First show wasn't even over yet, and people were already complaining about the set list.  DTF never fails to deliver!! :lol

While a few tweaks could have made it better, it is still pretty awesome overall.  I&W alone makes it worthy, A Change of Seasons is awesome, and it is beyond wonderful to see Hell's Kitchen back in the live set.  And you gotta love them finally playing The Bigger Picture.

If you had said, "they will play three songs from The Astonishing," I would have figured The Gift... and Our New World would be two of them.  A Life Left Behind is a little surprising.  While not one of my favorites, it's still a very good tune and a good inclusion.

Dream Team

AIA is rather unwelcome, especially since they've been way more family-friendly since MP's departure. Overplayed for sure. Besides that and TDEN, looks like an awesome show. Can't wait for the US dates.

Madman Shepherd

I am soooooooo over TSCO and TDEN is a little played out but other than that, the setlist is AWESOME!

I hope they keep things the same when they head to the states.  Even though I pretty much hate The Astonishing, there are 3 songs on that album that I love and those just happen to be the 3 they played.  Well done, Dream Theater!

NOMAC2107

So, Learning to Live sounds like it's either in D, or D#. It's not in standard

TAC

they mangini'd the part after the bass-solo, there's a video on instagram of it: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6Diy5jVwE/

Very cool.

So that is what Mangini is saying about changing some of the drumming in the I&W songs.  :metal

Where's the drum solo? ;)

Schurftkut

tomorrow there will be plenty of videos on youtube. So far it's just the bigger picture and a part of Learning to live, which i believe is downtuned?

Judging by the little clips I've seen on Instagram, they played WFS in the original key. The little I heard from Metropolis and UAGM did sound different/lower though.

I'm really glad they detuned some songs, actually. It shows they care for James's voice and aren't askim him to deliver the same register as he did 25 years ago. He's one of the best vocalists in the genere, but definitely not infalible. Also, unless you have perfect pitch or a tuner with you, you won't really notice the key change in the songs.

What I do wonder is whether Jordan transposed his keyboard or if he's actually playing the songs in the lower key. He's very capable of learning them in the new key, and I think he did that, because, for what I know, people with perfect pitch (which Jordan has) really struggle with changing the tuning of their instruments, since they already know how each note sounds with each fret/position/key.

That is a great setlist. Complaints? I would have loved for them to play Surrender to Reason instead of As I Am, but it's not really a big deal because they played A Change of Seasons!! I can't wait to see bootlegs from this tour.

erwinrafael

What I would change in this setlist is to replace TSCO with Chosen.

As I Am

Just one man's opinion. I put set 1 into media and listened and it actually flows pretty damn well. I still have issues with some songs being played on this tour (see below), but overall it's a great night of DT music. Because of TBP, I & W and ACOS, this might be a 2 stop tour for me. :tup
Set 1:
Intro
The Dark Eternal Night (cool rockin' opener :hefdaddy)
The Bigger Picture  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
Hell's Kitchen (nice add, especially NOT going into LITS which makes it pretty cool on its' own :hefdaddy :hefdaddy)
The Gift of Music (one of the better songs off of TA :hefdaddy)
A Life Left Behind (good song, but a dullard LIVE :tdwn) Would have replaced with "Wither" selfishly since I've yet to see that ;)
Our New World (Best song BY FAR on TA. Has to be in this set more than any other TA song :tup)
The Spirit Carries On (Fantastic song and always love JP solo's :hefdaddy, but would have rather seen "Through Her Eyes")
As I Am ( :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn Would have much rather see SOC or ITNOG and just dropped ALLB)
Breaking All Illusions (great song, good set closer :tup)

intermission

Images & Words  :tup :tup :tup

Encore
A Change of Seasons (Nothing needs to be said here)  :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup

TAC

I have  :tup:tdwn, &  :hefdaddy in all of the same spots!

It does, indeed! I made a playlist on my phone for set 1 (+ ACOS) and listened to the first 3 songs on my short (20 some mins.) walk home and they flow perfectly into each other. Very cool way to start the set  :metal

vtgrad

YES!!!!  What a setlist!!  HK, TBP, I&W in full and ACoS!!!  This is a two stop tour for me when they're in the states!

I looked up clips of the I&W songs and they are definitely tuned a half step down with the exception of WFS:

PMU: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6DdchB4SU/
Another Day: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6G7Q5Dp0f/

Metropolis intro: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6CSQzFWZw/
Metropolis instrumental section (as posted by Schurftkut earlier): https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6Diy5jVwE/
UAGM intro: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6KP3uAi0x/
UAGM solo: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6CpYYBPGn/
WFS: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6P7SCl4IL/
LTL: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6EJN-Bf9x/

No vids of Surrounded yet, but it's safe to assume it was downtuned too.

I did this also.  :lol And one thing I also noticed is that Set 1 is not vocally challenging for James, so they are reserving him for Set 2.

Lazlow Panaflex

Oh man what a great set list!  Can't wait for Paris, and indeed London.  I wonder if they might swap or change a song or two for each show they play?

Yeah. Honestly for the sake of JLB's voice I'm glad they did that even if it sounds a little different

ACOS was in the original key, yes?

Love the jam at the end of TTT. It's great they tried to change the songs a bit and add some fun.

So they brought back the "Unbroken spirits" section of TTT. While it was a nice surprise, James is struggling with it painfully. The jam at the end is really cool, MM is so much fun to watch.

weezul

damn. the game done changed. May have to see this tour for ACOS now! I saw all of I+W on it's 15th anniversary tour in Newcastle so while I would enjoy it, I don't feel a huge need to see it again. Will probably keep an eye on the set and if ACOS is in every gig i'll make the trip

SeRoX

It's quite understandable. This part is really challenging and it's the first show of the tour. I think he will improve on that part.

Jinx

Just upset that no video screen this time. Are they playing big venues? Bit of a shame, and I cant make my mind up about those squares. Seems a bit 90s, unless thats what theyre going for.

A bit surprised by the omission of A New Beginning!

Prog Snob

I'm still waiting for a video of ACOS. Not just because it's awesome but to hear the crowd reaction, too.

No idea, we'll see when the first videos of that surface. The intro to Metropolis sounds pretty cool downtuned IMO, but I kinda wish they'd transposed WFS too, because now the reprise in LTL is in a different key, which might sound a little jarring at the show. I'm glad they're making James' job a bit easier, considering how long the shows are and how intense their schedule is.

Ouch, that second verse was rough! Then again, James always sounds a bit off at the start of each tour. I noticed he sang the first few lines lower than the album version like MP did on the SC and BC&SL tours -  I wonder if that's a permanent thing. I also like how he made the audience recite the movie sample in the middle, since they were in Italy. :D The jam in the end is pretty cool too.

I honestly couldn't remember whether AIA was in there or not.

Ok, now I can confirm posts above saying you, sir, are a liar.. I knew they were going to play that one since you posted that "read between the lines" comment in the other thread.. :lol

This pretty much sums up my thoughts about what I've read in this thread..

I can understand the "oh, I wish they've played this one instead" kind of comments, but don't get why playing 'overplayed' songs (which they aren't -as some have said before, while having live staples like PMU, TSCO or AIA, DT lacks of that type of songs-), or not using video screens or tuning down just a half step (a totally needed thing for James... the man's 53 and he sings in Dream Theater ffs) would mean decisions to be upset about..

Actually, now that they've played TBP, there are only THREE songs they haven't played: "The Best of Times" (and we know why they haven't or never will play this one), "False Awakening Suite" (and they did use it as the intro tape for the AftR tour anyways) and "Surrender to Reason" (which I think it's a matter of time for them to play it)... And that's it.. I don't think there's any other band in the world that can say they've played the amount of different songs and thus diversity of music DT has played over the years.. But yeah, for some E is NE..

About the TA songs, ALLB is one of my favorites, although almost everything in that album is it.. As for the other two songs, I do like them too, although I'd have prefer something like Three Days, Ravenskill or The Path that Divides, but I'm cool with them anyways (after all I'm not seeing them this time -my brother is though, this very day!)..

In line with what I said above, I can't see how not playing a song from a 34-track album like TA would be doing an "omission" at all.. But what do I know?.. :lol

Ok, now, let's see those vids... :corn

Chino

I like TSCO a lot, but I've seen it live like 6 times now. Other than that, I'd call it a solid setlist.
