Not a fan of Barenaked Ladies.

The band, the BAND!

Do love Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street, though; one of my favorite songs of all time ever.

BTW, there are ten songs in this list that I am either very familiar with - or at least very familiar with one particular part. Some might surprise you! :neverusethis:

10??  Wow.  Color me surprised.  I figured maybe 4 or 5.

Give 'em an O, and that should finish off at least 2 of them.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

This isn't so much of a story, but a cheap-ass way to get in a bunch of songs I'd tapped for the earlier themes/rounds.  When you ended up loving The Night Flight Orchestra as much as you did, most of the songs that made my short-list to submit to you were neither prog, nor power, nor metal - despite the Arion submission (but that's because you needed introduction because of PPUSA).  So, I'm hoping to appeal to you sense of good taste for old-school rock and roll, as well as variety, cuz you're in for a healthy dose of it.  You asked for this - literally.  You invariably know some of these songs, hell, some of them may have been banned in a traditional roulette, but in the context of this 'concept' - and now that we're outside the roulette, it don't matter.  Honestly, I had more fun putting this one together - and more fun listening to it - than any other themed EP or concept.

Introduction
Step-by-step instructions on how NOT to win a Roulette (since it's been like 6 years since I won anything), follow along closely.  Unique techniques like over-thinking, creating a list of possibilities longer than a Stadler PR post, ignoring your gut, ignoring your family to sample dozens of songs before submitting… everything you need to finish 2nd - otherwise known as first loser.  Start by examining the OP from the host.  Look for clues - you'll think they will give you an advantage, when in fact, they'll mean nothing.

Chapter 1: Post vocal

"Instrumental music with pep and vibrancy to the music is my jam."

Singing is over-rated.

Sunburst / Beyond the Darkest Sun - shockingly, they weren't on the banned list.  Despite Vasilis Georgiou (who sounds like a reincarnated Roy Khan) handling the singing on the album , this is the best song on the album.  We'll open with some prog-metal ripping, and that will be the end of the prog-metal
Mason Williams / Classical Gas - Time to funk it up.  Be careful not to give yourself whiplash with the neck-bobbing that will ensue.
Focus / Hocus Pocus - Focus says "hold my beer" … NOW it's time to funk it up.  Yodeling, FTW.  And as Devin Townsend proclaimed to the audience aboard ProgNation at Sea in 2014 "This is going to be the most prog soundcheck ever.  FLUTES, motherfuckers!"
Frank Mills / Piano Lesson #5 - Every young Canadian lad who ever took a few years of piano lessons, achieved their Grade 8 Conservatory accreditation, but then whose parents divorced and they turned into teenage dip-shits abandoning their talent for smoke (of all kind), skipping school, and outright rebellion (I've said too much)… well all those lads played a variety of Frank's compositions.  This was the pinnacle achievement. <Author's note: I used to play the shit out of this tune.  Give me a piano, and I probably have a good chunk of the muscle memory to still pull it off>
Harem Scarem / Mandy - Guitarist Pete Lesperance oozes emotion in this song for his younger cousin, who was suffering from leukemia at that time.

And we carry that emotion into…

Chapter 2: Sentimental Blvd

"Sentimental and pensive is the key to my heart"

Time to unlock the front entrance, and brace for a tsunami.  To steal the lyrics from the song of the same name of this chapter (which coincidentally precedes "Mandy" on the album Mood Swings by Harem Scarem):

You can never run away too far
   Cause people get lost
   On Sentimental Blvd.
It's better not to wait too long
   Cause feelings get lost
   On Sentimental Blvd.
   We get older
And wonder where the time has gone

Sass Jordan / Stranger than Paradise - From her debut album, before she really embraced a blues-rock style.  Oh, and google image her.  Humana humana humana humana humana
Poison / Theater of My Soul - don't knock it 'til you've tried it.  Play on child.
Silent Call / Our Last Goodbye - sorry.  <Author's note: Seriously, I had these tracks picked out before October 13th>
Arthemis / If I Fall - ditto
Shania Twain / From This Moment - written as a tribute to her parent's love, who were tragically killed in a car accident when she was in her early 20s.  She was trying to launch her career in Nashville, and ended up moving back home to northern Ontario to support her two younger siblings with no income.  Shania's story is rather remarkable. <Author's note … this was my wedding song, and still chokes me up every time I listen to it.>

And continuing the trend, we seamlessly transition from a Canadian artist into …

Chapter 3: All the world's a stage / Canadiana

"World music. Fuck yeah"

Ok… time for a 180 on the mood, and Canada is part of the world.  The best part of the world.  Poutine, maple syrup (it is one of the four food groups), Rush, Mooseknuckles (google it), Beavers (will show back up in Chapter 5) and Montreal strip clubs.  For our purposes though, Canada gives you artists that are (tragically) largely unknown south of the 49th parallel.  #MicDrop

Jerry Doucette / Mama Let Him Play - Jazz *is* much too crazy.  Arpeggio's, motherfucker!  Clap along.  Advil might be needed for the neck-bobbing that will be uncontrollable.
Spirit of the West / Home for a Rest - this is the drinking-section interlude.  Whether it's 9am, or 9pm, the urge to crack a beer, or slap on a kilt and head down to the pub will be unavoidable.  Give in to your feelings, padawan.  It's worth it to watch the video at least once.
Kim Mitchell / I Am A Wild Party - when you invariably wonder, the line is "rah rah, ole!".  In the 80s and 90s, Kim Mitchell was indeed the 'representation of this nation' - rude and crude, but he gave good thang.
Max Webster / The Party/The Hangover - this is a two-fer.  These songs just cannot go one without the other. Cat's in the bag / the neighbors holler; cuz this party is higher / than the Eiffel tower
Barenaked Ladies / One Week - just try to keep up.  Word-for-word, there likely isn't another song that packs as much into 3 minutes.  Shit, even with the lyrics sheet it's hard to simply read-along.  This slaps like no other.

And now the Chapter that inspired this book and concept ….

Chapter 4: Slap it like Stadler

I mean, there's really nothing else to say about these tunes other than the fact that they slap.  Slap hard they do.

Elvis Costello / Pump It Up - turn it up.
Uriah Heep / Easy Livin - heehee, from the album Demons and Wizards.
Cheap Trick / Dream Police - yes, they have tunes other than I Want You to Want Me
Charlie Daniels Band / The Devil Went Down to Georgia - Violin, motherfucker
The Doors / Touch Me - actually, don't.

As if that wasn't enough saxaphone for you ….

Chapter 5: Saxin you Later

"Saxophone makes everything better."

Let's put that to the test.

Bob Seger / Turn the Page - do not EVER listen to the Metallica cover of this… it is tantamount to a crime against humanity.
INXS / Never Tear Us Apart - literally at a loss for words in what to say about this one.  It's got a symphony, vocals, a cool little guitar riff, and an itty-bitty touch of sax.
Billy Vera & The Beaters / At This Moment - probably recorded in front of 14 people in a smoky nightclub at 4am in the morning.  The mood and vibe fits the song magnificently.  This will double dip back to Sentimental Blvd.  Hold it together.
John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band / On The Dark Side - Time to snap out of it … it's another 'clap-along' after all. Every concept album should have a little beaver.  :heybaby:
Jerry Rafferty / Baker Street - no sax theme could possibly be complete without this tune.. I mean, the saxophone IS the chorus and the chorus IS the saxophone.  Surely it's not new to you, but you are a youngling (relatively speaking).

Well, I fuckin asked you about The Doors!  As for the others, I honestly don't know which are 'regional' hits, and which aren't, and how much exposure Barenaked Ladies got in the US.  I don't know how much classic rock radio you exposed yourself to - you are almost 20 years younger than me afterall.

If this was a real roulette round, and you kibosh'd those, I could've found replacements.  If you want them, give me a few days to re-find... as I deleted the file I was keeping after I sent this.

So I decided to score this in the end for giggles. I'll post these in parts. It's kind of a mess 'cause I'm too lazy to get anal about formatting

Chapter 1: Post Vocal

1. Sunburst - Beyond the Darkest Sun

I checked out this album because they were supposed to play ProgPower USA 2017. It was good! I just never went back to it for some reason. I vaguely recall this song, and I really liked this. It's lively and melodic and has lots of catchy patterns.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 4.5

2. Mason Williams - Classical Gas

I used to play this song with my drummer friend in jazz band during breaks, so I know this very well. It's a fun little tune, but not a favorite of mine. Almost made me think Indiscipline sent this.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 3/5
Score: 4.0

3. Focus - Hocus Pocus

Ballsy submission, but exactly the kind of stuff I like! I've known this one for many years. The video is a favorite of mine. Great song - I love the gibberish, whistling, the silliness, everything about it.

Thematic fit: 4.5/5 (vocals!)
Personal enjoyment: 5/5
Score: 4.75

4. Frank Mills - Piano Lesson #5

This is a nice piece. It has a really lighthearted vibe. I can see this being a fun one to play.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 3.5/5
Score: 4.25

Harem Scarem - Gorgeous piece, lovely guitar tone and phrasing, fantastic. If they have more pieces like this I'd love to hear them.

Thematic Score: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 5/5
Score: 5.0

Chapter 2: Sentimental Blvd

I should have warned that I am more picky and anal with sentimental songs than a lot of other stuff as the personal resonance is a very specific wavelength to match.

1. Sass Jordan - Stranger Than Paradise

I'd be lying if I said this was anything other than simply okay. Her voice is okay, the hook is okay, the everything is just okay. Not really feeling any emotion from this, the lyrics don't resonate.

Thematic fit:  2.5/5
Personal enjoyment: 2/5
Score: 2.75

2. Poison - Theater of the Soul

You know how Guns N' Roses did two versions of Don't Cry, each with different lyrics? This sounds exactly like Every Rose Has Its Thorn, but not as good. I'm not feeling this at all.

Thematic fit: 4.5/5
Personal enjoyment: 2/5
Score: 3.25

3. Silent Call - Our Last Goodbye

This is pretty sappy all right. I'm feeling the grief. What I'm not feeling is the loud shouting at me in what is supposed to be a sad song. That's just me, I don't enjoy the raspy yelling type of metal ballad. It is a strong ballad though.

Thematic fit: 4.5/5
Personal enjoyment: 3.5/5
Score: 4.0

4. Arthemis - If I Fall

I only know very early Arthemis, from when they only had a couple albums out. Always felt Andrea (and co) saved their best work for Power Quest, personally. Arthemis always felt rather B-list power metal if I'm being honest. But this is better than what I remember. I feel bad not following up with Andrea's work after he split from Power Quest. This is a nice song. Not blowing me away, but has me curious about the band again.

Thematic fit: 4.5/5
Personal enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 4.25

5. Shania Twain - From This Moment

Lovely song, I know this one well. I almost played it for my sister's wedding, I know friends who used this for their wedding, I still have the sheet music somewhere around here. Nothing fancy, nothing terribly impressive, just a beautiful love song, great choice.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 5/5
Score: 5.0

Chapter 3: All The World's A Stage / Canadiana

Y'know, when I meant world music, I was thinking something else entirely, but I'll roll with it. Blame Canada.

1. Jerry Doucette - Mama Let Him Play

I'd be lying if I said this left any sort of impression on me. It's not bad, it's just inoffensive and not compelling to me. Good playing though. Blame Canada~

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 3/5
Score: 4

2. Spirit of the West - Home for a Rest

This is fun! Really free and wild folk rock. Probably a weird comparison to make but I think of Mick Jagger when I hear the singer. Not something I'd put on personally, but this is interesting, would make for a good drinking song. Blame Canada~

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 4.5

3. Kim Mitchell - I Am A Wild Party

This song has a strange vibe, man. WTF @ the hook especially. That is some ultra game show sounding stuff with that Mattel-brand keyboard patch. This could be fun in a bar or club setting I suppose but boy I have some questions for whoever thought that keyboard moment was a good songwriting decision - really ruins this song. Blame Canada~

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 2.5/5
Score: 3.75

4. Max Webster - The Party

Okay, this is a really good 'fun party rock song.' I get the vibe, I'm down with it, all that. I'm just not that into it. Thematically it's great, it's a fun Canadian rock song that I've never heard of. I just... don't like it, sorry bud. Blame Canada~

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 2/5
Score: 3.5

5. Barenaked Ladies - One Week

I remember this song being everywhere in the late 90s. I seemed to hear this all over the radio and TV. I always really disliked this song but I never listened to it in full. It's a weird fucking tune, dude. The vibe is just weird. The hook is so catchy but so annoying. Blame Canada~

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 2.5/5
Score: 3.75

Chapter 4: Slap it like Stadler

In which I base the theme score entirely on guessing whether or not Stadler thinks these songs do or do not slap.

1. Elvis Costello - Pump It Up

I knew the hook sounded familiar. I've heard that a whole mess of times, but I've never heard any of the rest of the song. This is fun. It really has this Randy Newman vibe with the dirty but simple riff and the unique vocal delivery. I like that, it's really hard to find. I like this. Stadler, though? I'm not quite sure I could peg him as an Elvis Costello fan. I could be wrong, though.

Thematic fit: 4/5
Personal enjoyment: 4.5/5
Score: 4.25

2. Uriah Heep - Easy Livin'

You had to pick a song from the one Uriah Heep album I own and enjoy. This is one of the best songs on the album, but it's not quite as good as The Wizard to me. Still, those vocal harmonies, that urgent rhythm, this is a fucking great classic rock song, awesome submission. I'm willing to bet Stadler digs this as well, he probably jams this between KISS and Yes sessions.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 5/5
Score: 5.0

3. Cheap Trick - Dream Police

Cheap Trick is to me what Toto is to TAC, so in honor of the Great Shopping Cart Outlaw, as he says, "This blows." Seriously, the only song I hate more than this is Surrender. I know Stadler loves Cheap Trick though. I hope both of you get new hearing aids for Christmas. :lol

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 1/5
Score: 3.0

4. Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down To Georgia

Okay, pretty sure *everybody* knows this song. It's just a damn good folk song with some memorable lyrics and melodies. What's not to like? I bet Stadler likes this song, but doesn't listen to it often. I guess I could deal with a longer instrumental section, like in that cool metal version of the song in Guitar Hero 3.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 4.5

5. The Doors - Touch Me

Yeah, I know all of The Doors' hits, and this is a great song. It has that game show sound in the hook but it's not ridiculous sounding. I fucking love his voice and I'm really embarrassed I've never actually taken the time to listen to a full Doors record. I need to fix that. I bet Stadler likes The Doors, yeah?

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 5/5
Score: 5.0

Chapter 1 score: 22.50 (out of possible 25)
Chapter 2 score: 19.25

Chapter 5: Saxin' You Later

1. Bob Seger - Turn the Page

I hear this song almost every damn day at work. I've heard it so many times that it's just background noise now. I actually dig the Metallica cover too, but the original is nice. I'm just tired of hearing it so much.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 3.5/5
Score: 4.25

2. INXS

Is this a cover of a 50s rock song? No joke, it kind of sounds like it. It's not bad! Not blowing me away though. INXS is a name I've heard of but never got curious about, and this doesn't change my opinion too much. Not shabby though, the sax is good.

Thematic fit: 4/5
Personal enjoyment: 3.5/5
Score: 3.75

3. Billy Vera & The Beaters - At This Moment

One of the best of the round, although I'd be lying again if I said it was impressing me. It's got a nice buildup and some great saxophone, though, so I enjoyed this one a bit more than the others.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 4.5/5
Score: 4.75

4. John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band - On the Dark Side

It's brief and to the point! Almost disappointingly short, actually. I love the upbeat vibe. Nice sax playing. Not really doing much for me, but it's fun! I like it. Doesn't overstay its welcome at all.

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 3.5/5
Score: 4.25

5. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

Definitely knew this one when that awesome sax line came in. Never knew the name of the song, so cheers for that. The verses are just okay, but the rest of the song is where the magic is. Really good tune!

Thematic fit: 5/5
Personal enjoyment: 4/5
Score: 4.5

Chapter 1 score: 22.50 (out of possible 25)
Chapter 2 score: 19.25
Chapter 3 score: 19.50
Chapter 4 score: 21.75
Chapter 5 score: 21.50

Concept playlist average: 20.9 / 25.0

Nicely done jingle! Lots of effort went into this and I'm thankful you shared it with me even if not everything resonated very well.

In which I base the theme score entirely on guessing whether or not Stadler thinks these songs do or do not slap.

In acknowledgment of that:

1. Elvis Costello - Pump It Up
Stadler, though? I'm not quite sure I could peg him as an Elvis Costello fan. I could be wrong, though.

You are not wrong; not a huge fan of Declan McManus, but, this song DOES slap.   :tup

2. Uriah Heep - Easy Livin'
I'm willing to bet Stadler digs this as well, he probably jams this between KISS and Yes sessions.

Hmmm.  Not the hugest Uriah Heep fan in the world, but like you, this is as good as it gets.  Slaps.   :tup

3. Cheap Trick - Dream Police
I know Stadler loves Cheap Trick though. I hope both of you get new hearing aids for Christmas. :lol

Makes me question everything about you.  Cheap Trick is one of the best bands ever (not really exaggerating). And while this isn't their best song (not even the best song on the album) it does in fact, slap.   :tup

4. Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down To Georgia
I bet Stadler likes this song, but doesn't listen to it often.

You actually nailed it; I like the song, but it's not a song I go to very often.  I like Charlie the man, but if I want southern rock I go to the Allman's or Lynyrd Skynyrd.   Give it a slap, though.   :tup

5. The Doors - Touch Me
I bet Stadler likes The Doors, yeah?

The Doors are confounding to me.  Do not like the majority of Manzarek's keyboards, and I think Jim Morrison is WAY over-rated.   I do like some tunes - I heard Page and Plant do a killer snippet of "Break On Through" and both Kiss and Pearl Jam have copped the solo to "Five To One".  But this song?  No slap.    :tdwn

Either there is a typo or your math is wrong on Baker Street, though.  Those should be "6's".

*snip - Stadler's review*

I'll take the 4 out of 5 slaps!

Thanks for the review there Mike  :tup.  Now if only Puppies would get to it too!  :orly:
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

:lol It was fun, Chad! Although to be perfectly honest I think your best stuff is in the realm of prog/prog-power metal. My favorite stuff you show me tends to be along those lines. This was a really nice departure though with a wide variety of good shiznit.

Also, damn you, Stadler. You got it backwards. Cheap Trick is definitely cheap, but those keyboards in The Doors are rich.
