had about his return. Would he take over that responsibility again or would we continue with the mainly static setlists? I'm dying to see what he comes up with to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Which Mangini songs will he include? The US leg of this tour cannot come soon enough!!! :metal :metal :metal
I'm glad this info is out there now. I was aware of this through private channels, and it was sort of awkward having to tiptoe around this issue in connection with setlist discussions and some questions that have been asked that I could not really answer without implying that I knew this.
So, how that relates to this thread is: I have done these sorts of polls in the past, as some of you know, and I have shared that info with the band. Just after I started this thread, I was informed that Mike is going to be doing the set lists again. So, because of the somewhat delicate relationship between this forum and Mike, I am holding off on passing the list along to them until I can talk to Mike personally, which will likely not be until sometime during the tour. So, as has been true in the past, the band will see this list. But not as early as I originally planned. But regardless of whether this list can be taken into account on the first legs of the tour, I can almost guarantee that Mike will not forget about it. And as much as he loves the fans and tries to be in tune with what he thinks the fans want, I would be very surprised if he did not make a conscious effort to include things from it in the future.

All I know is that I would love to see them open with Dystopian Overture from TA.
-
1. The Glass Prison - As others have said this song is hard as shit, but I've never seen it and it would kill
2. To Live Forever (with jam section) - Always loved this song, don't think it's been played in almost 20 years?
3. The Great Debate - Badass song
4. Only A Matter Of Time - For Charlie :metal
5. Scarred - One of my favorites, and kills live
6. Lines in the Sand - This song is so damn good, also kills live
7. Panic Attack - Badass song, and also surprisingly popular for the band, at least based on Spotify rankings (I think due to Rock Band?)
8. Wait For Sleep/Learning to Live - I've only ever seen LtL as part of medleys, and would really love to see the whole thing
9. A Change of Seasons - I've only ever seen sections of it in medleys, and would love to see the whole thing return
10. Mike Thinks He's Dee Dee Ramone Introducing a Song Song - No explanation needed

Love that list man! I'm sure something will be played to honor Charlie and I'm hoping for Light Fuse and Get Away but would it be too much if they played Afterlife? That would be great too. :heart

So nothing from the Mangini Era? ???
-
So nothing from the Mangini Era? ???
True, I guess I'm kind of Mangini-ed out :lol But If I had to pick some Mangini tunes:
1. S2N - Portnoy could do some really cool stuff with this I think
2. Room 137 - Same as above
3. A Life Left Behind - Probably my favorite of The Astonishing, though the ending is a little too story driven to be a good standalone song, maybe
4. Dystopian Overture - I really love this as a standalone instrumental, but again, might be too triggering for some people :lol
5. The Enemy Inside - I think my favorite single from Mangini era
6. Breaking All Illusions - Just a killer song
-

Who is this....Mangini? :neverusethis:

Bummer you missed ACOS, they played it every show on the I&W 25th anniversary tour.

Man, don't even remind me :lol They come to Minneapolis EVERY tour, but not that one, and at the time I couldn't justify traveling. Trying to make up for it this time by going to the London show

They played TLF on the I&W 25th anniversary tour.

But only for the final leg of the tour, and even then, it got dropped.

Was thinking of the possibility of them playing 2 songs from the Mangini Era, which for some may sound impossible, but I think it could happen. I believe MP would choose songs maybe with a 1 album distance so they could encompass more. What would be some of your choices? Here are mine:
Breaking All Illusions and The Gift of Music
The Enemy Inside and Barstool Warrior
Surrender to Reason and Awaken The Master
On The Back of Angels and Untethered Angel
Lost Not Forgotten and Our New World
I don't know, don't feel strongly confident about some of them, but they pair nicely in my head. LNF and ATM are songs that just feel like MP would enjoy playing, like cool drumming challenges, and if they have the new single from DT16 out and it's with the 8-string, who knows, more chance for ATM.
-
I think Breaking All Illusions is the Mangini era song to be played and maybe one or two more, if they are on the short side.
My bet is the set list will be 30 minutes of new material, 20 minutes from Mangini era and 1:50 to 2 hours from the classic era (15 minutes of intermission). And 20 to 30 minutes of rotating material.

I'm hoping that MP looks at the setlists and songs not played from the Mangini era and throws them in for the completionists - I could definitely see Surrender to Reason, S2N, Out Of Reach, or Transcending Time being played along with maybe On The Backs of Angels or The Alien as a more "popular" track. Lost Not Forgotten seems a bit too technical for MP to choose, as I don't think he's the type to rehearse too much before a tour on his own learning songs from other drummers.

My (likely not popular) Set List :-)
taking into account current vocal limitations
1. I walk beside you
2. As I am
3. 6:00
4. Overture 1928
5. Strange Deja Vu
6. Wait For Sleep
7. Burning My Soul
8. Constant Motion
9. This is The Life
10. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
11. Pull Me Under
Encore
12. The Root Of All Evil
13. Ytse Jam
14. Enemy Inside

I’m glad I got to see it. It’s such an underrated gem.

I've been thinking this for a few weeks now and wanted to share it... I think DT should do a Mangini-era medley on the upcoming tour featuring the lead singles (aka the opening tracks) from the five albums he played on: "On The Backs of Angels," "The Enemy Inside," "The Gift of Music," "Untethered Angel" and "The Alien." They can call it "The Mangini Medley."

Interesting. I do like The Gift Of Music a lot. The Mangini Mash Up?

Wow, what a patronizing and marginalizing way of treating the Mangini Era. That would seriously piss me off as a Dream Theater fan.
-
They should treat the albums just like the rest of their discography. I know some of that era is polarizing, but I would say fan response to those five albums was mostly positive. I don't see why they can't continue to include a few songs from that era in the setlists, it's not like they were digging that deep into those albums before Portnoy came back anyway.

Its not gonna happen. A lot of DT's best stuff is with Mangini.

This is how I feel. They're literally albums 11-15 of the band's storied history. I don't understand the need to group them together as something different just because of the drummer. Albums 1-4 aren't a different band just because they're not the current lineup. The same goes with the last five. Not to mention naming a medley after a former member is weird and tacky (and as mentioned, patronizing and marginalizing). It would be like if they did a medley of Learning to Live, Scarred, and Only a Matter of Time and called it "The Moore Medley."

Pretty sure Mebert would be all for a Moore Medley. :lol

Haha, well sure! Any medley of DT songs wouldn't be that bad.
But, yeah, let's just play songs in full please! :metal
-
What if the next tour was a 2 hour medley? :lol
-
Also, they are clearly never going to do another medley. That is no longer something JP has to compromise on since he gets the final say.
-
I think if they ever played a new medley, it'd be an Astonishing medley, and even that'd be a long shot. But with Mike in charge of the setlists again, you never know :lol
-
What if the next tour was a 2 hour medley? :lol
. . . combining snippets of every DT song ever recorded.

I agree completely. I certainly don't expect stuff from those 5 albums to ever take up even a 1/3 of a setlist, but having 2 or 3 tracks per show - especially on this tour - is not an unreasonable request, and I'm of the mind that this will happen. I don't think that MP is that unreasonable to push 1/3 of their catalog to the side just because he wasn't involved with those albums and even if he did, I'd imagine JP and perhaps the others would request that he did.
What if the next tour was a 2 hour medley? :lol
Actually I would love to see them do a sort of Beatles/Cirque du Soleil Love thing for a set. It would actually be perfect for an anniversary tour if they weren't also going to be touring in support of a new album, although I would see that being kinda like a concept album of sorts performed during the second set.
Also, they are clearly never going to do another medley. That is no longer something JP has to compromise on since he gets the final say.
Maybe, maybe not. Especially if MP intends to include something from every album at every show besides a healthy amount of the new album, a medley might be a good way to make that happen. I could see MP reasoning with him on that.
-
It would be great if they could work The Ones Who Help To Set the Sun into the setlist as a Charlie dedication song. Such an underplayed gem.
-

Yea, that's pretty much where I'm at. I can't imagine JP (or anyone else in the group) being willing to let a third of the catalog go just because MP wasn't there. It also just isn't consistent with the band's history until now. They still play songs that Rudess wasn't part of and have been arguably more charitable to their debut album than most other bands have been with lesser known/less popular albums. I don't really see any reason why the Mangini era would be ignored other than the fact that they have struggled to include songs from those albums on recent tours already besides whatever the album they're touring on is. But if they are bringing back rotating setlists* then there is more room to include songs from those albums and less of an excuse not to.
Maybe, maybe not. Especially if MP intends to include something from every album at every show besides a healthy amount of the new album, a medley might be a good way to make that happen. I could see MP reasoning with him on that.
I get that and I guess we really have no way of knowing what the behind the scenes discussions are right now. Obviously the infamous example of JP not liking medleys is Rush, but Rush used medleys to solve the same problem DT has now: how to fully incorporate a big discography. I would rather them not try to do the impossible and instead just make sure each era is appropriately covered and use rotation to round things out. i.e. city A gets a song from BC&SL while city B gets a song from Systematic Chaos. Or city A gets never before played song from DT12 and city B gets the same from Distance Over Time.
*BTW someone dropped that 50th anniversary albums Prog Report video with MP somewhere recently. I highly recommend it to those who haven't watched, but also MP dropped a few more nuggets that I haven't really seen mentioned here yet. The big one to me, and maybe this is just reading too much into things, is Portnoy said something along the lines of submitting the "main" setlist to the rest of the band. I read that as meaning "master" setlist and that there will be some sort of rotation going into the tour.
-
I'm hoping they pull out some of the less/never played Mangini era songs as a way to cover that territory, plus some of those songs seem like they'd go really well with MPs style. The epics from that period were very well represented during their respective tours, so I'd rather see some other jems.
-

I totally didn't mean it in a patronizing away. My apologies, as I didn't read the previous pages of the thread before posting, so if I missed something that's my fault. In my head, I'm thinking there's a chance DT might not play any Mangini-era songs on the upcoming tour and might focus exclusively on MP songs since he just returned to the band. If that's the case, I would encourage them to consider a "Mangini Medley" featuring the lead singles from each of the five albums he played on, which I think would be kind of cool. I don't think it would "marginalize" Mangini, it would do the opposite in my opinion: it would dedicate a solid 15-minute chunk of the show to Mangini in celebration of him as opposed just peppering in his songs here and there.
-
I'm guessing the epics slots are going to be taken by MP era songs anyway. One or more of the following seems like a lock: Octavarium, Learning to Live, Metropolis, A Change of Seasons. If there's a new album in time, whatever the new epic is will probably be in as well. So that more or less guarantees the Mangini era picks will mostly be non-epics. I could maybe see Breaking All Illusions as a few people here have requested, but there's a lot to choose from in the non-epic category especially when three of the five albums went for shorter songs overall.

I didn't mean that YOU were marginalizing. Sorry. That's not how I meant it. I mean, there's any number of ridiculous setlist proposals on DTF all the time. I meant that if that was something the BAND actually did, I'd lose a ton of respect for them.
-
Personal hopes for the new tour is that they spread the love for all the albums. Maybe 1 or 2 songs each.
No more playing I&W/Awake/Sfoam marathons, just because it is the anniversary.
I Would love to hear any new songs.
Also I would like to hear the less played songs among the 'hits'.
There's actually quite a few songs that have never been played live.
1-2 songs from each albums starting from the newest:
aVFTTotW: Answering the Call / Sleeping Giant
DoT: Paralyzed / Out of Reach
Ast!: Act of Faythe / a New Beginning
DT: Enigma Machine / The Enemy Inside
aDToE: This is the Life / Far from Heaven
BC&SL: The Shattered Fortress
SC: Prophets of War (My top 1 pick) / The Ministry of Lost Souls
Octa: I Walk Beside You / Panic Attack
ToT: Stream of Consciousness / In the Name of God
6DoIT: Literally anything from the 2nd disc would be great.
SFOAM: Finally Free (as the encore) / The Spirit Carries on
FII: Hell's Kitchen / Trial of Tears
aCoS: Any section of the song. Maybe 5-7?
Awa: Space-Dye Vest / The Silent man
I&W: Metropolis pt:1 / Another Day
WDaDU: Ytse Jam
