I've been a fan boy since Ascendancy came out, and to this day I would put that in my top 15 albums of all time. It just holds a really special place with me.

It's a crime that Blinding Tears Will Break the Skies didn't make it onto Ascendency. If it did, it would have easily been the best song on the album. I bought the special edition of the album just for that.
Zack, Shogun has some "growls" (if you want to call them that) on it as well.
They're good, I don't get the hate either.
Still, the Boat Rudder Strange Mountain misheard lyric video is still awesome
Travis left in like what, 2010 or something right?
Then I haven't even heard the new drummer. :D
wtf Shogun last? You gotta understand that Ascendancy was one of the albums I listened to as I was just getting into metal, and I loved it and played it over and over again. Same with Ember, which I picked up shortly afterwards. When The Crusade came out I was still riding the wave from the first two albums, and although it was different it still had that Trivium energy that I enjoyed so much from the first records. By the time Shogun had come out I had discovered so much new music and so many more bands, and I didn't play it over and over as i had with the other albums. Maybe that's because I was listening to so much other music that I didn't have the time, or maybe it's because the songs just didn't blow me away any more, as those on the earlier albums had done.
Travis was a terribly inconsistent drummer, the replacement is far better.I was mostly speaking from what he recorded, I've barely heard any live Trivium.
He consistently fucked up the Pull Harder... intro, so Heafy would have to scream "THIS IS PULL HARDER" again.
I really only care for Shogun and The Crusade. But those albums are absolutely awesome so it's not that's an insult towards the band or anything.
It's really great to see so many positive views on these guys!! :tup
Ember to Inferno in a fantastic record. And remember Heafy was like 17 when they made that, and he did all vocals plus lead guitar.
I just listened to the new track, and I actually think it's really great! Nothing groundbreaking, as has been mentioned, but that's a great groove, had me headbanging on the second listen. I think their strength lies in making aggressive and heavy tracks rather than the long 'epics' they had on Shogun. In fact, if I recall correctly I read an interview with Heafy where he said they wouldn't have songs that long (Shogun) on the new album. That said, I wouldn't mind something along the lines of The Crusade (song) again.

For serious. I honestly didn't expect this thread to get more than 8 or 9 replies.
And concerning Travis...if I recall correctly, he didn't leave the band. His ass got fired for some reason.

Matt said there's no instrumental this time :/

Hmm. In Waves is a great song title, but it seems weak to be the album title.Maybe the aggression on the album will come at you In Waves
I'm hoping for a combination of Ascendancy and Shogun, really, but I'm not being too hopeful.
MOAR ASCENDANCY ;DI'm hoping for a combination of Ascendancy and Shogun, really, but I'm not being too hopeful.
Interesting you say that, because Shogun was basically a combination of Ascendency and The Crusade. ;)
Loving the new album artwork.Shattering The Skies Above is what I consider to be a prefect Trivium song.
I must say, Ember to Inferno was fantastic album. Ascendency was near-perfect. The Crusade had a lot of great tracks. Shogun was another fantastic album. I'm really looking foward to what's next. The two tracks that have been released so far "Shattering the Skies Above" and "In Waves" were very good, but I'm hoping the album has better songs. (which I'm sure it will)

I think Shogun is their most perfectly-crafted song. I'm happy that Trivium are one of those bands who can pull off an epic 11 minute song and make it work
I swear its not a proper 'concert,' more like them playing live in a warehouseLike what they did on the Ascendancy special edition? That'd be cool.

There's an Ascendancy one?? :omg:
I think I more excited about this than DT.Really, why? Trivium is great and all, but I can't imagine them ever releasing anything up to DT's standards (imo)

Well, that was an odd music video. :|
*cough* Shogun *cough*Shogun is probably one of the best albums I've ever heard in terms of riffs and guitar work, along with Ascendecny. The only downside to Shogun though is the vocal melodies during the verses/choruses just don't sound too memorable imo. An amazing album, but I can't for the life of me sing the songs in my head after listening.

Not even these?
"I will try, to pour all of myself into this life, before I die"
"Time will not heal, all of your pain, I cannot wait for it all to come crashing down"
"I've opened up my eyes, seen the world for what it's worth, tears rain down from the sky"
"I will never be what they want me to, I live by my own path in life, no turning back now, I won't be held down, forced into a shallow grave built upon their empty ways, there's no turning back"
And that's just the main ones.
Well, that was an odd music video. :|
Watched it again, and I think I see the problem with it. It's a cool concept, but the video tries to create an atmosphere that doesn't match the song. The song and the visuals clash in a bad way.
Of course, I still love the song. But I wish they had just shot a "traditional" video with the band performing the song. Instead of this abstract artsy stuff. Although, I must admit it's cool to see the...thing...on the album cover at the end of the video.

Don't you just hate it when a band releases an okay single before the album's release so people get a bad impression of the songs and end up hating them even though they're quite good?
Gosh

That is downright fucking amazing!! best of the three songs released so far IMO. The riffs remind me of Nevermore. Matt's screaming is killer and a great melodic chorus. Bring on August.

Looks like you and I finally disagree on something. This song didn't grab me nearly as much as the other two did. I still like it, it's good, but...I think it will need to grow on me. I still have high expectations for the album.

that is all

Shogun is definitely their best album. You should check it out.

Yep. Ascendancy is also really good.
just popping in here to say I spun Shogun a couple times after hearing about them touring with DT, and so far I'm digging it. Of Prometheus and the Crucifix is probably my favorite track so far, but I really haven't digested a bunch of the songs yet.
EEEEEEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGG WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTESSSSSSSSS.FIFY ;)
Damn, a lot of this album is so forgettable and mediocre. Fuck's sake, Trivium.
Album cover's nice though.
Can't stop listening to the new album. Those are all the songs that really stood out for me too :tup I've found myself listening from built to fall to the end of the record this past week a lot.
"Caustic Are The Ties That Bind" is my favorite track, which has a lot of Ascendancy's vibe.
"Inception of the End", "Built to Fall" and "Forsake Not The Dream" are really great tracks too.
Their best record to date. 10/10 :metal

This entire album is incredibly catchy and recognizable, I have no idea where you're getting "forgettable" from

I fail to see why you're "laughing your ass off" at my opinion. 's pretty rude
Please bear in mind this is after 2 listens. A lot of the album struck me as forgettable, because I COULDN'T REMEMBER IT, it wasn't particularly memorable. For example, Drowning In Slow Motion, Black, etc. And A lot of the riffs on the album STILL strike me as mediocre. They're not particularly good, memorable or anything. I good example of this is the bridge riff to Watch the World Burn. And the melodies, for me, are predictable and not that catchy.
Is there a way for non-fans to find out what songs will be stickies on the Trivium set list to familiarize ourselves with it? It will probably make the show more enjoyable.
My only album of theirs is Ascendancy, but I love it.
You guys plomise I'll like this one?
I have to say that when I saw the video for We Are The Fire at a friend's house - we were both on the floor. :rollinI agree with Gadough, that is by a mile the worst song on the album. Definitely worth checking out the album, even if you don't buy it. The title track is fantastic.
They've definitely improved since then. :tup
because they even started performing the older songs with clean vocals, which was awful just awful.

Wow :rollin
That was....well, let's just say I'm also glad he's screaming again.
New album is good, but not as good as Shogun.
His screams on Shogun were not the best.
Haven't heard In Waves too much but I think Shogun has the best production on a metal album today. Or one of the best at the very least.
To me they sounded the most strained. Still a good album, but meh.His screams on Shogun were not the best.
I didn't have a problem with them. They were fine.
Just listenede to In Waves (song). I'm still undecided about whether to get this. I agree about the guitar tone sounding awsome. But, man, those screams just sound so stupid and drag everything down. Maybe I'll wait until after the DT show and see how I like them in a live setting.
Try " Watch The World Burn "
man i just can't get into these guys. What is like...their best album? I'm willing to try.
Personally, though, I think the best thing they ever did was help Sanctity get a record deal.
In Waves isn't really a good song to judge the band to be honest
Edit: In Waves (the song) is nothing without Capsizing The Sea as the intro ;)so true - is it annoying that i honestly found this intro one of the only cool and interesting things on the album? The rest just seemed to go on a bit and sounded, dare I say it, very 'samey'. There were of course a few stand out tracks but nothing that really compared to the varied Shogun etc. Perhaps it needs a few more listens.
I have something to say....
DUSK DISMANTLED :metal :metal
I r sad. Apparently, Gadough does not think I am worthy enough for him to comment. :(
This an Ascendancy are the only two albums I have. Ascendancy is better by a mile.

Yea, considering everything they've made since that one (except the new one because I haven't heard it) has been pretty bad, I think I'll have to take your word for it.

Okay, still not overly crazy about a lot of the screamy stuff. But I have to say, listening to the actual CD on a decent set of headphones is winning me over. This album is pretty good. (And the screamy vox actually do sound cool here and there, such as on Dusk Dismantled) Still thinking either Watch The World Burn or Black might be the best song on the album, but too early to tell. Either way, I've gone from not really liking these guys at all to where this album may make my top 10 of the year.
If Mastodon's been done before I think I'd prefer to do Trivium. Sorry to be awkward, but would that be ok?
Yeah man, if you can rally some voters. A bunch of survivors have either recently finished or are soon to finish, so we're gonna need some new ones starting up soon.
Gadough, I have to hand it to you. This band easily wins the "Has Grown On Me The Most This Year" award. At least for In Waves--I haven't checked out any of their older stuff. I'm spinning this album a lot.

I definitely should give it more listens, it's a really solid record. After time has passed, though, I'd now say Shogun > In Waves = Ascendancy > everything else.

Incorrect. it's brittle and fizzly as shit. there's no oomph to anything.
Even the non-mastered version sounds horrible.
Compare the production to Reload to hear the difference.
Garage Inc Disc 1 production is light years better.
It sounds ghastly ! :omg:
Compare the day that never comes off the retail version..to..It's electric from garage Inc disc 1 !!
Death magnetic has horrendous production !!!!
So what's the difference between producing, mixing and mastering an album? Because I just use "production" as an umbrella term for anything like that.
That album fails because of We Are The Fire.
Does anyone know when IF and Trivum will come to the states? When I was talking to Heafy after the DT show, he was hinting at them coming in January.

The mighty In Flames and Trivium will be at your local House of Blues in Chicago on February 21st, 2012.
Survivor's going up now, I hope everyone's excited :o
ETI Round 1 will be edited in shortly.

I'm sure they have, I'm also sure many people don't check for new threads that often, so without posts in threads they have already subscribed to, they forget about the survivor.
Anyway, I went and voted, but didn't break the tie, sorry.
while The Crusade is a completely different style altogether (throwback 80s thrash).I really like the Crusade, but I've never really checked anything else out, because of being told that it's such a different style. The Crusade really does sound like Testament.

Guess I'm adding Shogun and Ascendency to my "to buy" list. Wish I would have made the effort BEFORE seeing DT last year.
I meant to say give any Trivium a chance before the show. I just got In Waves, and sadly I really only ordered it because it was 70% off. I don't know what my hangup on these guys were TBH, I guess I just needed to sit down and check out an album.

get Shogun and Ascendancy now!!!
Shogun is indeed a masterpiece. :metal
Question from me: I haven't heard In Waves yet, what can you tell me about it? A friend of mine said that the album was a massive disappointment for him, which kind of made me forget to check it out, but after reading your opinions, maybe I ought to do it...
Picked up Shogun used yesterday. I haven't listened all the way through, but so far, it isn't really grabbing me. I mean, it's okay, but I just don't find it as interesting as In Waves. *braces for impact once Gadough reads this*
They dominate live. I'm very happy for you, and I can't wait to see them again.
Get up close.
Same here (but not their headlining tour; I saw them supporting DT last year). And, yes, they do in fact dominate live.
Seeing them this Saturday! :metal :metal
I wish they'd play Shogun but I'm not getting my hopes up. :'(
My story is kind of similar. But I had purchased their newest album before the show and had gotten somewhat familiar with some of the songs on it. Then when I saw them, it really cemented that they are a pretty good band, even if I'm not generally into metal with screamy vocals for the most part.
interested to hear how David Draiman affected their music, if at all. weird combo IMO.
:( I've tried to get into Shogun.
Apart from Kirisute Gomen and a couple of others - I find it hard to listen to and some of the transitions are really awkward.
In Waves just seems streamlined, concise and effortless in comparison
I have not yet heard Shogun.
The songs okay, but hopefully this is like the Built to Fall or A Grey So Dark and there's some heavier shit on the album. And please, I hope they haven't gone towards the Crusade style and dropped a lot of screaming.
And please, I hope they haven't gone towards the Crusade style and dropped a lot of screaming.
Just listened to "Brave New World" I liked it.Is it just me or does the chorus sound alot like Disturbed?

??? I don't understand. Why wouldn't you want them to improve?

Oh well. At least we have In Waves.
I think I still prefer Shogun by a hair, Heafy's harsh vocals are better on In Waves, but some of the songs feel like they were custom built for the radio, which while not a bad thing kind of takes away from some of the other songs on the album.Oh well. At least we have In Waves.
Their best album by a mile. :tup
I have tried to get into Shogun many times but apart from Kirisute Gomen and Down From The Sky - not a whole lot of it grabs me the way In Waves did.I wouldn't say that's a stretch, and I think it's cool that they did, but this stuff is not sitting well with me :s First song sounded like Disturbed, and this second song didn't sound good at all either.
To be honest - it kinda reminds me of people saying they prefer And Justice For All to Metallica. It's kinda the same reason.
AJFA is long and technical whilst Metallica is short and concise and radio friendly.
I wonder if Trivium were deliberately trying to make their " black " album.
Ascendancy is still no 1 for me.
Shogun is a close second, and In Waves comes just after that.
https://www.bravewords.com/news/211257
Trivium release third song from Vengeance Falls.
Still really unsure about the new stuff.
This one sounds like it was a leftover from Ascendancy.
Actually i've just realised it sounds a bit like Machine Head with Heafy on vox.
Just finished my first listen of the new album. I'm pretty disappointed by it. Draiman or not, it seems like they've run out of ideas. The only really good track is Strife. Also, they did a great job on the Misfits cover.
I'll give it a couple more listens but it looks like this'll be one of my biggest disappointments of the year along with the new Megadeth and A7X albums.
6/10
Sounds like In Waves was a bit of a fluke then.
So if Shogun was their AJFA and In Waves their Black Album - it looks like Vengeance Falls is shaping up to be their Death Magnetic.
Decent but nowhere near their best.

Um, I have never heard of those comparisons, and personally wouldn't support them.
Is nobody else going to comment on the suckage of this album ?
Crusade isn't really that bad. I throw it on from time to time.
I like how the band tries different things on every album and it always felt like there was this goal that they wanted to achieve in the end. To me Shogun felt like their "And Justice For All" and In Waves was kind of like their "black album".
2013: The year of when all of my old-favorite bands (A7X, Trivium, DT) released incredibly sub-par albums (except for Alter Bridge.)
:( :sadpanda:
I just can't get into Shogun. I've tried.
As long as we both agree that In Waves is at least better than Ember To Inferno, Crusade and Vengeance Falls ?
:hifive:
In Waves is their best album to date.
So far, I am enjoying the new one.
The guitar at the start of Wake sounds out of tune to me :/
Pretty much. But it's one of the most commercial sounding songs on the album.
:emo:
Yeah, I'm with YtseCullen and wolfking. I liked In Waves a lot. But Vengeance Falls is better.FTFY.
"Watch The World Burn" or "All Those Yesterdays"
Think some of the complaints really are DAVE DRAIMAN PRODUCED IT IT SOUNDS LIKE DISTURBED...which, if it does, means I need to buy some Disturbed.
Good album. It's no Shogun, but it blows In Waves into the middle of next week.
So appararently they've been playing "Shogun" live. :omg:

With all the negativity in this thread I was expecting Vengence Falls a massive shitbag. Just got it yesterday and I like it after two listens. Maybe I should only need negative reviews before hand so every album ends up surprisingly good.
Is "Vengeance Falls" what Metallica should have done in 1994 instead of taking a dramatic U-turn and doing Load ?The Crusade is more of a "Trivium Metallica album" than Vengeance Falls, IMO.
Good. He deserved it.Why is that exactly? For trying to make Vengeance Falls not a meandering pile of garbage?
Good. He deserved it.Why is that exactly?
Who moderates the moderators ?:lol I enjoyed that reference.

No idea. Just felt like saying something. I have no idea what I am talking about in this particular situation.
Lol that's really rich. Nick is a fantastic drummer, he was in Maruta beforehand, and playing in a grindcore band takes the endurance of the gods. So not only does he have great endurance, but in my opinion his drumming sounded great (on In Waves, where he actually got to play how he wanted to play)Good. He deserved it.
Came here to post this.
He was shit and didn't deserve to be in the band. He sucked live too. They should really bring back Travis, he was the
I actually preferred Nick to Travis :dunno:It was the grindcore experience :metal
I thought Travis was really sterile and Nick had some feel to his playing.
I was a huge fan of the band a few years ago but I haven't actually heard the two latest albums, so I have no idea at all how this guy was. On Shogun it felt like they were taking that step to become the next Metallica/Maiden, but after Shogun (which felt like it was going a bit proggier than previous albums), it felt like they went back to pretty dull and generic Roadrunner metal.Hopefully Kvelertak is one of those exceptions :P
It's hard for me to get excited or interested in anything released on Roadrunner these days, they manage to suck the life and fun out of most bands I used to listen to. There's probably a few exceptions (like with most rules), but I find the majority of metal bands on their roster to be extremely bland and mediocre.
In Waves is an awesome album. It's their "Black" album if anything.

...Still no reasons then I take it.
I suppose i'm a LOL BUTTHURT TRIVIUM FANBOY LOL
"Silence In The Snow", the new JonPaul Douglass-directed video from Florida metallers TRIVIUM, can be seen below. The song is the title track of the band's new album, which will be released on October 2 via Roadrunner Records.
Said TRIVIUM guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy: "For those of you wondering, this song was written for [2008's] 'Shogun', and is basically almost the same as it was, so 'Shogun' fans rejoice; didn't like 'Shogun'? You may not dig this. But know that since I was 12, I wanted to be a great singer I screamed, because I couldn't sing. I am proud and excited to finally be able to do what I love the way I love."
He continued: "Don't love it? Our old stuff still exists. Love it? Awesome. I love both sides of you all regardless.
"Screaming is easy. Singing is hard. I've always been a fan of what's harder. If you love the old stuff — listen to the old stuff, it's still there and we still play it live."
Heafy added: "We always want to evolve and make what we want to make. You can't say many other bands can say that. They do what they think people want or are told to; we do what we want every time. And we love our TRIVIUM supporters worldwide."
TRIVIUM in May 2014 parted ways with drummer Nick Augusto due to personal differences. Stepping in for him on TRIVIUM's most recent dates was the band's drum tech, Mat Madiro.
TRIVIUM's last album, "Vengeance Falls", made Top 10 chart debuts in Japan, Australia, Germany and Austria as well as a Top 15 debut in Canada and a Top 25 debut in the United Kingdom. This marked the acclaimed metallers' second consecutive Top 15 debut in the U.S. and highest-career debuts around the globe — including a No. 2 debut in Japan.
"Vengeance Falls" sold 17,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The record — which was produced by David Draiman (DISTURBED, DEVICE) — arrived in stores on October 15, 2013 via Roadrunner.
I don't know that there is no screaming on the album at all. He is just saying that he wanted to do some other singing. (Although I have to say, I thought his singing was already really cool)
I hope Matt just does harsh vocals to emphasise a section.
I like the harsh vocals on Brave This Storm. It made that section really stand out.
I really enjoyed the first song though, it's much better than this one.
Heafy said on Twitter that the band is "old" trivium and the peophe in the crowd are "old" fans who want Trivium to be the same thing every time whilst the band just go about their business like always.
Looks like the screams are gone. Even though I'm disappointed, this song is decent, even if it does lack a bit of edge Trivium are able to provide. If the songs can stack up, the lack of screams might not be a big concern.
I just don't understand when bands completely turn their backs on what made them so popular and distinguishable in their sound.

I like to compare what Matt is doing vocal wise to Mikael Akerfeldt. Mik for whatever reason didn't really dig doing growls on albums anymore. That, and replicating Camel a lot. Luckily, both Opeth and Trivium seem to still play the older songs.
Also though, and I think Matt fits into this too, Mik was afraid of destroying his voice. I do recall Matt throwing his voice out last tour. So it might be some of their tastes shifting, but also preservation of his voice. I think if Corey didn't start doing the screams (not sure when he started), Matt would have progressed really negatively quickly, ala Phil Anselmo.
While I for sure prefer stuff like off Ascendancy and Shogun vocal wise, I respect his approach and outlook. Bands morph and change, or at least most do. And they change things up to keep it fresh for them. Otherwise they would split- which I get doing that if a signature sound is gone.
Unlike Opeth, Trivium's shift is not as abrupt and noticeable. It's not like they are gutting aggressive instrumentation.
New Trivium song. It's called Until The World Goes Cold.

If you didn't like the first two that they released for the new album, you might not like this one as a caution.
6. Vengance Falls? (Baring in mind I haven't even listened to it but judging from the comments on here I've probably made the right call)
I'm told the new album is non-growlie. I'm actually intrigued to check it out.
Shogun
Ascendancy
In Waves
Everything else
In Waves is my favorite.
Shogun
Ascendancy
In Waves
Everything else
Correct. :tup
Shogun is massively over rated in my opinion.
Two listens over the weekend, and I'm very impressed. I found the 2nd half to be better than the first, and The Darkness of My Mind was particularly wicked.
I've listened to the album twice through and I'm really liking it a lot! :tup
Yes. It's hardly the pop metal album other people are calling it. Great Production. I like it instantly - which is more than can be said for Vengeance Falls !
Favourite chorus ? Rise Above The Tides.

Not up to it yet, but it's not surprising. Their bonus tracks are always incredible.
This for me, is Trivium lite. The heaviness in the riffs are defintiely there yet unfortunately, the screaming is not. BUT..........Matt's cleans have improved a hell of a lot and so far, they actually carry what the band are doing here.

You say that like its a bad thing. I wouldn't have bothered if the screaming was there. And this is a great metal album.
Trivium are so much better than bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for My Valentine and the like.
I can't see them going more and more poppy. They do something a bit different every time and have very heavy influences.
I like the Dimebag style solo in Dead & Gone
A bit of a shame that the booklet doesn't have lyrics either.
A bit of a shame that the booklet doesn't have lyrics either.
That makes me feel a bit better about buying it from iTunes.
I am liking this more than I thought I would when I heard it was mostly clean vocals. As others have said, Matt has gotten a lot better. It makes me want to listen to The Crusade again to see if I may have overlooked that one. It's been a while.
Either way, :tup

Well said, exactly right.I like the Dimebag style solo in Dead & Gone
Lots of good solos on here. Corey really has stepped it up.
A bit of a shame that the booklet doesn't have lyrics either.
The producer worked on the last Slash album. I wonder if Trivium recorded to tape. It might explain the big - less distorted sound.
My main tiny gripe with the album is that the choruses *can* sound a bit similar and the pre-choruses go to the V chord in a few too many songs.
I really need to get the bonus tracks...I wish I would have been more careful pre-ordering.
Just did it.
So Shogun is number 2 even though you haven't heard the full thing?
This is one of the best sounding albums I've ever heard. It's not overly compressed or loud and you can turn it up and it doesn't distort, still sounds nice and clear. The drums sound insane.
Wait Trivium has more songs than just Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr? (for real I only knew a few songs of Ascendancy)
I heard some of their newer songs (from In Waves and Silence in the Snow) yesterday when a friend had them playing, pretty cool stuff, they've become like a Rise Against with heavier instruments in their latest album, and In Waves (title-track) is fucking awesome.
I wonder what happened to the last bloke. His work on the new album was great.

Yeah it's weird. I really liked Nick's playing though.
So in a couple of years Trivium will have 3 albums in a row with 3 different drummers. . .

Thanks bud.
I picked up Silence in the Snow and I fucking love it. It's a great metal record.
OK so I (finally) heard this album. I'd been kind of putting it off, since I figured I wouldn't care for it too much without the harsh vocals.
Much to my surprise, though, I don't really miss them at all. Matt's cleans are great and pretty diverse, and the songwriting is really fantastic. This is probably tied with In Waves right now as my favorite Trivium album.
I really like In Waves too, and Vengeance Falls is okay (though not as good as In Waves), but in my opinion both albums pale against the greatness of Shogun. Easily the bands high-water mark and the title track is a beast of a track that I find unlikely that they will ever top.
I love that one part where it's an alt picked single string riff over half time drums.
And " ANNIHILAAAAATE ! " < - - Is that Down From the Sky ? That part is amazing.
So TRIVIUM are drummer-less *AGAIN*...
Heafy is now saying that Trivium are a 3-piece and drummers will come and go ?
Wouldn't you want a permanent drummer ?
Especially since the drummer is such a big part of their sound. Travis was awesome and his drumming on the older stuff added so much IMO. Who knows, the right person might come along.

I totally agree with this. His drumming on Shogun, in particular, was really good. It had something special about it that they haven't been able to recreate since, IMO.
I like it.
Jesus, I don't know what to think about this one. I thought from the first song they were going back to more of a Shogun style, but this is a pure definition of selling out for these guys.

Hey guys, what album should I check out if I've never really heard Trivium before?

I think most would recommend Shogun. For me, personally, as a casual fan, I really like In Waves and Vengeance Falls.

I'd say In Waves would be a great start, but Shogun would be good as well.

When I listen to them, I sometimes can't help but playing the mental game of, "If I had to chose one song to recommend to a potential fan to give them a flavor for the band, what would it be?" My answer to myself is Caustic Are the Ties That Bind, from In Waves. The reason being, I think it is a great song for showcasing many of the band's different sides all in one song: their softer side with smooth melodic singing; their rocking melodic side; their aggressive but non-screamy metal side; and their more extreme metal side. Even though the song is only 5:34, it has a lot of changes and hits on all four of those different sides of the band, and does so very well, IMO. And it's a really good song in and of itself as well. It isn't my "favorite" song of theirs. But for those reasons, I kind of view it as their "signature" song.
I personally would say the Capsizing the Sea intro and the title track of In Waves is a good start to listen to Trivium. Then again, I only heard their stuff from In Waves onwards, mainly due to being too lazy to listen to the stuff before that. I just like that those two tracks and it's a good start to the album.
Plus, it's their closer to their shows.
Well darn. I listened to a few of the songs from Shogun last night (including DFTS, which apparently I have heard, because my friend showed me that back in '08 I believe) but Matt's voice ruins it for me, I don't like that style of growling/screaming he does and the cleans don't resonate with me. But I gave them a shot. Thanks for the suggestions!

This new album kinda slipped off my radar a little, this has brought it right back :metal looking forward to this.
Interesting. I listened twice and didn't care for it at all either time. But The Sin and the Sentence, on the other hand, grabbed me right away.
The Heart From Your Hate is pretty good too, but very different for them.

I didn't like this one at first to be honest, but then it got stuck in my head. I'm fine with it now but glad every song isn't that style.

Me too. I've really liked Sin and the Sentence and Betrayer. The Heart From Your Hate was a little bit of a let down on first listen, but then grew on me.
I'm really looking forward to this record based off those three songs though, I hear elements of Silence in Snow, In Waves, and Shogun - which is awesome.
Really excited for this album. Love the dynamic structures of TSATS and Betrayer. Feels like the closest to Shogun they've got since that album.

Betrayer I feel is so original for them, but definitely leans towards the Shogun style of things.

I totally agree wolf. My first thought listening to that track was that the arrangement and parts surprised me (in a good way) yet at the same time had a familiar Shogun-ish style.
What a brilliant album. Original, heavy, melodic, very well written and constructed and everything here is done with love and purpose. Matt's vocals are fucking incredible and the versatility he shows here is insane. Some of the screams here are his best. Everything about this album is fantastic, this doesn't disappoint and certainly a top album of the year. I'm so glad the screaming is back also.
I picked this up late Saturday afternoon, but haven't had a chance to get through it yet. I'm going to remedy that today. But I do like what I've heard so far.
I loved The last album but made it five songs into this before the screaming and the blast beats forced me away.
There was some good stuff in 5here but was there a need for blast beats in every song? Or so it seemed.
Dat riff in Sever the Hand! :omg: :metal

Interested to hear your thoughts bosk. For me this is easily in their top 3 albums along with In Waves and Shogun.

Not sure yet. I like a lot of what I hear. But two things: (1) this isn't my usual style, so it takes me awhile to get used to; and (2) I'm undecided on the lyrical content. Matt's lyrics are very angry, even for him. And that's fine. But it is the target of that anger that gives me pause. I can't tell from the lyrics if they are angry anti-God lyrics or angry anti-religion lyrics. If the former, I find that offputting, and I'm just not interested. If the latter, I get it and can respect that.
I think that's where it is going too, but it isn't clear, and I don't know enough about Matt to tell.
This album is kicking my butt in a good way. I'm loving Alex's style and sound.
Anybody know whose guitar is in which channel? I'm thinking Corey is left but not sure.
New band called Blacknova formed from 2 ex-Trivium members:
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/former-trivium-members-launch-blacknova/
New album is still killer and on regular rotation.
Finally got around to picking up TSATS. Holy crap, what a killer album! I didn’t like the last 2 albums but this one is definitely their best since Shogun. I love the first 3 songs, and Sever the Hand and Thrown into the Fire are killer songs as well! This one will be spinning a lot in the coming weeks for sure!

Yeah mate. This is still on regular rotation for me too, really good stuff. Beyond Oblivion is the one I'd single out as my fav. Has a real Ember to Inferno feel IMO.

Same here, I literally listened to this record on my way to work this morning. Beyond Oblivion, Other Worlds, Betrayer, Sever the Hand, and The Revanchist are probably my favorites at this point. That said, I don't think there's a bad song on the record, I skip nothing.
So I'm listening to Silence in the Snow (fitting as we've been snowed in the last two days) right now. I gotta say I prefer it way more than their latest. The Sin and the Sentence is more in the style of Trivium that I like (compared to SitS) but the songs just aren't as good for me. I just haven't really had the urge to listen to TSatS that much recently.
I get the feeling I may be in the minority here as I know TSatS was pretty well received.

Sorry, man. I saw an interview over the weekend where Paulo said likely next year, but they do not have solid writing plans at the moment.
I think the 3 tracks released for the album so far are all kinds of awesome. Yes, it sounds a bit like Sin and the Sentence in terms of style, but I think that's a good thing. For me , S&S was their best album since Shogun. Amongst the Shadows and the Stones is one of the best in your face metal songs I've heard in a long while. I'm very much looking forward to the full release next week!
Worthy follow to their last. Wish it was a bit longer.Yup. 9 tracks (i count IX as the intro to dead men), and 1 is 3min long.... that's short for a metal record. Unless it's a hatebreed album, that is
No it's not. That's an extremely normal album length. 40-45 minutes would probably be the average, so it even exceeds that a little.Worthy follow to their last. Wow. In Waves and Silence in the Snow have no business being ahead of Ascendency. Or even the crusade lol.
I've never liked the Metalcore scene. And I don't like Matt's harsh vocals on it.
Oh and I know people worship him But I always thought Travis was a really robotic drummer.
Alex is their best drummer hands down. Then Nick.
"...Sentence " and " Dead Men " are like two sides of a double album.
And Alex is definitely the top drummer
uh, I guess, but for every album I've recorded I get the drums done first so that I can synch up the right hand of the guitars and the bass guitar with the bass drum. Doing drums last is a weird way to record.

I completely disagree. Think about it like this: you don't write a song with the drums first. You write melody and rhythm first, typically on keys or stringed instruments. Percussion comes afterwards, and can easily be altered to match the song structure. And a drum machine, or any metronome for that matter, can simulate a bass drum for guitar purposes.
Matt posted this live video of Creeping Death with Corey Taylor and Robb Flynn as guests: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9r2Sj1pKVUBetter than Metallica plays it, if you ask me. Corey Taylor nailed it.
Man, looks like they are having a TON of fun! And I love how the censor basically gives up halfway through the first verse, and then tries to catch some of the F-bombs later, but either beeps late or misses some of them altogether. :lol

I like it. Last album never really hooked me. I spun it a few times but never really felt a need to go back to it. I love how this song has a classical music chord progression and lots of classical instrumentation, but then the chugging and screaming. This is one of the few screaming groups that I can listen to, but I admit I prefer it when they sing and simply tolerate the screaming. But I don't listen to this band for vocals, it's really all about the instrumentation with these guys. The arrangement is clever and sophisticated without being too cerebral. That's my general opinion about vocals, too. Trivium is the only screaming band i listen to, and i do enjoy Heafy's scream, but I'm here for the dual guitar heroics

Not bad at all. More aggressive sounding than What The Dead Men Say. And I'm a sucker for concept albums, so I'm really looking forward to this.
Odd, although I'm certainly not complaining, that they're releasing another album without touring the last one.
I'm going to have to go listen to In Waves again. I seem to remember it being behind Ascendency, Shogun, Sin and the Sentence and What The Dead Men Say. It's possible i never gave it a proper go.
I Still think IN WAVES is their masterpiece.
Paolo said on Twitter they weren’t happy with the production.
I like this one a lot better than the first one.Agreed! :tup
New album is insane. I think it's the best of the Alex Bent era. It's like Ascendancy Shogun and Sin and The Sentence all in one.

??? But vengeance Falls was a huge disappointment?
I guess my ranking would be:
Shogun
Ascendancy
The Crusade
Ember to Inferno
Silence in the Snow
In Waves
The Sin and The Sentence
What the Dead Men Say
Vengeance Falls
I'll never hear what other people do in Ascendancy. I love Pull Harder... But the rest of it just sounds like every other metalcore band at the time, with completely lifeless robotic drumming.

I'll do a ranking later but WTDMS might be at the bottom.
Are you shitting me? How is that even possible in a world where Silence in the Snow and Ember to Inferno already exist?
So the only Trivium album I have is Crusade, and it's pretty awesome! So what other albums are a must have in their discography??
If you like The Crusade - keep going. try Shogun next.
I love In Waves so much. I also really like Silence In The Snow as harsh vocals aren't my cup of tea. I just tolerate them in trivium as I don't mind Matt's harsh vocals.
i also like Troy from Mastodon and Corey Taylor.
The Crusade is generally regarded as their worst album. It came out the year after Ascendancy and "We Are The Fire" is Eye of The Tiger with Matt doing his very best Hetfield Impression.
I love Trivium NOW but at the time my friend and I saw the video for it on TV and we were both in stitches.

I realize this isn't a Mastodon thread, but if you haven't checked out their new singles yet, stop whatever you're doing and get on it.
Gave this new one a go. I’d really like it without the vocals.
This album fucking rips!
Not liking Alkaline Trio is a travesty if you're at all into pop punk. Go listen to Good Mourning and Crimson. Dark pop punk at its best.
I'm the same with respect to genres. I like bands, but not necessarily a genre. I tried liking Rush, i really tried.
Right now, i have In the Court of Dragons on repeat. This album is great stuff. Early favorite is Crisis of Revelation. The catchy melody of the chorus grabs me every time
I need to catch up on the Trivium discog. I have no idea why I keep losing copies of In Waves. I need to pick that one up (again!), Silence, Dead Men, and Dragon. I'll probably get the new one and go backwards. No real desire to get any of the pre-Shogun albums. But maybe some day.
I'm kind of surprised they don't have any official live releases. I have seen a few shows on YouTube, and they sound great and put on a great show overall.
And just in general, Matt Heafy is becoming one of my favorite musicians. He has a great business mind and genuinely seems to like interacting with and doing special things for the fans, and I think he is in a great zone as far as figuring out a lot of ways to merge those two qualities.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxOhc-dfEDY
IN WAVESSSS
Plus I like that the three guitarists all do vocals instead of being one of those bands that have 2 singers for some reason.
A Crisis of Revelation sounds exactly like Ascendancy. Interesting that they can just sound like that if they want to.
Imagine if you heard Ascendancy in 2005 then that song and nothing in between. Youd be like :lolpalm: omg 15 years and they sound EXACTLY THE SAME.
Matt's harsh voice now is much more listenable and less screechy.
Serious question: Does anyone know where the Court of the Dragon is? I would really like to know my worth, but it seems like the only way is to be in the Court of the Dragon. Can anyone help me out here?

I haven't studied the lyrics but from what I can hear, Matt seems to be into Jujitsu or some form of martial arts lately. I think the deeper meaning of the song is related to that.
In the Court of the Dragon is based on a short story from the book The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers.
The play portrayed involves mystery for those who follow The King in Yellow and the Dragon of the tale.
EDIT : Paolo writes a lot of their lyrics

Didn't realize that. Because of how active Matt seems to be in writing (and other aspects of the band), I assumed that the vast majority of lyrics would be his. Thanks for the correction on that.

I'm not usually a fan of their songs which are just screaming and with not a lot of melody in the guitars but i f-ing LOVE "Chaos Reigns"...

So, this album is my first real exposure to the band. The only thing I had heard of them was the first 3 seconds of In Waves many years ago before turning it off as I wasn't much into harsh vocals back then :lol
Anyway, it's a great album! This band is much more melodic than I imagined they would be from the very short and skewed experience I had previously with them. Matt Heafy sounds amazing and the album just flies by when. I'd say my favorite songs right now would be The Shadow of the Abattoir and The Phalanx.
Try the song "Black" from In Waves ;)
More accessible than The Silence In The Snow ? Unless that's what you meant.I can honestly say that I've listened to Silence in the Snow but a single time.
Since we are suggesting songs, I will throw Caustic Are the Ties That Bind, from In Waves. I'm not sure I would consider it their "best" song, but it covers a lot of ground and kind of showcases a lot of different elements the band does well all in one song. If someone asked me to pick one that encapsulates who they are, that is the one I would recommend for that reason.I love Caustic! You're absolutely right that it covers the whole gambit of what Trivium can do. Clean and harsh vocals, a clean instrumental section, lots of harmonies and solos. What's not to like about that track?

So I've listen to all suggestions (thank you all by the way) and I quite enjoyed what I heard. I kind of dig the way their music can be pretty heavy, but also catchy if that makes sense. So many of the choruses are just great to sing along to. I'm glad I decided to give them a shot and I'll start diving deeper in their discography for sure.
Anyone else listened to the Ibaraki album that came out earlier this month? It's a Matt Heafy project he made in collaboration with Ihsahn. I've never really been able to get into Trivium but I'm really enjoying this album, it's currently my AOTY.
Give this song a listen if you haven't heard it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDrRKl0JHB8
I gave a few songs a listen. Didn't really take with me. I'm a little surprised you enjoy it but don't enjoy Trivium much.
I’m seeing the Chicago show tomorrow, it’ll be my first time seeing Trivium headline, but 5th overall. My bff and I are mainly going for BTBAM but we’ve always talked about seeing Trivium headline one day. Guess this is it!
I decided to make the 3hr trip down the highway to catch the Deadmen and Dragons tour last week. Was a top notch show. They swap out 3 of the slots in the setlist at each show, so there were a few surprises for me. One downer though was the inclusion of Amongst the Shadows and the Stone in place of Crisis of Revelation. I'm a big fan of Shadows, but Crisis is my favorite track from In the Court of the Dragons. Also, our show missed out on Like Light to Flies or Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation. Instead, our setlist got Pull Harder on the Strings of your Martyr. Good track, definitely a surprise, but not as good as either of the former options.
If this tour is hitting your city or one nearby, I highly recommend checking it out.

Aren't they playing Shogun on this tour? As my favourite Trivium song I'd go for that alone!

BTBAM put on a great set, too. I hadn't really listened to them before, but they left me very intrigued. I've been digging into their discography a little this week.

Sounds like Trivium re-recorded Ember to Inferno for the release video for their new plugins. I sure hope they release it as an actual track, because it's fucking awesome sounding! A vast improvement over the original song which is a good one to begin with (vocals and production aside, of course)
