I think MP's best work was on FII.
His snare definitely sounded the best there.
Heh, difference in opinions. The drum sound alone brings the entire album quality down for me. I can't stand it.
I have to agree. My favorite snare sound has been on Awake or SFAM
Same for me too probably. I think Awake wins. :tup

All of your opinions are wrong. A Change of Seasons has the best snare ever. Thanks to Over The Edge for the facts!

ACOS's snare is dry and tinny, and the drums sound raw in general. I'll throw in my vote for FII for best drum sounds, or SDOIT.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I disagree very much i sometimes listen to the song just to hear that snare.

Yes, that snare is awesome, though not as good as on FII.

best snare sound is probably ToT or 8vm. I hate FII's because it is too "pingy," with a high tone.

My absolute favorite MP drumming has always been in LITS, from 4:13 on.

I absolutely love his drumming throughout that whole song.
This.

Also, from a purely technical point, I would have to give a nod to The Great Debate, although I don't really like the song itself that much.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I'll put up my less obvious votes here:

- Hell's Kitchen is slightly hypnotizing to me,  and that may be an odd choice for some of you

- Speak To Me is my vote for least notes drummed in a song, but effective. Nothing fancy, but I do love that song. Also hypnotic.

- I didn't think much of New Millenium until I saw one of Portnoy's drumming DVDs I have, I think it was Liquid Drum Theater, and watched him play the middle 'solo'. It's funny how you can turn a song you don't like as much into one you listen to more just from a live performance, even on DVD.

No, I like it. HK is more technical than some might think.

Yeah, but nobody asked for your opinion!

Honestly, for MP : the end to Finally Free
                for MM : LNF, BAI

Completely! On the topic of not-so-techy-but-effective-drumming, I have to put a vote for Eve in. Boy is that some good drumming.

Live too! The double stroke (of what  have no idea) before the second sample is of great effect.

The Great Debate is pretty much the ideal mix of technicality and flow on drums. When I think of it or listen to it, I think of MP at his best, showing every side to his style without ever breaking the atmosphere of the song. It's the track that gives me flashbacks of previous eras more than any other. It's a track that makes me remember, and miss MP.

I would also vote for the entire WDADU album. It's their first, and the music has a raw energy that just oozes natural talent. It's crazy to think how good they got by the time the first album came out. They were prog masters in dormancy, and WDADU was their coming out party. It could certainly be argued that IAW was their coming out party, but you never forget your first as they say.
So fking tired of being an oversensitive naive moronic fkin bitch. I CANT STOP IT. I CANT CHANGE. IM STUCK. This world eats me alive. My purpose is simply to be what others shouldn't be. A shriveled fking beacon of sad energy. I have lost. I am lost.

MP's best work is from FII to ToT. I feel like he improved a lot coming from Awake and ACOS but maybe lost something after ToT, although he has some really great moments in These Walls and Constant Motion.

Mangini of course only has 7 songs to choose from, unless you count the small parts in BTS. :P I would say so far BITS and LNF has his best right now.

How about any one of Mangini's live drum solos from the Dramatic Tour of Events vs every MP drum solo put together.

I pick MM.

As much as I love MP's solos, I have to agree. MM's solos are not only really technical but are well constructed and musical.

Completely agree with this. It seems like he didn't improve or learn new things after that, and (to me) his drumming became very "samey", a feeling i continue to have even with his new projects.

Thank you. I think you might be the first person to mention this. MP's drumming on ITPoE is incredible. Especially the beginning of Part 2.

I think "Lines In The Sand" is my favourite, with "Blind Faith" following very cloesly behind. His work on Falling Into Infinity is outstanding, and I wish it would get more praise (but then again, I think that album as a whole should get more praise).

MP : Lines in the Sand is always my favorite song to play on drums, As I Am is also tasteful, and Constant Motion is also not easy to nail.
MM : Always BAI and LNF, don't really like Outcry drumming, that song is not designed for human to play it.

I still appreciate the drumming on TDEN.

It's very "air-drum" worthy.

YES. So many DT songs are. After the great FII-TOT era I mentioned, SC still manages to have memorable drumming, if not being the most original in terms of what MP has already done. ITPOE, Repentance, and TDEN are awesome drum-wise.

I love the drums in Metropolis Pt.1! This video really shows the drum style of Portnoy. The drum beat at 8:20 is one of my favorite of all time.
