I know Mike mentioned this a while back, here's a juicy RR press release for ya.
https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/news/Roadrunner-Announces-God-of-War-EP-20823.aspx
Apparently Opeth is a part of this too. :metal
-
Looking forward to it :metal
But I want a CD, not a digital EP...
-
new music by DT and Opeth....I like this a lot

Is there any indication that you'll be able to get this WITHOUT preordering the game, legally?

They should let us download the EP separately. If not, then that's friggin stupid! (Because I know I'll buy the whole game if I have to. I don't even own an Xbox.) >:(
-
Am I right in thinking the DT one is going to be an instrumental? I think I remember that being said when it was first announced.
If that is the case, I would be extra interested if it was all instrumental... Although new DT and Opeth is always welcome!

Am I right in thinking the DT one is going to be an instrumental? I think I remember that being said when it was first announced.
“This is the first time in 24 years that we've written and recorded a song for anything other than one of our own albums, so we're up for the challenge and excited to have been asked,” said Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy about recording an exclusive instrumental track for the soundtrack.
Oh and "The God of War III Ultimate Edition will retail for $99.99" :eek I hope the soundtrack will be availible seperately!
-
It better be.

That's good, because the game is exclusive to PS3 :lol
But why are all the other bands apparently doing full band songs, when DT is doing an instrumental? I love instrumentals as much as the next guy, but I wish they were having James do some vocals.
Maybe he couldn't make it to the recording sessions?

Maybe it's just too much of a hassle to have James involved in the songwriting process when he doesn't need to be?

Or maybe they wanted an instrumental on the soundtrack, in which case DT would probably be the best for the job.

Imagine JP or MP writing lyrics for a God of War song? Yeah.

Imagine JP or MP writing lyrics for a God of War song? Yeah.
I could bet "Dark master" and "Forevermore" being part of those lyrics...

ive only seen little clips of the game but itpoe sounds tailor made for it

I still don't understand what is so bad about Constant Motion's lyrics. I think the "Forever more..." part is cool.

They are quite motivating while on a run. I often play the air drums, which can be intense when it comes to MP; people probably think I'm nuts.

I'm glad it's an instrumental because DT hasn't written one in years.
-
I still don't understand what is so bad about Constant Motion's lyrics. I think the "Forever more..." part is cool.
Yeah, I think they're lovely. They're not hugely deep, but deep'd be incredibly out of place in this song. They're well-written, and match the pace perfectly. A little more creative than, say, Panic Attack's account of panic attacks.
-
You really think "Forevermore Into the night blistering!" is lovely?
Really?
-
Yeah! Sure, it's tacky enough but I don't think it's in a particularly bad way. It's a fun, energetic bit of a fun, energetic song.
I'd say it is the worst bit, though, for what it's worth. It only lasts a couple of seconds, though, and it's plenty easy to shout, so it doesn't really bring it down.
-
For what it's worth, I do love that it's a bit silly. I think it's great. Puts a smile right on my face. Bring on the vampires, Dark Masters and FOREVERMORE!
Besides, I think more than any Dream Theater song Constant Motion fills you from top to toe with energy, and the line kinda fits that. Even though it has chuff all to to do with the rest of the lyrics, it does have a fair bit to do with the music.
I'm trying to justify it on a few levels here, and I think a couple of them might have become slightly contradictory. :lol But yeah! Good moment.
-
Well, I'm glad you like it.
-
And I'm glad you approve of his approval.
-
It's better than the "forevermore" in TBOT.
-
I still don't understand what is so bad about Constant Motion's lyrics. I think the "Forever more..." part is cool.
Yeah, I think they're lovely. They're not hugely deep, but deep'd be incredibly out of place in this song. They're well-written, and match the pace perfectly. A little more creative than, say, Panic Attack's account of panic attacks.
I have a close friend who is a DT fan and gets regular panic attacks, and she swears that Panic Attack's lyrics are amazingly accurate.
-
I will say that "FOREVERMORE, INTO THE NIGHT, BLISTERING" was fun as hell to sing along to live with everyone, even though I was having trouble not laughing.
-

I think they're great. Hating the "Forever more" line is completely understandable, as that one is cheesy metal, although it fits regardless but I actually really like the rest of the lyrics though. They're not on a cheesy topic, and they're not so story based.
-

I don't think they will, they're only using it for having a few more people buy the game.

Aye, for sure. Very frantic, almost claustrophobic.

Dream Theater: Accurately describing medical conditions since 2005.
DSM IV Criteria for Panic Attack
A discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, in which four (or more) of the following symptoms developed abruptly and reached a peak within 10 minutes:
1) palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
2) sweating
3) trembling or shaking
4) sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
5) feeling of choking
6) chest pain or discomfort
7) nausea or abdominal distress
8) feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint
9) derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself)
10) fear of losing control or going crazy
11) fear of dying
12) paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations)
13) chills or hot flushes
https://suicideandmentalhealthassociationinternational.org/crihypanagor.html (https://suicideandmentalhealthassociationinternational.org/crihypanagor.html)
Now you could probably guess all of those, but they did get it pretty much perfectly.
Can't wait for this, but I am incredibly disappointed that it is a digital release.

They're so cute when they get the title wrong, but it doesn't matter. The end result will be awesome.

They've been getting the title wrong since they first announced it in November :lol

DT doing an instrumental for this?
Nice!

I really hope DT releases this separately, as I don't really feel like buying the whole album, now that I think about it...

The original press release says it's "digital," so it it's on iTunes I guess that'll be "seperate."

Why does the world expect me to use iTunes and otherwise surrender my soul to Apple? :(
-
Why is everyone worrying about it not getting released seperately?
It's going to end up online and then you could easily record/download from there

Kind of figured if it's on iTunes it would be on amazon too.

Because some people like decent quality recordings.

You're implying too much.
Anything DT, besides a few bootlegs, is owned and bought legally in hard copy as cds and dvds.
I like to support my favorite bands too, but I doubt they are going to get a substantial amount of money from one song in a game. Plus cds isn't really where they make their cash, its mostly from touring.
-
Yes but their ability to tour depends on label support which depends on CD sales.
And suffice to say, any discussion of where to obtain or hear the song illegally is absolutely off-limits here.
-
I didn't say how to download it... :xbones
But yeah I doubt that if the sales of this one time soundtrack plummet, Roadrunner will cut touring for all the bands involved...

Alcoholism maybe.....might be a couple songs about that in their catalogue somewhere.
I think most people here are annoyed at an all digital release because they're colloctors. Yes there is the "its only ripped VBR" or....I have to pay the Apple Nazis for it angles but I think for the most part it's not having the physical media in hand.

Music for hire or not, they're writing new material.
-
They wouldn't have gone to the trouble of getting Dream Theater to contribute a track if they didn't want a Dream Theater song - they won't have hired them just to act as session musicians. Maybe the tone'll be set by the game, but the song's gonna be a slice of pure Dream Theater.

What about Voices? JP said he was reading medical journals to make sure he got everything right in that song! It proved that there was no intentional faith-based conflict and its basically a better version of Panic Attack's lyrics with a different malady.

That means a soft opening, soft middle part, of soft ending. But at least this song will have a couple of emotions in it, instead of a 4 minute balls to the wall instrumental.

Sounds like exactly what I was expecting and hoping for. I can't wait to hear this, being their first instrumental in a while now.

Also, time to follow Mike Portnoy!

Now following MP....fantastic stuff. I love getting these updates that are not personal but feel personal...I love twitter!

Wow, come to think of it, this is DT's first instrumental in 3 years shy of a decade. I really hope this will be available separately from the game.

anyone know what studio they are using for this?

Jordan seems like he'd have one too. Does anyone know if he does?

so excited after hearing that twitter update.
After they messed around with Meshuggah like polyrythms in The Count of Tuscany, I was hoping they would use them more.

While these are the kinds of things that usually get fans fired up when taken out of context, I think we need to consider that the level of input Myung adds to the writing process is his decision before we attribute it to being that of dictator Mike or John.
Just preparing for the inevitable debate.

Harpejji and Bebot in the same song. :tup

I'm kinda stoked about this song, it sounds like DT is writing something absolutely insane.

Fuck. I'm completely psyched up after reading all this.
-
Am I the only one who finds it interesting that, to some degree, Rudess is apparently writing JM's basslines now?
Probably, it's only one line. And they all write lines for each other all the time, depending on who comes up with the ideas for that section of the song.
-
F#!@K this is going to be awesome! :metal Great to see that MP has began to twitter too!

Crikey, that was quick.
Still got Paul Northfield on the job, good man. He's like the sixth member of DT. I wouldn't mind if he produced the next album with MP and JP.

KevMo. He's returned to the band as a guitar rack.

One of JM's groupies. Insists on having at least five, well lubricated men with him at any given time. It's actually on his rider. Rock 'n' roll, eh.

THE HIDEOUS SPARTAN WARNINGS!
FORGED IN THE FURY OF NIGHT!
HE... IS... THE... LAAAAAST!!!!
BORN OF THE BLOOD OF THE WARRIORS!
THE ULTIMATE GOD OF A ROTTING OLYMPUS!
SENT TO UNLEASH THE WAR!!!
Yeah, that wouldn't work at all.

Read it backwards.
I'm sure that this song will be awesome. But it seems pretty evident that no-one in the band really bothered learning about or trying to play the God of War games. No biggie there. Since they were still calling it Gods of War days before going into the studio I figured games wasn't really anyone's thing.

That would be Maddy, JP's guitar tech from the this tour and even the ToT tour (can be seen in the LiB doco)

Looks like they're titling this track "Raw Dog"
That'll probably be the working title - won't be the final name.
Like how we don't talk about Schindler's Lisp, or Squid, or The Pumpkin King pt. 1. (Although we should definitely start.)
-
JP is too busy playing Sega Genesis to care about Gods of War, God of War, or 3 Gods of War.
-
Three God Night
-

That'll probably be the working title - won't be the final name.
Like how we don't talk about Schindler's Lisp, or Squid, or The Pumpkin King pt. 1. (Although we should definitely start.)
But those working titles are given before songs have lyrics to contribute the song title. This is an instrumental, so the name doesn't really have a reason to change, and the only context for the title the game, and they've gone for some fun word play on the title, so I'm guessing it's the final name. Not that I care either way. The song is written, so what's in a name?
-
That's true. Can't find evidence of any of the other instrumentals having working titles - so you're probably right! Just strikes me as resembling their less refined, more nonsensical titles, more than it does any of their actual, finished titles. Though I've just seen the update, and it does look like that's what they've signed it off as. Maybe they're giving it to Roadrunner to title? Or the GoW3 team, if they're using it for the in-game soundtrack. Although, doubt they'd leave their art in someone else's hands like that. It probably is called Raw Dog, hahaha.
-
Well we also have to keep in mind that this is the first time they've ever written a song for something other than their own albums, so I suppose there is no real established rulebook in this scenario.
And also, we know that Raw Dog is just God War backwards, but also remember that this isn't the first time they've named an instrumental by putting a title backwards. Ytse Jam. So I suppose it's not all that silly or unprecedented after all :hat
-
Fair play, right on all counts. I'll shut up now!
I would call it "Jeremy." Maybe "Jeremy the Song." (It's "Gnos eht Ymerej" backwards.)
-
I would call it "Jeremy."
*blushes*

If anyone's interested in how Jordan's Harpejji sounds, here is a clip with him trying it out.

To be fair to them, I play games fairly regularly, and I've never played any of the Gods At War games.
Anyway, I can't wait to hear the instrumental.

i am so down for that

Didn't TDOE have a "meshuggah" riff?

Ytse Jam.
I just realized Ytse Jam is Majesty backwards.... :blush :blush :lol
-
Didn't TDOE have a "meshuggah" riff?
eh, no. I don't believe MP knew meshuggah back in 1998/1999.
But the 'polyrhytmic' part in TCOT definately is meshuggah inspired.

Wait, I take it back. Since meshuggah has existed since 1987 (I thought they were much newer). TDOE was made right after chaosphere came out.
If I had to guess, I think it's the low B on the guitar part, where the rest is alternating between 4, 3 en 2/4.

This is where I remember him saying it

The most incredible thing about that clip is how MP hardly even looks around and all of them know exactly where to come back in.

Ytse Jam.
I just realized Ytse Jam is Majesty backwards.... :blush :blush :lol
I only realised last month. High Five on late catching on o/

Is this instrumental out yet?
No, but I think the game comes out in March, so it shouldn't take too long. Not sure if the other bands have done their tracks yet.
-
Looking forward to hearing this and Opeth is writing one too!
I wonder if the Opeth one is going to be an instrumental too. If this EP is called Blood and Metal, I can def. see some Akerfeldt growls :metal

OFFICIAL: ARTWORK ANNOUNCED.
This was uploaded to iTunes today. God of War soundtrack, has the individual tracks available for pre-order as separate singles. Very cool.
No Majesty logo, though, like the BCSL singles.

(Took me all my willpower not to post this as a separate thread.)

Raw Dog = God War?

I've been reading that title for almost a week now and I never made that connection.

I think Rob was joking...
No? That's the actual artwork. By Hugh Syme if I'm not mistaken.
Although I just checked in iTunes and they've taken it down again.

Really? It looks very...amature.
That can't be the artwork...surely.

I could have done that in paint.

that's obviously not the artwork :lol
-
If I'm not mistaken, it's one of the entries in the MP forum artwork contest.
-
If it really were the artwork, it would definitely be a "Good God, what is this?!" moment.
The background looks kinda cool, though.
-
:lol kinda cute but laugh worthy picture. I like the temple at the top, the cute dogs are really bloodhungry "raw dog" beasts pretending to be innocent.
-
I think Rob was joking...
What an Iain :lol
-
Did you guys really think that was serious? :lol
-
I still think it's serious, you lot won't fool me
*puts tin foil hat back on*

That looks like the cover for Dream Theatre's "Cooked Canine"
-
You mean "Wok the Dog."

What's your problem with the artwork? I hope it's real. The guys should have fun with the cover art for once. :)

I think it's pretty good. I mean sure, you can tell it's been edited - those dogs are like fifty times the regular size, no way is that an unmodified photo - but you can quite clearly tell what the picture's of, in spite of a few fuzzy lines.

Yeah, but this probably won't be released officially...

The "s" in Greatest and "Hit" are a different colour, so it spells the word "shit".

I don't know if it's been said, but the official release date is now March 16th. Presumably, the music will be available the same day.

Blood & Metal eh?
I guess they're making a pun from Bismarck's famous "Blood & Iron speech" in the 1860s, which was given to unite Germany and prepare for war against their frontiers. Maybe Sony is trying to compare that to the unification of the titans in God of War III?
Nah...I think they're just plain old cheesy as balls.

Akerfeldt comments on Opeth's track: https://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=52544&comments=1
"I just finished and approved the mastering of a new song I wrote called ‘The Throat of Winter’. I wrote it for that game, ‘God of war’ that we're supposed to be included in, or however that works. Is it a digital album? I don't know how that shit works, but it's done anyways. Hell, I'm still with my turntables (got 3 of them) and right now I'm playing a Aussie original of ‘High voltage’ by AC/DC.
"Song is very odd, it's good I think, or for my taste it is, but even I can understand it's very....odd! Produced and recorded it from scratch and I'm happy with the sound if I may say so myself. Fred laid down a killer acoustic solo and Per laid down an amazing twiddly tweet moog solo. It's not a very metal song, I'm saving up for that..later.....yet it's got a metal ‘mentality’, or what I remember metal used to do to me. I can feel it, even though it's not a ‘metal’ song per definition. Anyways, if you hear it I hope you like it.
"Me and Fred went to Namm for a few days and it was fun fun FUN! Did some signing session and a Q&A for PRS guitars. My signature guitar looked and felt amazing! Loved the neck of it! It was only a prototype so some adjustments will be made, but overall I'm fucking blown away by it. Fred liked it too very much and it seemed to attrack a lot of interest! The PRS people were real nice to us as always and I got to meet some nice people I hadn't met before. We might have had a few drinks too many but we had to do something to cope with the jetlag which was overwhelming. Looks like we might be going to the Frankfurt Musikmesse as well, right before those anniversary shows we're doing in March/April.

that is SUCH a metal name :metal

We might as well notice that Throat of Winter os Retinw fo toa...hell, I'm getting nowhere with this, but I'm as well sure that this track's gonna kick some serious arse. The Throat of Winter sounds lieka very epic song, wheras Raw Dog sounds like "RIFF, BASTARD" type of song. I'm really excited to check out this GOW III soundtrack (And the game, of course. These series are excellent).

It's so beyond pathetic that with so many great metal bands out there, they have to pick KE and Trivium .

Less than a month, kids. Mark your calendars!
-
I don't have a calendar, but I will definitely be etching this date into my forehead backwards, so that whenever I look in the mirror, I'll be reminded of the upcoming occasion.
-
Frankly, that's even better than a calendar. Not only does it remind you on the days leading up to the event, but the scarring will be a permanent reminder of the good times you had on March 2nd.
(Although you will have to live your life with "MARCH 2ND RAW DOG" on your face, which is a pretty bizarre set of words.)
-
Much more befitting than a mere calendar. What's the worst fate a calendar can bestow upon me? A paper cut? I scoff at the thought of such a weak reminder. But what could be a more metal reminder than carving into one's own forehead? Nothing, I say!

Oh, "The Throats of Winter" because Mikael is known for this guttural voice sound.

I wanted to put /sarcasm green, but I thought it was self implied. Guess I was wrong.

On a somewhat related note I love how Mikael explains things :lol
-
Am I right in thinking the DT one is going to be an instrumental? I think I remember that being said when it was first announced.
If that is the case, I would be extra interested if it was all instrumental... Although new DT and Opeth is always welcome!
i am more anticipating james labrie's "screaming and yelling".
-
DT is instrumental, yes.
-
https://www.guitarmessenger.com/reviews/god-of-war-iii-blood-metal-ep/
‘Raw Dog’ is Dream Theater’s instrumental offering, and it begins with a grinding, fearsomely down-tuned riff that strays from the band’s usual style. This opening leads into a galloping section of mid-tempo thrash, followed by a riff in what sounds at first like the whole-tone scale (1-2-3-#4-#5-b7), but at times includes a natural 4th and a natural 6th. Petrucci makes good use of this unusual harmony with a memorable ornamented motif. After a ripping trade-off with keyboardist Jordan Rudess, he leads the band through a dizzying groove that harkens back to Systematic Chaos’ ‘The Dark Eternal Night.’ Dream Theater also deserves credit for referencing the God of War score when towards the end, in the reprise of the original riff, Rudess breaks out a choral patch that evokes the grand choruses used by Chris Velasco and other composers in the first game.
-
:metal
-
I'm impressed by the use of the game's theme mentioned toward the end of the song, but some of that description scares me a little.
But whatever. I'm sure it will be fun.
-
This is going to be fucking heavy
-
A little disappointed by the appearance of yet another keyboard-guitar trade-off, but the rest of it sounds mind-blowingly awesome.

Yeah, I'd say that sums it up pretty well.

I hope its not to weedleydeedley and good.

You guys have to remember, by doing this they're going to gain exposure from a whole new audience, one that likely adores metal. Plus, the name of the game doesn't exactly lend itself to a sprawling progressive piece. They're going to go overboard on the wankery to show off to potential new fans. If anyone's expecting anything more than a Train of Thought style track, I'd stop now, because you're going to be disappointed.

I wish MP would release a physical disc with Raw Dog, The Throat of Winter, and some extra goodies. I couldn't care less about the other bands.
This.
To be honest, I doubt he will.

Also legally questionable.

i was lucky to watched the trivium's song as they performed it on their show in my country.. it was :tup
i like the idea that DT used the GOW theme

Just checked out some Taking Dawn and Mutiny Within since I didn't know of either until this GoW thing came up. Really liking Mutiny Within's Awake and I think most of you will too, 'cept for Blob of course
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByxNq-w9Hlg
Edit: Just listened to this link in full and it's got a few fuckups in the audio. Sorry :blush I'll post a better one later since I don't think I can use the Roadrunner official one from youtube since it's probably be a copyright violation :'(
-
I'm really excited for this song. Coming off of Stream of Consciousness, this has potential to be seriously awesome.

I don't have time to read this whole thread this very moment. Can someone clue me in on where everyone got the idea that this new song would resemble Stream of Consciousness aside from the generic similarity of them both being instrumental? Is it just folks using SoC as a reference point because its DT's most recent instrumental?

What?

Right now I'm hearing Trivium's STSA. It's awesome! Reminds me a lot of their Ascendancy days... Which kicked a lot of ass. I'm really glad that they made an album as good as Shogun and are following that style...
Coming soon, the new Killswitch Engage song. And then.... RAW DOG!

Well, he has an Eigenharp, an instrument which can imitate all instruments, so why not? He'd only have to leave JLB alive.
-
The Johns tuning down will either result in epic or fail. I can't wait to find out.

I wonder if he's going lower than A (these walls)

I would assume that he's probably playing in Drop A tuning.
-
I assumed he would just tune the whole 7 string down a full (A) or half step (Bb), but not dropped tuning. Totally guessing, though. :P
-
Either one is possible, I'm just guessing it'll be a drop A. (You heard it here first!) ;D
-
IT'S ON!! I'm calling Bb.

Drop F#

my money is on A, thats one of my favorite tunings to play in :D

The lowest note in the universe is coming from a black hole in the Perseus Cluster, about two hundred fifty million light years away.
What’s happening out there is that intergalactic gas has concentrated around a cluster of galaxies, forming a cloud. A massive black hole is sending out jets of particles that crash into the cloud, causing pressure waves to ripple outward.
Some astronomers interpret these as sound waves. Of course, even if you call it sound, it’s too low for anyone to hear. They estimate the note to be a “B flat,” about fifty-seven octaves lower than middle C.
Researchers now think that many black holes may produce such waves, which can affect the way galaxies, and even galaxy clusters, behave.
https://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/the-lowest-note-in-the-universe/
:metardica:
-
Beartrucci will play that note on this track, and whoever listens to that note....will just die.
-
Samples:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039103O0/
So now we know that the track is 7 mins 34 secs. The riff kind of sounds generic to me but i'm not gonna judge anything till I hear the whole song.
-
Yeah can't really tell anything from that sample. Same goes for the Opeth song.
-
Sounds cool from the sample. I just hope JR doesn't break into his standard circus style music over JPs metal riffs.
-
It doesn't sound that great from the sample.
-
I think the sample sounds great! I also lolled at the lyrics in the Taking Dawn track. The Opeth song doesn't sound that great however.
But its impossible to tell from samples.
-
It doesn't automatically blow me away. But then again, what DT song can be boiled down to a few seconds?
-
The DT sample definately soudns like it belongs in a video game
-
Yeah can't really tell anything from that sample. Same goes for the Opeth song.

Regression?

He was doing his standard nice strings work in what I heard.

Hm... It doesn't give away that much... The full version will definitely tell us more about the quality.

-
Sounds great from the sample, but I can't judge based on a short sample like that. I like the up tempo driving rhythm, and the keyboards remind me of LTE.
-
Even if it's not, it sounds like DT wrote and recorded the song in a way that could actually be in the game, so that's cool.
-
Judging from the short clip it sounds great.
-
It doesn't automatically blow me away. But then again, what DT song can be boiled down to a few seconds?
Regression?
I guess.
:P
Since it's supposed to be at major digital retailers, anyone know of any that sell lossless audio?
-
Love MP's double bass! Sounds very :metal
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyoFK4cxmpc
Judging from this, I think the keyboard lick is kinda cheezy. It fits the theme, but listening to it feels kinda awkward.
-
Hmm, I feel kinda meh. I hope that this is a heavy middle part, or at least just a short bit in the song.
Again it is the guitar riff doubled by the bass guitar, and doubled by the keys. Instead of a vocal line there is now a keyboard line that follows the top half of the guitar.
I'd love to hear some more polyfonics from them.
-
MP's double bass sounds fucking awesome.
I'm a pretty easy guy to please, so there is no doubt that I will be loving and rocking out to this song. :metal
-
Either one is possible, I'm just guessing it'll be a drop A. (You heard it here first!) ;D
You are correct.

You are wrong :loser:
It's Drop A on a 7.
For those of you that don't know Tabs and Bakerman do the official tab books for DT.

Judging from Akerfeldt's description and that sample, I think he missed the point of Blood & METAL.
As for Dream Theater, that sounded pretty cool.

Dude, I love your avatar. I can't wait to hear the whole thing next Tuesday, Raw Dog sounds pretty good.

The sample for Raw Dog sounds pretty good, and definitely seems like it works in its context.
Obviously we'll have to wait for the full song to see for sure, but I like what I'm hearing.
-
Loving the riff. The keyboard, not so much.
But hell, it's seven minuites long, I'm sure it won't dissapoint

i always thought that it should be longer than 7 minutes..

just a feeling i guess.. and also after reading the review from the link before, i felt that it's a 9-10 minutes song..

No, if it were 9-10 minutes long, I wouldn't be stoked for it. Stream of Consciousness is easily the worst instrumental they've done, simply because it's too long and drags

thats why i hope for a long song. it doesnt have to be 12-15 minutes

This made me think, for some reason, of how funny it would be for LTE's 'Three Minute Warning' to be released on Rock Band or Guitar Hero, where you would have to improvise it differently every time you played the track.

It sounds like it would fit the game very good from the little snippet they gave :D
-
Opeth´s song sounds so weird. I couldn´t figure out what was going in that sample, in the other songs at least you can say "this is one of the main riffs", "this sounds like a solo part".

I like that too, but I confess I was a bit disapointed, I mean, the stuff I like the most about Opeth is their agressiveness and the growls and the cool guitar riffs. While I think the acoustic guitar parts in Watershed are very cool, they are just there to add some balance. For such an "important-unique" project I thought Opeth was gonna do something that represented them a little better...but oh well, we haven´t even heard the song yet, I will just wait for it and most likely it will be amazing.
-
I'm glad Opeth actually did something different. It'd be retarded if every single song on the soundtrack was balls-to-the-wall metal. Different moods will need to be set throughout the game.
-

Hmm... you're right, I guess it doesn't say they'll actually be incorporated in any way. Still, some variety on the EP is certainly welcome.

He also mentions that they intended to have some cool Kratos samples (Kratos = the main character from God Of War) at the end of the song, but they had to strip them due to copyright issues. I gotta say, that intrigued me A LOT.
-
Can be then expect something similar to BC&SL?
-
thank god they removed the video game sounds
-
Yes, thank god they removed those video game sounds. Despite the fact we haven't heard the song or the samples they intended to use and with DT's long history of putting samples to good use, it clearly must have been terrible.

EXACTLY!
But really, I'm glad the song can exist completely outside the context of the game.
-
Well when you put it that way, I see what you mean. I suppose it will make it feel like more of a DT instrumental rather than something they wrote for another purpose.
I would have liked it to have been in the actual game too though. I don't know how many people outside of us will give much of a thought to a song that exists only on a soundtrack.

That's true. I think an instrumental metal song would work great in a game like God of War, but I'm sure it's orchestrally scored throughout. You're probably right about people not really caring about it, but hey at least we're getting a new song :)
-
I imagine that's what the majority of us assumed when we heard DT was producing a track for GoW III. That's what I assumed, for sure. I too, am a bit disappointed at that.
-
thank god they removed the video game sounds
Fail
It's for a video game companion CD. It's cool that DT found a way to blend what they wrote in with the game in a way that fit the song, and then it was just stripped out. Also, considering that the samples were part of how DT chose to mold the overall flow of the song, it would seem as though something will seem lost from the overall product.

I don't know how or in what way the samples were used, so I can't really say. However, as I said before, I'm glad the song can now exist completely on its own.
Yes, I realize this sounds a little silly having no idea what actually got removed, but for whatever reason I had in my mind that it would have sounded dumb.

I trust the DT guys' judgment. If they removed it, it was for good reason.

So where is everyone buying theirs from?

It will be nothing but wankery! I miss the old DT, when they really knew how to write an instrumental based around a title that's just something spelled backwards!*
Am I doing it right?
*Comment for satirical purposes only. I'm actually really looking forward to Raw Dog.

They were forced to remove it for legal reasons. There was no artistry involved in the decision.

Seriously. The song already has the worst name of any DT song ever. I doubt the label care very much about whether it's good or not.

Then it's my bad. Only read the newest (new) reply and apparantly forgot what the posts above it were about.
-
As far as the excerpt goes, this music sounds VERY appropriate for the game, which I'm sure is what DT was going for. The game isn't very thought provoking, it's just about being a badass and ripping things to shreds. Honestly if this track is mediocre, it's only due to the subject matter of the game itself and the fact that DT honestly doesn't seem to care too much about it. To automatically condemn DT's future work because of it is just asinine, especially after some great sounds coming from BC&SL.

:metal
-
F'n regional nonsense.
Same...
-
I just heard it a few hours ago too on the AOL site. It's shredding and brutal like MP said and there were some cool bass parts. I can def. hear the meshuggah meets LTE part. Oh the sample from the amazon site actually sounded pretty cool within the full song and it's only in the middle of the song. It's not really the main riff.
-
It's playing Wasted Years atm :metal
-
I HEARD RAW DOG!!!!!!!!!
- Not the very beginning. I had the window silent and minimized while I did something else.
- I turned it only like half a minute in and there was some kind of reasonably cool riff playing to introduce it.
- Then there's the part we heard in the Amazon sample. It's not anywhere near the coolest part of the song, so don't let it discourage you.
- It evolves into a really cool groove with really interesting keyboard/bass action going on.
- It busts into the solo section. JP rips out a preposterously good metal solo, followed up by two fairly good Rudess solo, and one more awesome Petrucci solo.
- Then there's a moment kinda reminiscent of The Dark Eternal Night, but way better.
- I don't want to give away how the final part goes. I don't have a good way of explaining it without ruining it.
Overall - Raw Dog is a more than worthy addition to the DT instrumental pantheon. The riffs are brutal. It's fun to listen to. And it's honestly one of the most creative songs DT's written in a long time. I really didn't expect what I got, but in a good way.
And, of course, I just have to mention that Petrucci once again proves he's still got it on guitar. His riffs are so good.
-
The ReaPsTA has spoken. I'm utterly excited about this. :D

AOL radio, play raw dogs now, I beg you. :( I've been listening for two hours now.
-
I HEARD RAW DOG!!!!!!!!!
His riffs are so good.
i pretty much agree with most of this. i def. have to listen to it a lot more tho to really click because there is sooo much goin on in this instrumental.
-
I heard it, and I only have two words:
Pure brilliance
:metal :metal :metal
-
I can't get the "meshuggah meets LTE riff" out of my head!
-
Oh! I know how you feel, the entire feel is just perfect.

Stop teasing us :-[

Dude, I listened to AOL radio all day to hear it, it was worth it. I advise you do so. :p

I live in Canada. I can't listen to that fucking radio

Holy christ this song is insane.
-
Holy shit heavy metal.
-
Holy shit this song is heavy. Much heavier than I was expecting, and I was expecting something pretty heavy.
Honestly, even though they've gone heavy before, this definitely felt like new ground for them. I like it.
-
JP really knew how to use the dowtuned 7 string. Didn't serve as justa gimmick, really helped mold the tone.
-

Thoroughly agreed. I wish they'd start putting out a slightly shorter-than-usual album every 12-18 months and alternate between their classic prog style exhibited on SFAM and the albums before it and make the other albums heavy as shit to show the modern metal world that you can be balls-heavy and have substance.
I like Meshuggah, Scar Symmetry, Lamb of God and numerous other newer metal acts but it'd be awesome to see them all step it up by taking a step back, looking at their product and trying to squeeze in every ounce of "Wow!" possible.
-
Raw Dog is sick, definitely a different style of DT, but cool nonetheless.

I want to see more.
-
Very interesting instrumental. Its 2 AM so I played it kind of quietly... I'll have to listen to it at max volume tomorrow. :metal
Is this just gonna be a digital download or will there be physical copies? (I'm sure this was already answered earlier in the thread)
-
Raw Dog is sick, definitely a different style of DT, but cool nonetheless.
I want to see more.
Meh, I think that between SC, BC&SL and now Raw Dog, I'm about ready for DT to try something different and move back in the Prog direction of their Prog--Metal pendulum.

I totally know what you mean, but dang. The stuff JP's been doing with downtuned guitars lately has been really good. I need my heavy metal sludge injections!!!!

This tune is large

Holy christ this song is insane.
This. It´s the sickest song I´ve heard in a long long time.

Their next album should be two discs, with one disc focusing on a very prog oriented direction, and the other being heavy and balls to the wall. It's just too bad that they've already used the title "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", because it would be perfect for such an album.
-
The drums sound fantastic on this song. Just the right amount of attack and reverb on the snare and toms, and the kick drum is crystal clear.
As for the song itself... It surpassed my expectations. I wasn't expecting a high-quality song, to be honest, but I surprisingly enjoyed it all the way through. I think it's safe to say that DT did a very good job with this song.
-
Gaaaah I need to hear it!
-
Raw Dog.
Raw Dog!
RAW DOG!!!
RAWWW DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
It is an excellent addition to DT's instrumental archives and I welcome it gladly. It also is undoubtedly heavier than anything else DT has ever written. The opening riff is straight up death metal, but it really opens into a great instrumental track that is 100
% appropriate for DT and God of War simultaneously. JP's solos are also :metal. One thing to be noted is that this is not DT trying to be extremely heavy metal, it's DT proving that they are more than capable and succeeding at pulling off extremely heavy metal. I think it's a great track and a very very worthy addition to the DT discography.
-

Good point. Raw Dog sounds almost effortless in its relentless thrashing of your senses.
I seriously want more of this on the next album.
-
Yeah I understood ya. After only one listen it didn't do that much for me. As always it needs repeated listens, especially when it's an instrumental. But it sounds good, lots of heavy riffs and drumming. Some heavy stuff indeed.
-
So insane. Unbelievable track, brilliant solos and some incredibly heavy riffs. A big thumbs up. :tup

I would really like this. ;D

This is a great Prog-core band...are they new?

Plasmastrike and especially kirbywelch, consider this a warning. It is against the rules to hint to where to find pirated material, and it always has been, so I don't know why either of you thought this would have changed.

Can anyone hear Harpejji?
-
Can anyone hear Harpejji?
At the beginning and the end, when Petrucci is playing the purely rhythmic riff, there's a sort of dirty chord that plays behind it. Those could be distorted Harpejji chords. They don't really sound like guitar or organ, so it's a very legitimate possibility.
-
Oh yes I hear that! Reminds me of Meshuggah-Future Breed Machine
-
Pretty awesome tune. Pretty much what I expected. YAY DREAM THEATER
This won't hold me over till their next release though.
-
So cool...And I actually think Mike described it pretty well in his interviews, "Brutal" is the word for it!
-
Pretty cool, pity about the fade-out though.
-
Listening to it now. FUUUU! They weren't kidding about it being heavy.
Edit: Need more time to listen to it properly but damn, that was awesome. Pity about the fade out though.
-
Anyone heard the new Opeth track on AOL radio yet? I can't cos of being in the UK...
-
Man this song seriously kicked my butt so hard it's still red. DT really outdid themselves.
-
Yeah, the song is roughly 6 minutes (idk, estimating off of what I remember) of pure ass kicking. :2metal:
-
Am I the only one who doesn't mind the fade-out? I think it doesn't affect the ending. I don't say that it's the best solution to end the song, but it's really not that bad imo.
-
I just listened to it again and imagined it in a God of War situation and was pleasantly surprised, This song is so stellar that I assure you that whoever is playing the game will say something like "HOLY CRAP THIS SONG IS AWESOME" while playing an awesome and bloody sequence in the game or something like that.
-
Good to see all the positive response. Can't wait to hear this track.
-

1) It's 2010, man.
2) How is posting [where to find] a copy of a legal stream, against the rules? The shit is legally streamed.
That being said, won't happen again.

So I ran into an mp3 of a 10 minute song tagged as Raw Dog that actually sounds kind of like DT and makes a blatant refrence to the God of War score.
Anyone know anything about this?
(Sorry if this is crossing the line on file sharing).

It''s probably a coincidence. Raw Dog is roughly 7 minutes long.
-
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of JR's solo spots. He must have drank some rock juice before he recorded :metal
-
It's like DT saw the other metal bands on the list and were like "we have to do the heaviest song on the album."

I'm inclined to believe that it's a cover band's take on the idea.
It's not nearly as aggressive or polished as the real thing, but it's actually pretty good.
Anyway... RAW DOG = :metal

Well, they certainly won't make The Spirit caries on part 2 for the occasion. ;D

OMG. The beggining is meh, but for the rest, this song kicks serious ass.
-
Well this song is all kinds of awesome!

This was my first thought as well. Rudess does some really cool stuff in this song.

I just imagined Castiel saying that in his traditional non-expressive fashion.

My bad Ariich, I knew you couldn't post the link and I certainly made sure not too, but I wasn't aware that you couldn't even say (things that shouldn't be said to a lack of proofreading lulz ). I mainly did so out of the high demand to hear the song, but it won't happen again!

What I meant by 2010 is that everyone and their brother knows how to reap the benefits of *snip*. Also, what AOL did was illegal? Drop the word "official", was it illegal? If so, then I'm terribly mistaken, my bad.
THAT being said, my copy of the soundtrack should be here Tuesday. ;)

That was very interesting music Marty.

But that doesn't mean you have to mention it. The way I look at it is this: yeah, some of us actually listened to generic metal on AOL radio for hours just to get the chance to hear Raw Dog. I realize some people are gonna find it "other places." If people are stupid enough (or lazy enough) to ask HERE, where it's against the rules, where to find the song, then they really do deserve to get banned. We shouldn't even need to mention that whatever song gets "leaked" at any time is probably tremendously easy to find on internet, because it's against the rules, because fans of a band shouldn't go parading around places to hear that bands music without paying for it, and because it's freakin' obvious.
Not trying to be a Jr. Mod. Just thought I had something kinda illuminating to say about the rules for once. :tup

You didn't refer to the AOL stream (which is indeed legal), you mentioned another site which had the song illegally, and then you proceeded to mention it again. Whether it's easily known or not is irrelevant, it's against the rules of this site. Most people know how to download torrents, but we're not going to start allowing discussion of where to find pirated material using them are we?
Now seriously, cut it out.
-
The reason for the fade out at the end:
"The following week the song was sent to out to Ted Jensen to master, before which we were informed of a slight change that needed to be made. Originally, me and John had filled the entire last couple minutes of the song with samples from the God of War game. It was VERY INTENSE and really added to the orchestration of the song's climax. Unfortunately, one of the soundtrack's 'powers that be' insisted we take them out because of fear of copyright issues with the actor's voices."

Yes. At the end, even if its Dream Theater's song, the last word will always be of those who make the game.

I can maybe see someone who has no exposure to djent liking Petrucci's down tuned riffs, but seriously all of those type of riffs are nothing new. The ones in this song aren't even all that creative.
I think it's about time DT experimented with more djent than just the opening of The Mirror (especially considering JP's nephew is in THE up-and-coming djent band) The riffs are really cool, especially cause they catch you off-guard at first. Finally JP uses drop-A on his 7's!

If I recall correctly, he actually used his baritone guitar for TW, not a regular down-tuned 7-string guitar.

This.
Especially on the drums, the actual quality of the sound is absolutely fantastic. The drums have real punch to them.

The bass drum is kind of loud IMO. I had the same thought when I heard The Dark Eternal Night.

I agree. And at times, the keyboards don't really fit very well with the whole "brutal" style.

I completely disagree. DT should never have "experimented" with djent in the first place. This song is proof of that. I don't really think "The Mirror" is a good example of djent.

The beginning is. Just listen to the guitar. It practically screams the onomatopoeia.
Why shouldn't DT experiment with djent?
-
"Djent" is a stupid fucking phrase. Can we please stop talking about it?
-
Because brutality seems not to have a direction?
They made the song for a videogame soundtrack man. What's so hard to understand about that? There's no need for the kind of direction you're asking for. Of course it's not going to be a traditional kind of DT song.
DT were asked to put a song together for the GoW soundtrack and wrote a song that would probably be fantastic during one of the games' fight sequences. They really got the job done. Too bad it probably won't be in the game, as it suits the idea of a song for a video game perfectly. I'm willing to bet it's the best song on the EP.
-
I personally think this is by far the best instrumental they have done.
-
"Djent" is a stupid fucking phrase. Can we please stop talking about it?
So was prog. But it's still around.
-

I wouldn't say that. But I do think it's better than Ytsejam and Dance of Eternity when it comes to just trying to write something crazy and fun to rock out to.

Wait a minute. This is Dream Theater? Are you sure?
If I was listening to the radio and heard the first 45 seconds of this song play, I would have promptly turned it off.
I was so pumped to finally get another instrumental from them, but... I can't say I want to listen to that again.
-
i like it, it fits the video game theme very well and i think that meshuggah+LTE was a perfect description of it. :tup

RAWR DOG!
-
I contend that Raw Dog kicks your ass in at least 23 different ways. I will now do you the service of listing those 23 kinds of ass kicking.
1. Your forehead's ass. You'll get a dent in it from headbanging into the table your computer sits on.
2. Your kneecap's ass. Having them kicked in is less a shock to your system than hearing Raw Dog.
3. Your elbow's ass. You'll shrug off funny bones without a problem once Raw Dog is through with you.
4. Your testicle's ass (Men Only) Raw Dog will stomp them into mush. You'll notice I didn't list each nut separately to pad out my list. Give me adulation.
5. Your foot's ass. You'll never want to walk again when you can sit down and keep hitting the play button on Raw Dog.
6. Your nose's ass. As the room fills up with the smell of blood and metal, your nose will be unable to process other smells.
7. Your cheek's ass. As you look around for rotting corpses to chew on because you feel so poised for blood shed, you'll chew on and eat your own cheeks in the absence of rotting corpses.
8. Your colon's ass. Raw Dog will literally pulsate through your body and collapse your colon. Yep.
9. Your liver's ass. In order to enjoy Raw Dog even more, you will drink the fermented blood of your enemies, thus overworking your poor under developed liver. But fear not, your friends will think you're cooler because you'll be able to drink more.
10. Your middle finger's ass. With the pure aggresion injected into you by Raw Dog, you'll understand how many people you can flip off without any consequences, thus tiring out its muscles.
11. Your arteries' collective asses. They aren't meant to process the pure concentrated undiluted metal sludge you're pouring into them.
12. Your back's ass. All the loot this song will inspire you to plunder is unhealthy for your bad nerd back.
13a. Your penis's ass. (Male Version) As you plunder loot, women will give themselves over to you in droves. Be prepared.
13b. Your Vag's ass. (Female Version) Men will want you to use them sexually in droves. Be prepared.
14. Your stomachs ass. Raw Dog makes you thirst for Raw Food. It will take some time to adjust.
15. Your throat's ass. Like I said, you'll need some time to adjust to your new Raw Meat diet. The acid in vomit hurts your throat.
16. Your teeth's collective ass. And the enamel on your teeth.
17. The webbing between your thumb and index finger's ass. You'll have to adjust to holding a battle axe all day as you conquer your local neighborhood.
18. Your ears' asses. The screams of your enemies as you murder them will be a heretofore unheard sensation.
19a. Your face's ass (Men only). Your hair folicles will be working over time to grow out a sufficiently manly beard. This is male only because women with beards aren't cool.
19b. Your armpit's asses. (Women Only) I guess feminists are right. Not shaving your armpits is linked with assertiveness.
20. Your breast's asses (Women Only). You will never have to wear a bra again, because your breasts will naturally perk up with confidence at all times after hearing Raw Dog. But that will tire them out, hence the ass kicking part.
21. Your forearm's asses. Gauntlets are heavy.
22. Your ass's ass. Because this song is kicking your ass. Self-explanatory really.
23. Your eye's asses. They will tear up profusely with joy after reading this list.

...It's not THAT good.
-
Yes, it is.
-
Honestly, I think it's my least favorite instrumental, but maybe it just needs more time to sink in.
-
True, that's how new music usually works.
-

Ya know, I like you UMH. But this post is nearly sufficient grounds to strip you of your username *tisk tisk*
-
Honestly, I think this song just lacks the epic feel that the other instrumentals have. I will say that the second half is a shit-ton better than the first half though.
-
Because brutality seems not to have a direction?
They made the song for a videogame soundtrack, man.
There's nothing hard to understand that it is not a good song, independently if it was written for a video game or not. Want a good videogame song? Check "Melodies of Life" from Final Fantasy IX. As for the standards of what DT has done since ToT, it is a typical song from them.
Haven't you been here where we discuss how as of late certain instrumental parts have nothing to do with the song and almost ruin it because a)they literally are just other songs within the song and b)those instrumentals are not that good?
This is a typical case. Brutal riff after brutal riff after brutal riff and cue fade out is not capturing the essence of a fighting scene. Maybe if I'm not paying attention to the song while I'm playing the game this song can last the seven minutes while in my presence.
It is so random that... meh.
-
I disagree em. I see where you're coming from though. You're recognizing a typical criticism of post ToT DT, and applying it do a song that doesn't deserve it.
I've been here for those discussions and, while I think they have some merit, I also think that it's just kinda become the "cool" thing to do when talking about DT. ToT had a lot of wank, but the criticism that all DT instrumentals or all Jordan instrumentals have become pointless and choppy is becoming a cliche that's not true more than a fraction of the time-- or more than it ever was.
I really like Raw Dog. I don't think it sounds any more like "A bunch of parts thrown together" than Erotomania or Stream of Consciousness, and it's better than both those songs. I've only heard Raw Dog once on the AOL radio, but from what I could tell it was pretty straightforward, like a heavier Ytsejam type format without too many changes but a lot of deviation on a similar theme and solo spots. I think they got the job done. But I guess we just have to agree to disagree.
-
Just to take into consideration regarding my post, I love ToT. Somehow I know that was the turning point for what would happen next (nugget!).
"Erotomania" does have a consistent and strong melody reprising through the song though, same with "Stream of Consciousness". So at the end of the day we will not agree. :)
-
I didn't like it at first
I love it
but it sounds to me like it could be music to Extreme Pinball
-

Whoa. What? I love Raw Dog, but love old DT much more. I can assure you that I, and 99% of the people that like old DT more, aren't doing it to be "cool."
-
I just heard Raw Dog, and I can a bunch of similar sounding parts/riffs from BC&SL. I thought that was pretty cool since they said they incorporated some previously unused riffs from the album's writing process.

Just out of curiosity, have you played any God of War?
It doesn't exactly lend itself to a Melodies of Life style song.
-
All I know is that this is the first Dream Theater song ever where I heard noise instead of music. I know that sounds harsh, but it literally makes me want to just turn it off and never listen to it again. Particularly the beginning and the ending.
I agree with emindead. It just sounds like a bunch of random stuff thrown together in order to sound brutal. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come from Dream Theater..
-

Have you played Final Fantasy IX? If so, you will notice how that song relates very well to story of the game. And if you take that song out of context, it will still be a beautiful song. Can't say the same about "RAW DOG".

Why would DT want to write a song that's "beautiful" for a game like God of War? I'm not sure if that's what you were trying to convey but that's what I got. Clarify your point for me if I misread.

As Raw Dog relates very well to God of War. And out of context, it's extremely enjoyable to me.
What's funny is, I can't say the same about Melodies of Life.
Opinions, opinions.

The harpejji shit in the beginning messes with me so much.

And once again, Dream Theater's music divides their fanbase.
Regardless of us liking it or not, it sounds like they had a lot of fun!

While I do not agree with em's opinion of Raw Dog, I believe he is saying that the FF song sounds good in AND out of context for its own game. He doesn't think that Raw Dog has the same merit.
-
It's a bit different. Nobuo Eumatsu's music is being played in the final fantasy games. So of course the music is going to have feeling(beautiful melodies or whatever) to help tell the story. The roadrunner blood and metal pack is just an album with the god of war 3 logo on it to help promote the game i guess. Personally I liked the track a lot, its a pretty rocking metal instrumental. Comparing it to melodies of life is a bit out there i think.
-
Raw Dog kicks ass with or without the game. It's just a fucking insane metal song that proves to be very exciting and creative throughout.

The song gets way better in the second half. Part way through the solos, I began to really get into it.
The first half didnt do much for me. However, it certainly fits in with the God of War vibe.
-
I'm still not over how awesome the intro and how out of the box it is for DT. Looks like the guys can still have some surprises left in 'em.

this.. the intro is pure awesome

On a side note I thought I'd best correct myself on a statement I made earlier in this thread. Tabs has just told us.....
Btw, the person who told me JP had used Drop A was wrong, it's a 7-string in A standard (down a whole step)

Awesome song, great job DT! And yes, it's in A standard, as can be determined from the pedal tone bits on the open E string which is tuned to D at 3:25, and the hammer ons on the A string tuned to G during JP's solo.
-

I was wondering this, cause JP's doing pull offs to an open D3, which would probably only be if it's down a whole step. Sorry for spreading the misinformation, that's where I heard it from.
-
Song is awesome, and for the haters, if they didn't keep changing what they were doing they wouldn't be PROGRESSIVE!
-
I'm with Zydar and the others who need to take a few listens before they start to really like it, but as a first impression, I'm quite impressed. I just wish it'd be in-game, as I'm definitely picked GoW III up when it's released.

Holy shit. Seriously guys.
Some of you love debating but you have two major problems:
A) Your reading abilities are questionable at best
B) You don't give the person you're debating any charity (even if you know exactly what he means, you still give him shit for bad wording, play dumb like you don't understand or just don't try and understand what he's saying in the first place)
Everyone slips and gets sloppy sometimes. Hell, I think I've done it twice this month. But how anyone interpreted what emindead said as, essentially, "Final Fantasy music would sound good in God of War" is beyond me.
-
Listened to it a few times and I can't really recall much from it...it just seems like a big mishmash.
I like that keyboard part in the middle before the solo, and the solo as well.
-
lol Messhugah intro? Will write more later.
-
I saw someone describe Raw Dog thusly: "It's like Systematic Chaos had drunken sex with The Dance Of Eternity." I lol-ed.
-
Overall, it's quite a catchy song, fits the theme, but nothing near their good works. Well, at least it sounds like GOD OF WAR.

You intercepted it even after the person that it was meant for had already posted.
I'm fairly sure I could have worded that better.
-
Kinda liked it! It's very "Brootal", I guess you could say. The Solo Section sounds bad, IMO, and the unison after sounds like a retarded Iron Maiden. I've gotten over comparing pre ToT DT with post. They are on a different track now, whether I like it or not.
-

This song is amazing :O I like the heaviness of it, it has a really awesome intro/outro, it got even better when I found out it was the Harpejji :O Hope we get to see it live :D, I must say...Among their instrumentals, it's ALOT better than Erotomania -.-
-
First off, I love the song. First listen, it sucked, but it QUICKLY grew on me. Yeah, some parts are boring, but overall, a brutal song.
Second, If I heard this clip without seeing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AeLnu7Jsdc I'd swear Stewie and Brian are talking about dream theater songs!

Gee, I wonder where you possibly could have found that? Mysteries mysteries . . . :justjen

I know I'm a bit late with this, but as a song I really don't like it. Sure it has cool sections, but even on repeated listens it doesn't seem cohesive enough for me. I'm sure it will make great background music for mass decapitation, but... Hmm. I dunno, it just seems like they messed around in the studio playing random stuff then stuck together any bits that sounded cool, then soloed over them.

I'd be shocked if it didn't.

I hope it does. It's got some great headbanging riffage, once you find the beat! It'll really get the crowd going.

Apparently the Dutch can already buy it. Any online Dutch music stores knocking about? iTunes won't let me buy unless I'm from Holland, which is frankly fucking ridiculous. Because, as we all know, buying products from different countries is illegal. Imports? Don't exist. Made up. Dear christ that's a frustrating policy.
Getting a little impatient, seeing as it's got another week yet till it's out in the UK. I might buy it from a USA retailer tomorrow. They'll let me buy from them!
-
trivium played their live..
Raw Dog will be excellent live
-
I'm picturing Raw Dog as a replacement for the heavy part at the end of TDEN. Sounds fantastic in my imagination.
-
The Amazon version cuts off very abruptly in the last few seconds.
:'(

I'm waiting for Shockhound to let me download my tracks . . . .

I'm waiting on the same thing. It'd be pretty rad to listen to some Raw Dog on the way to class in the morning.

The bass is mixed so low in Raw Dog. It's really noticeable how you can barely hear it during the unison section. There's no low end at all!
-
Wow, what's with all the complaining in this thread? This is a great instrumental. It may not be brilliant or groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but it's definitely a solid DT piece.

Mine too. Disappointing, since it's relatively easy to obtain a non-cutting off "illegal" version. Oh well. I paid a dollar for another inferior electronic EP from Amazon.
Throat of Winter isn't metal at all!
Honestly, Throat of Winter sounds like Mikael didn't feel like bothering the rest of the band, so he just recorded some stuff on his own!
Raw Dog is pretty good. I'd love to see the band pull it out as a jam at the end of TDEN.

Yeah, heads up to everyone. I brought the Raw Dog mp3 from Amazon and it cuts off. Seriously??
-
Is there any where you can find a legal non-cutting-off version of it?
-
I just listened to it....I didn't like it :(
I thought I would...I normally like when DT does ultra heavy (eg parts in ANTR) but it sounded really forced and uninteresting here. I will probably need the mp3 to judge better :azn:
-
This sounds like a big fucking mess.

That´s strange since the RD reminds me of ANTR, it´s the closes comparison I can find in their catalog.

Dowloaded the album from shockhound. It cuts at the end too.

Also want.

Listening now. Strange.

Listening now. Strange.
EDIT: Mine cut off too. WTF

XD the version I downloaded isn't even the right song. It has MP-esque drumming though now I'll never know who it's by.
-
My iTunes purchased copy of Raw Dog also cuts off at the end :( In all honesty, after a few listens I thought it was intentional (ala "Pull Me Under").
I also purchased Throat of Winter; definitely a different type of tune from the Opeth boys.
Have any of you purchased any of the other tracks? The only other one that I might be interested in is the Trivium track, but besides ol' D.T. and Opeth, I just didn't feel like bothering with the other songs...lol.
-
I managed to grab the Shockhound preorder a little after midnight. Then halfway through downloading the first to track, my computer shuts off. I don't even know where to report or redownload them.
:sadpanda:

My zune companions, is it available off of zune?

Weymolith said that Mike sent him a version of the song that cuts off at the end too.
The Trivium song has a cool chorus.
-
The cut off is annoying, but all we're really missing is a fade-out anyway -- so not a whole lot of difference. Song as a whole: still trying to let it sink in. It's cool, but there is SO MUCH going on that I feel unable to formulate an articulate description just yet.

Yeah, my college has most torrents and stuff blocked, which sucks, because I actually use torrents in a legal way when I'm home.

Actually, Raw Dog is just God War backwards. But I guess the full title inversion -- III Raw Fo Dog -- didn't make much sense.
-
Mine doesn't cut off at the end. It just has a weird flute solo.

:lolpalm:

Strange. I just downloaded Octavarium and there are a bunch of God Of War voiceovers where the flute solo used to be. Someone is screwing with their entire digital catalog.
-
Just went through my first listen of Raw Dog, it was pretty cool. Definitely sounds like it could be part of the actual soundtrack for the game, but its just not...interesting enough beyond the first few minutes. At least SoC had a cool main theme. Listening to Opeth now, and I'm not sure if Mikael knew what God of War was supposed to be about...

God Of Nonviolent Protest III. Opeth song is good but will never top U2's instrumental about Ghandi from the first game.

Well of is... ignorable right?

The bass is mixed so low in Raw Dog. It's really noticeable how you can barely hear it during the unison section. There's no low end at all!
This is my beef with the recording. Reminded me when I heard St. Anger for the first time on the radio and thought, "Maybe something was wrong with their copy." Not to say Raw Dog sounds that bad, but compared with Black Clouds, it's really lacking.

WAIT - there's bass on Black Clouds???!!!

Shockhound won't let me register for a Piggy Bank account, I've tried three times now. It says that I must fill in all the required fields, but I've done that.
I'm moving on to Amazon instead.
Edit: "The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently available only to US customers located in the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia."
Gaah!
Edit 2: And iTunes Store won't let me add my credit card either. *sigh*
-
The only song that has lyrics with anything to do with God of War is Shattering the Skies Above. The Throat of Winter and The End can be loosely interpreted as having to do with the game, but not really.
Worst of all, My Obsession is a love song (sort of), and This is Madness is about friggin 300.
:\
-
I finally figured out what the beginning of Raw Dog reminds me of:
The beginning of Symphony X's Pharaoh.

I've pre-ordered it on iTunes UK. Then I did something else. Like an evil geography-defying wizard.
Only listened to it once, just now. V. good, although it didn't come with the usual excitement I get when I listen to a Dream Theater album. Let's see how this goes. VERY brutal, I really dig it. It sounds like King Crimson taking a shit on a prison-guard's desk.
I like how when the intro-riff comes back in, it sounds more like a breakdown.
-
I am enjoying Raw Dog for what it is, but I imagine it will grow on me over time...anybody know the percentage of growls vs clean in the Opeth song before I spend my hard earned $1 on it?

100% clean vocals.
-
sweet! I don't mind a little growl with opeth, but this makes me  nonetheless....
now where did I put that $1?
-
It sounds like King Crimson taking a shit on a prison-guard's desk.
Yeah, that's right.
-
I'm unable to download from Shockhound because I live outside the US.
iTunes UK Store - Pre-order only
Amazon.co.uk says the EP goes on sale March 7th...
Out of desperation I tried Amazon.com and the US iTunes store but I had no luck. :sadpanda:
I guess I'll have to wait which sucks becuase I got really pumped about buying this today... =/

Don't bother; all known digital versions of the track cut off at the end.
-
Sounds quite nice. Not entirely my taste, but it's Dream Theater, so it must be good.

Uh, no. Having a certain name/brand/label isn't an indicator of quality at all.

I was gonna ask about this. What the hell?
-
Nobody knows. Sucks though, don't it?
-
Am I allowed to share the PDF that came with the amazon version? I know it wasn't included with the Shockhound download.
-
I got both mine on amazon, but didn't get the PDF.
-

It was only included if you got the full album.

I like Raw Dog. I don't really dig how heavy it is, but I still enjoy it. It actually seems to be getting better the more I listen to it. The Throat of Winter is pretty rad too, I think I like it best out of the two.
-

Yeah that's pretty ridiculous. I haven't bought my copy yet, and I don't think I will now that I know that. Don't see why I should pay for something that cuts off like that.
-
It is only the last second or two so it's not a huge deal. Just annoying.
So I'm going to go ahead and guess it isn't off limits. Here's the digital art book:

I've hust heard Raw Dog and Opeth's TToW.
Raw Dog didn't surpass my expectations, but wasn't lower than them either. It's just what I expected them to do: a Kick-Ass Heavy Instrumental. I liked it a lot, it was pretty cool and it definitely has its moments... And as for the arguing I think this is the kind of DT songs that people tend to be polarized about, like (As someone said in a past thread) The Great Debate or Space-Dye Vest. People either hate it or like it, judging from what I've seen in previous responses. I liked it.
The Throat of Winter is a really good song but in a kind of wrong disc. As it is a GoW track, one would expect some awesome ROROROR vocals with blast beats A La The Lotus Eater, but it came out to be a whole different thing. It was a pretty awesome Prog track, though. Reminds me of Damnation but with more acoustic guitars. :tup

Agree. To me Raw Dog was the bast track in the EP and Throat of Winter (although disappointing for me because i really wanted to see the heavy side of Opeth) was the second best. I was never acquainted with the other bands in it but overall I liked their songs too.
-
:-\ I listened to the song once. I hated it. I've listened to is a dozen times now, and it has not grown on me. It sounds like noise. Just a mush of heavy crap trying to sound cool. I do not like it with a lamb, I do not like it, Sam I Am.
-

NOISE? Listen to Anal Cunt. That's noise.
-
I'll be honest, I've heard it 3 times now, and I don't love it.
-
I've listened to it a couple times, and aside from Petrucci going into kill mode this song isn't doing it for me. Oh well, no band bats a thousand.
-
I gotta agree. There are some great moments on this CD and petrucci is insane on it. However it lacks a real sense of continuity, it just feels like random parts thrown together.
See, if they had taken these parts and made a non instrumental song out of it and re-arranged them properly, it would be awesome.
-
but it's Dream Theater, so it must be good.
Uh, no. Having a certain name/brand/label isn't an indicator of quality at all.
It's not like Dream Theater are a company, or a syndicate. It's the pen name of five artists. If you like the music that they make then it's damn well likely that you're going to enjoy a song they release. Not rocket science.

While I agree with this statement, it seemed you ignored the first statement. He didn't say "it's DT so I'll probably like it", he said that because it's DT, then it must be good. I am a devoted DT fan, but that doesn't mean they are excused from making mistakes or songs that I don't like.
-
Hm. You're right on paper, but something about me still kinda disapproves. Maybe I just like the enthusiasm. Seems a bit dicky to burst his bubble. Clearly he's not been dissatisfied yet. "It's Dream Theater, of COURSE it'll be fantastic" is a really pleasant, healthy outlook. Lovely, should be more fans like that.
I guess it just strikes me as bastardly to take issue with such an upbeat, completely inoffensive statement. Talking down to him because he's really satisfied. Even if triad is technically right.
-
Honestly, one of my favorite things about Dream Theater is how diverse they are.

It's the fanboy in you.

Then you must like bands such as Devin Townsend and Pain of Salvation, right?

Not so much Devin, but yeah I love PoS.

After a few listens, I'm not sure I like it.... My question is: was John Myung even in the studio for this? I can't hear him anywhere. I think I'm just hearing Jordan...
-
I'm enjoying the wah on the bass!

You can hear JM just as much as you can LaBrie.

I can see where you're coming from, but as far as I can hear, the bass is present, but you have to make quite an effort to make it out, which is a shame. And the distorted bass part with the wah in it is obviously JR (since MP posted about it on Twitter).
But I would be lying if I said that I didn't wonder myself if JM actually was in the studio as well.
-
Hmm, second listen, and so far doesn't do much for me either. Very thrown together.

Upon closer listen, I stand corrected. All of this is true. On every single DT record, I can hear JM just fine (and I don't understand people that say they can't), but he's barely audible here. Even worse, he's barely present. This is especially apparent during the unison/harmony section - it's painful and lacking. For any song to be convincingly heavy, it's all about the bass.
I got bored and remastered it in Logic to get more bass. It sounded a bit better, but there's only so much you can do. This is like DT's ...And Justice for All. I'm sure it'll be awesome in concert, though.

So according to MP, Raw Dog is supposed to cut off at the end.

OK, but what does Pull Me Under have to do with Raw Dog?

They both end the same way, obviously.

*sigh* Because Images & Words is a concept album about dogs. Do we really need to go over this again?

Yeah, it's just so clever when you abruptly end a song.
-
If what i imagine those samples to have been, the ending would make a lot of sense, it's just abrupt like something else is gonna happen but then a fade out.
