Actually, this song is pretty catchy and I dunno. Something about it just stands out compared to the others. ;)

CDrice

It's still early, but this thread is already amazing.

I can't wait to see which of Prophets of War or Raw Dog will be at at number one.  :lol

ASacrificedSon

 :lol
I wish, but unfortunately, something else will take first place.

Hint: It's not over 10 minutes and it's not an instrumental, nor POW.

ASacrificedSon

Number 64: This is the Life
Here is a really nice ballad by Dream Theater. This is really nothing special, but the lyrics speak out to me a lot. Nothing left to say, besides: "This song is beautiful!"

Number 63: Looking Glass
Ah, does the word Rush not come into your mind while listening to this song? This song isn't a total loss in any way. I love Petrucci's solo in the album and I really love the chorus. The reason this song is on the list is because it was influenced heavily by Rush and I love Rush.

Number 62: Caught in A Web
Ah! Here is the first song from Awake that comes into play! This is also the first song Labrie lyrically contributed and I absolutely love his voice in this song. The part: "Try to push me round this world some more, make me live in fear...." gets to me every time. His aggression and passion speaks to me a lot and I absolutely love Petrucci and Moore's duet.

Train of Naught

This is the Life is 60 spots too low and the others are too high

/thread

I wish I could like The Looking Glass as much as some do but I just don't get it. Apparently it's similar to Rush so that might explain it.

mike099

My wife likes some DT and This is the Life is one of those songs.

When I first heard Looking Glass, I thought that it was a song about Portnoy first and then second it sounded like Rush.

Meh, maybe this belongs in the controversial opinions thread, but I really don't like Innocence Faded at all, it's easily a bottom 10 DT song for me.
consider death

also lol acos and troae lower than jlmb is hilarious stuff
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

It can't be those since they actually are great songs. It's got to be either Constant Motion or Never Enough.

:lol It might be pretty tricky!

Number 61: Under A Glass Moon

This song is nice from Images and Words, but it's in the bottom two on my list. The only song Moon beats is Another Day which I have no interest in whatsoever. The lyrics are very cryptic and the only saving grace for this song is Petrucci's solo, which I find to be amazing. I don't like Labrie's voice here at all and find it kind of annoying. The rest of the instruments are great also. I love the Moore/Petrucci duets. Yes, you will here my say the word duet a lot of times. :)

Number 60: Beneath The Surface

Here is a really nice ballad and it killed me, choosing whether to choose this or The Answer Lies Within, but painfully, I chose The Answer Lies Within. Beneath the Surface is like Answer in many ways. It is a ballad, it's length is similar and the lyrics are both touching.

Number 59: The Answer Lies Within

Between this and I Walk Beside You, The Answer Lies Within fell just a little (majorly) short. This has a really nice bridge and there are no traces of Petrucci's electric guitar, but his acoustic. Hell, I can barely make out Petrucci's guitar work, which is fine with me. Rudess still does an exceptional job with his piano and Labrie is quite magnificent here.

Songs it could be:

1. March Of The Tyrant
2. Pull Me Under
3. Surrounded
4. Lie
5. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
6. Anna Lee
7. Don't Look Past Me
8. The Way It Used To Be
9. Speak To Me
10. Surrender To Reason

EDIT: You said in the controversial opinions thread that ITNOG was musically your favourite song written by JP, that sure narrows it down. ::)

jakepriest

The Answer Lies Within is a good candidate for my least favourite DT song ever that holds Octavarium back from becoming the best DT album.  :lol

pcs90

I wonder if the favorite song is Forsaken...

Train of Naught

I find the way you abbreviate song titles very confusing.  :lol Answer for TALW, Moon for UAGM etc.

The song wasn't mentioned yet :)
I guess you'll have to wait...I'll throw hints here and there.

Number 58: Along for the ride
Ah, here is a nice song on dt12. The chorus is really nice and the riffing is fantastic. The only downside with this song is Rudess' cheesy synth. It makes me wince. Only if he used to the lead syth, it would've been better. Still, what a nice song! :tup

Agreed, I dislike the patch he uses...but I love what he's actually playing.

I would've said The Mirror, but this disproves that.

jakepriest

Along For The Ride is one of DT's most boring songs imho. The only good thing about it is Rudess's solo. The synth sound is actually kinda cool imo and saves the song from being a total fluke.

Are you ready for controversy? Are you ready for hate? Well then, you are at the correct place! I will give you my top 75 songs from Dream Theater and some of them are pretty damn controversial. Remember that it is all opinion and there are somethings I like that you may not like....so let's get started! And now for some quick facts!

It would be funny if "Sacrificed Sons" doesn't even make your top 75

2nd favorite song from the album and Root nor 8VM is in first place.

I agree. It is kinda dull...

Along For The Ride is one of DT's finest songs on one of their finest albums.  There are so many good things about it that I don't know where to start listing them.  But one good thing about it is Rudess's solo. The synth sound is really cool imo and totally takes the song to another level.
I agree.

ASacrificedSon

Number 57: The Silent Man
Here is a nice breather in Awake after Voices. This is part 3 of the "A Mind Besides Itself Suite" and the most calming and refreshing. We feature John and John on an acoustic guitar, Portnoy on those tambourines, and Moore with a bit of keyboards. There is also a quick acoustic solo and I find myself falling prey into it. One thing I'm a sucker to are acoustic guitar solo's: that itty bit on 8VM, Solitary Shell, and this song. The Silent Man is overall a really strong step for the end and introduces the legendary Mirror/Lie.

Number 56: Hollow Years
The only reason this song is on the list is because: 1)the acoustic guitar and 2)Petrucci's :hefdaddy solo. Yeah.

Number 55: Disappear
This song is so fricking depressing and it does a really nice job in bringing the mood to you. I mean seriously, it is so beautiful. I especially Rudess' introduction and it kinda reminds me of BTV. The mood is really somber throughout the entire song and the end is where it truly shakes your soul. This beautiful song needs no more to be said.

Number 54: As I Am
AWWWW YEAH! Here is the first song on the album Train of Thought and the first on this list. This song is pretty meh and some days I really enjoy listening to, while the other days, I just skip to the next song. Although, the ultimate saving grace of this song is the crunching riff, the godly guitar solo, than the godly Portnoy solo. I always think: "Damn. Don't their arms hurt by now?" I get really really excited when I get to the guitar solo and the excitement never ends throughout the entire album.  :tup

IDontNotDoThings

Is it Lifting Shadows Off A Dream?

Because at the time that was posted, you couldn't drink yet, but still participated in the drinking thread (meaning you probably wanted to),
so you had a curiosity of what it would be like,
so it's something you had difficulty seeing,
like seeing in darkness,
like a shadow,
so when you turned 18, you lifted the shadow from your dream of being able to drink?

I'm running out of ideas... :emo:

Also why would you go out of your way to ruin the surprise of the #1 pick? Isn't that the whole idea of doing a top songs list?

Number 53: The Shattered Fortress
It hurts me to hurt black clouds, but it has to be done. :(
This is the final suite and many parts were recycled from the other suites. Still, you have to love the guitar and keyboard sol0. Also the nostalgia at the end speaks to me greatly. Portnoy's vocals are very nice on this song and the transition from heavy to soft blows me away.
