Welcome to my third roulette! We're going to keep things super simple this time. The first roulette was all albums, and the second roulette had a grand total of 325 different songs sent. This one will be shorter, have a smaller banned list, have a much simpler form of scoring, and include eliminations. This time I'm just doing this for fun. If I find something I really want to dive into afterwards, awesome, but I just think roulettes are fun and want to do another for kicks.
There are some DTFers traveling and I want to give them a chance to join if they want to play, so I'm leaving sign-ups open all weekend and probably most of next week, but hopefully I will have most/all of the submissions by then because I plan to give round 1 results somewhere on September 28th-29th.

2 eliminations every round... 16 points per round, to keep the top end consistent with the first round's results. Top ranking song in each round gets 16, second place gets 15, etc.
Current Tastes, and Other Things You Should Know:
1. Please avoid power metal if you can. Despite all the power metal sent to me last roulette, by a country mile my favorite stuff is still what I've been discovering on my own.
2. Prog metal... if it sounds like Tool or Soen or Threshold or Pain of Salvation, PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS, I VERY much do not like those bands (a tiny handful of Threshold songs excluded). If one of the primary weapons in a band's sonic arsenal is growls and screaming, or sludgy guitar sounds, AVOID AT ALL COSTS (SOME growls are okay, but if you send Gojira or Meshuggah I will find you and punch you in whatever balls you have). If your female vocalist sounds like a Tarja Turunen wannabe, AVOID AT ALL COSTS, I cannot stand that sound anymore. IF YOUR BAND SOUNDS LIKE HAKEN, or as I call them "Scenes From A Memory: The Band" your odds are 50/50 that I hate or love it. Probably no in between.
3. Recent prog metal discoveries of mine that I've fallen in love with: Leprous, Caligula's Horse, Subsignal, Sieges Even, Thank You Scientist, Devin Townsend (from Epicloud to present), Tesseract (Altered State - I tried Sonder and Polaris but didn't like them, but AS clicked), IQ, Mystery, and especially Shattered Skies.
4. Saxophone makes everything better. I heard a power metal album this summer that just haphazardly tossed a sax solo over some raging power metal riffs and I wanted to split the sky with a sword forged from narwhal horns and unicorn blood.
5. Sentimental and pensive is the key to my heart. Tom Waits' Closing Time is the best record I've been shown on DTF and it's one of my all-time favorite albums now. I urge you to send me something like this if you have anything like it in your collection.
6. Instrumental music with pep and vibrancy to the music is my jam. Arch Echo freaking rules. Levin Minnemann Rudess is way better than Liquid Tension Experiment. The Japanese group Casiopea is AMAZING (look up the song Galactic Funk if you need a taste). Smooth jazz groups like The Rippingtons and acid jazz like Incognito. Big band swing and jazz numbers like Herbie Hancock's Dolphin Dance, or the Tiger of San Pedro, or Sing Sing Sing. I love, love, LOVE lively instrumental music.
7. World music. Fuck yeah. I occasionally load up mbube (African vocal music) and get lost in that stuff.
8. Synthwave. Synthwave is a big plus for me. Michael Oakley, Magic Dance, FM-84, Le Cassette, that kind of stuff is amazing.
9. Randy Newman's style of songwriting and biting wit is genius and I would love to find more songwriters with his kind of gift.
10. Enya is love, Enya is life.
Those are just some helpful tips. A friend of mine often pokes fun at me and says I have "inscrutable taste" and every time he thinks he has me figured out, I surprise him with a hot take or by liking something I normally wouldn't, so go nuts, take risks and send something weird.

I know he really likes Tycho and Solar Fields. So ambient electronic music should do well. Maybe.

I don't know Berlin School, and my knowledge of various electronic subgenres is not so good (labels in electronic music confuse me more often than not). But I do like chill downtempo stuff a lot. Tycho is my absolute favorite, but Solar Fields' "Ourdom" is an incredible work as well. Ambient, chill, steadily building and organically evolving, like the Solar Fields track "Mountain King" - tasty stuff to me. More often than not I like my electronic music without vocals. But I also love dance type electronic music, stuff with a straight steady kick beat and warm rich synths on top, breakbeats like the song "The Fountain" by Pendulum...
Nekov sent a lot of electronic stuff of various types in my last roulette; I think he was the most consistently successful participant.

So I'm still trying to figure out how scoring is going to work for round 1. I was initially going to grant points per place, so with 16 participants first place would get 16. But I don't know, because that's a wide gap between first and last place, and in round 2 there will be 3 less people so the max points available are 13. So, I think I'll do scoring out of 10 - 10 for first place, 9 for second etc. naturally with the possibility of ties. Any input on that is welcome but it'll be locked in once round 1 results get started.
I can tell you that I am very impressed with most of these, but I already know 2 that are getting the axe. It could be you!

That's exactly how I did mine last year (I had 15 or 16 I think) ... stack rank 1-10, with a few ties smattered about. The tie could happen anywhere - except 1st and 10th. There's always a single 'best', and a single 'worst' song. OR... you always have 16 as your starting score, and then the 'worst' song in round 2 isn't going to get a 1, but will get 4... which is fair, because the 13th ranked song gets a 4 in both rounds. If you change the top end, then the "best" songs get reduced points as eliminations happen. I think the stack-rank kind of format must have a consistent top-end for an entire roulette, otherwise, people that score high in the first couple of rounds will get higher scores than anyone else can get later in the roulette. Raising the bottom end doesn't matter as much, because the people that score that low are gonna get the boots after the first couple of rounds anyway.

I think I will go with the top score for each round being 16 since I think we have all the players we're gonna get (17 if ariich decides he wants to play). This will keep everything simple and clean and still allow for big comebacks.

I know Christ 0 and actually own Beyond Daylight, but I have slacked in getting to know their other stuff. I am fairly certain I have heard at least one other album, too, but I don't recall any of it. I dunno... I'm not in LOVE with the band but they have a lot of stuff and I'm open to hearing them, so it's pretty cool that someone sent them in round 1. They were legit one band I was hoping somebody would send more of hence why I didn't ban them. But it's absolutely no guarantee of a good score.

I've been struggling with how many people to eliminate in the first round. I set it at 3 people for both round 1 and round 2, and yet I can only think of 2 songs I don't actually like in round 1, so that third person will just be unlucky.
Should the third person be allowed to stay (assuming they're not Nekov or Sacul who have immunity), or do they get the boot ("rules are rules")? :) Going to try to add a poll to this...

(Though I don't think you should go the other way, meaning, don't say "no eliminations!" then turn around after everyone submitted and say "wow, there's some shit here, and someone's going home!". I know if I don't have to fear elimination, I might send different things.)

I'll again point to my experience last year; I thought 16 people was going to be too much, but in the end, it turned out to be something I could actually handle. Despite saying that I was going to eliminate some people, I ended up keeping everyone ... well almost everyone - there was one Don'tCare-quit. That user doesn't post around here anymore :biggrin:

Well I want as many people to participate in the beginning as there are people willing to play. The eliminations serve as motivation to send your best/something I'll latch onto, because more people = more competition. I didn't have eliminations in my other 2 roulettes and after a while I started to feel bad for the people coming in at the bottom because even though I was getting good music from them they were just lagging behind with no real shot at winning anyway. Also I don't want to listen to 16 concept albums. :lol
Okay... and this actually works out perfectly, once ariich sends his song. 2 eliminations every round, meaning there will be 2 players left for the final, concept album round. That works out extraordinarily well. Also the poll shows 1-5 in favor of 2 so hooray.

I appreciate your thoughts! I thought about no eliminations in the first round but I wanted to give Sacul and Nekov some reward (read: immunity) for being clear champions in the last roulette, particularly Sacul as he somehow won both of my roulettes.

Everything about this song hits the mark. Everything the synths do is pleasing to my ears. The singer's voice isn't terribly outstanding, but gels with the music so well that it actually enhances the sound. I adore the massive drums when they kick in, and how fluid the transitions between every section are. Of course the real star of this song is the screaming saxophone. Sax always makes stuff better, but this guy is going fucking bonkers and creates such a huge mood that I think I said "holy shit" at least three or four times when this first played. In fact, this song was so good that I dropped the other songs for an hour to go play this entire album and it's fantastic. Easy first place.

I've been raving about this song to some friends all week, and actually shared it on the ProgPower USA Facebook page and it got a very nice response from the community who apparently really dig this song and/or band. I love it. It's nice and bubbly with a positive vibe to the music, and the singer's gentle voice is a big part of that, but so is the synth lead. It has this dulled out jagged edge to whatever the patch is being used and it's such a fascinating texture to me. The rhythm threw me for a loop at first; I wasn't expecting a song in 9/8 to sound so catchy with such an organic, easy to follow rhythmic pattern. At least I'm pretty sure it's in 9/8. This song makes me feel like I'm floating underwater, melting all my stress away.

Also knew this would rank towards the top the first time I heard it. Pure synthwave, 80s worship, huge catchy beats and melodies and shiny synths that tickle my fancy. I love everything about this song, although my only nitpick is that on repeat listens I've found myself a bit tired of the spoken word samples. It matches the vibe of the track wonderfully, I just don't like when it's laying out such a blunt message without any subtlety - just kind of wish it would stay instrumental and take me on a trip through this lovely sonic landscape. Other than that it's a masterpiece, and like I said in Cyril's writeup, I checked out the rest of this album and it's wonderful. This song freaking rules.

What I meant by that impression was that this is (arguably) the most minimalist song of the round. There's a lot of wacky instrumental stuff and some crazy mashups on almost every other submission, but this one sticks to a piano, a voice, and a drizzle of strings on top. So it's really hard to compare this to a full-on jazz-rock-fusion instrumental that shreds for 7 minutes. But, in the end, this one came out above all of them - why? His voice has a lovely sound and the melody he carries is beautiful, for one. Also, the piano line is simple but pretty, and it's that bright tone of the piano itself that really gets me. I don't dislike a dark piano sound, but this brightness and warmth is what I really love particularly in ballads. The lyrics and music both complement each other well and the song doesn't overstay its welcome. It's just a solid, emotional song that resonates with me.

I sent you Casiopea and you threw it right back at me. Okay, not exactly the same kind of music, but the energy and wicked playing is all there. When I said I like lively music, this is what I've been dying to discover. The audio makes it sound like every player is putting their heart into their performance, and every melodic idea and solo is played with such pep that it put a smile on my face the first time. The big moments that bring the main motif back have such a sharp striking sound, the first thing I thought of was the opening theme "Tank!" for the classic anime Cowboy Bebop. This one is like Casiopea's Galactic Funk to me, just a joy to play from start to finish. Then I looked up a video of them playing this, and sure enough, the musicians themselves looked like they were busting their asses playing the music and were having a blast doing so. Excellent piece of music!

It's borderline cheating, because Los Lobotomys has been on my short list of 'albums to buy' for many years, yet I've never bothered looking up the music online before purchasing. But Kwyjibo took full advantage of me Toto/Lukather/Porcaro love and knocked it out of the park here. Hard to believe this is live with how tight the playing is. I don't think there's one sour note in this track. From the first listen it reminded me of a Toto song that would come many years later, "Taint Your World" from Falling In Between, and that's a good thing - I really love this high speed, electric groove, makes me feel like the song actually has momentum and isn't crawling towards the end. I don't think it overstays its welcome either. The lineup on this record is mindbogglingly good and I've bumped this one up to be one of my next album purchases for sure. Awesome track and god bless Steve Lukather.

It's possible I've heard something else, but I'm pretty sure this is the only Tori Amos song I've ever heard. I was expecting something very poppy. This is adventurous and dramatic. Actually reminds me of a more recent pop musician, Charlotte Martin, and the song 'Veins' - it's got an interesting vibe and an even more interesting breakdown. There is a moment in the song when she sings "but you don't really need it" and it sounds exactly like a moment of SW's album To The Bone but I can't pinpoint which song it's in. Anyway, she's got a great voice and it's more complex than I was expecting, and it's held up on multiple listens. I really like this and might have to get more if the rest of her stuff is similar.

I SO dig the groove in this piece. Nice funky bass with some slick brass on top and sharp motifs, it's really tasty music to chew on as I go for a walk. Kind of struggled with where to place this though, given the stiff competition this round. I think it's held up just fine on repeat listens, but unlike the songs above this I'm not uncovering a lot of new stuff in those repeat listens, so it's hard to justify putting it higher - but I really like the whole track, the vibe is chill but not lethargic and moves at a nice head bopping pace. Wish the band name was better though :) really good track here.

Coming in right under the halfway mark, this song's ranking is merely a consequence of just how good the other submissions are this round. This is my kind of old school country. The instrumentation is minimal and simple and the role is to set the mood for the story he's singing - the star of the show here is his voice and the lyrics. It's crazy how a simple melody can do so much for a song, and he sells the hell out of it. It's a cliché scene but I just freaking love songs like this where I can imagine a guy drinking alone at a bar and the song is all about what he's struggling with personally. Great song - but I'm banning Hank Williams, Jr. now :)

I know it must sting to see the other VOLA song rank much higher than this, but hear me out: I've heard this group described as Meshuggah meets Depeche Mode. Well, I don't know any Depeche Mode, and I dislike Meshuggah, but overall I think this song rocks. I love the verses and basically everything about the song other than when the tough guy shouting starts. It's not BAD, it just takes away a bit from the song for me, whereas "Applause of a Distant Crowd" has this summery beauty to the music that I think is enough to make them stand out, and that heavy part in this one doesn't really set them apart. That's literally my only gripe; it is in fact a great song that really shows their creativity and the main riff is chunky and funky. This band is now banned, because I'm sold on their sound. This is a really cool song, but again, a victim of its competition. (You've sent me 2 VOLA songs now and I think I actually like this one more than Smartfriend, which is a good sign!)

I wasn't expecting something like this from you, TAC. Consider me pleasantly surprised! I was actually expecting straight-up heavy metal like usual. Okay, so. I don't dislike this track, it's just, again, a victim of competition. I was thrown by the odd rhythms but really enjoy them. It's got this dark vibe. Now the soloing is really nice, but the saxophone is my favorite thing about this song. I'm kind of sad it goes away so quickly though, and by the end I'm left surprised that it isn't brought back. The guitar soloing is nice, but doesn't leave a lot left for me to chew on when coming back to it. It's a very interesting song and I'm thinking about checking out more of their stuff if it's as creative as this. Not bad - but not blowing my mind either.

I feel a little bad that this is coming in so low, but for the umpteenth time: it's a victim of competition. I really dig this song because it's got this slick identity - some really groovy 70s-style jamming and a funky rhythm. The image I get is 100% 1970s New York City, big hair and loud fashion and strutting through the city. To that extent I think it's very cool and flavorful. Two problems bring it down for me though - I think it's a little too long for what it is, and there's almost a full minute later on where the Hammond is laying on this high note and I find it maddening. It's a minor quibble but on repeat listens 50+ seconds of that pitch became tedious, and as much as I like the piece, that one thing ruins some of the magic here. I don't dislike this song, it's really good. Tower of Power has my interest.

This singer reminds me of someone that I should know. It's a distinct voice, but even after looking him up, I can't pinpoint it. Maybe Arcturus? I really don't know. My gut reaction to this initially was disappointment that it never really picks up, but also fascination that it sounds like Ayreon if Arjen got bit by the industrial music bug. Really sounds like a sludgy, grimey distortion of bits and pieces of Ayreon particularly because of that dark string line over the rest of the band. But the mood is almost uncomfortable at times, like a boozy funk, and I think the end drags on just a bit too long for my liking. It's an interesting piece and I don't dislike it, but there was also nothing that particularly grabbed me by the hojos and said 'buckle up' so the ranking is what it is. Certainly not writing this group off.

Update: it's not a bad thing. However, it just sounds like Vanden Plas. I like Vanden Plas. Unfortunately there's nothing here that's impressing me. The riff is nice, the vocals are nice, everybody sounds comfortably Vanden Plas. But I think one could also interpret that as 'stale.' I don't - I want to be clear, I like this song - I'm just not finding anything to really go 'wow' at. Strangely, I think it's both better than some of the stuff on the albums I'm familiar with and a bit tepid, not really doing anything special. I like the sound of his voice, and wish he'd do more like what he does at the end of the song. For the last time, it's just a victim of competition, I wish I could rank this one higher.

I just don't like his voice, *especially* when he tries to do the 'doo-doo-doo' harmonies. I don't think he sings well, and the particular harmonies he's going for just don't sound pleasant to my ears. I like the lyrical subject matter and the groove in the hook. I really appreciate you having the balls to take aim at the Randy Newman side of my musical taste - it's a very risky move and with someone as unique and distinct at Randy, it's really hard to find something in that vein, so thank you for trying. But them's the breaks - sorry brudda, I appreciate you gambling in the first round.

:lol Sorry, that impression is a bit rude in hindsight. I really tried to like this, my man. I think it's artsy and his singing voice has a nice sound, but it's just so weird and vampiric - always makes me think of Dracula sitting in a dark stone room singing to himself. So I went and read the lyrics to the song, which lead me to the story behind the song. The story, honestly, is more appealing to me than the song itself. The lack of any sort of buildup combined with its length and really strange atmosphere was very off-putting. I really tried to open my mind to this one, but it's just a swing and a miss - sorry, buddy. Thanks for sending a bold first track.

That's totally the vibe I was getting from it, so that's good to know. Stray The Skies is indeed awesome, but as a whole that album hasn't really clicked for me. I disagree about the guitars; there's just too many generic djent / Meshuggah-esque riffs throughout the record, if you ask me. The new one only really has them in Smartfriend (which is a total banger so it's okay) and I guess the main riff of Alien Shivers. To me, they really focused on what makes their sound stand out (their sense of melody and cool synth stuff) and the result is a lot more interesting and original. I'm hoping they continue to go in that direction for whatever they do next.

That song is pure Steve Lukather/Toto groove and energy and yes, Steve later kinda recycled the riff for Taint Your World. That Los Lobotomys record is fun, but with Smell Yourself you already know the best song. The rest isn't bad but more in a fusion-jazzy direction with a lot of jammin'.

I was impressed with Beyond Daylight and Christ 0, they just didn't blow me away. I really like those records, to the point that I purchased Beyond Daylight and it's lovely. But I haven't heard anything that has knocked my socks off in a 'holy shit' type of way, and like I told you, I know they have plenty of records so there's gotta be some greatness in there that I've missed. Also, I read it in a way that implied you were having trouble picking out artists I haven't heard, so I wanted to give you (and everyone else) some leeway in terms of submissions. It's not like I was setting you up or anything, I went into it completely open-minded. At the same time if you compare it with all the other types of music that were sent this round, well, it just doesn't do anything that fresh or inventive to my ears, so unfortunately it ranked low. Them's the breaks. Sorry buddy. I hope you don't feel like I was trying to play you. So that's why they weren't banned, but are now.
On the other hand, you sent me some fucking incredible songs in my last roulette and I'm fully expecting some more songs by a couple of those artists, but who knows? Take a chance. Fair enough. In your credit you mentioned you were waiting for them to blow you away but the mixed message of you saying at the end 'basically I'm encouraging you to send some VP' clouded my judgement. I should have known better. I've had an awful week so that didn't help in searching for something to send either. I know you are trying to make selections a bit easier by opening the banned list, but in my experience situations like that I always ban them, as I know if they haven't blown me away whatever else comes isn't going to change my mind, especially when I'm looking for new music. I should ahve opted out and gone for something else.
To be honest, it was very difficult in the end of your last roulette to try and gauge your tastes, and I still can't, so I've sent my song of the year. Even though it will get me eliminated, I hope you give it a chance.

I'd say her debut Little Earthquakes is probably the best place to start if you'd like to hear more.

I'm of two minds on this. I posted on Friday in hopes that people would see it early and send so I wouldn't have to wait 4 days to get songs (especially because I know Stadler is not around on the weekend, normally) but what can you do, I don't expect people to always be around over the weekend because we all have lives. On the other hand, I've always been consistent with my results posting and it's almost always around the weekend, so it gets a bit tiresome waiting (I eliminated Elite in my last roulette because I was tired of waiting for a submission, which I thought was fair).
On the other other hand it gives me time to listen to the majority of songs and then focus on the latecomers, but it's also not fair for people who sent literally right after results are posted which was most of you. :)

Ding ding ding. Here we have something that sounds like it came straight off of Toto's "Kingdom of Desire" record. This song has a tasty vibe that I find particularly interesting. It SCREAMS that 1990s rock vibe between the groovy guitar part and that straightforward drum beat. I love that. The singer is a dead ringer for Kingdom of Desire-era Steve Lukather, it's uncanny. And then halfway through, it transforms itself into something else entirely, developing a huge Marillion sound with the slick, audible bass and sugary repeated hook. Fantastic song!

I LOVE singers with some character to their voice and this guy's definitely got that, but he's also carrying very strong melodies and sells them with gusto. This is easily the catchiest song in the round, that hook is wonderful and the beat just keeps going. The horn solo is short and sweet, and I really like the "little bit louder now" part and how it gets right back into the hook. I love the whole song but the singer is certainly my favorite thing about this group based on this song. Given the stuff you sent me in my first roulette I'm amazed at the two songs you've sent so far. Can you keep it up?

Risky submission that paid off in the end. Like with Foxy Shazam, I really like the singer here because he not only has chops but has real character and his delivery matches the lyrics he's singing. I love that little bit of rasp he throws in here and there, especially in the chorus. The riff in the verses reminds me of new-era Stratovarius (Matias Kupiainen-style riffing) and that synth lead is tasty and whoever's behind the keys has some mad chops. Love the frenetic energy of the solos and the ominous vibe the main motif of the song has. The cherry on the sundae is the seamless transition to the key change at the end. Badass song.

This is such a beautiful sound. It's a delicate mixture of the warm, bright, 80s-style electric piano and the singer's strangely muffled but charming voice. The little saxophone and guitar flourishes - oh my. Really tasteful playing. This is a great companion to the only other Bon Iver song I know, Holocene. This is a big mood. Lovely song.

This is a weird song, in a good way. I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this. This one went all over the ranks - I first had it low, then I had it super high, then it just hung out in the middle for a while. I think it does a great job of building organically and with the heavy synth presence at the end it becomes this towering dark beast of a song with an impressive, almost chaotic final 30 seconds. Rather than having an individual favorite part, I like how this song is more or less a single idea that is expanded upon from start to finish. I enjoy the dark energy very much, the combination of the machine-like synths and that creepy (but enjoyable) singer is really cool. Curiosity piqued.

This is definitely aliens on cocaine. The drums and synths combine to make this burpy rhythm section that's right at home with the active sax line overhead. The moments where the synth sections enhance the melody, like around 3:00, are gorgeous. That last minute is an awesome, relentless synth-jazz-groove assault. Man, this is just a weird track, and I love that. It's adventurous, it's out there, it's fresh to my ears. Very cool track.

What I mean by that impression is that it has all the expected elements of a modern prog metal outfit, but the sound is curious and fresh. One thing this track does really well in my opinion is having colorful guitar chords. They're not just there to fill up space, they actually color the mood, almost in an Alex Lifeson kind of way. There's an off-kilter prog rhythm to the playing, but when they open up, they really let the song breathe, and they play so well with the synths, which create this gorgeous backdrop, but then the synth solo slides in so naturally I didn't even notice it came in the first time around. When I had my Korg Krome I would play with these styles of synth patches a lot, and they're so pretty. Right around the 4:30 mark is where this song really picks up for me, it heads into this emotional climax, this piece really makes me think of interplanetary travel for some reason. The song culminates in a very cool way as the singer hits a high note and the guitars and synths double up to bring it home. (Irrelevant to the music itself, but this also has the coolest album art of the round.)

Years ago when I had different coworkers at the shop, this is the kind of music we'd play all the time, but I'd tune it out because it sounded, well, kind of generic and old. Like everything was Stevie Ray Vaughn-ish. Well this is actually really cool. Very nice use of horns and backing vocal lines, a groovy audible bass line, sick guitar playing, and a very catchy hook. Not sure when this song was released but this is another that gives me a big 90s vibe. I like the swell of energy in the chorus a lot, and the overall "gonna get on without you now" vibe is pretty relatable. I guess I should've expected this from Gary Moore but I can't really think of much else I've heard by him, so this was a treat, thank you.

I'm really drawn to the rhythm section in this track. It reminds me of the last time I played jazz, which was my high school jazz band, holding down the rhythm section with my good buddies on bass and drums. Dave's drumming is really interesting to listen to. I think this is the first piece by Dave and his band that I've heard, so it's a cool introduction. I have to say this track gets 9 points because of stiff competition, there isn't anything I dislike here. I just think its nature lends itself to not having a hook or poppiness that's in your face, the nuances of this track are more subtle, and the playing is still top notch. Quality jazz, thank you for this.

This was definitely one of the most difficult tracks to place this round and I damn near got a headache trying to figure out what to do with it. So, yeah - this is something totally bizarre and unexpected, but I'm glad I mentioned world music in my OP because it got you to send me this. This is so interesting and fresh, not like a lot of other stuff I've heard before. The beat is active but unobstrusive to what the instruments are doing above it. There is this bubbly synth pattern just plugging away that keeps the momentum going, the rhythm section in this track is really good at setting the mood. There's some eastern sounding wind lines with the bells and chimes, and I like the subtle vocal parts. I dig the back half as it gets a bit harder and louder, really pushing the dancey vibe this song has. Nightwish introduced me to the uilleann pipes and I love what they bring in the back half. I think the thing that kept this from ranking higher - mind you, I don't dislike this at all - is simply that the competition was fierce and most of the higher ranking songs were shorter and a bit more concise. But I really like this.

I've heard a lot about Depeche Mode throughout my life yet have never listened to their music until now. So this song... it's tough, I'm not gonna lie - I initially had this just above last place, but it managed to climb a little higher in the end. The beat tells me this is some kind of industrial 90s song, but the vocals tell me it's 80s pop, so this song is a weird mix of sounds to me that still manages to work. It took me a few listens to actually realize that the hook is meant to be subdued - but I keep wanting more. The last minute or so when it picks up and adds more layers are really fun, it just takes a while to get there. So I'm still interested in Depeche Mode, I guess I just wasn't sure what to expect going into this one. Again, not bad at all - but in the context of this round, against the other songs here, them's the breaks.

Very spirited indeed. So, kind of like Gary Moore, this reminds me of stuff we used to play at work a lot back when I had older coworkers who were more familiar with this style of rock than anything else. But this has a bit more speed to it which I like a lot, and the main motif it goes back to is very easy to remember. And the players are top notch, they're relentlessly going at it (shout out to the bassist, he's got great lines in this piece). I like that this is on the shorter end, it just kind of gets in and does its thing and gets out without drawing out the ending. So unfortunately, the only reason this ranks where it does is because of the fierce competition. Almost anything under the halfway mark is due to that reason and it's my biggest headache when it comes to scoring because I end up feeling bad about where something ends up, but that's the game for ya. Make no mistake, I still liked this a fair bit.

My man. My dude. My two-time roulette champion - I have been dreading this for a few days now. You sent a mammoth song, a risky song, and while I do not dislike it, it unfortunately does not cut the mustard. Why is that? Let's get the good out of the way. The most succinct way I can describe this track is that it's like an extended Nils Frahm piece if Nils Frahm suddenly started glitching in and out of reality while playing. I really admire the artsy glitches in the music, it's a small touch but it's an effect that greatly enhances the mood of the song. And I like how soft and gentle it is. I don't think this track is about finding a big hook or something up front, it's all about the little sounds and flourishes peppered throughout. It's more fascinating than entertaining, which brings me to the big flaw: its length. 11 minutes is overstaying its welcome by quite a bit, in my opinion, but I "get it" in a sense, because it's going for mood. But as a roulette goes, you never know what kind of competition a submission will have, and unfortunately it seems this time you're the victim of the competition. So I really do like a lot about this track, but unfortunately it's less about not liking it and more about the flaws affecting this track more than others. Very sad to see you go because you've always brought something interesting to send and I really like that.
EDIT: Sacul correctly pointed out that he has two-round immunity as a two-time roulette champ of mine, therefore, he is not eliminated this round.

Who let the dogs out? This song is heavy as hell and has some great stuff going on, but I just want Corey Taylor to stop barking at me. I haven't heard anything by this band in over 10 years, so I'm not quite sure what I expected, honestly - but this is better than what I remember hearing back in the day. The hook is metal as fuck. I love the energy. But those kinds of vocals are just not pleasant. I'm sad you chose to flame out hard with this, but I also respect sending something you really loved. for the record, to stay in dacul needs to get at least 12 points with at least 3 of kwy, ruba, tac, and ruba scoring at most 4, 4, 5, and 7 points respectively - and has to win a tiebreaker if he scores only 12 points 10%. because the minimum possible score next round is 4.
dacul can also tie elite if elite scores 4 or 5 and dacul scores 15 or 16 (only 16 if elite scores 5).
this is assuming there's going to be 3 eliminations next round to make up for only 1 last round, at least.

The whole album is more on the pensive side (maybe that's what you were looking for?), but if you're looking for catchier material Violator's your jam. But Faith and Devotion and Ultra have plenty of gems on them as well.
For what I'll be sending, I'll have a favourite for now, but I'm also considering other options. I'm not a fan of open rounds.

As for the scoring, I'm not really sure what I'll do. Perhaps I will "number squish" in the three final rounds since the format is different, we'll see. I think I will only eliminate 1 person for rounds 6 and 7 because I want the end group to be a small set of survivors but not too small. I took some time this weekend to check out the Foxy Shazam record. It is interesting. "Killin' It" is my favorite song on the record, but I'm not quite sure what genres to categorize the album under which is refreshing and that's proving to be the most interesting music for me, when it's not solidly fitting into one genre in my head. Not sure if FS counts as ska or not, but that's what I got from the track "Bombs Away" for example, and with the horns in "Killin' It" that also gives me that impression. I really like the singer, he has a unique, eccentric voice (and most importantly it DOESN'T grate on my nerves). Singers with unique identifiable voices are my favorites, but can also be my least favorites (like Serj Tankian, can't stand him).
I'm really excited to check out the Ihlo record. I think the art of that album is the coolest I've seen from the two rounds yet, and that song - at least, to me - really complements the brisk fall weather that just arrived here, so that's a really good sign, can't wait to play it.

Definitely not giving up on them. Pensive is a good word to describe a lot of music I like, but I suppose in my head I was expecting something a bit more upbeat, not sure why. Catchier would be better. They're an artist I know I gotta dig into a bit more even though that song didn't have me begging for more.

Jinjer is getting a lot of play around here lately, and more power to them, but I'm just not getting it. The first couple tunes I heard (no idea what they are) were interesting; I'm not into the growls, but the woman CAN sing, and the clean parts were just amazing, but the last couple, eh. The clean vocals were far more processed, and dropping the hip-hop-y verses in is so 1995. I'm not sure why you'd be tapping into your inner Limp Bizkit at this stage of the game, but I'm not the artist, so... Then drop in a "blast beatz" section, which is more current, but still circa 2001 (for me; I am aware of some of the history of blast beats), and I guess it's just not for me.

No lie, I've only ever done writeups for my roulettes in Notepad. I just type the bbcode manually as I go. Now of course this is only my fault. I don't think I've ever used Google docs in my life, actually. I type absurdly fast so it's not really a big deal, just tedious that I have to re-type my thoughts. Unfortunately for you that means you'll probably be asleep by the time they're up. :lol

I learned a long time ago, CTRL + S / CMD + S is my second favorite keystroke - takes 0.2 seconds to save countless minute/hours of time. Nothing worse than losing 2 pages of brilliant thoughts on your thesis just 2 hours before it's due! :lolpalm:

This is the type of crisp, clean guitar sound that I LOVE in instrumental music. This reminds me a bit of a song called "Bellflower" from one of my favorite video games, Baten Kaitos. It's this gorgeous, vibrant acoustic sound that I don't know how else to describe. The bass tone is brilliant. The mood of the whole piece makes me think of a cool summer day, it's such a feel good mood. When I pick up my acoustic, I wish I could make sounds like this. This was so good I skimmed a couple Acoustic Alchemy albums, starting with this one. Even when it goes to distortion, it doesn't take away from the mood. Stellar track, seriously.

I own Figure 8, but this song is so beautiful - it's better than anything on that record. He's got a lovely, almost sheepish voice, and the lyrics are poetic. Short and sweet and, yeah, I need this album.

Every time I hear a Gorillaz song, it sounds different from all the others I've heard. I think I like this one most of all. Very pretty synth sounds and I love how it builds on that simple motif from start to finish but never gets to be so busy that it ruins the vibe it's going for. This is super chill. I actually think this would be best served on my shower playlist, strangely enough. Sounds like the perfect soundtrack for a Jamaican hotbox :lol I love this!

Honestly, this one started off really low but was the biggest grower of the round. I have a couple nitpicks, like how quiet it is for a while at the beginning and end, and it takes some time to really pick up, but that back half has some powerful, emotive singing. I didn't really appreciate it for a few days until it finally clicked - I think the way he sings in the louder parts reminds me of Caleb Followill from Kings of Leon and once I made that connection it's like a light bulb went off. Followed along with the lyrics and woo boy. Heartbreaking song. I was just talking with someone about how I prefer sappy/sad songs to angst and what the difference is, and this is a good example of what I like in a sad sounding song. I do have a tendency to choke up to certain sounding songs; I didn't quite shed a tear, but I did get a little misty in one of my recent listens. Powerful stuff.

I love the activity in this song, especially in the drums, and how it builds tension well - the hook is really good at that, generally that kind of rising melody leaves me hanging, but not here. I love that tight, slick bass line. Some really tasty synth bits peppered here and there (love the subtle piano behind the verses too). The rhythmic stuff in this song is pretty cool all around. Does this count as prog? Digging the vibe of this song a lot.

Definitely a delightful texture to the synths in this track. I was trying to figure out what this reminded me of, and I think it sounds like the fusion of God Is An Astronaut and maybeshewill, coincidentally two of my favorite post-rock groups (if you count maybeshewill as post-rock? I do... I'm not good with genres anymore). The very measured tension is something those bands do well and I think these guys do it well too based on this song.

You tricked me into spilling the beans right after you sent this to me! :lol No, this is pretty darn good. Like I said, strong Peter Gabriel vibes. There is some wacky instrumental stuff going on in this one, stuff just pops out of nowhere with sharp, loud sounds - but it's not a turnoff, it actually gives this track some charm. It's been on my brain all week, so good job.

I have a big celeb crush on TSwift despite not really knowing her music. She's a fucking babe.
I think this is the song where I draw the line between songs I really really like and songs that I like but lack a certain je ne sais quoi that makes them score higher. There are some basic bitch bubblegum pop melodies in this that I feel I've heard a million times growing up with my older sister and top 40 radio, but that "I'm drunk in the back of the car" hook just won't get out of my head and I love the mood of this song (and the beat is nice, too). I watched this music video a lot, so, thanks for worsening my celeb crush.

Hey, this is a fun rocker. The drums and guitar remind me of mid-period Toto, actually. Nothing too heavy or hard to listen to, just straight up rock with a feel good vibe. Really dig the lyrical theme here. I feel like I've heard this singer a lot before? Maybe he just has that stereotypical rock star voice but he's pretty good. This sounds like a 90s rock song that wasn't corrupted by the 90s vibe. It's got groove but it's not over the top which is cool. This was really fun to play while driving. So although it's not my favorite song this round - there's just a lot to go up against - I liked this and it grew on me. I actually got away with playing this at work this week and one of my coworkers even liked it :)

Despite the ranking, I do like this - I'm just having a hard time finding something I really like about it. It's not bad. The verses are really nice with the steady rise and fall of the melody and that cool drum beat, it reminds me a little of Mike Portnoy - I know he's a fan, maybe that has something to do with it. It's easy to say again that this song is a victim of its competition, it's almost a cliché at this point, but it's true. Got me interested in this band though, which is good!

If I'm being honest here, I neither like nor dislike most of this song, it just doesn't do much of anything for me. What I do like, however, is the instrumental section, and what the rest of the band does under the vocals in the back end of the track. Those really brief drum solos are dope, and I like the sense of melody with the keys throughout. I think if I was bigger on extravagant classic rock I would dig this more.

This was... surprising? I did not like this as soon as I heard the growls, but I let it play. I had to come back to it numerous times to be as fair as possible to the growls. While I don't like those, I like the woman's voice (is she doing the growls too? doesn't sound like it), and what saves this song is the halfway mark where it breaks down and gets soft. That's what I like most, especially her singing here. But overall... not sure this is really doing much for me. There are parts I like but I'm not itching to come back to this...

First of all, I *promise* this is not retribution for getting the boot in your roulette and it kind of bothers me that this is the song that gets last place :lol Okay, look, I'll be honest, I don't dislike this song, I just think it's too long for its own good. There's one section I quite like, it's "The Landlord's Daughter" section with that really fun triplet feel, the guitars and especially the keys are lively and going at it. But the lead-up to that, and basically everything after the 9 minute mark, kind of leave me restless and wanting more. It certainly isn't what I was expecting from The Decemberists (for some reason I was thinking indie/folk rock instead of prog folk, which is a wacky combination in my mind). I wish I liked this more because I know you really enjoy this, unfortunately it's just not clicking with me... sorry, bud, however, I appreciate the boldness of this submission!

Yup, that's Gorillaz for you. :lol The album that's from, Plastic Beach, is one of their most consistent in style and mood though. Some oddballs and more hip-hop focused songs too of course, but also a good amount of more nice shimmery electronic stuff like Empire Ants. I think you'd enjoy it.

For more Thunder I would recommend listening to the record where the song comes from, surprisingly titled Laughing On Judgement Days. Imo their best. But those Toto comparisons threw me of a little, don't hear that and that wasn't the reason I sent that song. But yes, Daniel Bowes is a hell of a singer with a very distinctive voice. And he still can bring it 30 years later.
Oh, and don't know about the tie-breaker. If you want to give them points, do it. If I go out in the next round it's not because of those points but because I didn't sent power metal I didn't sent a song good enough for your tastes.

There's a reason these 3 players are last and that's because they didn't score as well as the other. Free points for being in last place seems weird and even a little unfair given your rules.

Okay, I think I agree with y'all. No points for the tiebreaker as it seems to be the general consensus.
You can send for the next round if you'd like while I do the tiebreaker.
The EP, single artist compilation, and concept album rounds will be simply scored out of 10, instead of first place getting 16 etc.
Themed EP: no more than 40 minutes. Don't care if there's intro and outro tracks, interludes etc. but it needs to be themed somehow. I don't care what it's about and it doesn't matter if it's a loosely connected theme but the more obvious the theme the better. This round will have 7 participants, and 1 will be eliminated.
Single artist compilation: no more than 60 minutes, has to come from one artist exclusively, I don't care if there are demos, live tracks, b sides, just has to be one artist. Don't care if there's a theme. 6 participants, 1 will be eliminated.
Concept album: Theme matters here. No more than 80 minutes. Don't care how many or few artists you use or what songs or how you edit but the flow and concept really matter for this one. 5 players, 1 gets crowned champion.

Not a criticism, but just to point out that if there's quite a big spread of scores by the time you reach that point, this change will make it harder (maybe impossible) for lower-ranked people to catch up with higher-ranked. Although you might end up with 7 participants having scores quite close together, in which case it wouldn't matter.
Not sure it'll affect me anyway as on current trend I won't get that far. :P

I suppose you could call it that, yeah. I just avoided that term because perhaps some people would get the impression I want the artist's most popular or successful tracks, but really, the idea is to show me as much of the band as you want. So let's take Devin Townsend for example, if he wasn't banned, maybe someone would want to create an album where every song shows a different side of him, or maybe they would like to make an album showing off his heaviest songs, etc. Again there doesn't have to be a theme, but the idea of the round is to just show off why you chose that particular artist.

Hey, so... update. First, jingle is sending me the concept album he apparently already worked out for this roulette, so I'm going to listen to it and post my thoughts, but no score of course.
Second, this roulette is done and won't get restarted - I figure the next time I run a roulette, I'll just run a new one entirely.
Third, a commentary on the sheer amount of killer music sent in just 3 rounds. I keep playlists of every round in all my roulettes, and still have the albums saved from my first roulette. Gunship and VOLA are my two favorite artists sent, thanks to Cyril and Tomislav (and I think Buddyhunter and also Elite who sent VOLA in my 2nd roulette as well as this one). Cyril also sent the killer Foxy Shazam song, and although the album is hit or miss, that song is still one of my favorites. Stadler sent Jelly Roll by Blue Murder and that song still kicks ass. Bon Iver, Major Parkinson, Ihlo, The Comet Is Coming, Gary Moore, Michael Camilo, Lettuce, Los Lobotomys, Tori Amos, Acoustic Alchemy (who I've already heard 2 full albums by, simply phenomenal music that I can't get enough of), even Taylor Swift - SO MANY great songs, I have an exhausting, lengthy list of artists to dive into.
So I don't know when I'll run my next roulette, but it won't be with the intention of finding new artists to listen to, that's for sure. If anything, it's more likely to be one simply for the fun of it, because I'd like to run an all-EP roulette like TAC just did. Might not ever go back to the songs, but I'd love to see people's creativity. :)

This isn't so much of a story, but a cheap-ass way to get in a bunch of songs I'd tapped for the earlier themes/rounds. When you ended up loving The Night Flight Orchestra as much as you did, most of the songs that made my short-list to submit to you were neither prog, nor power, nor metal - despite the Arion submission (but that's because you needed introduction because of PPUSA). So, I'm hoping to appeal to you sense of good taste for old-school rock and roll, as well as variety, cuz you're in for a healthy dose of it. You asked for this - literally. You invariably know some of these songs, hell, some of them may have been banned in a traditional roulette, but in the context of this 'concept' - and now that we're outside the roulette, it don't matter. Honestly, I had more fun putting this one together - and more fun listening to it - than any other themed EP or concept.

Unique techniques like over-thinking, creating a list of possibilities longer than a Stadler PR post, ignoring your gut, ignoring your family to sample dozens of songs before submitting… everything you need to finish 2nd - otherwise known as first loser. Sunburst / Beyond the Darkest Sun - shockingly, they weren't on the banned list. Despite Vasilis Georgiou (who sounds like a reincarnated Roy Khan) handling the singing on the album , this is the best song on the album. We'll open with some prog-metal ripping, and that will be the end of the prog-metal
Mason Williams / Classical Gas - Time to funk it up. Be careful not to give yourself whiplash with the neck-bobbing that will ensue.
Focus / Hocus Pocus - Focus says "hold my beer" … NOW it's time to funk it up. Yodeling, FTW. And as Devin Townsend proclaimed to the audience aboard ProgNation at Sea in 2014 "This is going to be the most prog soundcheck ever. FLUTES, motherfuckers!"
Frank Mills / Piano Lesson #5 - Every young Canadian lad who ever took a few years of piano lessons, achieved their Grade 8 Conservatory accreditation, but then whose parents divorced and they turned into teenage dip-shits abandoning their talent for smoke (of all kind), skipping school, and outright rebellion (I've said too much)… well all those lads played a variety of Frank's compositions. This was the pinnacle achievement. <Author's note: I used to play the shit out of this tune. Give me a piano, and I probably have a good chunk of the muscle memory to still pull it off>
Harem Scarem / Mandy - Guitarist Pete Lesperance oozes emotion in this song for his younger cousin, who was suffering from leukemia at that time.

Ok… time for a 180 on the mood, and Canada is part of the world. The best part of the world. Poutine, maple syrup (it is one of the four food groups), Rush, Mooseknuckles (google it), Beavers (will show back up in Chapter 5) and Montreal strip clubs. For our purposes though, Canada gives you artists that are (tragically) largely unknown south of the 49th parallel. #MicDrop
Jerry Doucette / Mama Let Him Play - Jazz *is* much too crazy. Arpeggio's, motherfucker! Clap along. Advil might be needed for the neck-bobbing that will be uncontrollable.
Spirit of the West / Home for a Rest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crIk87-mPzY) - this is the drinking-section interlude. Whether it's 9am, or 9pm, the urge to crack a beer, or slap on a kilt and head down to the pub will be unavoidable. Give in to your feelings, padawan. It's worth it to watch the video at least once.
Kim Mitchell / I Am A Wild Party (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcClF730CLI) - when you invariably wonder, the line is "rah rah, ole!". In the 80s and 90s, Kim Mitchell was indeed the 'representation of this nation' - rude and crude, but he gave good thang.
Max Webster / The Party/The Hangover - this is a two-fer. These songs just cannot go one without the other. Cat's in the bag / the neighbors holler; cuz this party is higher / than the Eiffel tower
Barenaked Ladies / One Week - just try to keep up. Word-for-word, there likely isn't another song that packs as much into 3 minutes. Shit, even with the lyrics sheet it's hard to simply read-along. This slaps like no other.

Bob Seger / Turn the Page - do not EVER listen to the Metallica cover of this… it is tantamount to a crime against humanity.
INXS / Never Tear Us Apart - literally at a loss for words in what to say about this one. It's got a symphony, vocals, a cool little guitar riff, and an itty-bitty touch of sax.
Billy Vera & The Beaters / At This Moment - probably recorded in front of 14 people in a smoky nightclub at 4am in the morning. The mood and vibe fits the song magnificently. This will double dip back to Sentimental Blvd. Hold it together.
John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band / On The Dark Side - Time to snap out of it … it's another 'clap-along' after all. Every concept album should have a little beaver. :heybaby:
Jerry Rafferty / Baker Street - no sax theme could possibly be complete without this tune.. I mean, the saxophone IS the chorus and the chorus IS the saxophone. Surely it's not new to you, but you are a youngling (relatively speaking).

Well, I fuckin asked you about The Doors! As for the others, I honestly don't know which are 'regional' hits, and which aren't, and how much exposure Barenaked Ladies got in the US. I don't know how much classic rock radio you exposed yourself to - you are almost 20 years younger than me afterall.

I checked out this album because they were supposed to play ProgPower USA 2017. It was good! I just never went back to it for some reason. I vaguely recall this song, and I really liked this. It's lively and melodic and has lots of catchy patterns.

I should have warned that I am more picky and anal with sentimental songs than a lot of other stuff as the personal resonance is a very specific wavelength to match.

I'd be lying if I said this was anything other than simply okay. Her voice is okay, the hook is okay, the everything is just okay. Not really feeling any emotion from this, the lyrics don't resonate.

This is pretty sappy all right. I'm feeling the grief. What I'm not feeling is the loud shouting at me in what is supposed to be a sad song. That's just me, I don't enjoy the raspy yelling type of metal ballad. It is a strong ballad though.

4. Arthemis - If I Fall
I only know very early Arthemis, from when they only had a couple albums out. Always felt Andrea (and co) saved their best work for Power Quest, personally. Arthemis always felt rather B-list power metal if I'm being honest. But this is better than what I remember. I feel bad not following up with Andrea's work after he split from Power Quest. This is a nice song. Not blowing me away, but has me curious about the band again.

I knew the hook sounded familiar. I've heard that a whole mess of times, but I've never heard any of the rest of the song. This is fun. It really has this Randy Newman vibe with the dirty but simple riff and the unique vocal delivery. I like that, it's really hard to find. I like this. Stadler, though? I'm not quite sure I could peg him as an Elvis Costello fan. I could be wrong, though.

I'm willing to bet Stadler digs this as well, he probably jams this between KISS and Yes sessions.

Okay, pretty sure *everybody* knows this song. It's just a damn good folk song with some memorable lyrics and melodies. What's not to like? I bet Stadler likes this song, but doesn't listen to it often. I guess I could deal with a longer instrumental section, like in that cool metal version of the song in Guitar Hero 3.

The Doors are confounding to me. Do not like the majority of Manzarek's keyboards, and I think Jim Morrison is WAY over-rated. I do like some tunes - I heard Page and Plant do a killer snippet of "Break On Through" and both Kiss and Pearl Jam have copped the solo to "Five To One". But this song? No slap. :tdwn
