Vacant - #15 - it's an absolutely gorgeous song. A bit unusual for DT, but brimming with emotion, and just executed so deftly. Everything in this song is perfect. I love DT ballads, and I think after this one they've kinda lost their heart-wrenching, really tugging on your soul strings ballad spark—only to be recaptured on ADTOE. I'm very surprised this isn't somewhere in #70-80 range.

Ruslan, you ranking Vacant so high is as wild to me as Wither was to you :lol it just feels too much like an interlude I guess.

Interlude my ass. :lol Never thought of it as an interlude at all. Good to see different opinions though! (even though I think yours is a bit daft)

Afterlife - #92 - had it there on the strength of Score version. Solid song but not one of my favourites.

Forsaken - #34 - yeah this one is way too low. Such a good song, short, catchy, to the point—I never got the hate for it. Always an enjoyable listen.

Better catch up before I get left behind...

100. Never Enough - ...did not make my top 100. Has a rather cool and unique main riff (played on one string on the guitars... not so easy for us bassists!) and a couple of cool keyboard sounds but, the fact that this one feels more like a Muse rip-off rather than a true DT song is a bit too off-putting for me to rank any higher.
99. Wither - this one ranked slightly higher for me at 89. Perfectly listenable and the highlight for me is the quiet chorus before the guitar solo but, overall nothing special.
98. The Gift of Music - ...did not make my top 100. I like the fact that it's a very up-tempo introduction to the album proper and that it's in a major key but the vocal melodies rather let it down for me, I find them a bit generic here. Nice keyboard solo towards the end though.
97. Vacant - 79 for me. Surprised this one didn't rank higher. For a short song, it has a very big impact - the lyrics are so powerful and very nicely sung. Love the instrumentation too, I believe this is one of only two songs where JR and JM are the only instrumentalists (unless we're counting the violin - not sure if that's sampled or a guest violinist?)
96. Afterlife - 91 for me. A solid up-tempo rocker with nice melodies and riffs throughout, and of course an awesome guitar and keyboard unison.
95. Forsaken - ...did not make my list. Surprised this one even cracked the top 100, there's just nothing about it that stands out for me.

OK, so this thing has really started, and the hot takes are there right from the get go! I think I need to buckle up and prepare myself for a lot of my favourite songs to be ranked real low (or not at all!).

My ranking so far

13. Wither
20. Never Enough
140. The Gift of Music

Let's get into it.

Wither, I knew, never had a chance of landing in the top 50, but it shocks me it's this low. I know a lot of people give it a lukewarm response, and are not fans of the theme of the song. What saves it for me is the guitar solo. I really love it and it really elevates the whole thing for me. I think the other big factor is that a big fan of that era of the band, and the run from Octavarium to Black Clouds.

Never Enough was also pretty high for me. I really love Octavarium and all of the songs from the album landed in my top 40. I definitely rank the album as a whole pretty consistent and I didn't see any of the songs as particularly weak.

The Gift of Music was left off my list and I find it wild that it's collectively ranked above the other two. I think shocked pikach face is going to standard for me with this countdown!

Bring on the next three.

Is Wither your favourite DT ballad? #13 seems crazy high for me but I've got a few similar picks on my list. :)

It's actually not my highest ranking ballad, there are two above it.

Luke putting Wither so high on his list are the kind of hot takes I'm looking forward to most from this countdown.

It's what we're all here for. I'm just shocked by how wrong you all are!

Conversely, for the songs that made your list, I also suspect expect A) you to be the one to have the highest rank for several most of the songs from 50-100, and B) you will have a the most NR's.   :lol
I think Stadler would like a word.

Right?! Wait, am I Stadler now? This is an unexpected turn.

Embrace it, Luke, it's like a warm bath.  :)

A warm sponge bath, I assume?

Animal

3 out of 3 today!

Vacant (35)  I might have rated it 10 spots higher and it would still feel right. A beautiful song. By a twist of fate, it somehow became a song I will always associate with my grandfather passing. And considering how personal the lyrics are for James, it is no wonder his performance is so great.

Afterlife (44)   This, like a lot of WDADU stuff, has this classic heavy-metal vibe that does not feel like "proper" DT. But it is so damn catchy and just rocks.

Forsaken (89)   This song has alway been a kind of guilty pleasure for me. Yes, the lyrics are what they are and it is not a song you would play to show what DT is about. But I always quite enjoyed it (unlike lot of SC stuff).

97. Vacant

96. Afterlife

95. Forsaken

Vacant is nice little a transitional song (along the lines of Wait for Sleep and The Silent Man).  It ranked at #79 for me.

Afterlinfe is a solid song with a catchy chorus.  It ranked at #59.

My opinion about Forsaken started high and then it has slipped quite a bit.  I had it at #84.

I had Vacant as Not Rated.
The original NOMAC track.

I had Afterlife at #74.
Never really appreciated it until the Score performance. Best performance ever of the song.

I had Forsaken at #90.
Yeah, it's way back on the list, but it's a song I like a lot, and I think James slays on it.

WardySI

Again only 1 of 3 today had Forsaken at #70

Vacant is lovely but NR and here is where I admit to being a bit of a WDADU snob in that while I know the album okay it just never overly resonated with me as a DT album.  Which is utterly ridiculous and short sighted on my part but think Animal summed it up nicely above and that's kinda how I've looked at it too.

So here I am playing Afterlife remembering it to be cool but not the calibre of couple the other album tracks yet now completely mesmerised at how great it is.  In a Fates Warning kinda vibe too which is a plus.

Don't get me wrong there's some older and demo era  stuff on my list but yeah, one of the reasons I love to get involved in these type threads is appreciating songs I've overlooked and realising what a moron I've been  :lol

The Realm

3 out of 3 for me today but all in that range of 70 to 100 which is pretty interchangeable.

Vacant - my rank 78. Some really nice music in this track. I especially like the strings (cello?). Not a huge fan of the vocals but the music really leads well into the following track. And as others have said it does feel more like an interlude and not a fully developed song but it is still effective.

Afterlife - my rank 83. Some nice parts, especially the instrumental section. I do really like the music but fine the vocal melody fairly weak and uninspiring. Again, as other have said the version on Score is probably the best.

Forsaken - my rank 86. Probably liked this more on release than I do now. One of those shorter, more commercial DT songs, has a really good riff but is pretty formulaic overall.

axeman90210

Vacant- Not rated. A nice somber little number but never stood out in any way. Glad to have been at one of the few live performances of it though.

Afterlife- #60 on my list. I don't particularly care for most of WDaDU, so this is on my radar mostly because of the Score rendition, but it's just a killer performance :metal

Forsaken- Not rated. Nothing terribly wrong with it, but it's also super forgettable to me.

Puppies_On_Acid

Vacant - So this ended up at #143 and thinking back now, I must have misclicked in the ranking engine somewhere. It should be higher, maybe still not in the top 100, but it's a good little ballad-like song. Definitely a unique sound in the DT catalog.

Afterlife - This came in at #30, mostly on the strength of the When Dream and Day Reunite and Score renditions. I still like original album version as well, just not as much. That opening guitar riff with those drum stabs is great, then to finally resolve into the opening verse is sublime! Then there are multiple great guitar lead lines throughout. I like the very bass forward approach too. The guitar/keyboard unison run is also amazing.

Forsaken - This slipped into my list at #91. Definitely much better than some give it credit for, but not a classic. I really like that opening piano melody and the following guitar riff is great too. The vocal melodies are pretty good too.

143 - Vacant
108 - Wither
107 - Never Enough
91   - Forsaken
58   - The Gift of Music
30   - Afterlife

Vacant (51): fabulous song. Beautifully composed, wonderfully performed and excellent lyrics about an awful and sensitive subject. For me, Dream Theater ballads are usually too syrupy for their own good (This Is The Life is a possibly the number one example of this but you could pick four others easily) but this one is spot on. I might be misremembering but didn't somebody say they'd ranked this down with the NOMAC tracks? I mean, what? There are takes and there takes but that? Just no :)

Afterlife (75): my enjoyment of this song improved immeasurably due to hearing it a number of times during the Octavarium tour. And its performance on Score is, of course, stellar. Love the riffage, main melody and solo

Forsaken (not ranked/bottom 20): one of Dream Theater's worst songs. Cringeworthy lyrics, cliched riffing. It's an Evanescence B-side. And yet people are are giving it a pass over Never Enough in the derivative stakes? Huh?

Wim Kruithof

97. Vacant #not ranked, although the story of LaBrie's daughter is emotional and the simplicity of the song really is wonderful.
96. Afterlife #77
95. Forsaken #87 it's been my ringtone for several years now and it's still not bothering me.

weirdo

Out of the last 3, only Forsaken made my list at #76.
Vacant is a beautiful piece, fits the mood and flow of the album perfectly. But I agree that it feels a bit like an interlude. A short breather between 2 big songs. I had it at #103 so pretty close to the consensus.
I never got into WDADU. I dont enjoy Dominici's singing much. In my mind I&W has always felt like the first album. Not to shit on WDADU, im just honestly not too familiar with the material on it. I think 1 song from the album made my list.
Forsaken is a good straightforward rocker. Just loses in comparison to the more exciting and structurally interesting tracks (on SC alone)

I think this is one of the weaker tracks of DoT, if not the weakest. It's good and I don't skip it when listening to the album but never something I reach for.

93. Our New World
Highest Finish: 4 (ReaperKK)
Number of Lists appeared on: 38 (Awaken, axeman90210, bosk1, Dittomist, DragonAttack, Dream Team, DTwwbwMP, Fonzie, hefdaddy42, Indiscipline, jammindude, jingle.boy, JPZealot, KevShmev, King Puppies and the Acid Guppies, Lethean, lightningbolt, lucasembarbosa, mariner, Metro, nobloodyname, NoFred, OpenYourEyes311, Peter Mc, Podaar, porcacultor, ReaperKK, ReaPsTA, Revenge319, Stadler, SwedishGoose, Toro, twosuitsluke, Vmadera00, WardySI, weirdo, wolfking, Zydar)

I love this song. Our new world has all the elements of a great DT track, great riff, catchy writing, amazing solo. The song isn't bloated like a lot of DT tracks are.

Really strong Rush influence here. The song is good but missed the cut for me.

SwedishGoose

S2N is on D/T which has not really connected with me. I guess that is partly to do with following the masterpiece that was the Astonishing with something that to me felt like DT by the numbers. This did not rak for me.
Our New World is a great song on my favorite album but the individual songs do not stack up as highly as the whole to me. Still at 37 it's quite the gem for me.
The Looking Glass came in at 65 in my ranking. It's a nice middle of the pack song.

#614
Two out of three today. I think S2N just sneaked in with my initial ranking but as I revised the list it dropped to 125.

My ranking so far:

13. Wither
20. Never Enough
45. The Looking Glass
49. Forsaken
86. Our New World

Not ranked:

109. Vacant
113. Afterlife
125. S2N
140. The Gift of Music

So yea, S2N. It's pretty decent but to be honest a lot of songs from the last two albums do not feature on my list as I'm just not as familiar with them as all the other albums. Love the bass intro, and the bass lines throughout, the instrument is really prominent. Surely Bosk having this at 11 is a hotter take than Wither at 13? Right?!

Our New World is not one of the Astonishing tracks that first springs to mind as top 100 contenders (actually only one song was guaranteed a spot before I started actually ranking). On my revisions though I couldn't leave it off, it came in at #86. Reap, #4! Holy shit.

As with Systematic Chaos, I have soft spot for D12. The Looking Glass isn't the best song on the album but it came in at 45 for me. I love the chorus, even if it is a little cheesy and I think it's just a great all around song.

ReaperKK, you might wanna correct those numbers in the countdown as it's actually 94 to 92 in order to avoid confusion moving forward. Otherwise, you're doing a fantastic job so far. :tup

Interestingly enough, I didn't rank any of these. All good songs, but they didn't make it.

MirrorMask

Out of these, I have S2N at the 100th place.

Our New World 4th for you Reaper? wow, that's wild! I agree it's concise and to the point, I just happen to not particularly enjoyed, but any love for The Astonishing is welcomed by me.

MustActFastToCoverUp

97 Vacant: #85 on my list. In its way it's a perfect song, I wouldn't change a single note. But it's short and, to me, "only" an introduction to SoC. If those two were one song, it would probably rank in my Top20 or so.
96 Afterlife: #83, at the lower end of my WDADU-rankings.
95 Forsaken: #97. I almost hit the consensus ranking here. One of the DT songs I find myself humming to when they're on, but I would not sit down and deliberately just listen to it.
94 S2N: #74. I'm not a fan of the chorus. Otherwise a pretty awesome track.
93 Our New World: not ranked
92 The Looking Glass: not ranked. I never really got into that whole DT12 album.

I'm sure it doesn't matter Reaper but ìt seems the list of names of lists appearing on for Our New World and TLG is short 3 and 4 to the actual number of lists  Only noticed as I knew I has TLG but wasn't listed.  That's irrelevant just thought I'd bring it to your attention incase it did have an effect.  Not sure about other updates so far though, just noticed here.

S2N - Did not make my Top 100. It's just never been a standout track or something for me.

Our New World (69) - One of three songs from TA on my list (The Gift Of Music was the first). A nice chorus and a cool rock vibe. This was a late addition to my list.

The Looking Glass (52) - My highest ranked song from DT12, so it's my favourite track off it. It has a nice Rush feel, and that main riff is great.

S2N- I had this up at #68. DoT might be my favorite Mangini era album, and I think this one is a little underappreciated compared to what's normally highlighted from it. Love the bass intro, James gives a solid performance, the instrumental section is pretty fun, and the outro riff is rocking. This is actually one MM era song I wouldn't mind seeing them bust out with MP, if only because I'm sure he'd have fun covering the Owen Wilson soundbite :lol

Our New World- My highest song from The Astonishing, I had this up at #48. It's short and straightforward by DT standards, but I think both the main riff and the chorus hook are killer. The alternate version with Lzzy hale is a fun glimpse into what could have been if they went full Ayreon with the album.

The Looking Glass- I was right in the ballpark, putting this at #89. An obvious Rush homage, but nothing wrong with that because Rush is great and the song was well put together.

97. Vacant I had this at number 52 having done the once-through with the ranking engine. I probably would have bumped it higher if I would have taken more time with my list. Lovely song with genuine emotional weight.

96. Afterlife DNR

95. Forsaken 47 for me. I've liked this song from the get go. Great opening riff, cool-creepy lyrics, moody guitar solo, and excellent video.

94. S2N 12 (high-five Bosky). I'm baffled by the apathy this song gets on the forum. To me, this is a monster that never fails to get my blood boiling. I love the energy from the entire band, especially JLB and JM (his most audible tone in decades). Tasteful patch choices by JR and a killer solo by JP.

93. Our New World 50. Catchy, uplifting, well crafted.

92. The Looking Glass 99 on my list. Good song.

I had S2N at # 76.
Songs like S2N and Pale Blue Dot gave you a glimpse of where they were going with View.

I had Our New World as Not Rated.
After a musical journey that The Astonishing takes you on, it ends with such a dud. On overly simple and boring track. Such a let down way to close the album.

I had The Looking Glass as Not Rated.
It's a nice enough song. I don't not like it.

I mean, Tim saying it was basically a NOMAC track is the biggest diss yet.

Yeah, but that wasn't the only thing I was hinting at. :)

S2N - not ranked - I have plenty of DoT songs on my list, but this one was never one of my favourites. #11 is crazy to me, but such are tastes.

Our New World - not ranked - gonna basically echo TAC on this one. A little boring and not something I would like to revisit. I know this one and The Gift of Music are considered to be the accessible hits from TA, but I just don't get either of them.

The Looking Glass - #84 - not quite a highlight from DT12, but an alright song. Anything below #80 on my list is something I don't particularly like, but still pleasant enough to listen to. Good song to see live too.

Don't know S2N. I do like both Our New World and The Looking Glass. 9 songs in and we've exhausted the MM era songs that I'm familiar with.
