First show of the tour. Who will be there?
I booked a roadtrip from Holland to portugal so looking forward meeting you all.
Take care,
Jeroen
Unfortunately I don't know if I can go to the show yet, although I really want to... I'll post here, maybe in a month, as I get to know my uni schedule.
I plan on flying down to Porto. I could not wait for my February dates to come, so I decided to buy a ticket for the opening show
Cool man. Maybe we can catch up in Porto?
Jeroen
6 days to go. So who will actually be there? Anyone fancy providing live setlist updates?

Sorry no live updates from me. I will be busy recording
I will be there for their last rehearsL day plus opening night. Will keep you updated. :-)
3 days to go! going to be there too
Tomorrow I'm flying to Porto. Can't wait to see both the rehearsals and the show!
How did you manage to catch the rehearsal?!?!?!!?!
Because of my connection with JR. Will do a last check of sound levels during the rehearsal tonight.

Anyone wanna give us a live setlist tomorrow? I remember it was happening on the ADTOE tour and it was exciting to follow along!
I'm hoping keys76 should be able to keep us posted.
According to the website of the venue (https://www.coliseudoporto.pt/index.php?view=details&id=849:dream-theater&option=com_eventlist&Itemid=152&lang=en) the show begins at 9:30 PM and it's estimated to be 2 hours long with no intermission. Of course estimations are just predictions, but isn't the showtime pretty late for a 3-hour concert?
I don't think the venue has any idea :lol
It'll probably start around 8.15pm local time.

Just arrived at the Hotel. Wow....we're in for a treat!!! Gonna try to post the setlist during tomorrow's concert. Band sounds great, production looks awesome!!!
Sweet man, I appreciate it greatly in advance!!!! Can't wait to see what they play!!!
Guys, I'm from Oporto and tomorrow I will see them... again xD
I need some help... HOW CAN I FOUND THEM ON THE STREETS OF THE CITY?
Any help? What do the guys like to do? What places they usually visit? I would love to see petrucci and hug him :)
Boa noite Spikno7. I don't think this is an easy task...O Porto is a big city!
The only member I think walks around cities during the tours would be Jordan, and how would you know where to find him!?!?!

How many hours out are we from show time?
Yeah, how many minutes to Psycho?
The website of the venue still lists the showtime as 9:30 PM (GMT), which is a bit over 10 and a half hours from now. Can someone going to the show confirm this?
I'm guessing we're around 9 hours from show time.
I'm very excited!! And Frostbitez, you never let us down! :D

I'm pretty sure every show will be. Bands tend to play later in mainland Europe, so a 9/9.30 start is feasible, but I still wouldn't be surprised if the show actually began earlier than that.

If you're out and about and can't check the forum very easily, I will be posting updates on the DTF Twitter and Facebook pages.
Looking forward to it. Thanks everyone for the updates!
It sounds like the show is starting around 3-4 PM in my time zone, so I will be up. I'm surprised I was able to sleep last night knowing that DT is starting their world tour, in another continent no less! I think I might be a fanboy. :blush Thanks again to anyone posting updates.

Show starts at 9.30 which is in 3h and 45 minutes. Been there this afternoon and in front of me now is the setlist. Ohhh my f#$cking God!
^^ Great job with teasing us there with that last statement. You have my (and probably everyone else's) interest now.
Correction to my time posting. I used the DT site which said 8PM CET not realizing Porto is in WET. So whooops.

I'd be annoyed if my work was spoiled only hours before it's shown, and I don't think the band would be happy about the setlist being revealed hours beforehand either. During the show though? Bring it on!

To be clear, I'm not saying he SHOULD do that. I'm just clarifying that what was posted as a preference is certainly not a forum rule. In general, spoilers are permitted (and should be expected) in this sub-forum. That's all.
And, yes, I also agree that the best course is to show restraint and NOT post that before the show starts.
I'm afraid I'm using my phone so cant link you up, but @ThomasPasieka on Twitter states that his videos and artwork and being played on the 'video wall' on this tour.

Well if you count in the intermission, plus the pause between the end of the second set and the encore, plus i'm sure the show's like 3 or 4 minutes longer than 3 hours when you count for breaks in between songs/James talking, It'll probably be 100% over at almost 1am O.o
This is a gruesome tour schedule...they play O Porto tonight, Madrid tomorrow, Pamplona the next day and Barcelona on Saturday! I wonder how James' voice will hold up.

Wow, 12:30am is a late finish when you have to fly to Madrid the next day and play another 3 hour show!
Well if you count in the intermission, plus the pause between the end of the second set and the encore, plus i'm sure the show's like 3 or 4 minutes longer than 3 hours when you count for breaks in between songs/James talking, It'll probably be 100% over at almost 1am O.o
Wow, thats crazy... I wonder why the show is starting so late then? And I'm kinda wondering if the set will actually be a full ...Evening With... length set like they have done previously. Anyone know what curfew is in Porto?

Same here. I'm flying over to Cali for the Riverside show and that starts a full 90 min before the show tonight does :lol
15 MINUTES
I wonder how they'll make it to the next cities with the shows finishing this late...my train to Pamplona leaves at 07:30 on Friday - I have to take the first train in order to make it to the Meet & Greet.
I am in and paciently waiting alongside a mostly chatty crowd. It's 15 minutes to Psycho now. I won't be updating the forum because that takes a lot away from the enjoyment of the show. Hopefully someone else will. The venue is nicely packed by the way.

YES. I really like TSF, but TGP would be fucking amazing.

Purely a guess, but my best guess is: Hold the last chord of TEI until it starts to feedback, and then just start the "chugga, chugga, chugga" of The Shattered Fortress at full volume rather than as a fade-in.

What I find surprising is that OTBOA is so early in the setlist. I thought they would have separated it from The Enemy Inside, seeing as they're the two Grammy songs.

I love how so far, all of the DT12 have been played in order, just not next to each other. I wonder if that will continue for the rest of the show?
That's how most bands normally spread out their new album from all the shows i've seen/seen setlists of, including DT. FAS and TEI are next to each other, but that was designed that way.
I say The Bigger Picture will be the last DT12 song in Set 1.
EDIT: maybe not always in order, but usually evenly spread out lol

I'm going with a slower song next. Maybe TBP or a small Awake anniv. bit with A Mind Beside Itself?

I expected that to be played later, interesting!

Holy hell that is a pretty kickass set. Really interesting choices, nothing like I was expecting in the slightest. Here's hoping set 2 is just as adventurous.
So the first set comes in at 75 minutes?
I did not expect anything from ADToE

I would expect that it will close one of the two sets. Wouldn't surprise me if they closed the first set instead of having it close the show at the end of the second (before the encore). It also wouldn't surprise me if it
opened the second set.
EDIT: Well, I guess it isn't closing the first set. :lol
Very interesting that the first set relied SO heavily on new material from the last two albums only (only one exception). Wild guess: second set will be almost entirely older material.
All very safe stuff for JLB so far I notice.. Not surprising considering the show lengths and grueling tour schedule
Nothing earlier than FII yet. Hmmmmm
And only one song before 2009. Hmmmmm

I more or less meant as a closer for the FIRST set, since we had only seen that much so far.

There's 80 minutes left of show + encore, and half of that will be DT12. So I'm betting for 5 songs beside DT12: 1 from IW, 1 from Awake, 1 from SDOIT, 1 from ToT/Octavarium and 1 from SFAM.

I wish i had one Mark V
I used to have one.
Wow, really? Why don't you have it now?
Sold it for an Axe-FX, it was just more practical and it completely nails the Mark series tone and feel (I'm not exaggerating, it really does)
Anyway, off topic :P
Encore with LTL, Metropolis, TTT and Surrounded incoming.

How does the drumkit look like on this tour? I guess the setup is pretty much the same as always.

GREAT song! Nice to hear it in there...really wondering if they do SDV now, where it would fit in?
Wow, starting to get extremely disappointed with the over abundance of two albums. DT12 I understand, but (even with the anniversary) Awake too?
:hefdaddy for LSOAD. Now StR and something from IaW.
11 songs in (not counting FAS), and only 4 albums have been played....
I'm doubting they'll play all of DT12 now, unless the sets even longer than expected.
I saw that one in setlist.fm... I was so excited for Scarred
edit: What the hell? someone put Mike Portnoy drum solo
So maybe Scarred followed by SDV next?
Quote from: VincentMDO on January 15, 2014, 03:18:20 PM

I am surprised. But given the anniversary, it looks like they are paying homage by giving it heavy rotation. SDV is looking more and more likely.

4 songs from Awake, looks like the second half will be played tonight and MAYBE the whole album at an upcoming tour date?
If they follow with SDV, they'll have played the entire second half of the album!

Awake is my favorite album so I'm extremely happy.
I love Awake but...Is there gonna be room for other albums plus DT12?
I'm thinking the encore is 1 or 2 I&W songs, but hopefully not Metropolis and/or PMU.
Calling it now that we'll get something like this to close out the first set before the encore:
13. SDV
14. Behind the Veil
15. TSCO
16. Illumination Theory
Total madness!!!
Act 2 of SFAM coming up, then IT as encore/closer?
Maybe, they may play Awake in its entirety, here.
I can see why the first set was so gentle on JLB now. This second set will really be testing him. VERY interested to see how well he is performing

After Scarred finishes, probably an hour and ten minutes.
The moment you have all been waiting for......
Counting that they will play IT, 20min left: 1 song from DT12 and maybe 2 from earlier albuns. Or maybe just DT12.
Quote from: genome on January 15, 2014, 03:26:30 PM

The Killing Hand must be back. It's been too long.

Doubtful, but I'd like to see them rotate the 2nd half of Awake with Act 2 of SFAM.
Also, if they follow-up SDV with, say, "This Dying Soul", then follow up Act 2 of SFAM with "The Glass Prison". It would be amazing.

Surprised at how Awake heavy the set-list is (not a fan of this album). Would have figured more SFAM as a better fit for a cinematic feel to compliment DT12. Thrilled at TSF being there. Yeah. this comes off as a bit odd to me.
I know its the 20th Anniversary of Awake, but damn I wanted to hear some I&W, SDOIT or SFAM... :/
Thanks J!
I thought SDV wasn't going to be played live without Kevin Moore?
I'll be honest, I saw both the SDOIT and SFAM tours, whereas I missed the Awake tour. I personally am totally stoked by this turn of events.....

Well, now I know the encore at least. ;D

I've lost the encore message, and I CANNOT WAIT ANYMORE
So what he posted as encore was correct? Kinda like telling a kid what he's getting for christmas :( Guess i'm off to bed now then
I would like him to clarify what the "extended guitar solo" was. An outro to Space-Dye Vest? Or an intro to Illumination Theory?

Things are bit more... democratic... now.
This setlist is pleasing to my eyes.
I will gladly take the 5 Awake songs for that encore. But 5 albums for the whole show seems a little weird. On the legs after the first European/North American legs I'm they'll diversify it while adding BTV/TBP/StR.

I would expect a tiny bit of rotation... I can't see them going the whole world tour without playing an Images and Words song.
What a bizarre setlist...
No second epic :(
I'm not really happy with this set... Hope its going to change a bit for tomorrows show (Madrid).
I expected more variety. Scarred is good, SDV is good, LSOAD is good, The mirror and lie are good... But all together is not as good as i expected. Bad decision putting backs of angels, cause its pretty similar to Enemy inside...
All I can say is...
I Am not missing this tour.
I have to say, feeling a LITTLE disappointed with the second set. I was fine with one album anniversary, but two? Still a great set, but I hope this is a special thing and they only play one anniversary for most shows. I was hoping for 1 or 2 more DT12 songs, and maybe a SDOIT song.

Yeah i wish there was a song from I&W and Six Degrees
Maybe there's an I&W song after the SFAM encore (Metropolis?)
Totally stoked with the set, though I do expect to see a bit of rotation as well. (if they take out Shattered Fortress though, shit's gonna burn on Market St.)
Kinda wished either 8vm or TCOT would be there, since I have yet to see either, but it's not like they're playing my birthday party or anything.......yet.....
I hope there's some setlist rotation too, because that setlist doesn't do anything for me personally. No IAW (yet?), yet again my favourite DT album is neglected, and only 1 song in my top 20 DT songs, plus 4 of my bottom 10.
But it is nice that they're celebrating 2 anniversaries, I just think it's made it a bit unbalanced when they have an Evening With show to cover everything.

3 sets or is this the encore?
This is the encore.
2nd encore?
I'm very happy with the setlist, even though I do expect a little rotation as I said. I've seen Dream Theater twice, and out of the 18 songs on the setlist I have not seen 15 of them before.
Whoa... Not what I would have chosen, but...pretty cool!

Just this is worth the plane ride across the country and cost of admission.
2 Instrumentals? Either the band is really celebrating anniversaries of albums or other set lists will be heavy on other albums. TBP and BTV please.
Quote from: genome on January 15, 2014, 02:18:19 PM
I expect maybe more than one instrumental tonight? Looking at their touring schedule, they could do with the odd break for James' voice.
Enigma Machine definitely, and maybe TDOE?
Can I just say... I called it :coolio
I'm thinking they'll keep this set for all of the European leg, maybe a little alteration for the NA leg (DONT GET RID OF DoE), and then after that they'll have a lot of changes made. Since they won't be Evening With... shows, i'd expect maybe 2 songs from each album plus some other songs from the 7 albums ( ???) that weren't played tonight.

VERY STRANGE setlist! Two songs from ADTOE? Why? They played the entire album on their last tour. I could do without either. Large "pockets" of Awake & SFAM? The songs are all awesome (aside from SDV, but since it's never been played, I like it in the set, even though I don't like the song), but just a strange way to present if they're not gonna just do the whole thing. IMO, the only really cool stuff is the new songs and TSF being played. Most of all, NOTHING from I&W, WDADU, 6DOIT, TOT, 8V or SC? WTH?
BUT, I'm certainly lad the tour has begun :metal

Very interesting setlist! Surprised that only 6 albums were represented tonight, but I guess with the Awake and SFaM anniversaries, it makes sense. I'm curious to know if the songs were played like the album versions or were there any changes, whether minor or significant other than MM doing a drum solo in EM.

There is one other show that did not have any IaW songs in the setlist that I am aware of, because MP had brought it to my attention after a game of "what makes this setlist significant?" The show in question was the Washington DC ProgNation 2009 show. And actually, not only was it a show without any IaW songs, but it consisted strictly of JR-era songs. Incidentally, MP had not written the setlist that way intentionally (so that it was just JR-era tracks) but that's how it came out. Anyhoo, back to tonight's show....

Thanks to Setlist Scotty for the facts! Not being a regular DT show, you could even possibly discount that. That certainly makes this setlist unique.
They're definitely not going to stick with this set for the entire touring of DT12. The other 3 DT12 songs will be played, as well as some from every other album, including probably most of I&W. I can see them performing the rest of the SFAM/Awake songs as well.
I'm extremely sad. I was hoping for the return of any of the following: In the Name of God, Octavarium, A Change of Seasons, The Killing Hand.
I love these songs on their own, but I like variety in a concert setlist. Mostly everyone else seems pretty happy. Am I alone in my sadness?
This apparently is the Awake/SFAM/DT12 tour. Sorry for being a debby-downer for those who loved the set.
Plus, how boring would it be for them to play for 3 hours, every night, with the same songs, in the same order? I can't see it.

But...dude...I mean, no set list is going to make everyone 100% happy. But come on! If you like a lot of those songs, what is there to be sad about? They are obviously trying to do something cool by promoting two important anniversaries, playing some VERY rare tracks, and throwing in a couple of never-played-before tracks--all while still accomplishing the goal of heavily promoting the new album. You can't put personal preferences aside and appreciate that?

I like to arrange by upload date, which has the disadvantage of ignoring relevance, although it does give you the very latest videos in an order that's easier to follow over time.
I don't usually expect any videos until the next morning after the gig when people get around to uploading them, but hopefully we'll get some sooner!
Assuming they keep much of the setlist the same, this will be the third time I've seen the The Mirror/Lie combo, and I couldn't be happier. Love those two together. When you put it like that :lol I'm just very OCD and much prefer a setlist like Score where a song was played from (at the time) every album. I even have a tally of how many songs I've seen live from what albums, and luckily, if this set does remain the same, I will get to check off my last two checkmarks (the very obvious DT12, and FII finally).
Yeah, I guess I'm being a big baby. Thanks for the reality check.
How did Finally Free end, did they play the coda like in LSFNY? Did Petrucci play an outro solo as in the 'Making Of' CD?

Aside from Trial of Tears and Illumination Theory, the only other song from my top 15-20ish DT tracks is BAI - which I saw on the last tour. Surprised they dedicated over 20minutes to ADTOE songs. Nothing from my 2 favourite albums (I&W and ToT) either, and like you, I was hoping for 8VM/ItNoG/ACOS - so there's a good chance I'll still not have seen any of my top 4 DT tracks live after this tour :'(
Anyway, that's just personal preference - you can't please everyone with the setlists and plenty of people seem to be very happy with it. I'm sure the guys put on an amazing show as always and we'll just have to see what sort of song rotation they do.
Well it's 1am here, I'm calling it a night. 18 pages within three or four hours - good work, people.
How long was the show? Just doing a rough addition of the song lengths in my head, this comes to around 2 1/2 hours, not much longer than a usual set with an opening act. Did they stretch the songs out to make it a 3 hour show or something?
Hopefully Surrender to Reason will make it into another setlist. But scarred alone makes this one a winner, probably my personal favorite DT song.
No complaints here even though they didn't play I & W songs. I doubt the whole tour will be bereft of songs from said release. I still think they are playing ACOS right now and no one is telling us. ;D
Fan-fucking-tastic concert. The crowd fantastic. The band were amazing. I had hoped for octavarium or in name of god to be on the setlist, but I take what I can get :)
Maybe they will show up on the next
I have started uploading IT and with any luck should it be uploaded before I have to check out
Interesting set list... Kind of expected more DT12, but they went the album anniversary-heavy set list direction. Can't complain though, there are some great songs there!
Curious to see if the set changes tomorrow night. Also really looking forward to YouTube videos!!!

Excellent! BTW, I'm assuming the Easter Egg part of the track didn't show up anywhere?
Thanks for recording part of the show and uploading :)
By the way, hopefully this is just a mistake, but the concert venues for Lithuania and Helsinki are both advertising that this show will be 1 and a half hours long on their websites (for buying tickets). And those countries are pretty strict about things like this, I mean time limits on concerts. Just wanted to bring it to the attention of anyone in the DT camp, if they're reading this, because I wouldn't want there to be any last-minute misunderstandings between band and promoters.
I'm torn between dismissing the set as a disappointment, and acknowledging that DT have so much music they could never please me, individually. I'm sure my perfect DT show would be a lot different than many fans.

LOL! Personally, I wouldn't mind it if they skipped completely over IaW for this tour - all those songs (including my favorite DT song ever, LtL) have been played plenty. They've got so much material to pick from in their catalog, and so much of it hasn't been played in ages. It would be nice if they completely shook things up in that regard. Time will tell if they do or don't.
Shit. Amazzzzzzzing setlist. If this setlist is part of the NA tour, I might consider flying somewhere just to rock with DT. Not a single weak song imo. Trial of Tears :hefdaddy
Holy fucking shit x_x
:heart
Dream Theater just has so many incredible songs no matter how good a setlist they have they will always be missing things (unless of course they did a 4+ hour show which id have no problem with :p). I am disappointed in the setlist not seeing Octavarium, ITNOG or ACOS which everyone seems to have wanted as well but honestly I think it is better than last year, playing songs that true fans would like instead of mostly just popular ones. I say replace the ADTOE songs with Octavarium and then it's a perfect show.

Agreed. Something has to get left out sometimes. I don't mind hearing something obscure in lieu of an I & W song. I just can't wait to hear/see the boot from this show with SDV. It can't be that the band played this for the first time and they themselves didn't have someone documenting it both on video and audio.
Another thing I'm curious about is how they did Portnoy's vocal parts in The Shattered Fortress.
I would never have designed that set list, but I would have been stoked to see it! Awesome!

Or a JLB backing track. I can't really imagine JP's voice having the gritty delivery for it.
So, finally back at the hotel.
Was nice reading your comments. James voice was very very good tonight.
Spoke to The whole band except JMX after the show.
They are all psyched and happy that after all the rehearsals the tour has begun.
There's a superb vibe within band and crew, go see the show, it's top notch!

And that was it. I am very pleased with what we got.
Good show?
Absolutely. It was my 7th time seeing the band and it was surely the best DT show I ever attended. Sure, I'm a proponent of the new lineup as this incarnation rekindled my love for the band. So, you can take what I say with a grain of salt. Still, I believe the show was actually very good. James was in top form and clearly having a good night. Mike was just brilliant. He fits the band like a glove and I hope he never leaves the band. John Myung was more agitated than usual (by his standards, of course). Petrucci and Rudess were their usual excellent selves.
Thanks for the updates, Jeroen!

100% agree. Its the Awake & SFAM anniversary, so I&W material can go on moratorium for this year.
Tonight's setlist was sublime: full of treats and surprises, nice blend of new material and requesite epics. So happy I am seeing DT 3 times this tour. Is it March yet???
Prediction that tomorrow's Setlist B switches out the SFAM encore for Side A tracks from Awake??

I was surprised to see nothing from I&W but after due consideration I think it's a stonking set list.
The screen is cool. Also nice to see a switch up in the wardrobe department--going sleeveless
This was my 4th time , and all I can say is that it was probably my favorite.
- great setlist ( just dont liked that moment "Lifting Shadows/Scarred/ SdV ")
- motherf*ckin huge production on that multimedia stuff... I mean, best stuff i've seen!!!

Was the "easter egg" played as the outro music?
QuoteI'm extremely sad. I was hoping for the return of any of the following: In the Name of God, Octavarium, A Change of Seasons, The Killing Hand.
I love these songs on their own, but I like variety in a concert setlist. Mostly everyone else seems pretty happy. Am I alone in my sadness?
I'm not extremely sad, but I'm disappointed a bit. I was hoping for the second epic, but a chunk of SFAM as encore is not too bad. I think if they would've replaced Enigma Machine with Stream of Consciousness, and OTBOA + TSF with something from I&W / SDOIT / 8VM (rotating the songs), I would be fine with it.
In fact, they played quite a bold setlist, looking forward for the show!
This is a very special day in Dream Theater history. So great to see them finally perform SDV. Can't wait to see some footage. Great setlist, but im sad there's no Bigger Picture, Behind the Veil or Surrender to Reason. Those songs are a tremendous back to back to back on the new album and they happen to be my three fav tracks from the album.
So they played the whole second half of Awake? And Trial of Tears? And the Shattered Fortress? And Finally Free? And Breaking All Illusions? I don't even care that nothing was played from Images, 6DoiT, or Octavarium. That's just incredible.
I was really disappointed by the last album but fuck I really want to try and see them in VA now.

:iagree:, especially on the Bigger Picture. Maybe, those songs could be alternatives to Enigma Machine or The Looking Glass.
I just woke up to read through this whole thread and HOLY SHIT! :eek I wouldn't have expected the setlist to be THIS amazing, even though a lot of my predictions and wishes became true! Sure the lack of I&W is weird, but I think it has something to do with the touring schedule and its effects on James' voice. Hearing SDV live at my first DT show will make me the happiest man on earth - February 24 can't come soon enough! :caffeine:

Interesting, in the final chorus of OTBOA James did it the way he does on the record, but I remember on the ADTOE tour, he changed that last line to be higher.
Blob, the intro video was amazing! Couldn't be happier with it! Is this a different version of FAS? It's hard to tell, but it sounds like a strings-only edit.
As for the band, they did great for their first show, but there was a bit of rust showing. Of course, video quality can add to that. JP kinda fudged the Shattered Fortress solo, but oh well! JLB also struggled a bit during The Pursuit of Truth, but he actually did Surrender Trust & Passion VERY well! I noticed he opted out of some of the final "you never know" lines, but the particularly high line of that he pretty much nailed. He sounds better than he did on the first ADTOE show in 2011, which is a good sign of things to come!
It sounds like a strings-only version of FAS in the intro to me.
Yep, it's an all new orchestral/strings recording of FAS, not just a remix of the album track.
I have no problem with no I&W tracks, if they are gonna play that much from Scenes and Awake. In a sense, they did the WWRD thing again, giving Awake the same treatment that Rush gave Power Windows on their last tour. :metal

Interesting setlist, for sure. Too bad there are no I&W songs, but I'm hoping that they will rotate some into the future setlists. Put very simply, I "traced" him in 3D to create a rough 3D model that matched up, then stuck the image back onto that model, and animated the model. It's pretty low tech, but it's the only way I could do it justice.
Can a set list be more amazing than this? :omg:

Blob, I'm curious as to how you managed to make that WDADU guy animated and rotating/winking, based only on the album cover. Mind you, I know nothing about animation and the like :lol
Put very simply, I "traced" him in 3D to create a rough 3D model that matched up, then stuck the image back onto that model, and animated the model. It's pretty low tech, but it's the only way I could do it justice.
Ah thanks Blob for the facts!

Just like in reality. ;)
I just watched bits of the IT video. Man, James sure is off during the 'Rebels for their freedom' bit, but I'm sure he'll get better at that as the tour goes on.
On the ADTOE tour it took James three legs of touring to seriously get awesome. Let's see how things develop this time!
I'm not going to watch any videos, but after reading these comments I'm starting to be happy my show is going to be the 32nd of the tour :D

Blob, that intro video was incredible.
Not sure why so many people are complaining about a lack of I&W. For one thing, it was only one show, it's not like there will definitely be no I&W songs performed this tour.
For another thing, even if that were the case, if there was an album that has been played plenty enough over the years, it is I&W. And it's my favorite album. But those songs have been DONE. It's OK if they aren't played this time, they have plenty of other great music.
Yeah Blob, the intro was awesome, gave me chills. Great job.
From the videos i've seen, the stage production is great, i like MM's new kit, and the band seems very excited. James was a bit meh but that's to be expected on the first show.

I don't know, I've read a few comments that says they won't be rotating songs much this time around - if at all. I'd like to see at least one live when I see them, I didn't get to see any from I&W in 2009.
We'll see in the upcoming shows if they pop up.

Yeah I noticed that about the angle too. If they're just their for show, that would be rather lame and I can't imagine that Genie would do that. But if they were, I'd lose a little respect for him, since that's not the sort of thing I'd expect from him or anyone else at his level.

It's too depressing to be an encore song. Every one would leave the venue a little bummed out instead of with big smiles on their faces. That's not a great way to end a show...
the kicks could easily have double pedals set up to reach them like bozzio uses.
I agree with genome; as awesome as it is to see Space Dye Vest finally getting played, it should not be an encore song, much less the only encore song. Not only is it too mellow for that spot, but as much as many of us hardcore fans love it, it is likely a song a lot of casual fans are not as overly familiar with, so there are bound to be huge chunks of fans at shows thinking, "What song is this?"
Anyone was on VIP? How was? What about the VIP gifts?

Gotta agree with those who say that having SDVest as the encore (especially by itself) would be a real downer to end the show with. Considering that they are highlighting the anniversaries of Awake and SFaM, the only real change I would make to the song order would be to have the SFaM set of songs follow the Awake set of songs in set 2, and move IT to the encore. That way the whole show doesn't end on the down note of FF.
I agree with you Scotty. Unless of course JP starts improvising a solo at the end of Finally Free while MM keeps going crazy, which would be a more fitting closure than the actual FF outro, vaguely reminiscent of what they did in 2004 with ITNOG.
But yeah, I think the setlist could improve switching the Awake and SFAM minisets and postponing IT as last song.
I'm not complainting one bit about the set list. But without changing anything up at all, and only adding, the one thing I can think of that would have made this even more epic, if they had a bit more time, is if they added Metropolis pt. 1 to the very end right after Finally Free.
Or just play Home instead of both The Dance of Eternity and Finally Free, and then add another DT12 song into the first set. :tup :tup
Did JLB say something/do some sort of introduction before they played Space-Dye Vest last night?

The stage/lighting design is steller and very professional. Lots of little details that tie the stage together like JP's Enigma cabinets, the new drum kit, etc.

No, but they have a backing track for some of the sound effects and had the backing track going exclusively for the soft section leading back into the part where the video starts.
Watching that and watching how they, especially James, seem a bit subdued during that section makes me pause and recall how technical this song is. I'm sure they are a bit tentative right now in a live setting with it. This is one that I think will probably have to grow on them a bit before they really feel completely comfortable and are able to really let loose and enjoy playing it live.
I also just want to say that, thanks to this show, I'm listening to LSFNY again.

Please no. Besides PMU, Metropolis has been done to death. I like the fact that there's no IaW in the setlist (assuming they don't rotate any in) and I'd love to see a tour without those songs, just for once. They have so much other material that's been overlooked over all these years that deserves to return to the set, or in some cases, to get aired for the first time.

No, I hear you about them not
needing to include any I&W songs. I agree. And I wasn't throwing that out there from the perspective of needing an I&W song, and I also wasn't suggesting that anything be removed from the set to accommodate it. I only made that comment because, for obvious reasons, the music of Scenes is so derivative of Metropolis pt. 1, and the nod at the Roseland Ballroom show where they played it right after Scenes was terrific, IMO. So since they are paying homage to the Scenes album on this tour anyway, I think ending that with Met-1 would be awesome. I get where you are coming from, but I still think it would be cool.

YES! :metal When someone said JR had a "curved keyboard," I thought that might be what they were referring to. The keyboard player from Epica uses one on the Retrospect DVD, so I had seen that instrument (or at least a similar one) there already. I have to say, just from a fan/audience standpoint, it loos really odd and awkward. I think the Zen Riffer is a much cooler looking instrument. But whatever. Still cool to see Jordan being able to come up front and move about a bit.

Just also have to echo a lot of the praise for that intro. video. Blob, the transitions you came up with and a lot of the little plays on the artwork that you did are so cleverly done. Bravo!
And whether it's true or not, I choose to believe that the transition from Black Clouds to ADTOE through the doorway was a nod to my DTF forum splash page art concept from the last version of the forum.

What the hell with James going an octave higher at the end of SDV. Flat most of the time
Eeek, yeah. He didn't even need to sing it that high, which is my problem. He tried to sing it a whole octave (or more) where it it's sung on the album, and got burnt. Ugh.

Yeah. While I certainly understand wanting to spice it up a little bit for a live crowd, I don't think that is the way to do it.
I thought going up at the end worked, mostly, once he got a little comfortable with it. But, it was a little jolting at first.
I liked the octave switch -- makes the ending a bit more bombastic and exciting. Of course, JLB was a bit pitchy at times, but that's the only problem I had with the performance.

By the way, I'm very excited to see how the SDV solo evolves and expands through the legs of the tour! The same has happened to Hollow Years in 2004, the extended solo went from being just a minute long in the first show to what was captured at Budokan. I hope something similar happens this time too! :azn:

Thank you very much guys genome and wasteland! Really appreciate the warm welcome! Well the idea of the "Light Orb" was just there in my head from the beginning. I won't say what the light orbs represent as this is up to each and every viewer. In any case, I wrote a script and created a storyboard (big thanks to my wife too for inspiration!) to present to the DT guys. After a bit of back and forth and discussing "styles" I got busy creating the actual animation.
It was a pleasure working with Jordan and John P. and all the others involved. Illumination Theory took a bit of an effort but it was well worth it. So happy to see it on the big screen. It's just very emotional in combination with the music! Glad you guys enjoy it!

Sheesh. They don't have a copyright claim. However, that's how Youtube works. If a label even *says* they have a claim to something, they'll remove the content regardless. Most artists don't agressively pursue this, from what I can tell, but some do.
I hope this is a RR thing and not a DT thing, though. If it is DT, I don't know what to think. I can't imagine a band like DT stomping down on bootleg live performances people record on their own devices. MP practically authorized bootleg culture, just requesting that fans not share *certain* material that was going to be released officially. I'd hate to think the band have turned away from that.
Do you guys realise the magnitude of DT history that happened last night? This controversial song that polarises opinion getting its first live full-band performance, when there was a time that it categorically would never be performed. For starters, it proves the beef was just between Portnoy and Moore, and as Portnoy had pretty much complete control over what the band played, the others couldn't have a say.

Not really. It may also simply prove that things change over time. Let's assume John felt the same way that we know Mike did about the song, but that he gave in because, in restrospect, it didn't make sense to keep holding it out if the fans want it, or maybe James and Jordan pushed for it because it got a great response when they did it at Jordan's show, or maybe he just feels less strongly about not playing it now. I mean, there are tons of variables and possibilities we just don't know. We DO know that Mike didn't want to play it, but that's about all we know.
Quote from: RoeDent on January 16, 2014, 02:01:38 PMPortnoy had pretty much complete control over what the band played, the others couldn't have a say.
Yeah, that's just completely false. There are things Mike wanted to play where others put their foot down and said no. And there are things Mike didn't really want to play that they played because others wanted to. Mike may have had the strongest opinions, and as the primary person who put the set lists together, he may have had more say by default, but I can assure you that if ANY of the other members had strong feelings about a song, their wishes were followed.

totally forgot their first show was last night so I thankfully got to miss all the fretting and got to dive right into what was going to make this setlist especially special. Damn, they delivered.
So I'm not crazy about several of their choices but they do make sense.
Dance of Eternity is my least favorite instrumental by far but I guess it'll be cool to actually watch them do it, especially since it was an audition song.
Bummed On The Backs of Angels is being played again but it makes sense.
Really bummed The Bigger Picture isn't in the set. Maybe setlist B??!?!?!
Enigma Machine is underrated and will give James a good breather.
Space Dye Vest...nuff said.
But....Shattered Fortress?! I'm gonna give it another try but man, the several times I tried before I was overcome with laughable lyrics, forced callbacks, and melodies done half as cool as before.
Beggars can't be choosers though and I will just say that this experience will be AWESOME! Great setlist overall. Bold to not do I&W.

Mike was often making absolute statements and going back on them. I remember him saying after the Scenes tour they would never do the album in its entirety again which they did. He also said Disappear would only be played once total but I believe they played it a second time. I think he also said that 6DOIT would never be played again unless it was in its entirety.
So maybe he was outvoted or maybe he changed his mind. But he admitted the person that is willing to hold out the longest usually wins and that is almost always him so I seriously doubt any of the others had a problem with SDV. They never said anything against it but Mike was the adamant one about never playing it. Sure the beef may have been with others but I have a feeling that never playing SDV was 100% MP.
Sorry for the 3rd response in a row but did anybody else notice that JP actually has an amp facing him. During the end of the Mirror you can see him trying to get feedback from it. He has always had those metal things to put his feet on with pedals in between but now it is an amp surrounded by that...metal...stuff.
I'm gobsmacked they played SDV and the let the song build quite amazingly to the end. Wow, just wow.

Also, it's a special case of it being the 20th anniversary of the album, and obviously they chose to celebrate it by including a large chunk of the setlist, and to make the anniversary especially special, decided it was the time for the first performance of the song.
For all we know, the band would have decided to do that even with Portnoy in the band, and had they not been putting together a special anniversary tribute, may have very well continued to leave it alone. It's not like they pulled it out as soon as MP left, it only came up with the anniversary setlist. I agree with you bosky.

I'm extremely excited about this set. Like, it is literally one of the best DT sets I've ever seen. But it's all theoretical. The videos are rather disappointing...I should probably wait for Scarred, The Shattered Fortress and some of the DT12 songs to surface, but the songs that are up are disappointing, for the most part.
The biggest issue is James, and I'm sorry to say this, but he was terrible. I'm usually amazed by his performances and can't tell he's 50 by any measure. But this show...SDV's higher octave section (it *could* work, if he wasn't so shaky), The Enemy Inside sounding so effortless in the negative sense, the way he sounds like he's struggling on Finally Free, a bunch of other songs.
The worst of all, to be honest, was Illumination Theory. I LOVE this song, I can't thank James enough for this awesome studio performance, and the song in and of itself is one of their finest. But honestly, in this song, it simply looks like he gave up. Like he said "screw that, I can't sing tonight, I'll just do some yelling and get it over with". He had this burned out look in his eyes, maybe some regret about recording it that way in the first place, dunno. But even then, just sing it improvise it a bit and sing a few notes lower and on key - don't lose your timing completely!
I'm sorry if my post is not so humble and polite, and I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm exaggerating or something. It's just that I adore this band and extremely passionate about them, and to me, this wonderful guy is the heart and soul of DT. And honestly watching and listening to some of these videos simply frustrated me and bummed me out. Maybe it's just a 1st show thing, maybe these songs are too taxing when put together, but honestly maybe doing a 3-hour set is not the best idea when you're 50. I'd rather have him with a great, functional voice for 5-10 more years and 1:30-2 hour sets.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for the amazing job on that video. I really want to see the ones for LSOAD and TSF. The video reminded me a lot of Storm Corrosion - Drag Ropes. Beautifully done, seriously.
Blob, the intro video gave me chills all the way through. I couldn't help but smiling when I was watching it. My favorite transitions where the ones from ToT to DT12, but all of them where great. Excellent work, man.
I loved how they played Space-Dye Vest. Jordan held back a lot and it came out great on his side. JLB did even better than I thought he would (and that's saying a lot), and I loved how he went a whole octave up on the last verses. Also, JP's solo was out of this world. I really hope he extends it as the tour progresses.
Well, an update on my JLB negativity: The Shattered Fortress was definitely a high point.
The fact that it seems that there's no rotation makes me feel rather blah about the tour. I know it's obviously early on, but a static setlist just bores me. I have tickets to 3 shows in March and may decide to dump one if things continue. I think they should have AT THE VERY LEAST alternated the Awake segment and the SFAM segment on different nights. Playing large chunks of these albums TOGETHER, really makes no sense to me at all. Not to mention, kills any chance for back catalog songs to be played.
I don't know, it's probably just me, but it just seems SO OBVIOUS that without MP, the direction is just lacking.
Don't get me wrong, the songs they are playing are cool and all, and the playing from the youtube videos is awesome, but DT is just missing something LIVE and has been since MP left. :(

They've been rotating pretty heavily last tour, and I highly doubt they wouldn't mix things up at least between legs. Also, can't see them NOT playing the other 3 songs from DT12, so that's another rotation right there.

I did the False Awakening intro video, and the taxi videos (song intros + AFTR).
Amazing show. A wonderful video intro. Can't wait to see the guys in south east asia....

I really enjoy the setlist, particularly the anniversary nods since we get to listen to a bunch of Awake songs which aren't played often (LSOAD, and SDV if you want to go all out) and SFAM songs which must be amazing with MM (no videos yet, I think?) but I think some of the other songs could be rotated on some nights, for example BAI. I mean, I love the song and all, but it was performed on most shows on the last tour and we have a pretty much final live version of it on LaLP. I would like seeing that one rotate with Blind Faith, which only has the CiM performance as an official live version of it (correct me if I'm wrong, please), which wasn't really good.I recall JLB saying he wanted Blind Faith to come back, so that's a plus.
If the band really wants to keep playing BAI because of being one of the fan's favorites from ADToE, also considering that it's their only other album with MM, then it could rotate with Trial of Tears. I wouldn't be happy about it at all because ToT is Top 5 for me, but Blind Faith is, too, and having those two rotate kind of makes sense, I think.
I just think it's time for Blind Faith to come back, and they're playing nothing from 6DOIT. It would be cool to get TGP, but it would make more sense to change TSF for that. At the same time, TSF does one hell of a job on the setlist, being both a heavy, rocking song which pumps up the audience and being from the 12SS and from BC&SL. I think Blind Faith is just the right choice.

As soon as I make this post, I'm heading to the Tube to see Blob's handiwork. I watched SDV..... and, some tears were shed. I know a lot of folks don't hold this song in as high esteem as I do, which is fine. For me......this is simply a historic event and beyond epic. In 2004, when I did DT's (I believe) first Meet and Greet, I was able to hang with JP for 5 mins or so. Me and some other cat were chatting with him. The dude asked about the possibility of the band playing SDV live. JP's answer was for the most part ( can't remember the exact statement) that it would be odd to play it without KM, and probably wouldn't happen.
I was actually debating if I was going to miss my first DT tour in 12 years. If this set list turns out to be the standard.....I'll be purchasing tix shortly. As far as folks who feel that it's odd that the set list was devoid of any I&W songs.... I'm 100% fine with it. In the 10 or so times I've seen them....there was PLENTY of I&W's. I&W's and Awake have always been neck and neck for me as far as DT's best. I really look forward to an "Awake" suite. If I have ANY bitch about the set list so far.... I really love Behind the Veil. I hope it gets worked in.
***EDIT I don't know what to say? I mean really.... how awesome of a job has Blob done in the past? How can you TOP...what's been done by Blob in the past? Absolutely stellar Blob! You amazingly manged to surpass your past DT works!
If I had one bitch.... and yes, this is personal.... I really think you should have been tasked to do something extraordinary with Scarred and SDV!! Could you have bitten the bullet and muddled through???
Also....just watched Illumination Theory. Really not a fan of 4 minutes of dead space. Also..... after said dead space....it really becomes apparent that James is really having a tough time achieving studio quality live. Yes...this is the first show... there are probably adjustments to be made. The 4 mins of lull time though? I think JR needs to do something, fluff wise at least. Watching a vid for 4 mins with no live music being performed in an epic piece, is seriously lacking for me.

Quote from: RoeDent on January 16, 2014, 02:01:38 PMFor starters, it proves the beef was just between Portnoy and Moore
We also know that Portnoy flat-out said years ago, on two occasions, that they all thought the song was incredibly overrated:
https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?high=&m=1710693&mpage=1#1710796
https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?high=&m=1709788&mpage=2#1710750
The question then becomes, why would they play it if they all thought it was so overrated? Sure, opinions can change, but I think it's more likely that he was probably spouting off about Moore, and the rest of the band, not wanting to argue with him about it, probably just nodded and didn't say anything, and he took that as them agreeing. I do that sometimes with several people close to me who occasionally give a political view I totally disagree, and it's just easier to nod along rather than disagree and get into an argument about it. In other words, I doubt the band as a whole ever thought the song was overrated, and I doubt the band as a whole thought Kevin Moore was overrated (as he stated in the 2nd link there). Petrucci and JLB have always been high with their praise for Moore.
a) it has been 20 years
b) it's a borderline fan favorite, that the fans have wanted to hear/requested live for ages
c) the band probably still regard it as a good song that would be worth playing live
d) caring what Kevin Moore thinks, especially after all this time, probably can and at least finally now has been downplayed. It's entirely possible Kevin Moore will not even find out about it for quite awhile if ever. And even if/when he does, he very well may not care one bit. And given how much he's distanced himself from Dream Theater, his feeling about playing it live without him, likely shouldn't matter anyway.

While it sounded like it, that's with crummy live audio quality, and I would
highly doubt they left it in. I'd be sure of it.
They definitely re-recorded MP's monologue section during the softer section, as it sounds nothing like the studio version, and the voice doesn't have the bass of MP's voice, so I'm guessing that's JLB. If they redid that, it stands to reason they redid the earlier MP vocals too. My guess would be JLB there, but it's hard to tell with that recording quality.

It sounded like it could be JP there. I mean, JP did some of the aggressive-sounding co-vocals in The Glass Prison, although they're not as raspy as MP's parts in TSF.
It sounded a bit too aggressive for JP's vocal style imo.

They sounded too rough to be JP's vocals to me, although you really can't tell much from that clip. My guess for now is that it's JLB's vocals pitch shifted down slightly. I think JP's voice alone is too smooth to sound like that.
I just figured something out, hopefully it wasn't already brought up... For those that say the band didn't play anything from SDOIT, TOT, Octavarium and SC, they actually covered all of those albums along with BC&SL by playing The Shattered fortress. ;D

:lol If you put it that way. Does anyone think that it's possible there will be a time when they play all of AA? Previously it seemed unlikely that they would, let alone perform TSF (or even Repentance which only got one performance), but now it seems it could happen later down the road.

I would consider that unlikely, since that's an hour or so of set time taken up by something close to MP. But I'm glad they've shown that none of the 12SS will be off limits individually, because I won't die happy until I hear TGP live dangit!

TGP definitely needs to happen live. :metal
That intro video Blob is just phenominal.
IT has quite a few teething problems, not just from James, but the whole band. But for a premiere, it was okay. James just doesn't seem comfortable with it at all. He did pretty well at the end though.

So what exactly was played during intermission?
Looking at the youtube footage, I have a question...
By the looks of it, James is using a wireless mic. How long has James been using them? I thought the band didn't like wireless.

I believe he did for some shows and others he didn't. In LaLP he is wireless, but there were some other shows on that tour I distinctly remember him using a wired mic. Over the past few album cycles though, I think he has been primarily using wireless, all the way back to Score, which was also wireless.
The only band member I have ever heard mention a dislike for wireless was JP and he was speaking in regards to his guitar, as he still uses a traditional cable because he likes the sound of it. JMX's bass is wireless and has been for a while I think....
IIRC, the band are back on wireless these days. Maybe technology is just that much better now?
MM knows how to write drum solos. It's good how he was able to incorporate elements from his solo in the previous tour but mix it in the context of The Enigma Machine.
I also have a better appreciation of TEM. It's not that good as a studio release but it sounds exciting in a live setting. I love when the Myung breaks come in. :)
Anyone else notice how MM used a lot of one-handed rolls in Illumination Theory?

Awesome setlist, would rather see OTBOA and BAI replaced with TBP, BTV, STR but other than that, really cool. May have to check my finances and go to the Manchester show. :metal
BAI was awesome on the three nights I've seen on this tour. There's a part towards the end where JP and JMX double up which is driving the fans nuts every night!
I managed to record almost the entire show except for "On the Backs of Angels" I was not sure if I had enough battery time, so I chose to skip that song
For those who are interested I have uploaded them to my mediafire account and people can get them here
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/35b9b4bzo2rz9/Dream%20Theater%20in%20Coliseu%20do%20Porto%202014
I'm halfway through getting it already! Thanks FrostbiteZ!
I guess I have used up all my vocavulary to thank and praise you in the past two years. Great videos, great sound and great testimony of a great night! I believe the last time a first, headlining tour date was video recorded dates back to 2002 with the famous BB King reharsal show!
That is awesome, thank you so much! Did anyone notice MM playing standing up during The Shattered Fortress at about 6:45? Pretty cool, and it seems to me he really found his place in the band now, he is very comfortable and has a better stage presence i think.
If there is anyone who could convert the audio to FLAC or MP3 i would be grateful!
Downloading now, and about to watch the video of Scarred on YouTube. Thanks so much for recording the show and providing the download! It's okay that you didn't get OTBOA because we already have a live version of that, and we may not have gotten The Looking Glass had you used up your battery. :tup
