I would assume that he's probably playing in Drop A tuning.

I assumed he would just tune the whole 7 string down a full (A) or half step (Bb), but not dropped tuning. Totally guessing, though.

I think the sample sounds great! I also lolled at the lyrics in the Taking Dawn track. The Opeth song doesn't sound that great however.
But its impossible to tell from samples.
